Listen, this place is great. Ordered for pickup tonight and it was absolutely awesome…read more There was a few of us so we ordered a bunch of food and shared. Service was great, and the man on the phone was incredibly kind. I believe it is family owned and it shows. When my girlfriend got there she wanted to pay with cash, unfortunately she didn't have the right amount (misheard me over the phone). Being short $5 cash the man tried to say it was totally fine- obviously she refused and paid the remainder by card (it's COVID, we're not taking money from these places that need it). But how incredibly nice of him was it to offer! So kind. Still though, the food is most important. Pad Thai: I love this sort of authentic tasting, not over the top Pad Thai. I've had it in Thailand and this is very close. It has a depth of flavour while still tasting like real food. That's impressive because price-wise it's VERY close if not better priced, and it was made in 15(!!?) minutes. Very Thai indeed! Pang Leang (spicy yellow curry). OPHHH, said I like a little spicy and it was very manageable but soooo good. Seriously, GET THIS. It's so flavourful and saviour. I got it with the coconut rice which is also great. A bit of sweet (very small, not overpowering) that cuts through the spice. Pork Spring Rolls: unreal. Crunchy as, not very oily and thick. Just really good! Get it on the side. Satay Chicken: Good. My least favourite but definitely good. Just not huge in skewered chicken. Get this place. It's great and fast, perfect for a date night in!

I used to think that I had Thai food in Edmonton all figured out. In the past I really enjoyed The…read moreKing & I for Thai dining until they closed down during the pandemic. Since then, I can't say that I've been especially impressed or enamoured by any other Thai restaurants in the city... But I hadn't tried Sawaddee yet. Owned by a Thai family from Bangkok and open since 2015, Sawaddee was named Best Restaurant Outside City Limits in CBC Edmonton's Best Restaurants 2019 list (and by "outside city limits" they mean Sherwood Park). I absolutely did not mind the 20 minute drive in the name of delicious Thai food. "Sawaddee" means hello in Thai and I was really looking forward to saying hello to this restaurant and finding out all about what they had to offer. You will locate Sawaddee in a strip mall type of area with pictures of their food emblazoned on the windows - it's pretty difficult to miss. Entering the space on a Sunday evening, I was pleasantly surprised! This place is super cute!! (I'm not sure why I would have expected otherwise.) The decor inside is full of bright jewel-toned colours - namely a joyful magenta that feels quintessentially Thai somehow. Swirling white tiles are a striking accent while gorgeous pieces of Thai art and placemats adorned with golden-thread elephants finishes the atmosphere. It's like a little slice of Thailand. On top of this, the wonderful staff are incredibly friendly, embodying the land of smiles. Once settled into a cozy booth, I was excited for my forever Thai drink order, Thai Iced Tea ($4.50). This Thai beverage lives in my heart and I pretty much can't order anything else. However, we were incredibly amazed to learn that Sawaddee serves Chang beer!! Our server casually mentioned that they carry Thai beer to which we immediately responded "do you have Chang?!" and were delighted by his response that they did. We loved enjoying this beer when we traveled through Thailand in 2016 and haven't been able to find it anywhere since. It seems that Sawaddee is the place! My Thai iced tea arrived in all of it's orange glory, a strong black tea mixed with sweetened condensed milk. This tea is unlike anything else because of how milky and sweet it is. Actually, it reminds me a bit of Hong Kong-style milk tea, which is another milky tea preparation. But the Thai version is certainly something all its own. No visit to a Thai restaurant is complete without it! (Although now that Chang is an option I may sometimes choose the boozier route.) The colourful menu boasts many dishes from salads, soups, curries, noodles, and plenty of seafood. I liked that there was a photo of every single dish so that if you were unfamiliar with what something is you can see it. (I remember this being common in Thailand as well.) Although one thing that I couldn't help but notice is that many of the items in the appetizer and dessert sections have been blocked out. It seems that they have decided to stop selling many of the items that were originally printed on the menu and that makes me wonder what I'm missing out on! I know that one of these items is the Curry Puff - a dish that I love and was hoping to try! As an alternate appetizer we ordered the Kanom Pang Na Moo (Minced pork toast, cilantro, egg, cucumber salad with onion - $10.00) instead. This fried bread and pork served with cucumber relish was tasty and addictive. Eaten as a finger food snack, we couldn't get enough of it. The bread was crispy with wonderfully crunchy edges and the pork and egg mixture on top was some kind of magic. The cucumber salad does a great job of adding acidity to the dish and balancing the fried heaviness. I'd love to eat these all day! Thai food involves complex layers of flavour and sophisticated balances; spicy, sour, a little bitter, salty, herby. Colour and texture are important; crispy, soft, cold, hot. This interplay between elements is what makes Thai food so thrilling and compelling. Expect to eat your food with only a fork and spoon - such is the Thai way! Our next dish was a salad, the Som Tum (Spicy papaya mixed with tomato, green bean, carrot & peanut - $14.00), one of my favourites. I had a version of this at a night market in Krabi that has stuck with me and I have been chasing the spicy papaya dreams ever since. The version at Sawaddee was very good. A green papaya salad is supposed to include tomato and I was happy to see that this one did. Bathed in a zesty dressing, the spice level was just right and the crisp freshness of the salad was able to shine. The peanuts added a desirable crunch texture. A very good som tum! Since this was our first visit, Pad Thai (Stir fried thin rice noodle or vermicelli with tofu, egg, peanut and tamarind sauce. Choice of chicken or prawn - $19.00) was going to be a must. This noodle dish is everywhere in Thailand, from high-end restaurants to street food stalls. I was very happy with this version because the tamarind flavour was at the forefront. In some (less good) r

