Like many other reviewers, I found Dr. Pham through a Google search for something like "San Diego dentist does not judge." Again, like many others, I'm a grown up, I don't have any major fears/issues that I know of, but I dread -- absolutely hate -- the thought of going to the dentist. It's not very rational, but it is what it is. And my fear of going to the dentist (because I know how bad my teeth are, and don't want to be made to feel less than dirt by the dentist, not to mention the pain and horrible drilling noise), only digs my hole deeper, because I delay going for years and then end up having expensive and painful dental emergencies. It's a brutal cycle, and I should be man enough to break it, but so far I haven't.
Anyway, I finally went to Dr. Pham and was crying happy tears on the inside halfway into the initial visit. First off, I am convinced that Dr. Pham and ALL his staff are way too nice to work in a dental office, lol. Look, my teeth suck. But he will actually make even the hardest realist believe that "it's not that bad," and he will find a way to complement your oral hygiene ("your gums are really healthy"), even when you know your teeth are a mess. It's the kind of small boost that is needed at such a low time. Also, I have been there 4-5 times (and my wife has been there at least twice), and I can tell you that he and his staff *do not judge* you. Yes, you may have bad and neglected teeth that will take a lot of money abs time to fix. But you will never be made to feel bad about your situation, and instead they get on to the work of fixing things. I'm sure they know we beat ourselves up more than any dentist could; they always lift the spirits, find the bright side, and make it seem as if it's not nearly as bad as you thought it would be. It really works in relaxing you and peeling away the layers of fear and anxiety in the dental chair.
Please note: they do not seem to take HMOs. And absent group coverage through a large or public employer, we all know that individual dental insurance pretty much sucks. So the best I can do is to get a dental discount card, and pay cash or payments for my treatments. But this should be evidence of how great the atmosphere is there for people afraid of going to the dentist. I could get an HMO plan and pay much less at some second or third tier dentist much closer to home, but as long as Dr. Pham is practicing and I live within a 75 mile radius of him, I will do whatever I can to keep him as my dentist. I found an answer to my dental fears, and I don't ever want to go back to one of those other dentists.
Sorry for the long post , but I think many of you understand that this can be an emotional issue for a lot of us.
P.S. I have been to a lot of dentists where the novocaine shot often hurts (shooting pain down a nerve, etc.). Somehow, even though I steel myself each time for a painful shot, Dr. Pham's shots have never hurt. This is pretty remarkable, and I hope it stays true. read more
