I had the worst experience @PH on Saturday. My appointment was w/ Tanya Walker. I asked for a Purple permanent color. She insisted on using a violet rinse ( wish I never asked for) She also use chemicals for the rinse. Once she shampooed me color was gone. She did attempted to redeem herself which meant more chemical and a purple color in a jar. She was told not to put it under the dryer but didnt it anyway! The color turned out to be a mess!@ She then used a semi color to correct the purple mess. Now my hair is a dingy brown. Now my hair is dry and over processed. The stylist still charged me 80.00 ( said 75) I was in the salon from 11 in the morning until 6 at night!! This was a very painful experience..I hope I can bring my hair back to life.. read more

The place is cute. The receptionist and most of the staff were very nice and welcoming. That's where the positives end. Jose was judgemental of my parenting choices and not detail-oriented. First time experience for me. I had a wonderful layer cut with shampoo and moisturizer for my hair. Stylist Sara was awesome. She listened to all my requests and performed everything according to my requirements. One thing about the store I felt bad is the dog that was present in the salon. It was wandering here and there and licking my legs. I didn't like that. Sometimes customers don't like it. Overall good experience and price is also feasible when compared to other salons. I've always been a "need a haircut now" kind of gal and have typically gone wherever I can get in. Preferred Salon has made me a convert. Not only were they able to get me in for a same-day appointment, the entire staff was incredibly friendly, even when I showed up a few minutes late. (Side note: this is in the same strip mall as Walker Brothers, not the one with Toys R Us.) The biggest win: José did a fantastic job cutting and styling my hair, taking off minimal length and transforming my self-described mangy mane to a polished style. At my request, he also gave a great recommendation to tame my flyaways with absolutely no pressure to buy. Bonus: the haircut price was very reasonable: comparable to Ulta and about half of what I've spent at Tricoci. I definitely will be going back to this place and will even wait a few days if needed to get in. I highly recommend this place. read more

First time here today and I could not be more disappointed. First when she had me rinse out my hair she had me kneel on a chair with my head upside down so it would be easier for her lol. Then told me the color will be wonky for a while until I wash it a few times. Mind you I came in to get my blonde blonder and a shadow root not anything complicated at all. She complained the entire time that it was taking a long time and she was doing the job with only 2 hands and it requires 4 blah blah blah. I went to the register to pay and my total was $331.00. I paid then went to the restroom. I saw my hair is blue and yellow in some spots. So when I told her I didn't think the hair was worth $331.00 she was well what would you like me to do? I have very dark dye all over my neck and head that was never cleaned off. The only reason I came to this salon to begin with is because my original hair girl moved to California. It's gotten a really horrible haircut and Tonib was the listener for my fears and thoughts about how to help my haircut and was very thoughtful and attentive to detail working through what needed to be done and talked with me about ways I could wear it after. Absolutely love this place! I was recommended to go here by my boyfriend. And I wasn't disappointed. I got my virgin hair dyed for the first time by Michelle and had no regrets. For some reason I went to another hair salon near my house and had the worst experience. Michelle fixed my hair! She's the best! Best cuts and color I've ever had. Also does tape extensions which I love since I have such fine hair. I can't tell you how many complements I get on my hair. Make an appointment with MICHELLE now! You won't regret it. I will never go anywhere else! I have been going here for 3 years, despite living in Chicago. With my work being in the NW suburbs, I found it impossible to schedule time to get my hair and nails done without ruining my weekends. Not only are the hours extremely favorable to anyone who cannot make it from 9-5, this is the best my hair has ever looked! As a blond with naturally dark brown hair, I am always amazed at how Michelle makes my hair look and feel do great each time I go. She is an expert in color, and does fabulous cuts and styles. In addition, Kristen always finds a way to squeeze in my nails during my color and her mani/pedis are the fabulous and performed in an extremely sanitary environment. The true charm of this hidden gem is that any of the stylists can step in if necessary and I have never had a bad experience with anyone who has worked on my hair. They are all experienced and have a true passion for their craft. The owner, Toni, truly puts her heart and soul into creating the kind of fun, inviting environment you would be equally comfortable bringing your best girlfriend, mom, or even your husband to! Every time I go, I wind up in conversation with the women on either side of me getting their hair done. In addition to all of the great perks, the one thing I truly cherish is that each stylist is a full service stylist - you don't have a different person coloring, cutting, and then styling your hair and leaving you feeling ripped off. I have been going to Preferred for about 12 years. I have booked with 4 of the stylists there and have been consistently pleased. Let me tell you why I am a long time customer... The staff treats you like a queen/king. The moment you walk in the door, you are warmly greeted with a smile and asked for your coat and if you would like a beverage...just like visiting your best girlfriend's house - very comfortable, no snooty attitudes. The girls and Jose are always upbeat and the conversation is always interesting and appropriate. They are great at figuring out if I want to chat during my service of just want to sit quietly after a long day. You are seated at your stylists chair pretty much on time. At other salons, I have stupidly waited for up to 45 minutes past my appointment time, very irritating. Preferred is very respectful of your time! The stylists are excellent at listening and deciphering what you want and if your hair is suited for that style (really important). I personally appreciate the suggestions they make and the time they take before they start cutting to absolutely make sure that you will be pleased with the finished style. No surprises at the end. They are always taking classes on current styles, techniques and trends. They keep me looking stylish and fresh instead of being stuck in a time warp (common to see in middle age women like me). I get a lot of compliments on my hair & hair color. Other good things about Preferred: Head & neck massage after shampoo (aaahhh!).The shop is clean, clean, clean! Customer smocks in good shape. No overwhelming chemical smells. Mani/Pedi service too. Appointments are easy to make. Lots of free parking. Prices are great! read more

Everyone at this salon is amazing. They treat you like family. You don't know where the time goes when you're there because everyone is talking and laughing. Whether it's your first time or you're a repeat customer, they treat you with respect. Sara does a great job with my hair. She listens and makes sure I'm happy with my hair before I leave. I have naturally curly hair and like to straighten it and play with the color and highlights, so it's not the quick trim and out. I have absolutely no idea what the last reviewer is talking about. This is an excellent salon. I've been getting my hair done here for years. They've always been polite, offered me something to drink, and never make me wait. The stylists are top notch, and the dogs are pretty cute, too. For whatever reason, yelp has two entries for this salon. If you google preferred hair salon, you'll see that yelp has another page for this salon with over a four star rating. I've been going to Michelle for 4 years, and she never disappoints! I expressed to Michelle my concerns about my fine, thin hair, and she recommended tape in extensions. Michelle went out of her way to find me the perfect tape in extension for MY hair. I don't know how I ever lived without them!! They are beyond worth it, and I would NEVER go to anyone else. Michelle puts such thought and care into the placement of the extensions, to ensure they are not visible and last longer than the usual tape in brands out there. Cannot talk highly enough about this salon, my extensions, and the care Michelle provides for my hair. read more
