What can I say about Winstub Pfifferbriader? Maybe it really comes down to "Borderline tourist trap with a considerable rest of originality".
As we strutted along in the inner city of Strasbourg in search for a nice place to eat, we found out the hard way that this isn't such an easy ting to do after 2:30 p.m.
Most of the kitchens close at 2 - 2:30 so our pool of options was shrinking by the second. Fortunately enough, we found a place that looked very welcoming and old-fashioned that still had a somewhat opened kitchen, if we ordered quickly.
So we did. Its very unpleasant to rush through the menu but then again, we were to blame. Nevertheless, not all waiters/waitresses were as polite as one would expect looking at their prices. These were considerably high. Sauerkraut with trimmings for 16,80€ is not exactly a bargain. When I asked one of the waitresses whether I could have some mashed potatoes, she looked at me like I asked for something profane. They also seemed to give us not the best seats. There was literally no other customer in sight. The only people we saw frequently were employees having their smoking breaks and a street performing Charlie Chaplin double (who, by the way, was outstanding) and his spectators.
The food was prepared very quickly, which arrouse suspicion that it wasn't "a la maison". The Sauerkraut was good. The potatoes however were not only hardly tasteable but also as cold as they looked like. The meat was good, but also not so warm as they should be. My friends obviously made better choices as they really liked what they ordered.
The place looked very cozy on the in- and outside. The house seemed to be very old-fashioned and original. Also, the decoration was very nicely done. What disappointed though were the very dirty restrooms.
Is it a "must visit"? Definately no. The alternatives in the area are countless and from past experience I know that there is better performance to be found here. Still I will give Winstub Pfifferbriader the benefit of the doubt as we were very late. read more
