Petco is the go to for our Cane Corsos Bruno and Ghost who are 7 months old on the 23rd of November. We are always greeted with a smile and immediately asked if we could be helped. What I enjoy about this particular Petco is every time we visit the floors are clean, no smell of urine or number 2 HUGE PLUS. The team members are professional and courteous. One in particular is Mayra. Mayra always remembers Bruno and Ghost and our boys are always excited to see her. Mayra is extremely knowledgeable and will look up any questions I have regarding our boys Bruno and Ghost. Petco does offer vaccines every Tuesday and the vet is friendly, patient and gentle with every lil family member he meets. We will be back for treats, toys and food for Bruno n Ghost. This is the only place we bring our staffy for a bath and nail trim. Lexi takes such good care of him. He usually gets a bit scared so they all give him extra love to make him feel at ease. They also know he suffers from allergies so they make it a point to ask how he's doing and make sure they use the right products on him. We've been seeing Lexi for about 7 years now. We love her so much we followed her from her previous location to Schaumburg. Can't recommend her and the staff enough!! read more

Beware of staff incompetence: I have an older husky-retriever mix. She is a ball of fur and so loving. She went for nails, shampoo and brushing and a "trim" of her backside which sometimes gets poop in the fur under her tail, Lexi at Petco inexplicably shaved her underside down to bare skin. So close it she has suffered razor scrapes on the most sensitive area.As a double-coated dog this should be a crime. We were not told and we did not notice it until later that night when she was lying down. It's January and I have to figure out a way for her to regulate her body temperature and stay warm when she goes outside. I'm livid and incredibly sad about what happened. read more

This is a terrific Petco...the employees are so helpful, kind and love their two and four legged customers! I always finds what I am looking for and if they don't have it in store, it can be delivered quickly! I have had our two dogs groomed with Jessica and her associates in the grooming department for years now and they are great - talented, professional and so gentle with the animals. I have found that the dogs overall health is better when they are groomed every month. Lexi at the groomers is so sweet! I have a young puppy getting his first groom. Lexi was so awesome and has a ton of patience! She saw how my puppy was nervous with the intimidating sounds of the salon and when my puppy got too anxious, she tried everything she could to calm him but even though my puppy did not get a full groom Lexi was sweet enough to reassure me that this is something my puppy will slowly learn and be more comfortable with in the future as he gets used to other grooming appointments. I will definitely bring him back here as the staff here is has a ton of patience and strives to give my puppy the best care! read more

Needed to pick up dog food and Petco is our go to place. Of course, you can't go into Petco without picking up a dog toy or two and some rawhide. Today, it was one of their shelter days. There were about a dozen dogs they were showing, all on leashes and placed strategically around the store. For $5 we bought a goodie bag to help the shelter and got a $5 off coupon we used for the dog food. I fell in love with a small Springer Spaniel with a lame paw. No one knew how it was hurt as a puppy, but now at 3 years old, the dog was happy and got around well. It was so friendly and I swear she begged me to take her home with me. But, my better judgment prevailed and we left with the goodie bag, a hedgehog dog toy and a 30 pound bag of dog food. read more

