Very disappointed in our visit here yesterday. My daughter and I asked to see a puppy (English bulldog) and we were told we'd have to wait. No others in line in front of us, and plenty of open cubicles for playtime. So we waited 20 minutes, and asked again, and were told to wait again. Meantime, another couple asked and received playtime with golden retriever puppy. So we continued to wait. Staff continued to walk around the store and talk to each other and ignore us. Finally, we just left. A real, real pity, as pups sure looked like they could use a little interaction. Staff's poor customer service was astonishing. read more

THE WORST PET STORE EVER We visited the Petland in Hoffman Estates on April 30, 2018. The store was very crowded by people because the environment of pet store was very encouraging for everyone to touch the many kinds of animal. Just like everyone else, my son was waiting in a line to touch tiny hamsters. He was very excited to touch the hamsters because there were NO WARNING SIGNS such as 'WE BITE'. As soon as he touched one of tiny hamsters when it was his turn, one of tiny hamsters bit his index finger so badly. He bleed so badly on his fingers. We took my son to one of the employees to show his finger. Even though she heard and saw what was happening to my son, she didn't say sorry to us. She carelessly pointed a facet for us to wash my son's finger with water and gave only one small bandage to the finger of the blood, which flowed continuously and did not give us further directions. We all were disappointed by her customer service. Absolutely, she did not take care of the customer in need. My son's finger, which was bitten by the hamster, swelled so badly that night and we had to take him to the emergency room. Even though we provided Petland headquarter with the medical bills, they neither apologized nor responded to our email. We called them 3 times but they just told us to wait. We have bills to pay but they don't care at all. This is absolutely the worst pet store. DO NOT TOUCH PETS in PETLAND BECAUSE THEY WON'T DO ANYTHING IF YOU GET HURT. read more

as i walked into petland to pick out some toys for my dog i immediately realized the employees are incompetent. there were hamster being used to play catch, and ferrets being held upside down and more. the employees were not regulating their customers whatsoever. i asked where the dog toys were and was told "find them yourself". i am disgusted by the customer service. the employees weren't handling the animals much better either, picking up the bunnies by simply grabbing them instead of holding them. not once did an employee ask me if i needed help finding anything. employees were all just staring at their phones and not being helpful whatsoever. when i got to the register, the lady was staring at her phone while checking me out, which meant i had to repeat myself a number of times. this is the worst customer service i've ever experienced. on top of that, they get their puppies from disgusting puppy mills. gross. i will not be coming back to this petland. stop selling traumatized animals. read more

DO NOT BUY A PUPPY OR ANY ANIMAL FROM HERE!!!! PLEASE READ: Aside from all the puppies being derived from a conspicuous puppy mill in Milwaukee and being outrageously overpriced, THEY DO NOT FEED THE PUPPIES. Before bringing out the puppies to play, they are fed a literal "lick" of a sugar paste causing the puppies to appear playful and alive, when in reality they are on a temporary "sugar high". This paste called "Nutri-cal" is made of high fructose corn syrup and contains 338 nutrient-less calories per teaspoon. These are infant puppies that are 6-9 weeks of age, not fully developed, and should be fed about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of nutritious high protein puppy kibble 3-4 times a day (having supposed to been weaned off soft foods/milk by 6 weeks of age). This is like a human baby being fed occasional teaspoons of regular soda or candy instead of baby food 3-4 times a day during their most vulnerable months of development. The puppies are put on sale once the signs of emaciation (food deprivation, starvation) begin to show as the puppies appear sluggish/sleepy and thin and possibly sick with kennel cough, diarrhea... etc. Stool eating is commonly known of Petland puppies as they resort to eating their feces in desperate hunger, thus spreading intestinal parasites and other illnesses. Petland's associates are told to claim they feed the puppies "puppy kibble" twice daily, yet will strongly push a customer to purchase the "Puppy Booster" paste since the puppies "might be finicky eaters because of the stress of coming home" and that "Petland will not cover any illness or anything else [death] due to hypoglycemia" - which means "low blood sugar" "Hypoglycemia" does not occur in healthy puppies. They use this term to convince customers since most do not understand the medical term for low blood sugar that occurs to diabetics and individuals with certain medical conditions. The truth is that the puppies will not eat the kibble they convince customers to buy since they are only used to being fed sugar paste, and will become ill (if not already sick) because of their poor health and lacking immune systems due to malnutrition/starvation. Petland's return policy is 50% of their usual average puppy price of $1200 if returned within 48 hrs. and ONLY if you take the puppy to a "free visit" with a veterinarian they refer you to within 4 days. These so-called certified animal doctors have already arranged with Petland and are taught how to "cover" the signs of the unhealthy conditions there. If the puppy presents with an illness, they treat it long enough to last the 14 day warranty agreement with Petland. These facts are backed by the accounts of previous Petland employees and with evidence from first-hand experience with recently purchasing a puppy at this location. The puppy scale at Barrington Square Animal Hospital (the veterinarian referred by Petland) was even weighted incorrectly to hide the actual weight of the underweight, sick, malnourished puppy who at 10 weeks of age should have been weighing 8 lbs. and only weighed closer to barely 3 lbs - their scale showing a false "3 lbs. 15 oz." Even if this breed of puppy was a runt, at 4 lbs. it would have been underweight. It developed a severe bronchial cough within a day of purchase. The solution given for not eating was (of course) to buy the food (Hill's brand) being sold by this veterinarian (Scott Jarrett) which contains 5 grams of protein versus 25 - 30 grams of other puppy kibble sold at stores. All the animals seemed very happy and playful. The staff was very knowledgeable about each of the breeds. Almost all of them have paperwork for AKC or other registries and are from USDA approved breeders (according to the staff, anyway.) I look forward to going back soon and bringing home a puppy. read more

