I just bought my 1985 FXRT that was having some ominous shifting issues and finding neutral was impossible. A close friend suggested that I take it to Phil, who he highly recommended. Upon dropping my bike off to Phil's Speed I knew I was in the right place. There were all different types of bikes in various stages of build and repair of all vintages. In talking with Phil, I learned that his shop has been around for 40 years and that he had a back ground in aerospace machining - and it shows. Phil was\is methodical in working up my estimate - walking me through everything he would look at. Once he was able to diagnose my bike, he called and walked me through his shop tag, and found several critical repairs that were also needed. He talked me through issues with my carb, brakes, and came up with a solution for my exhaust (which I was having issues with). He showed me the parts and hard proof of what happened with repairs from the previous owner\shop. Phil's the real deal. There is no guess work in his repairs. My bike is night and day different. (My bike shifts like butter now). He isn't a parts changer but the last of true mechanics\engineers that knows how parts work and why they are made the way they are. He knows OEM and modified assemblies (I had an aftermarket performance clutch that was not adjusted properly) and will tailor his repair to what the use case is. New to the Harley world and heard from a friend that this was the place to go. Took my bike in for some top end rnr and could instalntly tell Phil new what he was doing. His shop is rad, and shows its history. Phil ran me through what he believed to be the issue and broke the pricing down to every nut and bolt. After leaving the bike for about a week i got a call to come down and check it out. He showed me the valves and the head and everything that needed to be replaced. There was absolutley no bs about how you may need this or that. Straight up honest dude with the bikes best performance in mind. Followed up with me after the service was complete to make sure I was satiafied. If you want the bare minimum slapped together, go somewhere else, thats not the kind of work that comes out of Phils shop. 10/10 will be going back. I have a 1989 fxsts and a 2007 flhx phil has done work on both bikes but the 2007 flhx is a bike i used to bring to harley davidson .I have had such bad service from these dealers. Phils shop is in my neighborhood for 30 plus years so i decided to bring my bikes to him it was the best decision i ever made when coming to the mechanics of my bikes not only that but the friendship i made with him. My 2007 flhx lost the transmisson at 30.000 miles so i took it to harley under the extented warrenty that was left on it and they repaired it it lasted about 20.000 miles before the same problem happened . That did it for me so i brought the bike to phil he was able to repair the bike with upgraded parts that eliminateded the problem he also will let you watch what he does to your bike and explain in detail what hes done or is going to do correct the problems. I had a 1948 Panhead I wanted to give new life to and had the tools and experience for all but the engine and trans. I was told to call Phil at Phil's Speed as he was a wizard with not only the late model bikes but had many years of experience with the old iron also. Well 11 years later I am still riding that Panhead daily in the mountains around Carson City, Nevada. The best part is it has always been a 1 kicker and still is to this day. (Thanks Phil) And I love showing the young guns that this old iron can be just as much or more fun and reliable to ride when built right as the new stuff. In 2006 I picked up a street glide and when I heard the chatter about the cam chain tensioner issues I called Phil and he said he was way ahead of me and that he had the fix. The plastic was already starting to eat up with only 4,000 miles on the bike. An S&S gear drive and some cams were installed and all has been good for the past 48,000 miles. A gear driven cam worked just fine for Harley for the last 100 years (Damn corporate bean counters at H.D.) If you are looking to cut corners then Phil is not your man as he does not half step when it comes to your ride and treats it with the same care you would. Honest, precise, fair and a true man of his word. Nice doing business with someone you can trust. P.S. And no hand prints all over the bike when you pick it up. He just gets it !!! read more