Took my dog in tonight to get his nails trimmed. The girl who was there, her name was Ashley. She greeted us and we told her what we were looking for. She told me that they have a special that included nail trim and buff, ear clean, brush out for 15 minutes for $20.00 and if I wanted his teeth brushed it would be an extra $5.00. I couldn't pass it up. We stood there watching how much fur she took off. He sheds all the time. It was unbelievable. My dog was smiling the whole time. Another day, another cat-related review from Candice G. So far, I'm three for three in October... can I make it the whole month!? Answer: Maybe, but I ain't aiming for it. I mean, that just sounds damn crazy, and that's coming from a cat lady. ... I will, however, give a little forewarning that tomorrow's review will be feline-focused as well. So sit tight and get ready for at least one more day of heavy petting. Again, on the search for a decent litter-box selection, but after visiting 6 different stores, I finally came to the conclusion that they just don't make 'em like they used to and I'd have to suck it up and get a new crummy model of something that seems like it should be pretty simple and straightforward, but somehow, is not. It's a box... to poop in. A $30-$40 box, TO POOP IN. Sooo, maybe cat people really are crazy. But it still beats taking a dog (though I love dogs) for a walk in negative 10,000 degree Chicago winter days and picking up the steaming pile just so you can get a little bit of warmth against your gloves. Domestication... apparently the root of all crazy. Anyway, the sh*tter selection here was decent, but they only had one of the kind I wanted and I needed two... plus, I think it was a couple bucks more than at PetSmart, as they were having a sale. This PetCo did have several items that were priced better than the other chain store, like litter and canned cat food, though we ended up leaving empty handed as Target actually was better priced than all of them, plus I get the 5% off with the Target RedCard, so it was a no-brainer. So while I didn't end up purchasing anything from this location, the store was clean, the animals (mostly rodents) seemed like happy little hairballs and the staff were both friendly and helpful and spent time interacting with each other in a professional manner (something that can't be said for PetSmart), the customers and the animals. I especially enjoyed the one girl with the bird on her shoulder offering to answer any of our questions, or help us locate anything we were looking for. I'll go back to price-compare against the plethora of area pet supply stores, and I'm sure someday I'll have some business that can be wrapped up here and topped off with a smile from my friendly neighborhood PetCo-worker. read more

Ho hum...."can I scan your PALS card sir...? There is not really a whole lot to say about PETCO. I typically come here as a last resort since I order most of my stuff online from chewy. However, since moving here I have had a few million other things going on so my cat, Nero is stuck with the Petco wares. Nero is an homage to the crazed Roman emperor of the same name, consequentially. I have never in my life owned a cat prior to him, but my previous Loft apartment was not conducive to dogs, so the rest is history. Driving 3 and a half hours here with him meowing his ass off in the back seat damn near brought me to the brink of madness. Still, since the little guy went through a traumatic experience, I hooked him up with some new toys, catnip spray, etc. What began as a simple stop for food and litter turned into 150 bucks. This place is actually quite small compared to most other chain stores in the area, which I found odd. Most of the other large retailers bring their A game with extreme prejudice in this little bastion of consumerism. Still, I was able to find the brands I was looking for and the staff was pleasant enough. Also, if you follow GPS, and I am at it's mercy for the time being, getting to this parking lot is like trying to scale mount Fiji. 3 U turns later, and after actually having the place in sight, my iPhone came very close to being launched out the window at oncoming traffic. read more