This place is only getting a star because I want everyone to see this review. Last week I noticed they had an adult Bearded Dragon for sale. I asked why she was there. I was told that her owner couldn't care for her. I brought her home last Thursday (10/4/18). I got anything and everything she could possibly want or need and followed every step their was for feeding her. She hadn't been eating, and today (10/9/18) when I got home from work she had passed away. After spending $200 on her, I figured I'd bring her back to the store and see what my options were. I literally got told "WE HAVE A 48 HOUR POLICY ON OUR ANIMALS". I had 2 associates that were working tonight that when she was brought in, her original owner said she hadn't been eating, and also over the past couple days she hadn't been eating too well. NO ONE EVER MENTIONED ANY OF THIS TO ME WHEN I ASKED ABOUT HER HISTORY. I didn't get a refund, a credit, a replacement or anything. Nothing, not even of an "I'm sorry" from the manager on duty tonight. So please don't get anything from this pet place, they don't care about anyone or anything and I don't want you guys to go through the heartbreak I'm going through. read more

The workers stood there the whole time talking about their lives while tons of people roamed around. Kids were beating on the animals' glass and when I tried to ask for info on one of the puppies, the girl was really rude. It was as if I was bothering her for information. The lady inside the kennels was sweet to the dogs, but outside the workers were beyond rude. Terrible service here. I bought my little girl a couple small angle fish yesterday and today-no surprise since one died-the tank they have the tank quaranteed. The fish were dropping like flies and while I didn't have the dead fish with me-and get this-the salesman remembered selling me the diseased fish-they refused to do anything about it! They weren't even nice! I won't put dime one in their business and took my little girl accross the street to the Petco aquarium and found a decent assortment of fishes including a great healthy angelfish for less money and even larger than the diseased fish from the substandard tanks at Petland. Stay away from petland unless you carry diseased fish insurance, their frozen dead fish with you and receipts to get a credit for their diseased stock! read more

My fiancé and I purchased a puppy in April 2014 and we had 7 wonderful months as puppy parents until she became VERY ill in November. After thousands of dollars trying to treat her, the vet was able to determine that she had Canine Systemic Lupus, a congenital disease that she was never screened for by the "breeder" she came from, and she passed away in February at 13 months old. Subsequently, working with the Claims and Warranty department of Petland has been an absolute nightmare. It has taken us 5 months of consistent contact and follow up (on our part, not theirs) to even remotely get a response. If you purchase an animal from these people, make sure they slowly and clearly explain EVERY SINGLE LINE of the paperwork they try and rush you through. Including, but definitely not limited to the signature space they "pre-highlight" for you. They will have you waive your right to the Animal Welfare Act, which protects you and your pet again the shady business practices and unbelievably terrible breeding practices, and then tell you that all they can do is offer a "replacement pet". Because that's what every broken hearted family wants, a "replacement pet". I had always said that I would "adopt, not shop" for our dog, but when we fell in love with our puppy I threw caution to the wind, and I never should have. The entire experience of having a Petland puppy was been terrible for us, and I will never again spend my money with a terrible company like this. read more

