I have shopped at Pet Supplies Plus for decades. Not a super fancy store, but their selection of products is stellar, and their prices are competitive to the bigger chain and feed stores in town. The folks that work there are always helpful, not over the top friendly, but they care enough to stop what they are doing to show you to products they think you might be interested in. What's more, they are visible and on the floor, and you don't have to chase them down or beg for assistance, as one might have to do at other retailers. Another plus is their ample parking and location away from the busy north end of town. They are also right next to a local grocery store, so stopping in to get our specialty dog food can be done at the same time as our weekly grocery shopping. It is a wonderful little gem in our community. The only reason I hesitate on giving them five stars is due to the cleanliness of the store, which is something they could fix with paying more attention to sweeping and vacuuming the aisles and entryways. read more

The grooming here was wonderful, especially with Kelly. She was so patient and kind to my dog and also detailed with every part of the grooming. My dog initially did not like grooming at all, but after going here she seems so much calmer with the grooming process. The pricing is also very much reasonable, way cheaper than Petsmart. read more

DO NOT take your pet to Petsuppliesplus in Champaign for grooming. My parents took our family dog there, and it was terrible. She came home with a bald spot on her shoulder. When I saw her after work, it was still red and sore from where her fur was pulled out. The person grooming didn't even bother to call my dad when he was done. After 3 hours, my dad went back and our dog was locked in a crate waiting to be picked up. This person should not be grooming animals. Beyond unacceptable! read more

I love this pet store! It is the only store in town that I'm aware of that carries a specific cat food recipe (Wellness 95). They have a huge selection of cat food, both wet and dry, a decent selection of rabbit food and supplies, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. I like the PSP online shopping convenience -- I buy online, then drive by the store later to pick up my purchase curbside. Their website clearly identifies which PSP store I'm shopping at so there's no confusion. Orders are filled within a few hours which works well with my schedule. And OMG, I'm saving time _and_ money by ordering just the necessities online. Because when I shop inside the store, I am inexplicably drawn to the dog toy aisle and am compelled to feel and squeak every single toy, which always takes a while, plus I often buy an unnecessary toy on impulse. And the dog treat aisle, whoa! There are so many choices, I tend to start reading each package and eventually buy more varieties of treats than necessary. I guess I'm thinking we'll do a taste test at home to see which treat the dog prefers? Although deep down I already know that the dog doesn't care and will eat any treat, any time. I purchased a Kong toy which was supposedly indestructible for my 9 month old puppy. Within two minutes of him chewing it, the toy began breaking into tiny pieces. Upon my attempt to return this toy, I was told that because they can't resell it, they can't accept it as a return. I understand they don't manufacture the toy but if you can't stand behind something you sell, you shouldn't be selling it. I would have been happy with a store credit but was told there is "nothing they can do". I would expect more from a store that I frequent but they will no longer be receiving my business. I was very happy when Pet Supplies Plus opened up in Champaign. I had shopped at a Pet Supplies Plus in northwest Indiana, and I was very impressed with their selection of high-quality cat food. There are a few good places to purchase pet food in C-U, but very few of them have a comprehensive selection of "the fancy stuff," and I do not have the time or the patience to go to three different stores to buy cat food for my picky-ass felines. The Pet Supplies Plus in Champaign is smaller than the one in Dyer, but they carry most of the same products, including several lines of cat food that were previously unavailable (as far as I could tell) in the Champaign area. They carry the Merrick's dry cat food (but not the moist, although I think they had it when they first opened), Innova, Instinct, and this kibble called Taste of the Wild that makes my cats completely insane. The selection of toys and litter is decent enough. In addition to the fancy-pants brands of cat food, they also carry the usual brands (Friskies, Meow Mix, 9 Lives, Fancy Feast, etc.). Prices on these products are on par with the other stores in town, and a little cheaper at times. Pet Supplies Plus also seems to be partnering with Catsnap, a local cat rescue, to raise money, collect supplies, and encourage pet adoption. Catsnap shows cats and kittens at the store on Saturdays, and there's a collection bin for cat supplies. read more

This is the best pet store in town as far as what I have experienced in Champaign. The staff are nice, especially the manager, Michael. They truly care about you and your pet, and will give you the best options they have available at the most reasonable price. PSP is my favorite place to shop for my pets! They always have what I need, and everything is reasonably priced. The staff is always friendly and very helpful. I prefer shopping here over Petsmart because they care about their animals more than the money they bring in. I have never questioned their care or treatment with the pets that they have for sale. I am hoping to bring a pet home from the CUHumane Society in a few days. The staff at Pet Supplies Plus was very helpful. I know very little about Crate Training and we got some very good information and suggestions. I saw a dog on a leash with his owner so if something doesn't work or fit I feel like I can bring my new friend in to see what size crate/kennel will work best. We picked one up and plan to return it if it doesn't work out. Keeping our fingers crossed that we get to bring our little buddy home. read more

Very helpful and had just what I needed. I was looking for a double harness for mobility assistance for my large dog. I live 45 minutes away and called to find out if they had anything. The person who helped me found a product and provided the measurements to ensure it would work and then stored it at the counter for me to pick up. Really like the staff & products at this store. Used the dog grooming services (bath time!) and was quite pleased.