GROOMING. My fault for not remembering to bring in proof of rabies vaccine but the groomers made it IMPOSSIBLE for keeping my dog's grooming appointment today. They said they need vaccine on vet's letterhead. I had my Vet email me proof, which they wouldn't accept. My vet's office said that they do verbal proofs ALL THE TIME but groomers said I need to show proof. I didn't have my glasses on so unable to see what my vet actually emailed. Come home and it's plain as day that there was a rabies vaccine on 7/2023. They then said my dog had had parvo back in July, which upon reviewing the medical record at home said "housed near parvo positive kennels. " This is a recently adopted shelter dog from Chicago, so of course my dog had ALL the required vaccines. It was blatantly obvious they were too lazy to groom my dog. I also called back to ask what the deal was for their behavior and was told I had to speak with a manager. Kept me on hold 5+ minutes and then sent me to voicemail. Esteban in the fish department was so helpful! Very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about what he does. He was very patient and spent quite a long time educating me about how to properly care for different fish as well as the ecosystem in the tank (I had 5 fish die prior to my conversation with Esteban- so I really needed the help!). So appreciative, thank you! Update 2/25/19: Returned a tetra I just purchased 3 days ago bc it was attacking my other fish. While I was returning this fish, I informed the employee (Jillian) that either the fish I was returning, or one of the other 2 tetras I purchased the same day from a separate tank, seems to have given my 2 black mollies at home "Ich". (There are currently about 4 tanks at Petco currently under observation bc the fish have Ich...my novice fault for assuming the other fish were fine...) I totally get that Petco gets their fish from a supplier, of course. So it's not necessarily their *fault* the fish are sick (at least I'm not going to make such an assumption). However, I really did not appreciate her very bland, uninterested, "That's not good..." (You think!? I'm pissed that my other fish are sick now!) Her attitude/demeanor was very off-putting. Instead, how about a response like, "Oh, no, Im so sorry. Do need help with how to treat your other fish? I can show you some products", or "Will you show me which tanks you purchased your fish from over the weekend so we can watch them/treat them?" NOTHING. She clearly didn't give a crap. Regardless, I will leave my 5 star rating for now, as all of the other employees I usually interact with there are pretty awesome. I've been going to this location for my pet needs for many years now and I've always had a good experience here. Recently, a canned food I wanted was still wrapped on a skid from a shipment they were in the process of stocking. An employee went out of her way to pull individual cans from the middle of the skid for me just so I wouldn't have to come back. Does your pet not like the new food you're trying to get it to eat? No problem, just return the food with most of the food in the bag and exchange for something else. As many times as it takes. No receipt? If you bought it with your PetPals card, they can look up all your previous purchases. That's awesome service. The best thing is instead of selling kittens for obnoxious amounts of money like the place across the street, they allow Cinderella's Hope to house their cats/kittens there for adoption. Adopting is not only cheaper than buying, it helps out those poor homeless cats and kittens in need. All their cats come chipped, vaccinated, and neutered/spayed. Those procedures cost more than the meager adoption fee they collect. Petco even gives out coupons for pet accessories and food with your new adoption. The only thing that is wonky is their remotely controlled lighting system that isn't timed correctly. They turn out a bunch of the lights during certain times of the day so if you go when those lights are out, you may not be able to see anything in certain sections of the store. I understand the need to conserve energy but near total darkness is unacceptable during business hours. Overall great place with friendly employees who actually help. read more

Update: I called Petco corporate and asked about my e-mail request for a rebate. They apologized. Fair enough. They claimed their online system is not the best way to get in touch with them. I can see that. Most companies generally don't pay heed to the outpouring of mail in their in-boxes. Anyway, they were nice and said they'll be sending me my $20 mail-in rebate form. I'm happy so far but not enough to up the star rating. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as pet retailers go, I stick to Petsmart. I suppose it's their frequent marketing campaigns and prominent store placements that drew my attention. That said, I am still a consumer in search of good bargains, particularly for a dog igloo. I can't believe how much those puppies cost, from $50 to $174. Last Sunday's circular at my local suburban newspaper from Petco offered a $20 mail-in rebate and a free dog pad. I decided to check it out at this Petco at the corner of Roselle and Golf. Ooh, ooh, that smell. Like Petsmart, Petco placed its fish and bird inventory at the front of the store. But not a single Petsmart I had been to smells like that. I won't go so far to say it reeks, but the smell infiltrated the barrier my congested nose puts up. Come to think of it, I'd visited another Petco in a different state, and it smells like this one, too. But I kinda got what I went in for. A mid-sized igloo that fits about a 40lb dog for $80. It was on sale with a Petco card discount. A free pad. But I left the store without the paperwork for the $20 mail-in rebate. I called the store and was told they don't have it, and to call the corporate office. I went online and left them a e-mail. I've yet to hear from them. And it's day 2 since I bought the igloo. I do, however, want to make mention of the 2 lovely salespeople. One had to reach for the clumsy, awkard igloo; and the other came after me when I left my ccard on the counter (good thing I'm one of those conscious shoppers who bring the shopping cart back to the store when there's no deposit ramp in the lot, or I'd lose that ccard). read more

