Since we are here during Christmas Market time I made sure to book way ahead to ensure a table. During Christmas market you can only book until 645pm. After that it is walk ins only. The interior space is very warm and rustic and it is literally in a cave, at least it looks like that. Either way it's beautiful. The waitstaff are great. Very friendly and very helpful. We started with drinks, then for appetizer we split at mushrooms in a cream sauce in a puff pastry over a salad. Excellent. Then the main course. Chicken cooked in a Riesling cream sauce and Pork cheeks braised in Pinot Noir. Side bowl of spaezelle. Everything they put in front of us was absolutely delicious. The meats were so very tender that they melted in your mouth. This place in the shadow of the Cathedral is a MUST GO.

What an amazing Alsatian dining experience! The hosts were great, and they were able to take our orders and provide recommendations in English, which we appreciated! The food was some of the best we've had so far on our trip, and while the prices weren't extremely cheap, they were a good deal for the quantity and quality of food and drink we had that night. Definitely give them a try if you're looking for food Alsatian cuisine in the area!!

Incredible ambience- authentic food and reasonably priced...Yelp you have done it again! My wife and I are here in Straussbourg and wanted authentic regional dishes for lunch. The onion pie, tart flambeas and rosti potatoe dishes were so delicious and rich!

First I'll start with location - right across the street from the Notre Dame cathedral? Very hard to beat. 2nd, it's underground - feels pretty cool down there (but it's nice and warm in the winter!) Service was outstanding, and their English is far better than my limited French. I ordered the Gurtlerhoft menu, and selected the escargot (good, but not as garlicy as I'm used to) and the 6-meat sourkraut (good but benefitted from a little salt). I also ordered a half of the traditional Flammekueche (I wanted to experience what the region is known for) and that was excellent. Drinks were reasonably priced, and the chocolate mousse was delicious (how could it not be?)

Restaurant located across from the cathedral. Located underground, rustic cave setting very nice and romantic. Ordered the Escargot and the traditional Flammkuchen. Dishes were very good and not pricy. Service was ok, after food was served did not really check on us until we asked for the check.

Alsatian salad -- melted cheese and lardons with lettuce -- sort of odd but decent

Solid enough tarte flambee and completely serviceable choucroute in a really rustic (ie old and somewhat dusty) setting. Service was minimal and prices were a bit high but pretty happy we went.

Seeing the reviews and the location we had to try this restaurant and we were so glad we did! Sitting in a n ancient cavern eating great Alsatian food and wine, what could be better. Oh yeah, the dessert flambé ! Wonderful experience with great service.

Caveau Gurtlerhoft has one of the most romantic, cozy settings for a restaurant, located in an underground cave right outside the Strasbourg Cathedral. Everything about the setting and the plating of the food is so picturesque, and the dishes themselves were delicious too! We started with a half order of the Flammekueche, a flatbread spread with onion, quark, cream, and topped with smoked bacon, mushrooms, and melted cheese. The flatbread developed a nice crisp in the oven, and the savory and sour topping was simply a great complement. Think of this as a very unique, umami take on a pizza! For our main course, we ordered the backeoffe, a traditional Alsatian stew made with chunks of lamb, beef, and pork cooked in white wine with carrots and sliced potatoes. But of all of the ingredients in the stew, the potatoes were definitely the most prominent and came in the largest quantity. The stew was warming and delicious, and the sauerkraut we ordered on the side made for a nice complement (though it was a bit on the salty side). Overall, a great traditional restaurant in a beautiful setting. The value and service you'll find here are excellent, though I found some of the flavors of the dishes either a bit muddled or overly seasoned. However, it's definitely worth a try if traditional Alsatian dishes are the order of the night!

surprisingly good as a place right in the middle of hottest tourism place. It was fun to walk down and enter the cave underground. The lobby looked very interesting with up and down levels. The menu is half French and half German. We have tried Escargot which has no shells. It was oily and not really full of flavors in my opionion. Liked cheesy flatbread which was like half sheet size with great cheese. Cheeks of pork was very tender with shallot and radish together. Just a little bit overly seasoned. It comes with a grilled pasta piece which was great. Named Roasted pork knuckle was actually braised in a ceramic pot. It was really cooked to soft and tender and great flavor. my favorite on this table. Wine choices are great. We all loved Riesling and Pinot Noir. Services were great. A place definitely will come back in the future.

Delicious food with a warm, inviting atmosphere! Happened upon this place while visiting in nearby Kaiserslautern. Were looking for a sophisticated bite and we found it here. Polite and friendly staff. They did not seem bothered a bit by the fact that we spoke English. We really enjoyed the underground experience and cave-style interior. The menu boasts an assortment of French and German items with a breakdown in case you are unfamiliar with the cuisine. The food came out quickly and was taken up just the same. Great wines and desserts. We ordered creme brulee and flan to end the night...amazing!!!

This restaurant is now going to be haunting me in my dreams it was that good . First off, the onion tart is crack. The perfect crust with fluffy eggs and onions and bacon. I would say generally I'm not the biggest fan of quiches, but the onion tart is a must. Then we had the white asparagus special with a soft boiled egg and lentils with the most flavorful dressing ever. I was with my two daughters and wife and we split the onion tart and asparagus special as an appetizer, and literally a fight almost broke out among us. Then we split the steak, pork filet and potato pancakes. Just absolutely delicious. My older daughter does not like salad and she actually couldn't believe she liked the side salad that came with her steak. Not the lame iceberg bagged salad mix you get it some restaurants. This was frise, endive and radicchio in a vinaigrette that was spot on. Best french fries ever as a side on the pork fillet. Incredible home fries as the side on the steak. I wish I would've taken photos to post, but the dishes were getting destroyed as soon as they came out. We had the rhubarb pie as a dessert and Panna cotta. We are coming back tomorrow for lunch and getting the asparagus and tart again. It was that good.

And when your walking tour guide tells you a fun story about a Michelin-starred restaurant and it's interesting name, you decide to take yourself there. I haven't been to a Michelin-starred restaurant in a very long time and I have never been to one alone, but it was still a lovely experience. The staff was very attentive, kind, and knowledgeable. The food was inventive and enjoyable, though I admit I had a hard time understanding the waitstaff sometimes, so I wasn't always sure what I was eating, but luckily I'm willing to eat anything. I had the discovery menu (appetizer, fish, entree, dessert), 3-course wine pairing, coffee, and the restaurant's "extras" which included some very tasty amuse bouche at the beginning, small desserts with the coffee, and even a cookie to take a home. I did not order from the cheese cart, but it was fun to watch it wheeled out for others. For a Michelin restaurant, I found it very reasonably priced and accessible, though I'm not sure I can say I was completely blown away by the food (wine was fantastic, though). But I did see the crocodile! Which is where the restaurant gets it's name: in the 1800s a sailor came back from Egypt with a stuffed crocodile and had the bright idea to use it as a marketing (who wouldn't want to see a stuffed crocodile?!?)

We came in for lunch and went with the market menu they were offering. We also ended up adding a cheese course, because when in France! Can't say no to cheese! I don't know if it's the primacy effect, but I loved the first course. It was like a little egg soup dish. So warm and hearty, it was just comforting. Everything else was good too, but the cheese was a major highlight for me. The waiter selected a sampling of cheeses for us from a huge cheese cart. It was fun to watch and see all the cheeses on display.
