A solid three out of five kinda place. Been here a couple times in the last year. First time around the place was packed wall-to-wall, and service was a bit slow. Second time around we were the only patrons in the place and service was good. Food on both occasions? Mediocre at best. Assumed that being busy might have had an impact on the food, we went back. Clearly not the case. Hashbrowns were not crispy. Sausage links seem like they were sitting out for a while before being served. I think they are better options for breakfast in the Hays area. read more

Definitely room for improvement. We were seated quickly on a Thursday morning in an empty restaurant by a waitress that looked like she seriously didn't want to be there. She gave us menus and we ordered coffee. The coffee was pretty good. I ordered a pancake and an over easy egg, my husband ordered the biscuit and gravy platter. Our meals came out super quick, like within 5-7 minutes. Unfortunately, my egg was a little over cooked and my pancake was cooked on the outside, but undercooked and gummy inside, neither were hot. My husbands over medium eggs were more over hard and his sausage was close to hockey pucks and had a funny taste. The gravy however was pretty tasty and the biscuits weren't bad. Leaving no stars on this establishment. Classic case of to many waiters and not enough direction. I hold nothing against people trying! I just feel that management has super failed at making this a productive business. Was pretty busy Sunday morning breakfast about 10 am, a few open tables. Was seated from hostess, waited about 10 minutes for anyone to come by to take our drink order. Listened and watched same waiter take other drink orders another 10 mins goes by others got drinks, he comes back and says we're out of Dr. Pepper and Pineapple juice, I opted to not stay, takes 10-15 to tell me they are out of something I can only imagine if it gets actually complicated. The whole time I watched 5-6 waiters and 2-3 busses wandering around aimlessly or knowing what direction. Like I said I feel they felt like they needed to be everywhere and it in the positions they need to be In, hashtag management failure. read more

Lots of on street parking, bigger than I expected. Only one server but she was very pleasant. Food was good, she left a carafe of coffee which was great! When she asked if we wanted cream we were brought French vanilla coffee mate, oh well. I always bring my own sweetener but we usually get real cream. Overall good experience. Management is horrible. She not only treats her customers like trash but also her employees. If this place still has any chance at staying open, she needs to go. Late breakfast on a Wednesday, almost totally empty. Clean, were greeted & seated quickly. Buddy had pancakes and was very happy. I ordered the Trough; chunked country fried steak, tater tots, split biscuit, sausage gravy, eggs over medium, and sautéed onions, peppers, and bacon with melted cheese served in a tin trough! A gem in Hays, Kansas. Not very big, ambiance so-so, but service superb and food delicious, hot and tasty. The owner allowed me to order breakfast during the lunch hour (Belgian Waffle with OM eggs and link sausage). Husband had a black & bleu burger cooked perfectly. And, drum roll please, the French fries are made in house and scrumtious. Street parking but lots of it. Handicapped restrooms and a full bar. What more can anyone ask than this? Fairly quiet and friendly people. Windows are CLEAN which tells me the rest of the place is, too. read more

9/30/23, my food was brought out luke warm. My chicken fried steak tasted like it was microwaved, hash browns were not fresh, eggs were ok. The worst part was my wife's meal, which was also subpar, came out 8 minutes after mine. Objectively, her bacon was very good. I asked our waitress for a discounted meal for my wife and was told the manager/owner refused. I asked to speak with the manager, who proceeded to charge out of the kitchen, came to our table and proceeded to chew me out for bringing the issue to her attention. I asked her, "are you mad at me?" She said "yes, it's not my fault, it's your waitresses fault." I asked her, "this is your business, correct?" She then said, "pay your bill and leave!" I've never heard a manager/owner throw an employee under a bus and be so disrespectful to a customer. A very simple apology or 10% discount would have been appropriate, which she was unwilling to provide. Needless to say 9th Street Diner lost two repeat customers, today. read more

We stop here about once a month when in town visiting family. New ownership that is trying to find their way. Can't help but get the feeling they are struggling financially? Our pleasant and inattentive waitress was nice. Must be part of owner's family as no one would put up with her unproductive work. It seems like they need some menu work. The first two choices I made are no longer available. Our waitress informed us that they haven't had it for four months. When we finally located an item that they actually had in stock, it was rather tasty. Well prepared and neat. Very enjoyable. Would have been a higher rating if our waitress would refill water, ask about the food, clear the plates, give us the check, etc. We've been finished eating for 22 minutes and the place isn't busy plus they have 4 wait staff on duty. read more

A great spot in town. While it may be a touch off the main roads, it is worth it. Went in for dinner on a weeknight. Amiable staff and a homey atmosphere. It felt a little awkward with how few were there at 6:30 p.m., but otherwise, it felt welcoming. We were shown a table when we walked in the door, and our orders were taken quickly. The food was terrific. I ordered their catfish with garlic mashed potatoes and their soup of the day, Italian tortellini, while the person I was with ordered their lemon chicken with steamed vegetables and a baked potato. The food took about 15 minutes, which was well worth it. The soup was nice and warm, with a flavorful broth, lots of vegetables, meat, and tortellini. The catfish was nice and crispy, the chicken was lemony, and both remained tender. The baked potato and steamed vegetables were like a home-cooked meal. My only complaint is that the garlic mashed potatoes could have a little more garlic. Also, it is a touch pricey, costing us about $36, while ordering some of the cheaper dinner options at $16.95 each. They did have meal options under $12, but few and only in burgers. Being from Colo, when there's a "breakfast burrito" on the menu, one has certain expectations...like onions, peppers, maybe refried beans, green chile. In Kansas, it's diced ham, scrambled eggs, hash browns, smothered in white biscuit gravy. If food defines a people, then there it is. I went in here last Thursday, with a group of friends. I ordered a sausage & cheese omelette. Honestly, it was the worst omelette I've ever had. -and I'm not hard to please. The sausage had no flavor, I wondered if it was hamburger. Very little cheese. I ate my toast and hash browns, which were not crispy, as ordered. Pricing for kids is not very friendly. Could not really taste buttermilk in pancakes, and hardly fluffy. Bacon was probably undercooked and more like jerky, not crisp. Wow. All I can say is what an awful experience. We arrived at 0940 and were sat by 0943, which was great. We weren't greed by our server until 0954 who then rushed us to order our drinks and food. At 1003 we received our water. We did receive our food from another staff member at 1007. Literally two bites in our check was brought to us, my water was depleted and our server walked off. No communications regarding how anything was or an offer to refill my beverage. We were three bites away from being finished before our waitress came back and said sorry youre going to have to be moved to a booth so we can make room for a larger party so that they could put tables together for them. Formerly known as the Golden Griddle - the restaurant underwent an ownership change and is locally and family owned and run. Previously known to just serve breakfast, they've now expanded to lunch and dinner and even added a bar. Their Bloody Mary's are a perfect start to a brunch and if you have the chance to be there on a Friday/Saturday their Prime Rib is a great steak for a night out. read more