My daughter went in for a specific shampoo. When she walked in she asked the girl at the register if they had it, to which the cashier caught an attitude immediately and goes I don't know what that is. My daughter suggested she looks it up in the computer but the cashier couldn't be bothered and goes I'm getting my manager. The manager asks what happened and when my daughter explains the manager goes well you've got the attitude. Says nothing about the shitty attitude her employee has and lets her know that behavior is ok. They will not be getting anymore of our business and I will be contacting corporate. I wish I could give a better rating, but I just can't. The service here is just not worthy. I typically get my snake supplies at PetSmart or Birds & Beasts (when I can make it out that way). I think both stores have better selections, and PetSmart has better prices. B&B is a hair more expensive, but they're also an indie shop, so I understand and am happy to pay it. Back to PetCo. Their prices are okay, but the service is awful. I can never find an employee on the floor, and the one time I did, she was so obviously unhappy to help me, it was astounding. If anyone else in the area sold feeder mice (other than the horrible hell-hole across the street from them- you know who I mean, and I will absolutely never support them), I would likely shop there, instead. I present a sampling of my experiences here: 1. A female employee who was nice enough until I said I needed a "feeder mouse", at which point she got snippy and did not want to help me at all. My most sincere apologies for feeding my pet (a Ball Python who will not eat anything frozen or pre-killed, trust me, I've tried). 2. When a mouse died within an hour of leaving the store and I needed to return it for a live one, I was chided by an employee for not having filled out paperwork to buy a "feeder animal". Paperwork that I was never shown and have not had to fill out since... 3. I had a coupon for a percentage off a bag of "companion animal food", which I tried to use for some cat food. I was told at the register that "cats and dogs are not companion animals". Oh, really? I'd love to know what they are, then! I was told that I could use it on "food for animals like turtles, fish, and hamsters". Ahh, my good companion, Jenkins the Painted Turtle. We go everywhere together. I could go on (and on, and on) about the lack of service I've gotten here. But for some good news: 1. They actually sell feeder mice, a very rare find in this area and something desperately needed for us live feeders out there. 2. The store is always very clean (I don't know how, considering that I never see more than three employees here at a time). 3. I'm never inundated with "can I give your dog a treat?" while I'm here; both of my dogs have special dietary needs and cannot have any grains, one cannot have chicken, and I am very particular about what they eat. I hate having to either explain why they cannot have a treat or be looked at as a jerk that won't let my dogs have something fun. I'm never bothered with overzealous trainers or groomers trying to get me to sign my Beagle mix up for classes or get my Poodle groomed (I handle both of those needs on my own, thank you). I like to be left alone while I shop, so I guess a lack of employees is nice in that regard! 4. They support rescues and shelters; that gives any store an automatic star from me. Overall, an irksome though necessary shopping experience, and one that I will continue to endure, if only because my snake needs to eat. read more

Went in but at first I thought they were closed cause half the lights were off. I couldn't see merchandise because it was so dark. I asked for help finding an item and also why lights were off. They said they were saving energy and lights will be on later. I said its so dark in the corner I can't find what I am looking for. I take my dog to the groomers regularly every month and the ladies at the grooming salon are the sweetest ever. They always answer my questions and take their time listening to my concerns, they're always happy to take my dog at the last minute - even when they're super busy or short on staff. My dog is always happy to see them, so I know they treat him very well when he's there with them for 3 hours. The store in general has undergone some renovations, but I prefer Petco over PetSmart because of their member program. Petco has the pet pals program vs petsmart's perks program. I always get special discount on select merchandise, but the dollars I spend rack up points and I get emailed $5 coupons every time I spend $100. It may not seem like much but buying 2 medium bags of dog food for $40 each, dog grooming $40, any other necessities like leashes/collars/toys/treats/etc $30 and you've almost 2 coupons that expire 6 months from their issue date & there's not limit as to how many you can use at a time. read more

