Local cafe with a simple selection of homestyle food. Travelling from KC Metro area and really felt at home here despite the regulars already in place. Definitely planning a return visit for a hearty break from franchise diner food. Staff warned us about limited seating and their busiest hours so we could plan ahead for our next visit. It's exactly what it's supposed to be: a diner. Everything was as it should be. Hash browns were crispy. Pancakes were fluffy. Omelette was eggy. Nothing hipster, artisan, small-batch...just an all-American small town diner. Inexpensive, good spot. We were driving across Kansas when we stopped, en route to the in-laws for Thanksgiving. As you might expect from a family owned, small town, Midwest diner...they avoid trends and stick with tradition. And to let the world know that they don't follow the overly PC state of the country, the restaurant placed the letters in a row on their marquee to read "We say Merry Christmas here." Good for them, we thought. We get out of the car and notice that that it is unseasonably warm for Central Kansas this time of year. The hostess seated us and the first thing I notice isn't the local art on the walls, but the placemats. "Happy Holidays" they read. So I ate my omelette wondering if you can even buy Christmas placemats anymore. read more

This place is very good. This first time we came in was on a lark, but now we come for a peck every time we're in town. The value is very good; compared to the diners in Denver it's dirt cheep. Daily specials are displayed on a roadside sign large enough that you don't have to crane your neck to get a gander. Recently we came in and were seated and the nest minute we had hot coffee and menus. The bacon is cooked just perfect and crispy. I'm not sure how they do it, must be a chick of the trade. Several times the breakfast was so good, we terned around and went back for lunch! One delicious bacon cheeseburger and flys. Wren you need a solid place to grab a bite, look no feather. I don't write a lot of reviews on yelp, usually twitter, but this place deserves raven about. Give it a try and you won't egret it. read more

My husband and I were on a road trip from TX to CO and spent the night in Hays. We wanted a hearty brunch before hitting the road for a full day of driving. There aren't a lot of sit down breakfast options in Hays, and we like to try out local fare, so when we drove past Pheasant Run Pancake House we decided to give it a go. The parking lot was full of locals, which we hoped meant good food with a local following. The patrons were a mix of elderly couples and families. The feel was definitely small town with dark paneling and dated decor. The service was friendly but slow because each server had many tables. I had the cinnamon pancakes and my hubby had a combination plate with eggs, hash browns, the pork steak and pancakes. My cinnamon pancakes were large, fluffy and fairly tasty, but I was expecting cinnamon batter. Instead, there was cinnamon sugar sprinkled on the top. My husband rated his plate as ok as well. The pork steak lacked flavor. Overall, it was decent meal and easy on the wallet. If you are looking for a quick meal or a memorable breakfast, this isn't the restaurant for you. If you want a little taste of Hays at a reasonable price, check out Pheasant Run. read more

Traveling through and wanted a good breakfast at a sit down restaurant. Have eaten way too many Egg McMuffins on this trip! This locally owned "mom and pop" place looked like a good option. Small dining area with more than 1/2 the tables already filled with what looked like locals. I appreciate a simple breakfast menu and theirs fit the bill. So tired of those than contain 4-5 pages! I kept it simple: 2 eggs scrambled and 1/2 order of their "homemade" biscuits and sausage gravy. My coffee was poured promptly & the food delivered in a timely manner by a friendly waitress. My good comments end here. The eggs were over cooked/tough and appeared to have been sliced into strips-weird! The gravy was flavorful but the biscuit underneath was hard and dry. I can't imagine eating it with just butter. This Southern raised girl is accustomed to light/fluffy buttermilk biscuits! Perhaps this type of western biscuit is what they refer to as "hardtack" in stories? The coffee was weak - of course my living in the PNW for over 10 years has taught me a lot about good coffee! A disappointment - but it served it purpose if taking the edge off of my morning hunger. read more

I am sitting a table in the back of pheasant run. It took them almost an hour to seat us we had a group of six and they sat at least ten people that got there after us before us. When we finally were seated we only had to wait 10minuets for our drinks. We have been sitting here for an hour waiting for our food. I was told that the food here was really good but if I doesn't get here in the next ten minuets we will walk out. It is a Sunday morning so I get that there is a rush but they wait staff is unorganized and inefficient. We finely hot our food and my biscuits and bacon were burnt and the eggs were way over cooked. I do not recommend this place to anyone! read more

