Days leading up to it, I was still very worried because I hadn't seen her sketch yet. The day beforehand, she sent me her sketch and I adjusted it to my liking. The next day was my appointment and I had to call her since the building was kind of hard to find. The studio was very clean and professional. I had never had a professional studio tattoo prior to this visit and I was a little worried about the pain especially because of the stipple shading. Ally had a super light hand and the outline was completely fine, and after the pain spray it was basically numb. Another concern was the healing process and I did notice little black flakes coming off and I was a little worried. After a couple weeks, fully healed, the tattoo looks as good as it was when it was freshly done. The session took less than two hours and I think the price was reasonable. Got there and was told to put my name on a sheet and didn't sign a waver or form of any sort. Piercer put on gloves and proceeded to touch every surface possible. She forgot about my metal allergy until reminded. Jewelry came in a box of mass supply, cheaply made jewelry like would be found on Amazon, and very unsterile as she was touching all of them and digging through it. Needle was the only thing in sterile packaging. She then got out the wrong jewelry, and was asking my opinion on gauge size which she should know. For the piercing I came in for, a flat back was required for minimal dental wear. She pulled out a curved barbell and when I requested a flat back because that's what's supposed to be used, she stated 'it will damage your teeth either way and you'll have to come back to downsize in a week anyway'. I told her to keep the deposit and left, never seen such an unsanitary and unprofessional piercer.

The person that answered the phone said if I could get there soon they could take me so we went right there and were the first people in. They took us immediately and people started coming in pretty quickly afterwards. Definitely a fast paced shop that gets lots of foot traffic so adjust your expectations if you think you're gonna get right in. We got Nino (@zappyzip on Instagram) and he was really great at being straight with us about what will and won't look good on a finger. We both have tattoos but these were our first finger tattoos so we didn't really know what was realistic. My husband wanted to get the entire date in Roman numerals and Nino very gentle told him that would not be a good idea cause it's just too much writing and that we should keep it simple. He was totally right and we were so happy with how they turned out. Shop was very clean, friendly and professional. I read reviews before coming and could kinda tell the general attitude of the negative reviewers and I'm sure if you come in here and act like a tool or are rude they might get a little spicy with you but honestly everyone here was so nice and talented. Next time we are in the area we are definitely gonna try and book in advance with Nino!

I have been going to Philthy Clean Tattoo in Berkeley for years, and unfortunately, my recent experiences have been extremely disappointing. I have always tried to be patient and supportive, and I have overlooked quite a few things over the years, including tattoos not turning out exactly as I requested, placement issues, and appointments taking significantly longer than expected compared to other tattoo artists. I also referred several clients to Miguel because I wanted to support his work. However, over time, I began experiencing repeated issues with appointments, pricing, and communication. Miguel missed several appointments I had scheduled with him. Because of those missed appointments and referrals, he offered me a free tattoo. I sent him a picture of the tattoo I wanted, and he told me it was fine. He started the tattoo, and after already beginning a fairly large piece, he then told me he was going to charge me for it. I had already explained to him that I had just paid for a previous tattoo where he charged double the original price I had been quoted, and I was not planning on getting another tattoo at that time. The only reason I agreed to get this tattoo was because he offered it to me for free. If I had known beforehand that I was going to be charged, I would never have agreed to have him start the tattoo. Because the tattoo had already been started, I was left with a half-finished tattoo when I refused to pay for something I had been told was free. I have text messages documenting the conversations and the agreement. I have also experienced prices changing after tattoos had already been started, which puts the client in an extremely uncomfortable position because the work is already in progress. On another occasion, I was told the tattoo would cost $600, but I was ultimately charged $1,200. I paid it because I was trying to be supportive, but I do not believe it is fair for a client to be charged double the original estimate after the tattoo has already begun. In my opinion, the pricing structure is also a concern. Because the tattoos take significantly longer than what I have experienced with other artists, charging by the hour can become extremely expensive. I believe clients should be given a clear and accurate price upfront, especially when the artist knows how long the work is expected to take. I have supported this business for years and tried to be understanding about a lot of things, but the recent experiences have left me feeling taken advantage of and extremely disappointed. The biggest issue for me is the lack of clear communication about pricing before starting the work. Clients deserve to know exactly what they are agreeing to before a tattoo begins--not after they are already committed to having the piece started. I hope this review helps others ask very clear questions about pricing and payment before beginning any tattoo. read more

