We come here twice a year on our way to and from Colorado. On our visit this year we were very disappointed. Torn booth seats, sticky tables, dirty windows. We were told by waitstaff that baked potatoes were no longer available except on weekends. My husband and I have split the Sunflower Salad with our steak in years past. This year we were told that's not an option. Steak was overcooked and salad drowned in dressing. Service was great as always. We are back in town and are going to try something new. read more

Although the entry was inviting, the rest of the building was not well kept. We ordered the sampler appetizer and everything on it came greasy and soggy and tasteless including the shrimp. When our entrees of beef tips arrived, both plates were messy as if the food had been thrown on the plate and although the food was ok the gravy was definitely bottled/canned and my husband's Caesar salad had bottled dressing and shredded Parmesan and lettuce was not fresh. We've been coming to Hickok's for seven years, as it used to be fresh and a good value. Recent visits in Nov and Dec '25 show it sliding backwards. Portion sizes last two visits have been tiny (ex: steak tips tonite had 4 asparagus spears as "sides."). Fries were tiny and greasy both times. Appetizers have shrunk significantly also. It gets three stars due to the service, which continues to be solid. I love supporting local restaurants, and will give Hickocks one more shot before writing it off. read more

I have eaten here 6 to 8 times now. I eat here every time I come to town. Most of the food is really good. I've had the chicken fingers and the chips and dip. The chicken fried steak is the best I've ever eaten. The staff is courteous and attentive. I would give this place five stars except for a couple of things. First of all the ranch dressing is watered down and has very little flavor. The second thing is, the last few times I've been there my food comes out within two minutes after my salad does. I'm faced with the dilemma of letting my chicken fried steak get cold or my salad get soggy. I would prefer to eat my salad first and then get my meal hot. Those are a couple of easy fixes. DH had a sirloin and it was a little overdone; I had the chicken with bacon, cheese and something else and I couldn't taste any bacon and the chicken was pretty dry. There are not a lot of places to pick from in Hays, KS and this one I thought would be one of the best, but it was middle of the road. I've been to this steakhouse many times and never had a bad experience. This dinner though was truly a nightmare. I ordered a medium rare kansas city strip steak with fries. When the steak came out I cut into it and realized it was more pink and rare than a usual medium rare steak which I didn't feel comfortable eating. When I asked my server for help he said "well I guess we can put it back on the grill." (That is definitely a health code violation since I had cut into it multiple times with a fork that I had previously used) When the server brought the steak back out from the kitchen I cut into it yet again to find the steak looking exactly the same as the first time. I called my server again and he said he could offer a discount (on my raw steak?) or to put it BACK on the grill (another health code violation??) When he brought it out again I was just so fed up with the experience and pissed that I had to advocate for myself so many times. When it came time for the check I was charged full price. I asked the server if I could receive the discount he offered since my experience had been terrible and he complied. The check came back with $2.80 off of a $28 steak meal that I sent back twice. Husband and I had lunch here yesterday (01/13/2023). We weere greeted by a pleasant young woman who seated us immediately. Our waiter, Josiah, came promptly and took our drinks order. A delightful young man, polite and professional. Husband had the Cheeseburger Combo, cooked medium and I had the best Philly Cheesesteak I've enjoyed in many years. I did ask that no bell peppers be added as they don't like me any more than I like them. Sauce housemade and delicious, but I'd like it a bit thicker so it sticks to the steak better. I also got the Fried Mushrooms. Fresh and battered in house. Totally delicious and tender with what I believe is a housemade Ranch dipping sauce. It's clean, has a lot of Kansas history on it's walls and, the best part? They have actual cloth napkins. We will be back next time we're in Hays. read more

I had high hopes for this steakhouse when we were staying 30 miles down the road in WaKeeney at the KOA. It was decent, but the food was certainly not as good as I hoped for. The steak I ordered, a 12 Oz Rib Eye was well prepared, medium rare, as I ordered. But it was rather thin and wasn't all that tender. I guess I was expecting a better grade of meat. I'm guessing this was USDA Choice at best. I believe they called it Superior but I have no idea what that means. It had OK flavor and wasn't overcooked at least. The baked potato was very good. We upgraded the regular dinner salad for $2 so it came with a hard boiled egg, cherry tomatoes, cheddar cheese curds, cucumber slices, croutons, etc. It was a very good salad. The dinner rolls with sweetened cinnamon butter to start was a nice touch. The wife had the Chicken Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes with creamy pepper gravy and the same upgraded salad I had. The thicken was very tender but the coating didn't adhere very well. All in all though she liked it. There were two rather large pieces of pounded chicken breast. Our bill, with one non-alcoholic beverage, the two upgraded salads totaled $46 before tip which isn't terrible I guess. Anyway, we went home satisfied and had left overs to boot. read more

Grandma's pot roast went to culinary school! We were hoping to make it to Salina from Denver, but with the time change decided to stop in Hays. What a fortuitous event! We stopped at Hickok's and were pleasantly surprised at the high quality of this restaurant. From the service to the wine list to the food, everything was great! My husband enjoyed the pot roast which was juicy and tender. The onions complimented the dish, without overpowering it. I enjoyed a small sirloin and asparagus.. It's hard to get asparagus just right, not over cooked but still tender. Hickok made it perfectly,, just like my steak, which I order rare-medium rare. My steak was flavorful and tender. Even though I ordered the 10 ounce, I took half of it home. (Steak and eggs for breakfast, yum!) My daughter ordered the small filet, a salad and loaded baked potato. It was cooked perfectly to her specifications (different than my own) and her loaded baked potato was piping hot and, as she says, "filled with deliciousness". This restaurant is worth the stop. And, since there was a state wrestling tournament in town the weekend we stopped, it is also worth the short wait. Finally, although we didn't catch our server's name, she was friendly and attentive. The service was great the staff is so friendly and kind and walked us though the menu and a little of the history of the owner. I always come here when visiting hays. I was very disappointed. I ordered lobster bisque and had no garnish, no lobster/crawfish in the soup it was literally just cheese soup... I ordered a sunflower salad didn't get told they were out of egg which was also disappointing. To top it all off never got offered bread apparently you have to ask for it now? (Bread has always been free) When I brought the issue up to a manager I was told I was the problem and kept giving me excuses and being very rude with hand gestures in my face and said I was being rude to the waitress and yet I didn't feel like it was rude to have food I normally have when visiting, not even be the same like I had it last time. It seems like they didn't want to take accountability for messing my dinner up, and told me their waitress is new. (Had no problems with waitress until she started getting an attitude because my food was messed up!) I had to request them to cover one order of lobster bisque as my guest didn't even eat it since it was just straight cheese, and kept getting told that's what the cooks make in the morning.. they tried to charge me full price knowingly messing up my food and I wasn't having it. I will come back and hopefully they get a better manager that will try to offer to remake or a different food item other than just taking the price down when messing up someones dinner. read more
