I purchased a birdcage about 18 months ago. I paid over $600.00 for this item. When I went to put the cage together, it was missing a small part for the wheel support. A few weeks ago, I returned to the store to request the part. The salesperson spoke with his manager, who explained that a similar issue had occurred with another customer. The manager said he would order the part for both customers. I called 3 weeks later and was told by the salesperson that the parts did not come in yet. Today, I called and the salesperson informed me that they never placed the order for the parts and cannot obtain them from the company (PREVUE). They will not provide paperwork work for claimed AKC breeds when asked they hang up... called corporate and they now have blocked me because ACK can't identify the dog they have they do nota have pure bred animals and are a literal puppy mill! Any AKC owners would be proud to share that information! But I've been banned! Great store you have! I work in the animal rescue facility, and I can tell you right now that this is animal abuse. These animals are absolutely terrified. The cats and dogs clearly come from puppy mills where they lived in disgusting environments with no socialization and are very very ill. Please please please avoid from "buying" puppies from this pet store as well as any. If you want a purebred, do your research. Go to a reputable breeder who will show you the parents or go to a rescue/shelter. This is disgusting. All they want is money, they do not care about the animals. read more

Petland is not a good store. The "enclosures" they keep animals in are cramped and basically fish tanks. It smells terrible but what do I expect, the tanks are open for the visitors to hold and pet the animals. I've also seen people injure animals like how a person once picked up a bird and injured its wing (The bird was fine after). But it has slightly improved as they are not selling dogs from puppy mills anymore. I NEVER LEAVE A BAD REVIEW BUT THIS NEEDED TO BE SAID. They fractured my pet rabbit's nail. I took my rabbit Zeus to PetLand Hoffman Estates on Sunday, August 13 for a regular nail trim and they completely broke my rabbits nail. I understand accidents happen but THIS could've been easily avoided. Zeus is offered free nail clippings because I originally got him from there. I took him in and as they started cutting, my rabbit moved. This caused his nail to immediately start bleeding. However, they continued to cut the nails of his other paw. They didn't tell me the severity of it until they dropped him the SECOND time. As Zeus hit the floor, I immediately saw that and told them to just wait until I calm him down. I notice his nail is COMPLETELY broken and hanging to the side. I confronted them and they had the audacity to say that it was like that before??? So please explain to me this... If you notice his nail is like that PRIOR to the nail cut, why would you fail to mention that. So they continue to cut his nail knowing that it's completely broken. How dare you blame me when it's clearly your fault. No sense of taking some responsibility for your actions. Instead the staff member simply said "I'm sorry, should've told you that before I started". If they owned up to it, I maybe would've been more understanding, considering I know that bunnies can move around constantly. But NOPE. They tried to make it seem like his nail was already like that when I brought him in. My bunny ended up having a fractured nail and it costed me a $300 vet bill, along with giving him medicine to stop any infection. Super untrained staff. These are people's babies and you chose to hire the most unfit people. On top of that, clearly they don't care about their small animals since children and different people are CONSTANTLY picking them up and stressing them out. Awful. Just awful. I was there today with my kids and I cried in the car when we came out. I wish I would have read reviews before I brought them here. Save yourself the heartache. The dogs are sitting in their pee and poo, and have it on their coats and paws and toys. My daughter saw one eating poop. Three or 4 dogs are fighting inside little cages not meant for more than one. Or they are all asleep because they are sick or undernourished. They are not socialized to be around people. The puppies we played with had no interest in us unlike most healthy puppies. They were lethargic. They smelled awful. The employee said they don't go outside and come out of their cages once a day to be played with inside another small enclosure. After the employee let us play with 3 different dogs - each born in October 2021 - she gave them a finger full of Puppy Boost before she put them back in their filthy cages. Puppy Boost is for weak, undernourished, stressed puppies. These are not healthy animals. The small animals like bunnies, ferrets and birds are afraid and extremely stressed by all the handling they endure. Enclosures are unkempt and smelly. I feel awful for these poor animals. Not a happy place to visit. I wanted to take them all home with me to save them from this cruelty. But the prices are so high they are destined for a sad fate. read more