Incredible service and people So happy I decided to go to Philthy clean tattoo in Berkeley to get my first and second tattoos. Got both of my tattoos by Antonio who is incredibly talented. My mum and I both have a black and grey, half of an elephant tattoo on opposite arms mirrored so that when they are put together it creates the full image. The detail of the tattoos are absolutely unreal and I'm so chuffed with the results. Thank you so much again to Antonio and Philthy clean, I will definitely be coming back. I paid $4,000 to Laura Taylor at Ritual Tattoo for a custom piece over two sessions (5.5 hours total between August and September 2025). The work was for a frame and details surrounding an older tattoo from a different artist. The experience was deeply disappointing on every level. The Work: I showed Laura a specific piece from her own portfolio as reference - fine linework and dotwork with minimal shading. What I received was completely different: heavy shading throughout that was never discussed or approved beforehand. In the final session, she changed design elements without consultation. She never once asked if the tattoo was going in the direction we'd discussed. No Price Disclosure: Laura never disclosed her rates upfront. * Session 1: $2,000 for 4 hours (I was shocked at the expense but already invested) * Session 2: She told me it would be "about 2 hours." After only 1.5 hours, she charged her full $2,000 day rate * During session 2, when I asked about adjustments, she kept insisting I "let it heal and decide" - meaning another paid session for her Complete Lack of Accountability: * I emailed Laura about my concerns - no response * I emailed owner Matt with detailed feedback - he promised to look into it * After 5 weeks and follow-up emails, he finally responded to say Laura is an "independent contractor" so he's not responsible, and he won't offer any resolution I have a $4,000 permanent reminder of an unprofessional experience and a really disappointing tattoo that I'll have to invest more money in with another artist to fix. Save your money and find an artist who communicates clearly, honors their portfolio style, and stands behind their work.

I heard very good things about this spot, so I was excited to come here. A bit background, my tragus earrings fell out about 3 days prior to this visit. I lost one, so I decided to get a new set and wanted someone out the jewelry back in for me, as it is difficult for me to get the backing for these piercings, Anyway, I stopped in, was greeted, and informed to fill out a form on my phone. After filling it out, I was taken to the glass case where the earrings were and the ones I wanted only have one left, so I picked out a different pair (they sell the earrings individually). I was told to wait for the piercer to help me. After a short wait, someone came out for me and we went to the back. I got settled on the piercing / tattoo bed and was walked through the process. My piercer was nice and since we were just putting new ones in, it was a quick process. I went back to the front to get rung up for the jewelry and service (they do charge $10 for each piercing change). The reason why I gave them a 2 is because one of my tragus swelled up very badly. Not sure why it would had swelled up like that, as I did not get pierced, so I am not sure if they did not clean the jewelry properly or practice correct hand hygiene. I had to carefully clean it, as it was so inflamed and hurt so badly for days. Overall, it would had been a 1, but the experience up to afterwards was pleasant.

Yo Yo is the man! My tattoo isn't even complete yet and I get compliments on it every day from…read moreeveryone and anyone. A kid at the library told me to remove my jacket as I was putting it on. My dragons are something I did for me but the talent is loud. I will update this review, but am putting the recommendation here in the meantime. Yo Yo has a light hand and the great playlists, I only have positive memories of all the hours completed so far. The location of the shop and parking are easy enough which matters with repeat appointments. This is also a very clean and welcoming space. I have had 5 sessions so far and the experience has been consistent (:

The other artists/staff are friendly and quick to accommodate any needs of those in the shop. I am very happy with this new ink .. also, this is a cover-up!! With Yoyo as your artist, you're able to relax and trust the process with no anxiety or second thoughts. I'll be bringing my cash to him for a good while for more beautiful pieces like this -- Thank you. The normal rates for tattoos are actually reasonable. The art and the artist make it well worth it. I did get my piece on a day the shop hosted an event that included discounts, so I got blessed with what I paid!
