This place has my heart. I have heard so many wonderful things and I was so happy to be able to visit. The inside may be small for ordering, but truly the adventure is within the glass cases. I was so happy to see all of the variety and flavors within. I will have to say I can't pick a singular favorite donut, they were all delicious. If you want to try something a little out there, be sure to ask the lovely ladies behind the counter. As we were checking out, one of the ladies asked if we liked peanut butter and I was so glad she did. She handed us a glazed cinnamon roll with peanut butter frosting. We stopped on a whim here on our way to Denver. AMAZING AND YUMMY!! Everything we tried was soft, moist, and perfect. The lady that helped me was very helpful and not sure if she gave me the wrong price or not but she gave a reasonable price for my order. She's also very accommodating when later down the week I changed the schedule for pick up. My order is ready for pick up when I get there and it turned out great. This has long been my favorite Omaha bakery. They used to have the very best German Chocolate Long Johns. Something has changed. But once you know about the delicious pastry cases inside, you'll find yourself driving out of your way to stop by. I was pretty excited to give them a try, and I was even more eager when I stepped out of the car and was invited in by heavenly smells of sweet cinnamon and sugar. There were a few other customers, but the service was still very quick and friendly. (They even handed me an extra goodie for my daughter after we'd finished our purchase). We tried out a few different cake donuts, a glazed donut featuring streusel, a Dutch letter, and an old fashioned sour cream donut. Each and every one was wonderful. Admittedly, the Dutch letter was far from Jaarsma (Pella, Is) quality, but for someone who craves then often, it would hit the spot when I can't make the 3-4 hour drive. The cake donuts were perfect in texture and taste, and the glazed with streusel was amazing in every way! Old fashioned donuts are my go-to, and theirs definitely measures up. This is a great unassuming donut shop that you will not regret checking out. This little donut place has numerous options to pick from - both cake and yeast donuts. When we went today I'd say they had over 20 different flavor options. We got 6 different donuts to try: Apple fritter, strawberry, blueberry crumble, pumpkin, peanut crusted, and an old fashioned. I'm a particular fan of cake donuts. The cake donuts were not dry at all. All the donuts had great flavor. The prices are very reasonable as well. Our total for 6 donuts was around $8. Last night there was a huge storm in the area that knocked out the power. There are practically no businesses open in the area, but this morning I saw Pettit's advertising that they are open. A coworker and myself went in and unfortunately they do not have power but they did get their order of fresh donuts from the bakery downtown. I only brought our company's credit card thinking they had power, and we were still able to get 2 dozen donuts for the office! I will be going back later to give her the cash, but I just wanted to give them a shout out for being so helpful and coming together in times of need. In the last couple of years Omaha had seen new players in the doughnut arena--square doughnuts, doughnuts piled high with added ingredients, and unusual flavor trends. But sometimes I just want a doughnut, not a fancy one, but the tried and true. That's when I head over to a doughnut shop that has been going strong for 65 years. That's when I go to Pettit's Pastry on north 16th St. it's a functional set up-- nothing fancy. Just go in the front door, stand in line and peruse the glass case with so many different standard doughnut choices it's hard to decide. Often Bookguy and I can't decide on one, so we end up with two or three. Most recently we managed to leave with one each, a fruit filled long John for him and a yummy glazed old fashioned for me. They are so fresh and not a bit dry. I also ordered a coffee but I can't comment on that since I left it in Bookguy's car when he dropped me off at home. Neither one of us remembered it until it was frozen solid 2 days later. I would have given them a 5 but the counter help didn't enforce the mask mandate which was clearly stated on the door. The counter help was safely ensconced behind plexiglass with masks. But the customers in line were not protected from the guy who decided to flaunt the mask rule. I think he should have been given a mask or told to come back with one. One customer called him out on it & he said he didn't have a mask. Yeah, right. read more

Pettit's was my first doughnut experience when moving to omaha as a freshman in college due to the near location. We used to walk down there from the dorms when we would wake up too late to eat at the dining halls on the weekends. As we got older, we would bike and sometimes drive because we moved further away. Pettit's was always a tasty treat, and although probably the culprit to my freshman 15, the smell of doughnuts when driving by always reminds me of being 18 and a free college student. They make all their pastries on site, and have doughnuts, muffins, and the basic pastries. They do cakes and the usual catering type jobs, and the people who work there are so sweet (harhar), calling you sugar and honey (a result of working with sugar and honey?) I stick to the simple glazed and usually pick one other type to try for the day. The first bite of the glazed doughnut is a soft chewy bite, with glaze flaking on your lips and cheeks as you dive in. Pure doughnut bliss. I've found one doughnut place I like even better than Pettits but you're going to have to travel to philly for that one! Oh and I forgot- if you visit on saturdays near closing you can get a huge box of whatever they have left for 50% off. talk about a steal. read more

Don't let the interior/exterior scare you away! The building is run down and doesn't look new and fresh (especially the carousel display inside), but the cake we got was THE MOST MOIST and delicious layer cake!! Light and velvety texture, not heavy and dense and the buttercream wasn't too sugary sweet. We got TONS of compliments on this cake, everyone asking where we got it! A great selection even at 9:30 in the morning and the staff is engaging with lots of knowledge about how to enjoy their creations best when getting back home to eat them (if the donuts make it that far lol) they are always very consistent and not to mention that many gas stations in Omaha also get their donuts from here to sell. This place was a pleasant surprise! The shop is located in the corner of an uninviting street and the exterior of the building is not very appealing. But go inside!!! It has a very old school donut shop vibe. The 2 large pastry cases are full of amazing donuts and treats like cinnamon rolls, streusel, sticky buns. The customer service was wonderful! We asked the lady that assisted us what her fave donut was and she told us about the Katie Special..a double glazed donut with streusel atop. It was FANTASTIC! Woke up this morning to a delayed flight out of Omaha. I thought to myself donuts would be good this morning. Googled donuts and Pettit's Pastry came up, it was a .6 mile walk so I got dressed and made the trek. So glad I did. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by a smiling friendly face asking me if i wanted a box or a bag. I explained that it was my first time in and was told that smells are free! I usually prefer the regular doughnuts over cake doughnuts but I decided to branch out and give them another chance. I picked a regular maple glazed doughnuts and a frosted spiral cake doughnut. Sadly, I didn't care for the regular doughnut. The texture was comparable to that dry, airy texture of a store bought doughnut. However, the sweetness level of the maple glaze was just perfect, unlike that of Krispy Kreme's maple glaze which makes you feel like a cavity will develop after finishing one. As for the cake doughnut... YUM! To my surprise, it actually beat out the maple glaze in taste, texture, and overall delight. The nutmeg and cinnamon really gave a nice kick of flavor, while complementing the icing on top. The ridges also made eating the doughnut more fun, similar to how eating wavy Lay's chips are better than the original. Overall, the cake doughnut, is the winner of the two. Thanks to Pettit's, I've reconsidered trying more cake doughnuts in the future! read more

As much as I would love to give Pettit's 5 stars I can't. I'm disappointed. I got married yesterday and they were responsible for my cake & my donuts. I called last week to confirm the delivery time, location, head count, etc. And all was good to go. They showed up 3 hours late to my wedding in the middle of my reception to set up 275 donuts and our cake. Not all of the donuts we ordered were correct, our cake was lop-sided. Apparently their was a miscommunication...not sure who's fault that was. They did make everything from scratch and get it to the venue. I'm just disappointed that I was never called or communicated with that there was an issue. I will be expecting a partial refund.