Let me start by saying the only reason I rated this place was because I have to give it at least one star in order to post a review. This place almost made me cry due to the way the dogs were living. They have one medium sized cage for a Great Dane and German Shepard to live together. The dogs poo and pee in their cages and one of the dogs was licking his own poop. They went crazy when the employees brought out food, and they scorched down the food so fast so I'm pretty sure that's because they barely feed them. One of the dogs was so skinny you could see his ribs. There were poop stains on the dogs butts because they haven't been bathed. They all smelled horribly. They were all sleepy and tired and some of them were shivering. They all looked sad and their eyes were droopy. They slept on wires with one really thin cloth as a blanket for TWO dogs. I felt so bad for all of them and wanted to show all of them the love they should be feeling but every time I asked the lady if I could see one of the dogs she told me it was their nap time and that I could check back in a half hour. I'm pretty sure they drug the dogs to go to sleep at a specific time. Finally I got to see one of the dogs. It was a 3 month old female Great Pyrenees. Mind you, these dogs are usually very playful, energetic, curious, and howl and bark a lot. Trust me, I did my research after I left this place. The dog I spent time with was extremely quiet, nervous, scared, droopy, and tired. She didn't even care to smell my siblings, boyfriend, and I. She peed twice due to nervousness, she didn't pick up one toy or even try to play with us. She kept sitting and staring at the doors as if she just wanted to be back in her miserable cage because she was too used to being in there rather than the real world. When I asked the employee questions about the dogs health and why she was so quiet, she answered with one worded responses. I loveeeeee animals. From fish to bears, and I have an adorable Maltese living with me at the moment, and seeing these dogs living this way disgusted me in so many ways. I will never go back to this place and I will never give this place business. I urge you all to please stop giving these places your money, keeping these businesses open should be against the law, this place was horrific. Read my review and understand what I'm saying. When I go to a chain like PetSmart, at least I see their animals up for adoption with blankets and toys. The puppies here sit in their own filth on metal grates, and the animals are in the open for children to torture. I would never buy from here, and I think something should be done for the sorry state of these poor animals. I'm not a fan of PetSmart either, but if a big box store like that can manage to have more humane conditions for their dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, there is no excuse for this place. This store probably has the worst customer service in the area! After 5 minutes of being in the store I asked one of the employees if I could play with a dog. She told me it would be a minute as she walked by me. After 30 minutes of waiting, I decided to ask another employee. She told me the same thing because "everyone was busy at the moment." After another 15 minutes of waiting I asked the first employee how much longer it would be. She turned her back at me and started speaking to her friend. Before she walked away, I said "Thank you for answering my question" very sarcastically, and she said "You're welcome." and walked away. The other employee spent the half hour standing in a cubby with customers and the dog they were playing with, while the other one spent it on the phone. Everyone seemed to ignore not just me, but all the other customers as well. The animals also looked sick, scared and tired. I was infuriated with the lack of customer service! read more

This is by far the best store that sells puppies that I have ever been in. On the day that I walked in it was loud and busy however the sounds were coming from kids and puppies playing and having fun. I cannot believe the environment there. I have been shopping quite a few puppy stores over the past month looking for a decent place to purchase a puppy. I have have always had rescue dogs and I'm looking for a small puppy to keep my older pit bull company. I have done a lot of research and am very familiar with the risks involved with purchasing from a pet store but I am looking for a specific breed and have had no luck finding a breeder in the state. Most pet stores I have been too have been more depressing than going to Chicago Animal Care and Control to adopt but I was super impressed with PetLand in Hoffman Estates. This was my last stop in pet stores if the place didn't sit well with me I would be waiting a few months and making the 7 hour drive to a breeder. What had me so impressed with this place was how easy going everyone was. Even though they did not have my specific breed and would not be making a purchase that day the sales girl offered allow me to hang out and play with other puppies because they like to socialize the puppies. This was the only time I had received such an offer from a pet store employee. Every other place I had been to has had a very stuffy attitude about playing with puppies and I have not experienced any other pet store to actually keep toys with the puppies in their cages. This was a huge deal for me because often pet store puppies learn bad habits (like nipping and yelping) while waiting for a forever home. The toys would help to keep them entertained during their stay. As I said earlier they did not have the breed I was looking for but the sales girl Kenyale was very helpful and patient. She answered all of my questions (and trust me that there were a lot) and offered to call me when my puppy comes in. Speaking to Kenyale and observing the other employees completely sold me on this place, these puppies are very well taken care of at this pet store . Now most comments about pet stores focus on the health of the puppies and how the business react in those situations. I cannot say much on this subject at this time but I will be posting my experiences after I pick up my puppy. read more

