    Chips and salsa

I thought...Mexican food Vegan? Why not, Let's try. Tucked away in a little strip mall. As we entered, the gentleman behind the counter said you can scan the QR code or use one of the two kiosk to order. Small with some seating decorated with Mexican flavor. As we waited for our order, they brought ice water. We ordered chips and salsa. The salsa was homemade for sure with roasted tomatoes and very good with a kick. When our main meal came..OMG!! Portions are large and The food was pleasantly surprisingly good. My husband said the mole in his meal reminded him of how his mom would make. The beyond meat used was very good. My dish with soy chorizo was amazing as well. We walked away full, happy and had left overs! We would recommend and will come back again!

This is coming from a non-vegan, meat-eater. Overall, I think a vegan who's used to the flavors will really really love it! PARKING - Shared in a strip mall, so would probably be busy during dinner rush, but we were able to find parking no problem. FOOD - Pretty darn good for vegan food! The birria was alright. You can definitely taste, what I assume is, jackfruit. Favorite was the rice and potato tacos! Those were delicious. AMBIANCE - We went during off hours, so the workers were attentive, not busy at all. It was quiet and the place is clean. They have good amount of seating and the decorations are quite nice. SERVICE - You order either through their kiosk or at the register if you have questions. The lady was friendly and helpful. We ate in so they brought the food to us once ready. PRICE - As most vegan spots are, it was a bit on the pricier side, but understandable. You do get a lot of food so it's worth it. I recommend the spot for vegans to take their non-vegan friends.

My boyfriend found this restaurant on Yelp for lunch and when we arrived, we didn't realize this restaurant was 100% vegan! Vegan Mexican foods, what a nice surprise! It's located next to Tokyo Express in Mission Square in Escondido. There's a parking lot with quite a bit of stalls. We got different things on the menu to share with. We got the Surf & Turf Burrito, Beyond Steak Asada Burrito, and the Quesadilla with Chicharron. All the plates came with chips to snack with. We, for some reason, got a side of Chips & Salsa even with all the chips that came with our meals LOL. Wow, thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food! Everything was soooo good - I wouldn't have known the all the ingredients were vegan if I was given my food blindly! I feel that my favorite would be the quesadilla as there was a ton of flavor in there. But my burrito was equally delicious so I can't really choose. Yum! I couldn't fully enjoy the asada burrito experience as there was too much food for me. But my mom seemed to enjoy it! Even as leftovers, they were still really good (besides the soggy wrap). Overall, a pleasant unexpected surprise of vegan Mexican food. It was definitely a great experience and would love to come back for more if I'm ever craving Mexican up in Escondido. Great restaurant for vegetarians who want Mexican!

Delicious! I ordered Phatties via DoorDash while I was at work, so I didn't get the chance to experience the atmosphere in person, but I'll have to stop by another time. The service was fantastic, and my food arrived fresh and exactly how I ordered it. I got the Taquitos De Papa (Potato Taquitos) with guacamole, and it came with a green salsa that was super tasty and had just the right kick. I'd definitely order this again.

When we walked up we initially thought it was closed. The "Open" sign was turned off and it was dim inside. We walked in nonetheless and they were very much open but it was kind of dark and the TV above the front counter where you order was also off. The guy taking orders was friendly and directed us to the QR code for the menu. We got huaraches with Soyrizo, potato taquitos and a cucumber lemonade. The drink was awesome; not overly sweet and it was super fresh. The potato taquitos came piled high with veggies and were jam-packed full of smashed taters. You get five in an order and I'd get them again. The huarache was one long piece of masa topped with refried beans, Soyrizo, fat chunks of potato and veggies. It was pretty filling and we split it between two people. High marks for their red and green salsas too - both were great. If you're looking for tasty vegan Mexican eats, Phatties will scratch your itch. If they look closed, just walk in. They're probably open...maybe.

Omgsh, this place is amazing! I brought my vegan cousin here, and we were all impressed. We tried their famous Phatties burrito, California burrito, and breakfast burrito - they were all made fresh to order and with full of flavors! The burritos arrived PACKED with goodies, piping hot, served with a side of tortilla chips. Upon entering, there are two self-ordering kiosks to the right. After placing our order, we took a seat, and immediately a staff member came out and offered us water, two types of fresh hot sauces, and utensils. Highly recommended, even if you're not vegan!

Pretty fantastic meal. This is the Enmolades (+sour cream +avocado). The sauce is rich and thick and really works well with everything!

