The steak was so tasty and fixed to perfection. The ribs were pretty good, but I think I'd like the barbecue sauce on the side. The hot big yeast rolls or a huge hit. Our server, Chase, was a very nice man. A romantic quiet restaurant with country music and laid back in patriotic country. Beef is a 10! read more

I got the KC strip steak with salad and asparagus. I had heard some complaints that the portions were getting small, but that was definitely not my experience. I thought the place could use a little cleaning up, but it definitely wasn't filthy. read more

Service was quick and friendly. Steaks were cooked like we ordered. Price was reasonable as well. I would return when in the area. Appetizer was good, the cheese curds, fried pickles and bacon wrapped shrimp. read more

We come here twice a year on our way to and from Colorado. On our visit this year we were very disappointed. Torn booth seats, sticky tables, dirty windows. We were told by waitstaff that baked potatoes were no longer available except on weekends. My husband and I have split the Sunflower Salad with our steak in years past. This year we were told that's not an option. Steak was overcooked and salad drowned in dressing. Service was great as always. We are back in town and are going to try something new. read more

We've been coming to Hickok's for seven years, as it used to be fresh and a good value. Recent visits in Nov and Dec '25 show it sliding backwards. Portion sizes last two visits have been tiny (ex: steak tips tonite had 4 asparagus spears as "sides."). Fries were tiny and greasy both times. Appetizers have shrunk significantly also. It gets three stars due to the service, which continues to be solid. I love supporting local restaurants, and will give Hickocks one more shot before writing it off. read more

Although the entry was inviting, the rest of the building was not well kept. We ordered the sampler appetizer and everything on it came greasy and soggy and tasteless including the shrimp. When our entrees of beef tips arrived, both plates were messy as if the food had been thrown on the plate and although the food was ok the gravy was definitely bottled/canned and my husband's Caesar salad had bottled dressing and shredded Parmesan and lettuce was not fresh. Overall, after reading good reviews from recent patrons and looking forward to trying this place (we are new to the area), I can't recommend it and won't be returning. So sorry. read more

I have eaten here 6 to 8 times now. I eat here every time I come to town. Most of the food is really good. I've had the chicken fingers and the chips and dip. The chicken fried steak is the best I've ever eaten. The staff is courteous and attentive. I would give this place five stars except for a couple of things. First of all the ranch dressing is watered down and has very little flavor. The second thing is, the last few times I've been there my food comes out within two minutes after my salad does. I'm faced with the dilemma of letting my chicken fried steak get cold or my salad get soggy. I would prefer to eat my salad first and then get my meal hot. Those are a couple of easy fixes. I have mentioned that on my comment cards a couple of times, but it never gets changed. read more

Ordered a 16oz ribeye. Cook was what I wanted however I ordered a different cook. Tables are sticky and the sides were over cooked or old food reheated. My wife's salmon was very dry. Not horrible but not a repeat. read more

The service was acceptable. Absolutely no seasoning on the ribeye. To me a great steakhouse is how re seas are seasoned, Disappointing.

Got seated right away on a Saturday night. Service was prompt and friendly. We never had to wait on drink refills. The Fried Pickles were a great appetizer. I shared with my husband a 16 oz ribeye with onions and mushrooms as a topper. The steak was so tender and with the side salad and loaded potato it was more than enough food to share. My son had the Chicken Fried Steak which he gave a thumbs up as he polished it off his plate. read more

Stopped here driving back to Kansas City from Denver and was really glad we did. We both had KC Strips, baked potatoes and salad. Stopped in Hays on our way home and Hickok's was on the same side of the interstate as our hotel. The food was decent. DH had a sirloin and it was a little overdone; I had the chicken with bacon, cheese and something else and I couldn't taste any bacon and the chicken was pretty dry. The service was friendly and efficient. As far as ambiance, it was Kansas cow town. read more

Great Kansas Steak and great service. Modestly priced with great wine selection. I would recommend highly.

