Place is pretty hidden, warehouse workers were friendly helped me visually inspect and ask questions as needed. The forklift driver was on top of his game and even brought out a few sheets for me to see. Now, the reason why I'm giving this place a 2 star review is due to the guy in the front office. Guy was arrogant, condescending, and pretty rude, not sure if he was having a bad day or he's always like this. Nonetheless, I decided to take my business elsewhere. Dropped in today for a couple of sheets of 1/2" birchwood plywood. I love the quality of the wood I purchased and am now having second thoughts about cutting such a nice looking sheet for a garage storage project. A few things I learned today: 1. The whole office shuts down between 11-12 for lunch. Plan accordingly. 2. Don't make the mistake of walking into the large Will Call entrance. You need to step around and enter the "main" door. This is where you'll make two lines, one to order and another to pay. The order window is where you have a conversation about what you're looking for and discuss your options. I honestly don't understand why you need two separate lines to handle what seems like one transaction. 3. Once you've paid, step outside the office with your paperwork in hand and wait at the Will Call area for someone on a forklift to drive by and get your order. Several forklifts are driving around, just get in line and one of them will stop for you. Once you've given them your paperwork, walk back to your vehicle outside and wait for delivery. They'll drive around looking for you. I'm a newbie when it comes to buying wood outside of a big box store. I honestly didn't know what to expect and although their process was a bit odd, the quality of their product was great and I'm definitely looking forward to doing this again. read more

I have been buying from Phillips for a few years now and I give Silvia there a ton of credit for that. I moved to buy from Phillips when she moved there. She has really taken the time to understand what we use and won't hesitate to offer options or hunt material down. It takes a long time to gain trust and confidence in a vendors ability to provide consistent and timely service, they have achieved that. I tend to agree with many of the reviews here that the service is not the best. That being said, this place has all the plywood you would ever want or need and some of the hardwoods and softwood's that you would use for a medium to medium high end project as long as you are not going with real wild exotic woods. I have found that I need to be proactive and work hard to make sure I have their attention and I am in line to get my product. When I do that the wait is tolerable when they are busy and nonexistent when they are not busy. read more

This place is terrible. I used to come with my grandfather as a kid and the service was bad back then. Now as an adult I come for business and my own personal satisfaction and the service is still just as bad. The will call department acts out in front of customers. I showed up got some hardwood planks and turns out the guy who helped me gave me the wrong stuff or wrote me up wrong and the will call people acted as if they were behind closed doors. Nothing rude towards me but nagging towards each other and saying she reminds you of your nagging wife isn't exactly professional. Secondly, the guys in the yard are trash. I waited 25 mins to get acknowledged that I needed anything. Note that I would wave and make eye contact but nothing still. Finally after getting acknowledged I waited 15 mins to be told I had the wrong stuff with a little show at the will call desk then another 15 for the guys to bring me the material I needed. In general I hate coming here. I appreciate what's here and this place as a business but honestly I do my best to avoid coming here and maybe you should too. read more

Worst lumber yard in LA county. When you call about exotic lumber they have no clue what you're talking about, there's never anyone in the warehouse so you have to walk around to locate someone to help you and on my last trip they gave me half of my order so I had to drive back 20 miles to pick it up. They didn't even care to offer me a discount for wasting half of my day. Not coming back here again. read more

Do you ever watch home remodel shows on TV and wonder how they manage to achieve so much in such a small budget? It's because they go to places like this that don't advertise and only contractors know about. I went here looking for exotic wood veneers for my front door but they carry all kinds of wood products that you won't find at your local Home Depot or Lowe's. If you know what you want, you can call ahead and they'll have it ready for pick-up. If you don't, stop in and see Fred Guzman who'll give you the goods on all their goods. He's helpful and friendly and didn't rush us at all to make a decision. We made a small purchase but he made sure that we got all the answers we needed and even escorted us to the back to make sure we could pick out the exact sheet of veneer we wanted. I'm a General Contractor and I've heard of this place from my carpenter and cabinet subs. I went in myself the other day for some melamine, and had a good experience. The people were helpful and friendly. I'm very keyed-in to being ignored, or treated like I'm a nuisance and I didn't feel that at all. I've read some bad reviews here. My experience wasn't like theirs... I wonder if they are mixing up Phillips for Van Nuys Plywood, cuz Van Nuys Plywood is the worst retail outlet I've ever experienced. read more

Asked for prices and they gave ballparks. This is for hardwood. Got some walnut strips just to try out the place. It's about 8.50 per bf. the walnut quality was on the low side but I thought I try it out. The price is manageable but the over experience makes you feel a little ripped. Anyhow, I'll not use for hardwood again. I might try it for plywood as the name implies. Ended up all the way to Austin's ( you heard me) on a Friday to get my fix. A truckload full of walnut shorts for about 4 a bf. The quality and color speaks for itself. read more

They have been an essential part of me now having my own business in delivery fast and friendly service with quality goods. Allowing for me to get back to work as quick as possible and keep turning out top quality work. Here is where it begins. Make sure you know how to calculate board feet on your own or else YOU WILL BE SCREWED AND LIED TO. Phillips Plywood does not have set prices im assuming because each time i buy here the price for the same material is always different for some reason. Theyre probably commision based because they rip you off and lie to you on the calculation of board feet. I will no longer come here for materials. Many other lumber yards would appreciate your business more than this place does. read more

Our company has been coming here for year's now to purchase wood for our line of work. They have really good customer service (especially Fred, Celia, John aka Shag ... ;)...etc) and basically everyone that work's there. We've been in business since 1992 and have always purchased our wood material from Phillips and were always satisfied in the quality of the material. Once you place an order you are given a slip that you hand to the forklift operators who then bring you your ordered material. They then help you load it on to your vehicle and you are on your way. Their prices are also really good. So if you're in the business of woodworking I recommend coming to Phillips Plywood for all your wood needs. read more

this retailer gets two stars for product selection and minus one for customer service or pricing. inventory is always spotty. call ahead to check for stock. Fred can perform this task reliably. don't rely on Jonathan for anything. if stock is not available, placement of a special order is possible in person with a full pre-payment. ordering over the phone is not an option. lumber is not measured accurately. double check their BF calculations before paying. plywood sheet pricing can vary by 20% for the identical product. recently, a 30" x 120" piece of dimensional bamboo lumber cost $230. upon returning for a second piece two months later, the price was $540. try to avoid this joint. read more