My husband has a Traumatic Brain Injury. His original therapy dog, a Puggle passed away in June,2017. Since that day, my husband's condition has steadily worsened to the point where I was ready to move out. I have been trying to find another Puggle for months. I was not successful. On Friday, April 13, I found a Puggle at Petland. Amanda, my new BFF, asked me if I could come in the next day. I couldn't because my son was getting married that weekend. Amanda warned me that the Puggle may not be there as the weekend is their busiest time. I explained that if it was meant to be, the Puggle would still be there. He survived the weekend. Amanda called me to let me know. I told her I would be there the next day. However, the worst ice and snow storm hit and this girl does not drive in that. Called the next day. This Puggle was STILL there. I went and got him and he is amazing. Petland, Amanda's customer service is insanely good. Give her a raise. Their prices are on par with other pet shops. In fact you get more bang for ur buck at Petland. For all you GOT fans, his name is Drogon and my husband is so much better. Thank you Petland! UPDATE: Drogon saved a life Sunday! I mean this in the literal sense. My father in law fell at 630 am. My husband and I were both sound asleep. However, Drogon barked and went running into our room and jumped on the bed to wake us up. If I could rate this place 0 stars I would. Petland manager desperately needs some customer service and diversity training. I purchased a hardness from here because I recently got a puppy. The harness didn't fit properly so I brought it back which I'm allowed to do according to the receipt. I asked one of the young ladies there if I could have store credit that I could apply towards purchasing another item. She said she had to ask the manager. No problem . The manager comes up to you to discuss, I guess. So I explained the same thing to him. He tells me he can only give me a different size. I asked again to confirm where or not he would give me store credit. In the middle of our conversation another customer walks up interrupting the conversation and he walks off with her. No, excuse me for a sec, I'll be right back. Nothing. So I start walking away towards my husband who was looking at other harnesses and collars. We decided to just forget it and go to the the aquarium adventure side to purchase fish and supplies as we frequently do. As we are walking to the other side. I'm speaking to my husband letting he know that the manager is not willing to give me store credit and how he just walked away from me as if I didn't exist. The manager proceeds to follow us. Making comments to my husband saying we cursed at him, etc. My husband responded saying we didn't curse at him they don't know customer service. This guy gets loud with my husband saying we don't understand, customers dont come first there. He goes even further telling my husband to step outside calling him derogatory name and trying to antagonize him. The manager has one of the young lady call the police on us. For what? We have yet to try and understand. The manager even went as far as to tell my disabled sister and my nephew that if they are with us they can get the fuck out. i never write reviews, but my experience here has quite honestly shook me to my core. this place is a TERRIBLE place for small animals. it's a literal free for all where anyone can grab and pick up a guinea pig, bunny, bird, etc. with no restrictions. i saw many animals being picked up and handled very roughly and the employees didn't even reprimand these individuals. many children were also there taking guinea pigs out of their hideys when they were clearly in distress. the parents didn't even tell their kids to handle them gently which should've been the employee's job, but they clearly have no knowledge of small animals whatsoever. if they did, they'd know that guinea pigs have fragile backs and should not be picked up and dragged by their hind legs. that's exactly how paralysis can occur in a piggie. if they were educated they would also know that they are prey animals and they should not be handled every second of every day by humans. not to mention the subpar enclosures they had for these animals. although they are "small animals" they need a ton of space and there were three piggies and/or bunnies in one tiny enclosure. they literally had one person manning the entire small animal enclosure area with another individual just standing off on the side with an ear piece in pretending like they were doing something. i'm honestly shocked, traumatized, and disappointed in the treatment of these animals. this place should honestly get shut down, but please get educated and fix your system. would give a negative review if i could, this was atrocious and absolute chaos, do better. read more

Take a long hard look at this bloody puddle of poo, and ask yourself: "do I want to be elbows deep in this for the next 10-15 years? A couple months ago we went against all better judgement and bought a seemingly healthy Boston terrier puppy from PetLand Hoffman Estates. We had planned to use a breeder and just popped into the store to get a feel about what our little children think of puppies. She immediately had diarrhea but we figured that was normal with all the stress of where she came from. During our vet check at the approved vet's office the vet said she was in perfect health and prescribed some deworming meds. Her diarrhea got worse and started to include blood, and since it was urgent we took her to ER. There their ran a multitude of tests and discovered she had parasites. At least we had an answer, or so we thought. We were given antibiotics and anti-parasite meds along with the rice and turkey (bland diet). She only got worse. We were finally able to get into a well reviewed local vet's office where her food was changed again, more antibiotics, pectin 3x/day, and probiotics. SHE GOT WORSE. Now she's beginning her third round of antibiotics, and has been switched to a special food that you can only get with a prescription. This is our last hope. If this doesn't work I don't know how we'll go on. I called Petlands solutions department and was told there was nothing they could do, and no financial coverage they would give. But she did offer me her "hopes and prayers." They use contracts that are carefully crafted to ensure when you leave with a dog with chronic health issues they are not