This is a great pet shop lots of fish to pick from, and lots of plants. Also a good selection of hardscape.

Neon tetras are NINE DOLLARS EACH and not a single one of the eight we bought survived the first night in a brand new, conditioned, temperature controlled aquarium. These fish were under a dollar each in 2020. The service was friendly enough, but this establishment literally robs people. read more

I love coming here for the variety of plants and the staff are always super nice and friendly. They have a bad MTS infestation in their plant tanks, though :( if you buy plants make sure to clean them thoroughly and always quarantine your fish, guys! After seeing a decent amount of good reviews on google. I thought we'd give them a shot. I Bought a fish from them yesterday. Our water parameters are perfect, however we noticed the new fish was breathing heavily and hiding. The fish was clearly stressed out, we moved them over to a quarantine tank to hopefully help it and the fish died this morning. Now I'm praying the rest of my fish don't get sick, like other reviews have stated. They ask everyone for their water parameters, I think they need to start checking their own. read more

Great store, setup my first ever 90 gallon saltwater tank which is more difficult than a freshwater tank. Finally got it going four months ago and my fish and snails are doing awesome. Super knowledgeable staff. read more

Aquarium Adventure has improved since I've last been there. The terrarium plants have gotten more varied in types and are in pretty good conditions. The display tanks have improved and the animals look better. Everything is organized and in order. read more

The place was clean and tidy, almost every employee greeted and offered help. The pets seemed happy and healthy. I personally dont like such small cages for dogs but that's just my opinion. On the other hand the cages were clean and well kept. Dogs did look happy and playful. The aquarium is really nice and big. Alot of collection ti choose from if you are in to fishes. All in all a good place, kinda mini zoo. Definitely recommended. read more

They advertise terrarium supplies, but they really don't offer much. Their terrarium plants are nearly all dead. They don't have orchid bark. On and on. Don't bother if you're in the market for terrarium stuff. read more

Huge variety of fish and all of the fish are well taken care of. The fishtanks are always clean and the fish are always in good condition. The fish are all a reasonable price and are all great. This establishment sells a big variety of Cichlids which is great since I keep Cichlids myself. All of the Cichlids and fish I've bought have lasted and did not die immediately. Employees are nice and also offer good fish information. If you take care of fish you should definitely come here. read more

When I saw the staff use water from another tank to get the pristella tetras we chose I should have known to refuse the fish outright. Devastating mistake. Fast forward two weeks later we have an ich outbreak in our tank. I lost my best three angels and a couple other fish which were valued over $100 total. I will never shop here again. If you see little white dots on the fish, even one, DO NOT BUY ANY fish even from other tanks. read more

Been dealing with Aquarium Adventure for 10 years now buying fish and feeder fish from them. Have spent tons of money at this store. I bought feeder fish on the 27 of may by the 28 all my fish were dead . I drove to the store told what had happened they said to check my water. When I asked if they checked there water in the feeder fish tank. I gotta responses that I wasn't expecting. The person told me we don't have problems with are fish we don't need to.They told me to call the corporate number so I did. I called the corporate after several times they never called me back. So I called back the store talked to the store manager Paul . Talked to him about the problem that I have been having. He told me that's the risk I take for buying feeder fish. That's a great responses after spending a lot of money with the store and they don't care . Great customer service! read more

Knowledgeable staff. Decent plant selection. Little expensive but nothing crazy. We make a trip every few months and just see what's available. Mostly feeders and plants for live stuff we get. Axolotls don't look quite up to par for me but we also "snobs" about it: environment isn't ideal, overpopulated tanks, but it's a breeder/seller setup not a maintenance set up ‍ read more

In all honesty, while this place has great stockings and the staff seem to be informed about fish care, there is a suspicious amount of dead livestock of all sizes and the prices are rather high. However, I definitely would probably visit again. read more

Well I have shopped at aquarium adventure before. it's an okay place. I think some of their livestock on both saltwater and freshwater are a bit overpriced. I don't go to Hoffman estates that often and you can save if you get a membership about 20%. On livestock aquarium supplies, fish food etc. It seems like they are up in maintaining their fish tanks and keeping their fish and livestock healthy even their aquatic plants as well as their saltwater fish and corals and amenities. It's just that I've been to other fish places that are much better than this in the Chicagoland and suburban areas that I can think of. Other than that, it's not bad but it's nothing spectacular or excellent. Do come here if you are in the Hoffman estates area or the northwest suburbs near Schaumburg, IL if you are going to get into the hobby of aquarium fish keeping both saltwater and freshwater. I have been in the hobby for the past 8 years. prior to that as a kid it was on and off with this hobby since my folks didn't have enough money to spend on the equipment the food and the supplies of maintenance. read more

We came for a couple plants and a snail. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The kids really enjoyed seeing all the neat displays.