I am not a fan of places that pack in puppies into a small container and call it a home. I also don't support places that support puppy mills. We came here to look at the animals, and supplies for the pets we own. These places always make me sad. They are SUPER over-priced as well. I'm glad that you can take the animals out of their cages and hold them and love on them, they need it! I did notice that the workers genuinely seem to care about the animals and want to find them good homes. They also had a lot of helpful information. I bought a Persian kitten at petland in Hoffman estates for $2200. She was malnourished, sold underage, had two parasites (One parasite which has KILLED PEOPLE), and had ear mites. I brought her the next day after purchasing her, to a vet petland is associated with (contract purposes) and they told me she should not have been sold this young, and had earmites. Petland told me she was 18 weeks old and this vet told me she was 8 weeks old. If I had gotten her spayed which petland recommended, she could have died since they lied about her age. Petland did NOT pay for any visits or the antibiotics my kitten needed even though the contract stated they would. I have called multiple times and left messages but petland doesn't care. After the vet visit, I realized she was bleeding from her rectum so I rushed her to our family vet which is where I found out she had multiple parasites which was making her not eat and bleed all over. I love her so much and am glad I saved her from petland but I will never step foot in a petland again and would advise anyone thinking of buying something from here to not even buy a fish. This place deserves ZERO STARS!!!!!!! My family bought a Persian kitten for $2,300. The price is not the issue, the multiple infections and not to mention lies that came with the kitten. Petland lied to our family stating in the kittens paperwork that she was 18 weeks old. We were advised that the kitten had to be seen within a few days of purchase by petlands veterinarians. PETLANDS VETS SAID SHE WAS ONLY 8 WEEKS OLD! Lies lies lies! Our kitten was continuously bleeding from her rectum, not gaining weight, not playful and Blood all over our floors and in her stool! We rushed her to our family vet being that we can see this company is not trustworthy and she had multiple parasites in her stool that are finally being treated . First of all, we almost got her spayed because we were lied too about her age ! That is dangerous for a female kitten ! Shame on you all for lying to your customers ! The staff needs to be educated about properly caring for animals as well as ensuring the safety of both critters and customers. On a recent visit I saw unattended children terrorizing mice, hamsters, birds and rabbits. As a result children were bitten. Animals were stressed. The puppies, already looking tired and stressed from being continuously handled by the large crowd, were frantic when a large dog kept lunging at them in their cages. Small children were knocked to the floor in the chaos that followed. Several employees were present but did nothing to ensure safety or diffuse the situation. One tried to ask a manager for help. Nothing was done. Everyone's needs could've been accommodated had the dog owner been escorted to a quieter area of the store until the dog calmed down. When there was room to walk safely, the dog and owner could have resumed his search for another canine companion. In all fairness, I remember a wonderful visit a few years ago, where a kind, and caring employee sat with us and taught the kids how to properly hold and care for a rabbit. Since then, things have gone downhill. Recent visits have not been enjoyable. We left feeling sad for the animals who have no choice but to depend on Petland staff to keep them healthy and well cared for. We customers can walk away. read more

I live in the area and love going to petland with friends to play with the puppies. I am NEVER satisfied with the costumer service, but I go for the puppies. the last time I was there with my friend we asked to see a dog, they said there was a wait but very rudely. As we waited the lady took everyone else who walked in the store but not us, didn't even acknowledge us. while we were waiting I saw a guy worker carting a cute dog, I asked if it was being adopted..he laughed and said "I prefer the word sold" I find that so disrespectful. after waiting a good 45-50 minutes we got the dog and played with her. after a while we asked to see another but she said no because they were busy, yet nobody was asking for a dog & there were rooms open. looking at the dogs there was poop all over there cages, the poor dogs were pretty much sitting it! I would NEVER buy a dog from here, they come from puppy mills and that just encourages them, and they are very overpriced. overall my experience coming here is never a pleasure, the customer service is so horrible and the dogs are barely taken care of. if I could I would give it 0 stars. read more

The dog we got is a really good dog. although she did come with a cough but is covered by petland. the vet said its nothing to worry about. staff was really good and helpful. the only thing i didnt like was it is was to warm in there for the dogs, as well as the small cages and wire bottom which is not good for the dogs feet. i've rescued all my dogs before this one. she is again a great dog just wish the cages they were in were bigger and had solid bottom read more

Some of the staff is knowledgable. Some of the staff is rude it's really a hit or miss when it comes to service. I asked to see a pug one of the techs were ridiculously rude so when she walked away I simply asked someone else. I spent a good half hour with that pup. $1700 for a Shih Poo. Dogs are over priced but guess what it isn't a puppy mill. All these dogs have papers and they care for the animals. There are dogs in the back that may be sick and being nursed back to health. One of the techs I spoke with even decided to bring one of those dogs home because every other dog had a chance to go home to a family where as that one never did. They may not do an extensive background search but some techs do their best to get a feel for you by hanging around watching you interact with the puppy, ask you questions pertaining to your lifestyle and things that would let them know who you are as a person. For the price of a puppy or cat, steer clear. Unless you want a pure breed then sure spend your money otherwise find a dog from a rescue a loving home. read more

