We have had an overall great experience with the dog den. We've been taking our dog there for about…read morea year and a half now. He's a large (~80 lbs) coonhound who is fine around other dogs, but has some anxiety challenges with people. He's also real loud and tends to make lots of noise when he's left alone. He's boarded there a bunch of times, once for over a week. We always include the day care option for him, which is an extra cost but worth it for him to have the outdoor time (they have a fenced area that I believe they use specifically for day care) and socialization with other dogs. This is the only place we've boarded him, but we tried some other day care options in town and have been happiest with the Dog Den. The staff there knows what they're doing with our dog, and it's helped us to feel confident leaving him there. He started off feeling very nervous during drop-off, but now is excited to go and knows exactly what to do. I've seen some negative reviews about experience with staff there. The guy in charge is direct, which sometimes comes off as gruff. I get the impression he likes dogs more than people, and frankly I'm totally fine with that because he knows his stuff around dogs. I've seen him directly correct some staff behavior that made my dog uncomfortable (see anxiety mentioned above), simply by quickly observing his body language and understanding his specific needs. Other places have failed in this where the Dog Den succeeded. That's not to say the other staff there performs poorly, I've always been extremely happy with everyone there (he LOVES Carly- she's amazing and I hereby advocate for her raise). Just that my dog, like many dogs, has some specific needs. We'll continue to recommend the dog den for both day care and boarding, even though it's sort of out of the way for us. In my experience, their staff has shown to be very competent and professional with the animals in their care.

My experience at this facility in Monticello was very disappointing…read more During the initial consultation, the staff member I spoke with dominated the conversation and seemed uninterested in hearing important details about my dog's needs. Before even examining him, she immediately focused on what she described as matted fur on his ear and tail (which was actually very minor) and suggested she might not be able to groom him properly because of it, making a much bigger deal of it than necessary. She kept speaking over me and was ready and willing to argue after I said "were just here to drop our doggie off for grooming, not to hear your personal assessment". She went as far as giving us further unsolicited advice afterwards regarding a 'possible abscessed tooth' based on a puffy spot under his chin. He is 15 years old and most of his teeth are bad and he has several fatty spots, thanks for giving us your opinion, however, we know our dog very well. When I tried to inform her about his numerous moles (crucial for safe grooming), she dismissed my concerns and only acknowledged the one visible on his head. This lack of attention and unwillingness to listen felt controlling and unprofessional. Then she felt it was necessary to explain herself which is when I walked out and allowed them a chance to prove themselves. When my girlfriend picked our senior dog up by herself, this person felt it was necessary to apologize to my girlfriend for rubbing me wrong or something to that effect. Ultimately, the grooming service itself was subpar. The haircut was very poor - definitely the worst cut he's ever received. To make matters worse, she called and convinced us to allow her to trim the fur on his tail, citing that 'it didn't look right' to her. My girlfriend agreed, only to discover later that she had removed nearly all the hair from his tail - including the long spritzy fur on the end that no groomer has ever considered removing over the past 15 years, and other sections that weren't even matted. Additionally, he did not receive a bath afterwards, nor were we given any printout or documentation summarizing the services performed. We expected a haircut, nail trim, and anal gland cleaning. I can see that the haircut and nail trim happened. Blind faith regarding the anal gland cleaning though. While this was the second worst overall grooming experience my dog has had in this town, it was certainly the worst haircut. This person has control issues or is extremely biased to a point of being unprofessional. This is the point that I begin do all of this myself from now on, out of necessity.

I've also worked at a boarding/daycare grooming facility that takes great care of their dogs. So I know what a well cared for facility and dog look like. Pet Palace is beyond filthy. It's old and deteriorating. Dogs don't get let out, or walked. No one is ever there to take care of the dogs. They leave them there in the cages with only just enough food and water to fill the bowls. Leaves the dogs to roll around in their own feces and urine in a cage. Not cared for, no human interaction, no other dog engagement or play. And this can cause destructive behaviors. You'd be better off leaving your dog in a familiar area at your home than at Pet Palace.

I imagine they are working a shoestring budget but they nonetheless take wonderful care of the animals who unfortunately find themselves here. They have a rather involved screening process to make sure that the animals they adopt out really do find their proverbial "forever homes." When we adopted, there was a brief waiting period to avoid any impulsive adoptions, as well as a requirement that we bring in our other dog to meet our adoptee to make sure they got along. All of the staff were very friendly and you could tell from the way they interacted with the animals that they really care about all of the animals. Personally, I don't think I could do such heartbreaking work and maintain the kind, gracious, and dedicated demeanor that I have observed in the workers here.
