Carol did an excellent job of working with my beagle mix, Wrigley. She is both patient and kind, all while bringing a great energy to the class. She takes things step by step and goes out of her way to be very helpful. Working in a group class with other dogs is an excellent training experience as the distraction adds a necessary real world element to the class. The difference in all the dogs from Week 1 versus the end of class was extremely noticeable. I would highly recommend Carol if you are interested in building a relationship with your dog while teacing it the fundamental skills it will need to thrive. read more

On Monday I took my dog to have her nails trimmed and filed down and the girl cut her down to the nerve. Thankfully my dog did not make a sound so I assume she did not feel it. I've been taking her here for the past couple of years to have her nails trimmed and never had a problem until now. Yes my dog moves around a lot and does not enjoy having her nails cut, however, this is the first time she's ever been cut and bled. I personally feel that it was caused by the lack of experience of the girl that cut her nails. Clearly she's not accustomed to cutting the nails of an energetic puppy. It sure would've been nice of her to say that and I would've had the girl that was holding my dog do the nail cutting. She's done it in the past with no issues. They should've switched roles. Additionally, she wasn't apologetic at all and tried to put the blame on my dog for moving a lot. She acted very nonchalant and told me that they applied quick stop to stop the bleeding. Don't go here for grooming.... They don't listen and do their own thing, which means going to the clippers and shaving. It's winter out and cold and I told them specifically to NOT shave my Cairn Terrier - just clean her up and trim around the eyes. The groomer's name is "Pam" - DO NOT leave your dog in her care! She butchered my two dogs!! She was completely clueless! One good thing about this store is that my husband went back and complained and they gave us a full refund. I was an idiot to tip the groomer but I was in shock when I picked them up and wasn't thinking clearly. My family has been coming to the petsmart for many many years, and the employees for the most part are all wonderful, however, I had my cats boarded at the Pets hotel for two weeks NEVER AGAIN. It took them over a week to find my cats toys, and they still haven't found everything I brought. They also handed me someone else's toys before I left, pretty sure they were dog toys. And on top of that both my cats have been sneezing for multiple days consistently from the moment I picked them up, and I KNOW they picked something up from the hotel, whether they gave my cats the wrong toys, or they didn't clean very well. Luckily I caught whatever virus my cats got early and antibiotics seem to be helping after a week. We have asked for some reimbursement and still waiting for answers. read more