responsible. However, I disagree with this. I'm sure her health was apparent at the pet shop since she was over 16 weeks when we got her and had been their for two long months. They knew. Bought a hamster from here. My mistake. Read my last review (very ironic, I even mentioned hamsters... must be fate...). Got a dog here 8 years ago. He came with intestinal parasites... Well, 8 years later, I wanted a hamster for my step daughter. Got the hamster. Seemed ok for first couple days. Got a nice cage from the store, along with the exact food they fed in store, and, a water bottle. A couple days later, his anus prolapsed... Now, I've worked as a vet tech, and, I've kept and bred over 200 hamsters in my younger years. Never have I seen this happen. Lets just say my step daughter, who got attached to the hamster in a couple days, was freaked out and this simply wasn't a good experience. So far, I've bought two pets from this store over the last decade. First one had parasites, and, second one had major issues and a prolapsed anus after a couple days. Fool me once, shame on you, I guess fool me twice, shame on me. You won't fool me a third time. Will never shop at this store for a live animal again. Their food, cages, toys, treats and everything else are higher cost than elsewhere as well. So, no reason to ever go here again. Another note, while in the store, my step daughter wanted to just take a look at the hamsters again for fun. She was bit. Check pictures. This was right after the bite, blood kept coming more. And another note. The hamster was sold to me as a female. It was in the female cage with many other females. Store employees said it was female. It was a male. I noticed right away after a quick look after getting home. Which was fine with me, I didn't really care if we got a male or female. But, just shows how little these employees know. Petland is a chain that is well-known for selling dogs from puppy mills. Their outlandinsh prices are 2-3x what a reputable breeder would charge and nearly 8x what you'd pay at a shelter, but they attempt to justify it by offering a 1-year warranty, bed, toys, cage, etc. I volunteer with one of the big animal rescue sites and while we are aware of what Petland does, there is no way to shut it down without proof of the animals being neglected or treated unfairly. I walked in over the weekend just to observe the well-being of the puppies and numerous ones had visible health issues (which I documented on camera & will submit to the proper department for review) and many had no toys or blankets in their cages. While I have no doubt these puppies will eventually go to good homes, I will not support a company that is an obvious proponent of puppy mills and helps to keep them in business. Unfortunately, puppy mills are not yet illegal in Illinois and in many states, but many advocates are taking steps to eradicate this inhumane practice. Please be wary of purchasing pets from any Petland location as they are bound to have a myriad of health conditions. Petland will deny this up and down, but take what they say with a grain of salt - two customers in the store were quoted two vastly different amounts ($3000 vs $4500) for a puppy just while I was there alone... read more

I was hesitant to buy from here in the first place because I don't support puppy mills or the way they treat their dogs but I fell in love with this pup so I took him home which when I took home was coughing. His papers said that he was checked on March 21st and had no cough. He was not checked on or was given something to suppress the cough because he was not coughing when I saw him earlier that day. His cough sounded bad so I took him to the vet Monday . He had pneumonia and Petland is responsible for not taking care of this dog along with all the others. The racist manager refused her refund or store credit, cursed at her and her husband. Threatening her husband in front of many other shoppers. OK, Where to begin. My wife and I went to this store to buy a parakeet. We were treated nice and we bought a bird. Brought her home. Put in in a very large cage (6 feet high, 2 feet deep and 4 feet wide). We already had an older bird who instantly did not like our new feathered family member. So, the wife and I decided to donate our older bird to the store. My wife did not go inside the store because she felt bad about the fact we could not keep both of these birds. We were going to buy another bird that was in the enclosure with the new bird that we bought yesterday figuring that there would be compatibility because they were all together before . When I walked in the store with the bird in a box and my face shield on because of the covid-19 virus, I stood at the desk for about 5 minutes before some guy came over asked me, and I quote "what do you want?". I said I want to donate a bird, then buy another one. he said "the only way we accept bird donations is if it is in a cage, so you have to buy a cage". I replied "OK, please show me am inexpensive cage. He said "There's one there for $89". I said "guy, I just want to donate the bird. I will buy a cage and put the bird in it and hand her back to you so I would like a cheaper cage that I am going to give back to you. We walked to the other side of the store and showed me a cage for around $50. I saw one for around $30 and said "OK, I will buy the $30 cage and donate both the bird and the cage to you guys. He said "NO!" I will not allow you to out that bird in a smaller cage." I said, "Come on. I am really trying to do the right thing here. You know I could have simply opened the box and she would fly away but of course I would not do that". Here is where it gets to a low level. He replied and I quote 'The you are an A**hole." He grabbed the box with the bird inside from my hands. I realized this guy is