    Stand in the Public Market

Philomina's, how did I not discover you earlier? If so, I would have been a more frequent flyer of the Public Market. Hands down, some of the best food i've ever had in Rochester. Not only was it tasty, but also healthy (mostly vegetables) and unique. I have a hard time characterizing the cuisine. I know Philomina is Nigerian, but I haven't had enough Nigerian food to know if it's classic Nigerian food per se. All I know is it's hearty comfort food. I had a large plate of assorted stews (tomato, lentil, potato & greens), served with fried plantains, sweet potato and oven roasted chicken over jollof rice. My wife had the smaller plate with Turkey meatballs. So much deliciousness on one plate! It might just be the best single dish of food in Rochester. So much variety, with different flavors and textures. The chicken was extremely tender and fell of the bone (I could eat with a plastic fork). It paired nicely with the fluffy and tangy rice. The slightly sweet plantains and sweet potatoes also added another dimension to the plate. The large plate was a bargain for $10. Philomina's is my new favorite mom & pop restaurant in town. I think I may just return this weekend.

Roasted plantains with roasted veggies and eggs. Vegan and chickpea sauces added

Located in the Public Market- Shed B. I ordered the roasted plantains with eggs and roasted vegetables. I added vegan and chickpea sauces. This was a healthy, filling breakfast. Philomina was very personable and answered questions regarding what each food is and what exactly complements for a flavorful taste. I was not disappointed! I got a medium meal with coconut water. My first thought was that the medium dish would not be enough; however, I was certainly wrong. It was more than enough for one person. I do plan to go back try this spot again!

A healthy bowl full of stewed veggies, lentils, sweet potatoes and plantains topped with a tomato sauce and chickpea drizzle! Yum.

The place is clean, spacious, plenty tables to sit. I just picked up some food to go. I did eat the pâté while waiting on my chicken and rice. It was a bit doughy but very flavorful and spicy. The juices are great. I should've taken some to go. The rice and beans with chicken were a hit as well. Glad to find a bit of home here. They also have a market of food and goodies to buy right next to the restaurant. This is definitely a little gem. Check them out.

The African pate tastes very similar to an alcapurria. A fritter stuffed with meat and fried. One man served us and we had to wait for him to clean up before ordering. Thankfully I ordered Yelp since it was a bit of a big order, unfortunately I never received a confirmation order, but I just seen our food sitting at the restaurant and asked if it was mine. It was....so we didn't have a long wait time, however the food had gotten cold. I tried to be strategic and ordered for 1:30, since my drive was 30 mins but it was still cold. Thankfully there were pates and sambusas in the hot case still warm, so we got those hot and fresh. The ambiance was a little lack luster. Not much decorum or music, but there is a smaller store on the other side of the restaurant. I didn't get a chance to check it out but next time. If it's two things you remember to try it's the Sorrel (Hibiscus) Juice and the Somali fish Sambusas. I would drive back for those two things alone. The sorrel juice is so flavorful and spicy from the ginger. Those two menu items alone are a 15/15

On my most recent visit, during lunch time with friends, we all had the all-you-can-eat buffet, which is a great value at $13.99 (current price). The woman serving us was very generous with the portions and also made sure we had plenty of injera bread to eat with it (though there is also rice on the buffet if you prefer.) Although I don't know the names of any of the things I ate, there were mild and spicy options, several kinds of lentils, a kind of pureed chickpea dish, sauteed/braised greens and two kinds of mixed veggies - one with carrots and one with cabbage. Although the buffet is all-you-can-eat, we were all stuffed and just managed to eat what we were served. A few side notes: -- Hours here on Yelp say they open at 11 am which is incorrect. They open at 12 pm each day of the week. -- There is street parking and in this section of the city, it is still free! -- Seating in the front room inside can accommodate approx 20 people. On the day we visited, we were a group of 4, and several singles came in, and two other groups of 4, and the place was packed -- There are also several meat options on the buffet; if you want the meat the buffet price increases by $1 -- Beverages are all in bottles - water, sodas, etc -- This place uses disposable paper plates and plastic cutlery -- Don't forget to ask about the samosas! They have a veggie one and a meat one, and though we forgot and were too full, they looked and smelled amazing!

Yelp delivery fees, taxes, service fees & tip made a super reasonably priced meal quite pricey, but the combo meal was worth every penny.