It seems a lot of people have problems with the hotel or doggy day care but I have using the groomers there for my Terrier mix for a few years now and have always been happy with the service. The groomers always ask about her health (she is a senior dog) and if there is anything new that they need to know. My dog always seem happy and in good spirits when I pick her up. We've been going to this location to see Cornelius for over five years and he does an amazing job every time. We moved to Aldie two years ago and still drive 30 minutes to FairLakes even though there are plenty of groomers closer. Praying he will never leave! Update: My previous review still holds true for the staff that used to work at the pet hotel, but you can see from recent reviews that returning customers have been complaining. My grandmother and I have both brought our dogs here for years and she has stopped completely and I use it only as a last resort. There has been a complete turnover of their staff and the service is drastically worse than if was here the previous staff of obvious dog lovers. We used to be greeted by name and the staff would come out from behind the desk to pet my dog if we were just walking by to shop. I'm disabled and the staff used to be very generous about washing my dog down if she was stinky or dirty after playing. I could go back in and mention that she came out especially icky the last time and they would take care of it free of charge for having missed that she was drenched in slobber/walked in pee etc. They now charge us a considerable amount if we ask to have her rinsed down. I'm worried between what I've seen, what my grandmother has said, and what these reviews say if my dog is actually in good hands when I drop her off here. The customer service is also just... weird in a way it never used to be. They're slower to come to counter and often look unhappy to be at work. It used to be that the employees would smile and greet me or wave from inside the pet room while they radioed someone to come to the counter. Now they glare at me blankly as though the glass is one way and the people who might be sitting in the office will do the same instead of mentioning they're on break or saying anyone will be right up. I've given this place multiple chances by coming in even as I've become less pleased with the service but I think I'm done for the foreseeable future. I've been bringing my dog to this location for years. A couple of years ago, I took my dog to another groomer who hurt her (she needed 4 stitches), covered it up, lied about it and snuck out before I got there, leaving her with someone else. My dog was traumatized and afraid of people after that. I wanted to give her time to feel better and forget what happened so I tried to groom her myself, but a poodle is not easy to groom. When I brought her back to Petsmart Cayley is the first groomer who took care of her. I explained to her what happened and she understood and empathized. She took her time with Lily, was sweet and gentle with her and Lily did well. Today I brought her back for the second time and again, excellent results. Cayley didn't just do her job, she went above and beyond and my dog now trusts her. I can't thank her enough. She deserves more than my gratitude and business, she also deserves recognition. Disclaimer: This is not a review of the store as a whole, but puppy training with Carol C. I fully encourage you to look elsewhere for puppy training. Carol C. speaks to people with the most condescending tone, and seems to need to hear herself talk about how she's been teaching for 24 years, quite a bit. I was turned off on week one, when she loudly exclaimed in front of everyone, "Is there a reason that you have your dog's harness on wrong?" in a condescending tone. I responded by saying that it was most definitely not on wrong. It was a freedom harness and the tag was clearly in the front, where it should have been. Now, I admit that I was a little concerned that a trainer wouldn't know how a harness is supposed to be worn, but what was most concerning was the way that she appeared to be talking down to me. Skip ahead to week two, when my puppy barked and lunged towards another puppy in the class. I immediately pulled him away and said, "No." Yet again, Carol C. did not disappoint in her demeaning and condescending tone. She literally mocked the way that I said "no," and looked to the other people in the class and asked, "Now if someone said it like that, would you stop?" Umm, come again?! How about you give me a suggestion and speak to me directly and respectfully, to give me a helpful tip, not attempt to put me down and mock me. Anyway, I knew that my puppy had reacted out of fear and I was concerned that a group class might not be the best option for a fearful dog. I told Carol this and she responded with, "Well how else is he going to learn? I've been doing this for 24 years." I responded with, "I live with my dog and I know him." I was shocked that she didn't understand my concerns about a fearful dog turning reactive and possibly aggressive, if they are put in group situations that they are not ready for. THAT is not learning, especially when your dog is in a highly anxious state. What kind of a trainer doesn't understand that a rescue dog with trauma isn't going to fit a "one size fits all" approach. I left the class and to the assistant manager's credit, he refunded me and seemed to be understanding. However, I fully intend on calling back to speak with the General Manager, at a later date. It will be a cold day in hell before I ever bring an animal to this place for grooming again. I had my cat there once before a year prior for a Lion cut (he has insanely long hair extremely thick hair that causes some vicious hair balls, I feel so bad I occasionally get him shaved). Now to describe my cat and I'm really not exaggerating he's more like a dog. He loves to be touched, held, petted and overall treated like a baby doll. The first time he went everything was fine. I dropped him off early in the morning and picked him up that afternoon. I explained what I wanted to the girl, she did a great job and all of the groomers gushed over how beautiful and friendly and loving he was. It was a positive experience. So a year passes and I decide its time to take him for another hair cut. So I call up Petsmart in Fair Lakes for another appointment. A impatient woman answers the phone takes some information down and says its not problem to drop my cat off but he has to be in early in the morning. Like before, not a issue, we were spending that day moving and I figured, drop him off at 7 AM he'd be done in the afternoon, more then enough time for a quick bite to eat and move a few things into the new place so he won't freak out as much. Oh boy was I wrong. When I came in at 7 the girl at the grooming counter looked at me flustered. "We absolutely can not groom your cat." I just stared at her, my cat in one hand, his rabies paperwork as required in the other. "We don't groom cats." What? I calmly explained I called, made an appt. and verified it was for a cat. The woman then repeats, well we don't do cats now, but she'll make an exception this one time. Weirded out and almost not willing to leave him I chalk it up to a miscommunication and explain what I want, off we go. We stopped at a place for a quick bite to eat when my cell phone rings about 35 minutes later. The woman on the phone is literally screaming at me, "YOU NEED TO COME GET YOUR -FELINE- RIGHT NOW!" I'm now staring at the phone in abject horror that someone is calling me and screaming at me immediately. I'm worried now that something has happened. So I try to politely ask whats wrong. "We do not service -felines- in our grooming facilities. You are to come get him immediately or we will be turning him over to animal control." "WHAT?! How dare you, we had an agreed upon business transaction. Why are you threatening me?" "I'm the store general manager and I'll do as I please. Come get you cat immediately." Click she hangs up. Staring at my phone mortified then at my barely touched breakfast I glance at my other half, grab the car keys and bolt out the door. I arrive at the store to find the first woman from the grooming area I'd talk to looking like she'd been crying and holding my cats carrier and a piece of paper. I give her an apologetic look then take my cat and proceed to leave after ensuring he's not harm. I was concerned because it looked like someone had started to bath him and never finished he had what felt like soap in his hair that was wet and matting in areas now. (this was also in JANUARY and quite cold outside) As I approach the doors a angry woman steps in front of me and tells me I need to see the cashier and thrusts a piece of paper at me. The paper was a bill for $80 for "washing" my cat. I tell her to screw off I'm leaving. She demands I pay for the washing. Now at this point I'm getting pretty hot, I've got a day of moving ahead of me, I now need to wash my poor probably terrified cat myself, and I'm being extorted for money. So the first time in this whole ordeal I've raised my voice I tell her, I'm not paying, and if she doesn't let me leave I'm calling the police to report she's unlawfully detaining me and then I'm pressing charges for animal abuse for leaving my cat covered in soap that could harm him. Taken aback she steps out of the way and I leave. I never got her name, I don't really care. But I HIGHLY recommend against their grooming services and I avoid this petsmart at all costs. read more