3.5 stars The place has some decent food and a great backstory to read. The service was fantastic. The food was okay. There are not a lot of places to pick from in Hays, KS and this one I thought would be one of the best, but it was middle of the road. I had the chicken fried steak which comes out rather large and round. Mashed potatoes and extra gravy. It was all good, but run of the mill good. The dinner salad was not much of anything and the "special" margarita was simply okay and small. Others had steaks that were okay as well. It is worth stopping in if your in town for more than one dinner. read more

Had an amazing lunch today! one of the best country fried steaks with perfectly cooked asparagus. Our waiter, Daniel, was friendly, helpful and spot on clearing plates and keeping our drink glasses full. Will eat here again! read more

Husband and I had lunch here yesterday (01/13/2023). We weere greeted by a pleasant young woman who seated us immediately. Our waiter, Josiah, came promptly and took our drinks order. A delightful young man, polite and professional. Husband had the Cheeseburger Combo, cooked medium and I had the best Philly Cheesesteak I've enjoyed in many years. I did ask that no bell peppers be added as they don't like me any more than I like them. Sauce housemade and delicious, but I'd like it a bit thicker so it sticks to the steak better. I also got the Fried Mushrooms. Fresh and battered in house. Totally delicious and tender with what I believe is a housemade Ranch dipping sauce. It's clean, has a lot of Kansas history on it's walls and, the best part? They have actual cloth napkins. We will be back next time we're in Hays. read more

I've been to this steakhouse many times and never had a bad experience. This dinner though was truly a nightmare. I ordered a medium rare kansas city strip steak with fries. When the steak came out I cut into it and realized it was more pink and rare than a usual medium rare steak which I didn't feel comfortable eating. When I asked my server for help he said "well I guess we can put it back on the grill." (That is definitely a health code violation since I had cut into it multiple times with a fork that I had previously used) When the server brought the steak back out from the kitchen I cut into it yet again to find the steak looking exactly the same as the first time. I called my server again and he said he could offer a discount (on my raw steak?) or to put it BACK on the grill (another health code violation??) When he brought it out again I was just so fed up with the experience and pissed that I had to advocate for myself so many times. When it came time for the check I was charged full price. I asked the server if I could receive the discount he offered since my experience had been terrible and he complied. The check came back with $2.80 off of a $28 steak meal that I sent back twice. Overall the experience was so terrible and extremely disappointing. I left feeling very frustrated and doubting the kitchen's ability to cook a steak. read more

I had high hopes for this steakhouse when we were staying 30 miles down the road in WaKeeney at the KOA. It was decent, but the food was certainly not as good as I hoped for. The steak I ordered, a 12 Oz Rib Eye was well prepared, medium rare, as I ordered. But it was rather thin and wasn't all that tender. I guess I was expecting a better grade of meat. I'm guessing this was USDA Choice at best. I believe they called it Superior but I have no idea what that means. It had OK flavor and wasn't overcooked at least. The baked potato was very good. We upgraded the regular dinner salad for $2 so it came with a hard boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, cheddar cheese curds, cucumber slices, croutons, etc. It was a very good salad. The dinner rolls with sweetened cinnamon butter to start was a nice touch. The wife had the Chicken Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes with creamy pepper gravy and the same upgraded salad I had. The thicken was very tender but the coating didn't adhere very well. All in all though she liked it. There were two rather large pieces of pounded chicken breast. Our bill, with one non-alcoholic beverage, the two upgraded salads totaled $46 before tip which isn't terrible I guess. Anyway, we went home satisfied and had left overs to boot. read more

We started with the fried pickles. They tossed in some fried banana peppers and wow! We absolutely loved them. The house made dipping sauce was perfect. Next we had French Onion Soup and Lobster bisque. The flavors were great and the soup was hot. Dinner salads were excellent with fresh ingredients. K.C. Strip was excellent, as was the Tilapia on rice. Pricey for us, but we splurged on purpose. Highly recommend for excellent food in Hays. Take the time to enjoy this restaurant. read more