Pretty fantastic meal. I got the Enmolades (+sour cream +avocado). The sauce is rich and thick and really works well with everything! My kids had the California burrito and some tacos. All were pretty good. Some of the dishes lacked seasoning (salt), but that was easily remedied with a salt shaker. Also, they have menus on the table (qr code) but you aren't suppose to order with those, they are for looking and then you line up and order. For anyone reading this review to this point, then you probably are already open minded to vegan. Honestly, tastes better than most 'regular' Mexican restaurants I've been to. I'm not a vegan at all, but really enjoyed this spot!

I had the carne asada burrito. It is huge. And delicious. You can't tell it's vegan. And the crispy fries add a little unexpected crunch. Half for lunch. Half for dinner. And I'll be back!

In a word, Phatties is GREAT. It's not easy to find restaurants that are 100% vegan, and especially not MEXICAN restaurants that are 100% vegan, so my wife and I were super excited when we discovered Phatties. Phatties hits all the taco shop favorites -- California burritos, enchiladas, tacos (even "fish" tacos and birria!), quesadillas, and on and on -- and does them in a way that you can hardly tell the difference. In our two visits with friends who live up in Escondido, we've tried the breakfast burrito, elote, birria, enmoladas with mole, quesadilla, California burrito, guacamole with chips, and more. The flavors are top notch, the portions large (no joke, the two bean and cheese burritos we got to-go this past Sunday weighed a TON), and the service friendly. Not as dirt cheap as most taco shops, but I'm willing to pay a little extra (and drive all the way from La Jolla!) to avoid eating the usual lard and dead animals while getting all the sabor. Looking forward to checking out the Phatties food truck in PB soon!

I have had enough great experiences I need to update my review. Definitely more reliable on meal pickup, and timing is great. Would love a menu behind the cash wrap, for forever it was outside on the wall only, so you would have to memorize your order first. Very occasionally they will be out of a protein or high demand menu item, but by now I've had enough things to have several favorites. Not good for groups, it's a little place with no more outside seating, best bet is pickup or only two people to be able to snag a table. Plenty of parking, never had a problem. Food itself is great, huge portions, enjoyed everything I've tried.

Gluten free plate with beans, rice, radish, avocado and corn tortillas stuffed with cactus and vegan cheese and sour cream. delicious

The bolt fries had curly fries, longanisa, guac, cheese and sour cream. Those were my favorite. The flavors blended well together. The shrimp burrito was ok. The rice was hard and old so it was difficult to eat. I would probably recommend skipping the burrito, hence the 4/5. I'm not sure what changed in the kitchen but I pretty bummed on the last 5 times I've gone. I get the California every time I go and add guac for reference, I'm a simple guy. Under-seasoned meat or not enough meat, soggy or dry/stale fries, light on guacamole when added sometimes, missing cheese. The consistency has been really off unfortunately for a pretty simple burrito. My last time I went I ordered the usual California burrito no sour cream add guac, got the burrito and it had sour cream and guac.... But no meat???? It was a big tortilla with sour cream and guacamole only in it lol. I laughed at the mix up and the customer service was great getting a refund (didn't request it they just gave it to me) and replacement burrito. Still decided it was my last time going there after that as even the replacement tasted like the meat had no seasoning on it. Writing this review to hope they turn things around some time in the future, I miss coming here but can't justify spending that much $ for a burrito I'm worried to be bummed about....again.