It's also generally quiet enough to have a nice conversation, if you're a talker like me. The service was quick and friendly, and they were very good at reccomending dishes! We found this particularly helpful for choosing what meat/protein to put in our meals, and we all agreed that they knew what was best. As for the food, it was the most absolutely wonderful and authentic Thai I have ever had. Every dish was flavourful, fairly priced, and came in a huge portion! We have never gotten a single bad thing there (and we experiment often), and we have never left without takeout containers full to the brim. The leftovers are always amazing, too. I could go on and on about how much I love this restaurant, truly. What a lovely place to dine in St Albert that I wish I had discovered so much sooner! If you're interested in what to try, my favourites are the Pad Thai with chicken, or the Pad See Eiw with chicken or tofu. I'm not a beef lover, but they make it quite well there I will say. The curries are quite good but some of them get fairly spicy, at least for me. The peanut curry is definitely my favourite! As for appetizers, they have these excellent deep-fried crab and cream cheese dumplings that I can never get enough of! Be aware though, there are lots of peanuts used in recipes, so be careful if you have an allergy.

Tried this place twice about a month apart, the food is great but there's inconsistent portions and service can a bit slow as it's a mom & pop restaurant. Seating arrangements are ok but can definitely could use a deep clean/upgrade - old time hole in the wall look, feel & vibe. During our latest visit, the restaurant opened up a few minutes late as owners were running a bit late. Service was slower as there was only one person attending 6+ tables that came in about the same time. The food tasted great but again was inconsistent with portions & plating. We both ordered the same Pad Thai Tom yum at the same time & one plate completely was missing mushrooms & lacked bean sprouts while the other had an abundance. The rice curry dishes are good but could use a much bigger portion of rice.

My wife's friend actually made a reservation at the start of the week since this was a rather popular Thai restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious. It's truly one of the very best Thai restaurants we've ever been to (definitely the best out of the ones we've tried in various trips to Canada). All the dishes were ordered were quite good. My favorite was the Spicy Basil Eggplant tofu dish. It was seasoned to perfection and the eggplant was somehow not mushy like the majority of the time at other restaurants. The only dish that was only "ok" was the drunken noodles. I think the sauce could've been a tad more spicy for my tastes. For dessert, the Thai Tea Tiramisu was quite good. It really tastes like the Thai Iced Tea drink that I had at this restaurant. The service by the staff was superb as well. Overall, this restaurant is a must visit when in the Edmonton area!