Grooming was terrible. My dog's fur changed after she went there from smooth, dark and wavy to faded, coarse, and springy. When confronted, the groomer was very rude and yelled at me for not properly training my dog, not sure what I did wrong but the vet told me that the groomer mishandled shampooing and damaged her fur. Her eye was also red from soap getting in her eye, also something I asked him about and he lied saying "She was like that when she came in", well she wasn't. I learned later that they have continued mistreating dogs in the grooming and have heard far worse stories than my own. The store is fine, not the biggest, prices are about the same when you have membership at both. But the grooming was terrible and it is not worth the few bucks you would save, now take my dog to a professional grooming location and they never have issues with her, her fur is starting to get better (after a year and a half), and she never comes home with red eyes. I am a business person myself, and this business has terrible customer service that attacks the client and never answers for their actions. read more

DO NOT HAVE YOUR PET GROOMED BY DONNELL!! On 02/21/17 my puppy almost died due to injuries received during grooming. My five pound, five month old Shih Tzu puppy was groomed at Pet Supplies Plus located at 2841 W. Kirby Ave, Champaign IL 61821 by Donnell. My puppy came home and went into respiratory distress. I took urgent action and took him to a vet where he was diagnosis of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema (fluid around his lungs) which was most likely the result of efforts the groomer took to restrain him. My puppy did not have any symptoms, or have any injuries prior to being taken to Pet Supplies Plus for grooming. I have been attempting to handle this professionally under the assumption this event was accidental. I forwarded a statement along with medical records and bills to the store manager. I simply wanted the veterinary bills paid. I have been continuously ignored regarding this matter despite follow up. Today, 03/13/17 I was finally contacted by the store manager to meet with him and Donnell. I assumed this would be in interview of what happened, perhaps an apology, and a verdict on if the bills would be considered for payment. This is not at all what I experienced. I sat down with The Manager (Michael), Donnell, and my boyfriend. I was asked to tell my side of the story. I simply stated that my puppy was fine when I brought him in for grooming, and he ended up spending the night on oxygen. I explained his diagnosis, stated that I believed the event to be accidental and should be seen as a learning experience and training opportunity, and requested the vet bills be paid so we can all put it behind us. The reaction was overwhelming and indescribable. Donnell basically blamed my puppy (who is five pounds) for resisting. He stated that my puppy was crying and fighting before even being put on the grooming table. I suggested that should have been a sign that my puppy should not have been groomed. I reminded him that at no point was I contacted in regards to the experience nor was it ever suggested the grooming be discontinued. I advised Donnell and the manager that my puppy was injured under their care. At this point things escalated and Donnell began aggressively yelling at me. The manager sat and did nothing. Absolutely nothing. He did not say a word. After the fact, I was advised that Donnell was not his employee. Regardless of the situation, I am the customer. I was yelled at by someone who provided a service at Pet Supplies Plus. This is unacceptable. It is unacceptable for a full size grown man whose profession is to groom dogs, to say a five pound puppy is at fault for resisting. His aggression towards me, leads me to believe that he did harm my puppy by forcibly making him cooperate for grooming. In regards to the grooming experience on 02/21/17: When my puppy was picked up, it was reported that my puppy had begun to scream and cry before even being put on the grooming table. Donnell reported that he had cried and resisted during the entire grooming process. This was described by Donnell as twisting and turning, flopping around, and peeing and pooping. Apparently, he made so much noise that Donnell notified his manager to make it known he was not hurting my puppy. At no point was I contacted regarding any problems during grooming, or the possibility that they should not/could not groom my puppy due to his anxious behavior. After returning from his appointment, my puppy appeared stressed. He spent the afternoon drooling and wanting to be held. He would not eat, drink, play, or socialize. He just wanted to be held and comforted. There was not yet concern at this point as it was assumed that Tesla was just exhausted and upset over the grooming experience. Over the next few hours, he did not improve his behavior, and it was noticed that my puppy appeared to have difficulty breathing. You could visible see and hear him struggle to breathe. We watched him for approximately 30 minutes and he continued to be lethargic, and disinterested in treats or activity. His breathing was becoming louder and he began to whimper as he struggled to breath. I contacted our veterinary clinic and was advised to present right away. They took my puppy immediately, and determined through X-Ray that he had fluid around his lungs which was making it difficult for him to breathe. The vet advised me this condition is common in puppies who experience an injury or trauma, and that this condition could lead to death. The vet immediately began treatment for him through medication and oxygen. When he did not improve as quickly as they wanted, we were referred to an emergency veterinary clinic. The emergency clinic agreed with our vet's assessment of my puppy. He was kept overnight in an oxygen cage with continuous monitoring and treatment. read more