either having a bad day or is imbalanced. So I head to the door to leave. He jumps in front of me so I steered to the left to get by him to go to the door and leave. He literally jumped in front of me again to block my path so I veered to the right to get to the door. I got to the door opened it and then he jumped again in front of me and shoved me backwards into the store. So, I shoved him back to get him away from me which resulted in him falling to the floor. I continued to try to leave. I get outside and he starts with a flurry of cuss words. Sadly, I fell into his state of mind and cursed him back. Cops were called but we already left. They come to my house and I spoke with a cop on the phone and he concurred that the "story" I told was confirmed by a camera that they have in the store. If I was his superior, he would be fired. Without an apology I will never go back to buy the bird stuff we need for the birds. There is too much worthy competition for a customer to be treated like that. I am 65 year old and was taught respect opens doors. He gave an excuse that he tried to stop me from leaving because he was afraid that I was going to let the bird loose outside. How noble, even commendable except for the fact I did not have box with the bird in it ... he took it away and I think put her on the counter so I did not have the bird, or any bird to release. I have a dear friend who had been in the pet business since before the internet and he told me that he was appalled by the behavior of the sales person. Hello everyone, I wanted to come on social media and share my story. On November 30th I purchased a shihpoo puppy from my local Petland in Hoffman Estates Illinois. At the time of sale they said the puppy was completely healthy & ready to come home. Unfortunately things took a dark turn on December 21st just 2 weeks after Teddy came home with me. He become very painful to the touch & would cry out because of all the pain he was in. We rushed him over to the vet where they gave him pain killers and they sent him back home. After a couple hours however the pain killers would go down and he'd be in pain again. We would then call our primary vet where they kept Teddy for a couple hours. We received a call where they told us Teddy needed to be seen by a specialist because he was only getting worse. At this point we were at our 3rd animal hospital of the day, this is where they told us Teddy was doing so much worse & his pain was progressing. We were given 3 options, they could run tests ( MRIS,X-RAYS, ETC ) for a price of $13,000.00, keep Teddy alive on the pain killers he was previously given, or he could be put down. The vet did let us know she could run all the tests possible but that would only put Teddy in more pain & it was only a slight chance that they would help find what the source of his pain was. Keeping him alive on the pain killers would only do so much & wouldn't be very humane. So we made the hard and final decision of putting our 3 month old pup down. We still owed Petland the $4450.00 that Teddy cost as he was bought with an in store credit card. I called and filed claims left and right until they finally got back to me on Feb 18th to tell me that I would only be able to receive store credit for another dog. At this point this was the only thing we could do to not let our money go to waste. The Petland claim representative told me I had only 3 days to purchase another dog due to an Illinois law being passed that prohibits these stores from selling puppies. With that being said, I got out of work on Friday February 18th and rushed to Petland to find myself a new companion, which is when I found Bruno. A 2 1/2 month old Shihtzu. He would come home with me that night. The next day when I got home from work he was pooping blood and not being active as a puppy should. Due to my past experience with Teddy I immediately rushed Bruno over to the vet where they told me they had never seen a puppy so sick. I called Petland as soon as the vet said this, when the store manager told me and I quote "this is normal ". They told me I could drop Bruno off at a shelter but they could not take the puppy back. He had to be put down immediately due to his high level of pain on Feb 19th. Just under 24 hours of coming home. I've spent thousands of dollars on vet bills for dogs that weren't even with me a combined total of a month. Petland now refuses to give me my money back and doesn't seem to care of all the trauma they've put me through. This has been such an emotional rollercoaster and I hope this story lets others know not to support these businesses and make the same mistake I did. read more

AS A VERIFIED CUSTOMER LET ME INFORM THE PUBLIC OF MT EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PLACE! I recently purchased a puppy from this place, and as pet land goers know these puppies cost within the thousands so obviously if anything were to happen within the first WEEK! Of having their puppy there would be some sort of repercussions for buying a puppy. One the puppy I purchased was in a cage with two huge dogs that were as the associate said "playing" but any pet owner knows what playing looks like and those dogs were man handling that Poor puppy. I ended up purchasing him but the associate said I couldn't take him home because they needed to be sure he was okay? Okay first RED FLAG. When I finalized the rather costly deal. I was not prepared for the dog they sold me. He was weak and I'll from coming from a puppy mill. He didn't even survive a month! PETLAND IS A SCAM AND IS NOT RETURNING ANY OF MY CALLS. This place promised my dog was healthy and would live long. But instead he only lasted a week! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS ESTABLISH THAT DOES DECEPTIVE SALES and forces you into crazy lending practices.