I've always preferred PetSmart because they seem to be better in every way. Their stores are bigger than Petco, with a much better selection (especially when it comes to things like pet furniture and carriers, but they also seem to have more cat food, treats, and toys, too). PetSmarts also seem to be better kept-up than Petcos... not necessarily cleaner, but less dingy and worn down. One evening, I desperately needed litter and found myself by a Petco, so I figured just this once I'd pop in. I was too far away to get to PetSmart before close anyways and figured there was no harm. Wow, was I in for a shock! A 42lb bag of Fresh Step litter usually costs $16 at PetSmart. It was $6 more at Petco... $22 for the exact same thing, and that was the "discounted" price! So while it seemed nice, apart from the dinginess... friendly staff, a nice cat rescue in the middle... I won't be shopping there again. It's just too expensive. read more

I've not been close to a Petco for about a year and have been shopping at a different pet store because of it. I recently moved and was excited that this store was very close to my house (we all know that proximity of the pet store for a pet owner is as important as our proximity to the grocery store). I was really excited about the selection of wet cat food and dry dog food but the prices were just too high to come back regularly. I paid ~$6.00 more per 8lb bag of a well known holistic dog food than I have been paying for the last year. Sorry to say that I just can't absorb that much of a price difference. read more

Grooming staff not professional and ill prepared. On my first appointment staff refused to wash my dog because he had a scratch the size of a finger nail on his ear. On my next appointment I was late, but I never received a call reminder or a text reminder and they canceled my appointment at 11:15 even though I was standing outside the salon door social distancing. And then when I was allowed in the room I was ignored for 15 minutes as the girls continued to work. At no time was I told I should come back or try to make another appointment they just proceeded to tell me that I was late. I asked to speak to the manager and she refused to come speak to me I had to yell my conversation across the entire store.. .obviously - very unprofessional - uneducated inexperienced- groomers. I would not take my dogs there if that's how they treat me I would not want them to treat my animals that way. I will no longer spend any money in that store whatsoever!!! read more

I've been a Petsmart lady for a good few years now, but I decided to come to Petco the other day to see if it was any different. I'm glad I did! The prices are pretty comparable, but the selection is very different. Petco has a lot of natural products that they don't sell at Petsmart (food, treats, cat litter, etc). The main reason I came here was to get some different cat litter. They have TONS to choose from. They have stuff made from crushed walnuts, corn, and wheat. Great for cats with allergies (or you). And you can buy huge bags of it. They won me over. read more

DO NOT GET YOUR DOG GROOMED HERE. I would give zero stars. My dog was dropped off happy and healthy. The two girls working the saloon took my dog and I left. When picking my dog up, I asked if everything went well, and was told yes, he was good. I asked if there were any issues, I was told no, and that his ears were dirty. I took my dog home, and shortly after he got home he started scooting his butt across the floor. He has never done this. He then proceeded to his bed, where he laid lethargic most of the afternoon. I called Petco to ask if my dog had any issues at the saloon, thinking maybe they gave him something to calm him down. I had to leave a message and asked some one to call me back. That was yesterday. No one called me back. I called back today to make an appointment for my other dog. I was told I could not make an appointment because I complained about my dog. First off, I asked if anything happened I should know about. I was a concerned pet owner. I did not complain about the hair cut. I was told by Jessica they had too many complaints, therefore they would not take my dogs. I said I had never complained. They told me my sister had complained about a haircut once over two years ago, and therefore I could not be satisfied, so they would not take them anymore. TWO YEARS AGO. She proceeded to tell me that I was told there as an issue when I picked my dog up. This is 100% untrue. I was NEVER told this. I was told, and I quote, "Everything went fine, no problems". So are they calling me a liar? Well they said they tell people things all the time, and it goes in one ear and out the other. This is not the case. I was told, Everything was "fine". I am extremely upset and will be taking this to Corporate out of principal alone. I am glad I found this out now. Take your dog elsewhere if you love it. There is no telling what is being done behind closed doors. read more