The food was very good. We are a military family on orders going to our next unit. We stopped into Pheasant Run on our way across country because we like to support local businesses. We were excited to see all the waitstaff wearing shirts that supported our troops on "Red Friday". What greatly disappointed us was when we asked if they had a military discount they said "no". I'm hoping the shirts are not just for show and this business gives money through charity to our troops. Otherwise how are you as a business "supporting our troops"? read more

Stoped here for breakfast on our way back to Denver. I got the French toast...my mom got an omelet....my dad got a combo meal...my son got the mickey mouse pancakes....the food was good fresh and fast. They forgot the cheese in my moms omlete...but she actually wanted it with out cheese so no issues. Fast n fresh. read more

Traveling to Colorado for our annual trip since we are traveling with our puppies we stop in Hays for a good sit down breakfast. We found this little place called Pheasant Run. We were greeted right away and seated. Our server was Tammy, she was very pleasant. I ordered a blueberry pancake, fried potatoes and bacon. My husband ordered eggs and a pork chop. We would highly recommend this place. Mom and Pap business are much better than chain restaurants. read more

DON'T CARRY YOUR MAN-BAG INTO THIS PLACE: I decided to go to Pheasant Run because it seemed like a local non-chain kind of place. The dismal reality is that the chains would have done a better job. First the positives: it's not a chain, they have WIFI, and it seems like a lot of locals eat breakfast here. Now the rest of the story: It's menu is very ordinary, and its environs a bit scruffy. WHAT WE ORDERED: I had the breakfast special that included eggs, meat and pancakes. My breakfast companion had the corned beef hash, eggs and toast. Nothing memorable or special about either order. FOOD: C- Really nothing more than cooking up what the restaurant supply place delivers. The pancakes were NOT served with butter, but lemon-yellow grease A/K/A "spread." I asked if the side of fruit was fresh. "Yes," said our server, enthusiastically. It was canned. I asked about the choice of sausage links vs. patties. "Links," she said, with strong reassurance, indicating a favoritism to links. The links were nothing special at all--just standard little links that were on the dry side. I paid a bit extra for the "apple pancakes." Basic pancakes smeared with a generous dollop of tepid canned apple-pie filling. SERVICE: We were seated fairly soon after arriving. Our server was polite and helpful, but not very knowledgeable (see above). No major complaints or compliments. ATMOSPHERE: On a Monday morning, we saw a lot of local retirement-age people. I got the sense that this place has a lot of regulars from the home turf. It is not a "hipster" group of people. There is nothing special about the design or decor of this place. It is Great Plains Plain--all put together cheap by somebody's brother-in-law with help from Home Depot and Dollar General. Don't come to this place for the food or service. If you want a small glimpse into what the locals find satisfying, this is your place. No Next Time for this place in my book of accounts. Sorry. read more

I had two eggs over easy that were not, hash browns that were burnt, my 4 oz. steak was ordered as med-rare and came out raw. I had the option of toast or pancakes and ordered toast.....got pancakes. Had to ask multiple times for creamer. I refuse to send any food back to the kitchen that I would otherwise like to consume so I was pretty disappointed......if not for the very forgetful waitress I might have gone 2 stars. Daughter complained that the girls restroom was disgusting. Thought her complaint about the orange juice might just be a picky 11 year old, but I confirmed that it did not taste right. Her pancakes w/ chocolate chips were so sweet she only had two bites, luckily she did enjoy the order of pancakes that were delivered in place of my actual order of toast. read more

Stopped in this nice little mom and pop shop on our way out west. We stopped for a late breakfast. Everyone was very friendly and prompt with their service. We had the huntsman and the uplander. Both were pretty good. The steak could have used a bit of seasoning but was cooked perfectly as requested. The prices are great. Stopped here for breakfast on a road trip. Location is convenient to route 70 and I prefer to support local businesses vs the chains. We ordered the early bird - eggs, hash browns, pancakes. Servers were attentive refilling my coffee frequently. The food took quite a while, understandable since they were quite busy, but that gave me time to enjoy my coffee. Once our meals finally arrived the food was still hot and perfectly cooked, good potions, fluffy yummy pancakes with butter and hot syrup. We were quite satisfied overall. read more