I'm writing this review purely on the grooming services. I preface this review with: I don't have a dog nor do I have my cat groomed at this location. This is an bservation based on THREE separate visits. The grooming center has glass windows where the customer can observe what great service they provide. So was the theory. There is a girl that does the grooming, usually with a side ponytail and is absolutely violent with the dogs! They (the dogs) are muzzled but are able to move their limbs but are usually in a standing position. Side Pony Tail girl was rough on all occasions - the dogs wincing in pain, attempting to shirk away from this monster, and attempted to bite her in their defense. They're muzzled and biting is a defense mechanism, so let's not feel too bad for her. I would never bring my pet here after watching her! read more

If you haven't noticed, I have a dog. And she would love to go anywhere I'm willing to take her. So it's sweet that Petsmart let's you bring your dogs into the store! This huge pet store has just about everything I've needed for my dog and more. (You won't find me putting any sweaters or outfits on my dog!) They even have training classes. Josie and I are about to finish the beginner class with Trainer Carol (who is really good by the way). The classes are professional and well organized. Some times the room can be crowded but mostly it's ok. They offer grooming and boarding too. I give Petsmart 5 stars! ...Having retrieved my dog from the PetHotel I am very happy with the outcome. The typical rooms are a pretty good size for a small dog and have a drain in the back in case of accidents. Additional services are available in addition to the two potty walks and meals for an additional charge. If your dog is active or needs to go more than twice a day I'd suggest an extra walk. Josie came home happy and free of germs. Remember to book early at the holidays. They fill up months in advance some times! read more