I posted a very negative review of this business recently, regarding an experience I had in their store with a third-party business who was offering pictures of your pet with Santa for Xmas. I owe all parties concerned a very huge apology-I believed I had been ripped off and disappointed in the situation, and it turned out that neither was actually the case-there were some issues that led to an untoward and unforeseen delay, and when nobody was able to provide anything but an email address-no phone, no physical address-and I'm talking to several other people, all of whom had the identical experience I did-I can't say it was unreasonable to come to the conclusions that I did, but it turned out, not only was I flat wrong, these very nice people were extremely patient and kind in trying to help sort this out, when they didn't have to be because there was nothing really in it for them to help me. About the third party-they are a brand-new rescue, which is a cause SO close to my heart, as I do a heck of a lot of rescuing myself and support anyone's efforts to help animals. I would actually like to address the situation with the third party, and I don't have any other place to do it-one thing that jumped out at me instantly was how VERY gentle, kind, and good they were on handling four shy little rescue dogs with different temperaments. I would actually say - I told everyone I talked to at the time and actually talked others into taking their pets there-how very impressed I was by their insight, kindness, and sensitivity. As an animal person, I could tell they were genuine in the way they handled my little dogs, and they got the best shots I've ever had taken because they are just good at handling animals, their love and care showed. That was part of what completely blew my mind in the situation-I knew they couldn't have faked that-and yet, I had no contact info, got no apparent response to my email inquiries, and I really didn't know what else it could have been but a soft con. I'm sincerely glad that I was completely wrong, and I not only wish them all the best, I will be sending them a donation in excess of the $10 I provided for the pictures, which I did finally get after they corrected whatever malfunction that had led to the delay. I am SO sorry, and, again, I've never been so glad to be so wrong-and when I'm wrong, I own that. read more

This pet store is really great and definitely the best pet store in champaign Urbana. Members of the staff are always friendly and happy to help. Other pet stores, Sailfin in particular, have such grouchy staff members that don't seem to want to help and are sometimes very inexperienced. I find that they will say just about anything to make a sale. Anyway, back to PSP. Although the name implies that they sell pet supplies, they do also sell a variety of pets, however the types of pets are not always constant, like sometimes they will have chinchillas, sometimes not. Sometimes they'll have really exotic pets, like African greys or macaws. But they do have many animals they sell consistently, like hamsters, parakeets, all kinds of fish (both salt and freshwater, but if youre looking for fish, you may want to go to Sailfin for a wider selection but for higher price), cats, ferrets, bunnies, conures, snakes, lizards, amphibians, and more that i just cant think of right now. I sometimes bring my 4 year old nephew in to just see the animals and they are happy to bring them out for him to pet. The staff here are very knowledgable regarding the animals they sell. I bought two baby bunnies from them and they talked to me about their experiences with pet rabbits. I learned quite a bit of information from them that you cannot find online. Since I knew they had grooming services (i always see dogs getting groomed there) I asked one of them if they provided nail clipping services for bunnies. She said no, but if I brought them in while she was working, she'd be fine with clipping them for me. Although she does it all the time with her own bunnies's nails, I'm a bit shy accepting favors in general. But I'm just saying, that is so nice that she offered. The man who helped me when I was buying the two bunnies was really very helpful. He breeds rabbits and he gave me a lot of insight on raising them and what brands are safest and healthiest. He told me which vet he goes to whenever he gets his bunnies spayed or neutered (animal hospital at the crossing). They never seem like they are trying to get you to spend more. They actually always find little loopholes that allow you to save more money and spend less. I really recommend becoming a member if you wanna save. It's free so you have nothing to lose. Anyway, 5 stars! Keep it up guys! Oh, and the place is really clean. I just thought I should add that cause animal maintenance there must be very high there to keep the cages so clean, which also keeps the animals healthy and in good shape when sold to their owners. read more