My last visit I was helped by an employee Haley, she was great, honest, happy and, very willing to help. I wasn't sure what kind of dog food to get. There were cute animals throughout the whole store and they were well kept, healthy, and for the most part playful. My daughters and I asked to take out a dog to play with and the workers seemed very annoyed that we were bothering them, however their sole job is to accommodate to those wanting to purchase and look at the puppies. We were told right off the bat that there is a 2 dog maximum, that you cannot take more than 2 dogs out of their cage to play with. So we took out two dogs and after about 10 minutes, one employee named Kassidy came and took the dogs without saying a word and then whispered under her breath to have a good day. It was very rude and made me not want to purchase any animals from this store. Very unfortunate experience. read more

I have been to the Bolingbrook Petland and it is awesome. Staff is great and very helpful. They are more than willing to let you play with a puppy. All their information they give is in depth and helpful when planning to purchase a new pup. However, the Hoffman Estates store was the opposite. The staff was unfriendly and cared more about talking amongst themselves than asking the customer for help. I stood there for fifteen minutes without getting asked if I needed any help (while the store was completely dead) and when I finally asked them for help they acted as if it was a burden to assist me. When I had a question the woman "helping" me responded with a sarcastic remark. I didn't appreciate the lack of maturity, and would definitely recommend the Bolingbrook location (or any other location besides this one.) read more

After reading all the reviews regarding the filthy cages, rude and lazy staff and extremely high prices for the dogs, I just wanted to comment on my own experience. I agree, the prices are extremely too high for the puppies which is why you see so many still locked up in the small cages well over 6+ months old. All too often, I have learned that many of the older dogs were returned for whatever reason which only breaks my heart more. This leads me to believe that Petland will sell ANYONE with money ANYTHING just to make a sale, only to have the pet returned days later. This in my opinion, is animal cruelty. Petland isn't fooling anyone when they claim that their puppies come from certified breeders and not puppy mills! BUT,,, Having said all of this, I was lucky not once but twice with 2 of my Scottish Terriers! My first lived a very healthy 16 years and my current baby girl is only 2 but extremely healthy and happy! Maybe I just got lucky. Lets face it, Petland will continue to sell puppies that are most likely from puppy mills so it is up to you as the consumer to do your homework. As for the staff, I too agree that they are not the friendliest or knowledgeable... they are after all, all high school or college kids trying to make a few bucks! Lets blame their parents for not raising them to be more responsible, not Petland for hiring them for minimum wage! Work ethics are not what they used to be. As for the children roughly handling the hamsters and other critters that they can get their sticky little fingers on,,,,where are their parents? These children didn't drive themselves to the store... its the parents who should be supervising and teaching their children how to be respectful of living creatures,,,not the teenagers that are employed by Petland. Do your homework before purchasing any type of pet, be it a puppy, hamster or fish....if you have to get financing to afford the pet,,,that should be a red flag that you can't afford it. Keep in mind, the purchase price is just the beginning of the expenses entailed with owning a pet. If you are lucky like I was/am there will be many, many more bills to pay for just providing a happy healthy life for your new family member. read more

We went in to get a bunny for my boyfriends 10 year old sister. She was using her own money (her mother covering the rest) I understand working on commission but she was 10 and they tried to take complete advantage. After that was fixed they were completely rude bri the cashier was by far the worst employee I have ever encountered. After purchasing the bunny and goodies she brought out a Ferrari food box and in front of us shoved her pen threw it 3 times then put the bunny in it. We had an unbelievably bad experience here. Last fall, we purchased an adorable female Morkie puppy from here. When we went to pick her up, they insisted on giving her a bath while we did paperwork. I thought that was odd, but I didn't think too much about it. When we got her home, we discovered that she was very good natured, but horribly sick. We put her in our enclosed kitchen with pee pads everywhere, and she bled and bled and bled. We were horrified and so worried. We rushed her to the vet where she failed a variety of tests. They started her on meds 4x per day and asked that we not leave her alone. We were so afraid she'd die. Diarrhea and blood dripping everywhere. We had to separate our other dog from her. We think they washed her to hide the evidence that she was very sick. The store HAD to know. My husband got angry, which he never does, and took her back to the store with her diagnosis and meds and demanded our money back, which they did. My son and I just sat at home and cried. One of the worst experiences we've ever had. Horrible, in fact. Don't buy anything from here. Please put these people out of business. read more