I would give them zero stars if I could. I brought my family dog in to Petsmart for a grooming appointment at 9:30 AM, and was told I would receive a call when he was ready to be picked up. I waited around until 3:30-4, at which time I reached out to other family members whose numbers' were also on file for our dog to see if PetSmart had called or, ideally, our dog had been picked up. When I learned that they hadn't heard anything either, I called PetSmart to ask if my dog was ready. I was put on hold after an, "Umm.. I'm not sure - let me check." I was a little concerned, but relieved when they said he was indeed ready. When I went to pick up my dog in rush hour traffic around 5:45, I asked what time he had finished his appointment and, subsequently, had been left in a cage in the back of the shop. I was met with uncertainty and a lot of back-and-forth between the employees about whether or not he was finished when their shifts started. One employee stated that her shift started at 2:00, and that he had been in a cage by then, meaning he had been in a cage for at LEAST 4 hours. I asked them if they had walked him since the last time he went to the bathroom was before his appointment began at 9:30 in the morning. The woman told me they weren't allowed to since it was against policy to walk the dogs. When they finally brought my dog out, he was drenched from his stomach to his hind legs. One of the employees told me he might've "stepped in his water bowl." Unless PetSmart provides pee-temperature water for all their dogs, my dog 100% PEED ON HIMSELF. I even heard some employees spraying/cleaning out his cage in the back. They offered to wash him off and blow dry him (wow, THANKS!) and gave me 50% off my final total. TL;DR: took dog in for a grooming appointment, never called to pick up, dog peed himself, will never return to PetSmart read more

$33 to board Tuck overnight. He came back a bit smelly but happy. I made sure to give him a prompt bath as soon as we got home. Front desk people were nice. So disappointed in the Pethotel in Fair Lakes they refused to allow my pup that "looked like a pitbull" to go to daycare during his stay. My veterinarians paperwork says my dog is a bulldog mix. He attends a local daycare every day of the week! Their "policy" is no pitbulls or any dog that looks like one for daycare. It awful that Petsmart discriminates like that! They never mentioned anything when I called to make my reservation. They need to get with the times and do a disposition test on all the dogs to determine their appropriateness for daycare! There are lots of other dog breeds who are aggressive and don't play well with others! My pup is not one of them and would have been the ideal playmate for any dog there! He walked me through his train of thought and gave me specific reasoning as to why certain dog food brands were better than others. Finally, when we saw a food type and size that I liked (price point AND quality wise), the item was out of stock. He checked the back to no avail. So what does he do? Worst Service ever had ...!!!! My dog was sick and was throwing up. Not eating and drinking the way she was.... (Not feeling a critical condition,) so we go and make an appointment with Petsmart @ FAIR LAKS LOCATION. The pet hospital tells us that the appointments were booked for next three days... Receptionist tells us to walk in May be better at 8 AM Saturday's (which are always guaranteed), first come first served... So we take our dog in early Saturday morning @ 8:00 AM to be exact... (to be sure not to be late ) and ... Ends up sitting at the waiting area for two hours .... Why?? 1) some lady walks in after us ( the front desk lady feels like servicing her first) so she gets the service first.... The explain "Oh I am sorry... We didn't know you came in first," ... Seriously..., 2) " Oh I know this dog" so the front desk lady says, and gives her the service again... We ended up siting there for two hours witnessing three or more people and dogs going in for service before us ( all walk ins )... Just because the front desk lady feels like it ... And she tells us "make an appointment... It will be better for you." So we go and take the next appointment, which was the next four days after. The day of our appointment (my dog is still feeling sick,) we arrive 30 minutes of prior. And again, receptionist lady tells us that we need to wait a little longer because the walk-in needs to be service first.. What is the point of making an APPOINTMENT or WALKIN ?? WHAT IS THE POINT!!! OMG !! NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER had this type of treatment before.... This has been soooo BAD SO... The bottom line is ... They need to hire better servicing people... They DONT'T CARE what so ever... The doctors are so nice and friendly but...seriously...the front desk needs trainings on how to fairly and accurately service customers.. Especially with appointments... read more

I have a cat, a gecko and used to have a hamster. Petsmart is the place i go when i'm in the area and desperately need something. i seriously hate this place. I paid 3.50 for mealworms and i only got 10 that were alive. Which means i have to go back to a store this weekend because that wont even last a week. Half of them were dead--- which you can't really tell before you buy them since they are all hiding. Out of the three hamsters i've owned (i'm a teacher, so they make great class pets) the one from petsmart lasted the least amount of time. He was never really healthy at all. Almost every time I've tried to purchase from them, the hamster i've picked out had "wet butt" (which is a gastrointestinal disease that spreads rapidly and kills the hamsters- never buy one thats in the same cage as a hamster who has it). Its very frustrating I also think its overpriced on everything. PetCo is at least 10% cheaper on everything! So maybe its not as bright and sniney as Petsmart, but i'd rather get my mealworms there any day! It sounds like the classes are great as is the pet hotel. But as a store for non-dog owners (it is called petsmart, not dogsmart) I'd rather go somewhere else! read more