The first time I visited a few weeks ago, I had a really positive experience. The location was a little hard for me to find, but once I got there, it seemed worth it. I walked in craving a breakfast burrito and was helped by a very nice, slender gentleman at the counter. I asked for a ham, bacon, and sausage breakfast burrito and also requested that it be cut in half. He was friendly, said no problem, and within minutes I had exactly what I ordered. That burrito was delicious. The salsa station was stocked and convenient with self-serve cups readily available, and the atmosphere was nice. The people around me were friendly, and one gentleman even mentioned this was the place that used to be near Peterson's Donuts. Overall, it was a great first impression and I left happy, already planning to come back. Fast forward to today, Saturday, April 25, 2026 around 10:30 AM, and unfortunately, my second experience was the complete opposite. This time there was a young woman working the register, and from the moment I approached, she didn't seem very welcoming. I told her I wanted to order a breakfast burrito but wasn't sure what kind I wanted today. She told me the only options were bacon, egg, cheese and tater tots, or egg and cheese. I politely asked if I could add ham and sausage and pay extra, since that's what I had ordered before. She immediately responded that they "didn't have that type of breakfast burrito." That response confused me because I had literally ordered one there before. I wasn't going to argue, especially because her tone and attitude made me feel like I was bothering her just by asking questions. I then asked if the burrito could be cut in half and never really got a clear response. I also noticed the salsa station no longer had the little self-serve cups available, so I had to ask for those too. The same cashier asked how many I needed, and I said two. A few minutes later, another woman called my name and handed me the burrito. I sat down and realized it wasn't cut in half like I requested. At that point, I had to go back up and ask for a plastic knife and fork just to cut it myself. Which was not a problem or issue for me. I ate half of the burrito, but honestly, it wasn't nearly as good as the first one. The taste was underwhelming, and by the time I left I was just so disappointed. I ended up throwing the other half away after I left. Consistency matters, especially when the first experience set the bar high. The food was great the first time, but the service and quality were lacking the second time around. My honest opinion: if someone is having a bad day, they probably shouldn't be the first face customers interact with at the register. I may update this review depending on how management responds, because I know this place can do better based on my first visit.

I've been to Mi Guadalajara in Escondido a handful of times now, and my wife and I keep coming back…read morebecause, overall, it's a solid spot for Mexican food in North County San Diego. It's got that classic, welcoming family-owned vibe that's been around since the '80s, and we always leave feeling satisfied--even if it's not always perfect. The interior is pretty cool and distinctive. Think big, spacious dining areas with vibrant traditional Mexican decor: colorful murals on the walls (some really elaborate ones that give it almost a resort-like feel), solid wood furniture, chandeliers, and that open, multi-level layout that makes it feel grand without being stuffy. It's large enough that even on busier nights, you rarely have to wait long for a table, which is a huge plus. Service is one of the consistent highlights here. The staff is friendly, quick, and chatty in the best way--they remember little things, keep the chips and salsa flowing, and make you feel like regulars even if it's just your third or fourth visit. No complaints there; it's fast, accurate, and genuinely warm. Now, the food: it's always fresh, which I really appreciate--no skimping on ingredients or anything that tastes like it's been sitting around. Portions are generous, and when it's on point, it's really good. We've had some great meals here that make us think, "Yep, this is why we come back." But I'll be honest--there's some inconsistency from visit to visit. The flavors don't always match what I remember from previous times. Sometimes the seasoning is spot-on and bold; other times, it's dialed way back. Our most recent dinner was a perfect example of that. I ordered the chicken enchiladas, hoping for that rich, comforting flavor, but they came out pretty mild--almost under-seasoned, lacking that punch I was craving. The rice on the side was a bit tough and dry, like it had overcooked or sat too long, which made it harder to enjoy. It wasn't terrible by any means (nothing was inedible, and the rest of the plate was fine), but it just didn't hit the high notes we've gotten before. It's frustrating because we've had better enchiladas and fluffier rice here on other trips. That said, the inconsistency hasn't been bad enough to turn us off. The highs are high enough, the atmosphere is enjoyable, the service is great, and it's a reliable option when we're in the mood for Mexican without venturing too far. My wife and I still enjoy it and will definitely be back--we're hoping the next visit brings back that memorable flavor we love. If you're in the Escondido area and want a big, festive Mexican spot with friendly people and usually tasty food, give Mi Guadalajara a try. It's worth checking out!

Again liked the decor, they need to curate it down a little. Music and better lighting would elevate it so much. We got two different menus and got confused but apparently one was the old menu. Drinks... 6/10. My mangoneada needed more mango and tajin, it needed more flavor. My friends thought their drinks were also just ok as well. One had to ask for more hot sauce for her michelada, they only had tapatío. She said it was bland. Foods also just ok. The birria tacos were the best part, def would order again. Tortilla didn't split, good portion and the consomé was good. Cheese dip tasted like velveta. Nachos with beef were decent. Fried ice cream was not good. I've had this dish many times and it was stale and didn't taste fried. Idk if the cereal was stale or the ice cream was so frozen but it was not good. The salsa that comes with the chips is more of a tomato based and we weren't offered other salsas. We asked and got two others but the flavor was just not there. Paid about 60 bucks with tip for two happy hour items, a mangonada and dessert. Again, if the flavors were there, it would be worth and I would be back. It's such a unique space, easy to get to, plenty of parking, beautiful art in the center portion, they are so close to getting it right.