We were traveling through the state and needed to stop for dinner. We chose Hickok's and we were so pleased. From the very start our waiter, Scott, was welcoming and seemed to know just what we needed. He was very attentive and so pleasant. The food was very quick to arrive and so delicious. The value was unreal. The restaurant was efficient, friendly, clean, great quality and very affordable. A fantastic experience. Thank you, Scott:) read more

First time here and was quite disappointed. The table we sat at was sticky and had crumbs from previous customers. It took about 10 minutes after being seated to be approached by our waitress for our drink order. We were ready with our whole order and waited another 40 minutes for the entree to arrive. For the price of the meal, it was a small portion and the chicken fried steak was not very flavorful. There were only two of us in our party and it was not terribly crowded. read more

I gave 3 stars for being open in the middle of no where Decent food, Meat a bit tough. You'll pay almost the same price as big city steakhouse. My chicken fried stake was a bit bland but my wife really liked her sirloin tips. Service was good and the restaurant has a rustic charm.

Grandma's pot roast went to culinary school! We were hoping to make it to Salina from Denver, but with the time change decided to stop in Hays. What a fortuitous event! We stopped at Hickok's and were pleasantly surprised at the high quality of this restaurant. From the service to the wine list to the food, everything was great! My husband enjoyed the pot roast which was juicy and tender. The onions complimented the dish, without overpowering it. I enjoyed a small sirloin and asparagus.. It's hard to get asparagus just right, not over cooked but still tender. Hickok made it perfectly,, just like my steak, which I order rare-medium rare. My steak was flavorful and tender. Even though I ordered the 10 ounce, I took half of it home. (Steak and eggs for breakfast, yum!) My daughter ordered the small filet, a salad and loaded baked potato. It was cooked perfectly to her specifications (different than my own) and her loaded baked potato was piping hot and, as she says, "filled with deliciousness". This restaurant is worth the stop. And, since there was a state wrestling tournament in town the weekend we stopped, it is also worth the short wait. Finally, although we didn't catch our server's name, she was friendly and attentive. Awesome restaurant. read more

This was our 1st visit to this steakhouse and we will definitely be coming back. The service is friendly and fast and the food is spectacular. I had the meat loaf and roasted brussel sprouts with bacon. They were cooked with care and definitely homemade. There is nothing here that seems to be frozen, from a box, or prepared way ahead a time. my husband had the chicken fried chicken and risotto and the chicken was tender enough to cut with a fork. You could tell it was hand breaded right there in the restaurant. Our server, Daphne was right on point. We didn't wait for bread, for drinks, for salad, and our food was hot and fresh when we received it. The salads were fresh, not overdressed, and a great size. You cannot beat the food for the price. read more

First review for 2019. This place is a must if your driving through town or if you live here locally. The service was great the staff is so friendly and kind and walked us though the menu and a little of the history of the owner. There was four of us and we all got the special which was a Steak and Lobster special with a soup or side salad and a side for $23.00 you can't beat that and it was delicious. They have cinnamon butter with their rolls. And the rest of the food is good too. And the service is great. The people are all super nice.

Passing through Hayes and this restaurant recommended by hotel. Hubby and I both ordered chicken fried steak. Steaks had good reviews but I never order steak out. I usually always order fish, but in the middle of KS was thinking that might not be a smart choice and most likely I would be disappointed. So my safe bet was chicken fry steak. WOW! It was delicious. Not overcooked! Perfectly seasoned and I didn't have to add salt or pepper. Gravy was tasty and I believe from scratch. Salad with nice fresh greens not iceberg. Ranch dressing was fresh too. Delicious rolls with amazing cinnamon butter. Prepare yourself and wish someone would have said. "Hey you can split this you guys." One meal was enough for 2 people. Funny it was so massive. Seriously! Service very friendly and attentive! read more