Groomers did a horrendous job I brought my dog in for a bath and brush and told them to cut around her eyes not only did they charge me an extra fifteen dollars to make it an express job (without my knowledge) but when I came back and noticed how she looked the exact same as when I had left and asked that they cut around her eyes...as she literally couldn't see. He was deliberating what should he do that would be the best. 5 stars for him. He called the manager over to make sure that was okay. The manager came and they were talking. I can see that he didn't want to deal with it. He seemed to get flustered and stated, "just start over because you will mess it up". REALLY?! That's how you treat your employees?!?? Wow. I first took my puppy here when he was about 7 weeks old to get his nails grinded (they were very sharp). The groomer takes him, secures him and cuts his nails. On one nail she cut to close and he began to bleed, she stops the bleeding then AFTER she cuts his nails she asked how old he was when I told her 7 weeks that's when all hell broke loose.... he's too young he shouldn't be here. She went as far as stating he should still be with his mother. At this point all I ask was for my receipt to get the hell out of there. There were no other customers there so I didn't feel the need to voice my opinion on her comments. She doesn't know his circumstance; she doesn't know anything about how I got him or why or what/if something happened to his mother so moving on. I go out to the store buy a bigger water bowl for him then go to pay. An employee at the front of the store was kind enough to hold my pup while I paid so I wouldn't juggle him with my purse/wallet. The lady from the groomer came out and in front of everyone in line behind me suggested I get him some substitute milk seeing how he was not with his mother and was 7 weeks old and probably wasn't getting the nutrition he needs. At this point I told her that she needs to mind her own business, just because you work at a pet store does not make you an expert on all things dog. I told her she doesn't know any history on my dog so for her to speak was poor judgment. I have yet to go back to the grooming shop at PetSmart since that happened. Today was my final straw with PetSmart. I wanted to have both my pups in doggie day camp all day Saturday so that while I am in Baltimore my pups aren't home alone all day with no breaks. I called them gave them the information on my pups asked them if they needed Tiberius' information since he is now 6 months and hasn't been there yet. They said they could call my vet no problem and asked for the vet's number. Apparently the vet gave them the information on both dogs but didn't give them the year of the bordetella for Shiba my eldest pup. I called the vet and they said that they could fax the records to avoid confusion. I called back the PetHotel to inform them that Shiba was up to date there must have been a miscommunication and request their fax number to send the records over. I couldn't hear the fax number clearly so I asked her twice to repeat the number, I could tell she was annoyed. On the second request I'll be nice and say I got "disconnected." Since this happened I have made other arrangements for Shiba and Tiberius and now refuse to support any PetSmart store. read more

Do not use their grooming service! We took our beautiful golden for a bath and they chopped her and created holes in her undercoat and we specifically told them to not touch her tail and they chopped it way too short. We asked them to trim her behind and they didn't even touch it. She was there for 5 hours. Came home so thirsty and exhausted. They charged us double what we normally pay. I did get a refund and an apology but now we have to wait and hope the holes and uneven trim grow. They need to train their groomers effectively so that this doesn't happen again. I would rather hike her back to her normal groomer "canine classics"in fairfax station than to ever put her through this torture again. At least they employee caring professionals. This Petsmart is one of the nicer one's I've visited in the Northern Virginia area. It was my first visit to this store and I was actually surprised at how large this location is. It's pretty standard as far as Petsmarts go, but the wide selection of items was something I appreciated about this location. The store was clean, well stocked and organized much better than some of the other locations I have visited. I had limited interaction with the staff so I can't offer much on this aspect of things. My sister visits here regularly and she tells me that they're always pleasant and helpful. Petsmart has a good email and mailing it's program so make sure you sign up to save $$$. My visit here was a good one and I would recommend this store to anyone that has pet needs. *This business is gun carry friendly. read more

For the Grooming, I give it a 5/5. My dog has been seeing Cornelius for over two years, and I always get compliments on how great he looks. I don't even have to say much anymore cause Cornelius remembers. I wish I could separate the different departments within Petsmart cause the Grooming department is amazing. For the first time, I used the Pet Hotel to leave my dog for a week while we were out of the country. My dog was from a rescue and he was abused, so he has a lot of anxiety. This is why I was worried about him. During my trip, my cousin had her dog in a doggie day camp and then the pet hotel for the weekend cause of her wedding. They sent her videos and pictures the entire time. Petsmart didn't attempt to communicate with me the entire time my dog was in there. My husband, who dropped my dog off, told me they had an Instagram. I messaged them on Instagram to please send me a picture or video of Li. What did they do instead? They started posting pictures of every dog but mine. I had my husband, who was in work travel in the States, call to see how my dog was doing. They said he was ok, and they would send me videos and pictures. When I went to pick him up, they didn't even tell me how he did or anything. I asked how he did, and I was ignored and told "You're all set." If a small business can create a group for all the dog owners and send pictures and videos of their dogs, I am confused how PetSmart can't. read more

This review is about the Petsmart in Fair Lakes only. I have a very small senior dog. Since moving here in February, I have taken her to this groomer to have her nails ground down ~6 times because it is the most conveniently located. I will not be taking her there again. Every other time I've gone, they have done a fair but not good job grinding her nails -- they leave them too long and just rush through, often forgetting her dewclaws altogether. I've been ok with this because it's good enough to keep her comfortable as long as I do a little touchup at home. When we went there last month, the groomer did 2 of my dog's feet, then made me stand there and \hold my 20lb dog in the air while she cried and wiggled so that she could get a "better angle" on her remaining 2 feet, despite the fact that my senior dog has a bad back and this caused her some pain for the next few days. She forgot the dewclaws, and barely touched her front right paw. I still tipped her $3 because I figured that at least she tried, and maybe she was just having an off day. Today I took her to get her nails ground again and got a different groomer. I handed her over to the groomer, got the bill, walked to the front of the store to pay, and came right back. I was gone for 4 minutes max -- that's a generous estimate tbh. When I got back, the groomer promptly handed me my dog back and told me that she had done the back 2 paws and one front paw, but that she was wiggling too much and crying too much for her to get her other front paw. Dogs wiggle when their nails are ground down, and nervous dogs cry; groomers should be able to calm and control a small, non-aggressive dog. I've never had a problem with this dog having her nail ground down before coming here. I had a migraine and didn't want to have a conversation in a room full of barking and crying dogs, so I just left. I was willing to pay full price for 3/4 the job, though I didn't leave a tip for once. When I got home and properly looked at my dogs nails, I saw that those 3 paws the groomer had supposedly finished had barely been touched. Her nails are still too long on all 4 paws. Which makes sense -- of course the groomer didn't get even one paw done in the 4 minutes I was gone, let alone 3 feet plus a solid effort on the fourth. But this means that I payed full price for basically nothing -- no results, and no effort. I'm going to have to take my dog to another groomer this week and pay them full price to do what this store is apparently incapable of doing. I'm a patient person. I never leave negative reviews, I never complain to staff, and I just take what I'm given and make it work. I've been the employee getting bashed by some obnoxious customer, and I don't want to turn around and be the obnoxious customer. This is the one exception, because I'm so sick of this. I've had 4 different groomers at this Petsmart. None have been good, but have made an effort so it was fine. This groomer was willfully bad at her job, has screwed up my careful budget for the month -- because I only budget for one groomers visit -- and has made me genuinely upset with a service provider for literally the first time in my life. I'm very upset, my head hurts very badly, and I'm going to have to take $20 out of my grocery budget for this month. If I could leave negative stars, I would. read more

Took my sick cat here as a walk in today. It took a long time to get seen but the price wasn't too bad considering it was a Sunday and other vet offices I called wanted $150 just for showing up. read more