I've been coming here since around 2008. I don't visit this store all that often, but, usually a few times a year. I recall back around 2009 I was given some very poor advice about some fish I purchased. I clearly let the person I was working with know I had a freshwater tank with so and so fish already in it. I let him know I was looking to add another couple fish. Well, he seemed knowledgeable and showed me some cool fish. I ended up buying a couple that he said would be good for my tank. Sadly, the fish died within a couple days. He had sold me brackish water fish; not freshwater fish! So ok, that is my fault. 99% of the time before I get any pet I research extensively myself. But, this store I had just started going to back then, and it seemed like a well setup store and they seemed to know what they were doing. Well, just another example of why you should never listen to any store employee. Especially at pet stores when animals lives are on the line. If you want a pet, research first! So, moving on. I kept coming here for things I needed from time to time. I've got a few more fish from here, some crickets, and some other random items. Recently, I purchased a few fish for my tank and got great service, although very slow. It took a while for the employee to bag my fish, but, the fish I got were great. I asked for 3 platys from the 'random platy' tank. There were a few types of colors and looks to the fish in the tank. The 3 fish I got all looked very different. So thanks for not just scooping up the first 3 you could catch that all looked the same. Much better that you took your time and got me a nice variety of colors! The fish I purchased a few days ago have lived. Thankfully. I did notice a good amount of dead fish in all the tanks. I was worried there may have been some illness going around that may spread to my home tank. But, seems good so far. All in all, they are as good or better than most other fish stores I have been to. If you want saltwater fish, they have some, but, I prefer to go to saltwater specific stores for those fish. Just remember to do your research and know everything you need to before you go to buy any pet! read more

I purchased a 150 gallon tank and stand from Aquarium Adventures. Next came how to get this 6 foot long 300+ pound beast home and set up. It also had to go i the space of my current 65 gallon tank which meant emtyping the old tank, cathing the fish and then bringing the new tank to teh basement! NIck and Courtney came to do all the work. Amazingly nick and this small lady got the stand and 150 down the stairs safely. They did an amazing job af making it all work. Great people fun to chat and learn from. They did a spectacular job and I would give them 6 stars. The only deduction was that the office could be a little faster at getting things scheduled and billing in place. read more

This is an aquarists' wet dream! They sell more types of fish and live plants, tanks, filters than any other place I know of. From the beginner, to the casual hobbyist to the serious saltwater types, this is the place to come. Huge, impressive tanks, monstrous size, colorful tropical fish. Tank after tank of live plants, even coral!. Huge inventory of tanks and lights, filters, etc. There is a regular pet shop on the other side with cats, dogs, birds, etc. Bring the kids and make a field trip of it. read more

This place is a unique for a fish store (compared to petco) but always has near death fish. My boyfriend and I were there on Saturday because we decided we wanted to look at their puppies. We bought 2 flowerhorns and they both died within 48 hours. We did everything and bought everything they recommended. When it came to returning the fish, they said they would refund to our card and then refused when we went into the store. So we're stuck with a store credit and no fish to use it on. read more

Awful customer service. I live nearby so I go there often. I even joined their fish club. If you're looking to buy fish, forget about it. this is the worst fish store I have ever been to, I had a horrible experience here, what kind of unbelievable management, the manager at this store was following my friends and I as we were looking for a new fish tank, after about 20 minutes of her staring at us and following us throughout the store, she confronted us and said "I don't mean for it to seem as if i am following you guys around, but you guys are kind of sketchy" what kind of management says that, if I were her I wouldn't have asked if I needed any help looking for something, I don't plan on going here ever again, I am even planning to return my items tomorrow morning. edit: it has been 9 days since i have been here after returning my items, 7 business says and i still don't have my money back, i am NEVER going here again, i do not recommend read more

As far as the store goes I have not had any issues BUT this review is for their tank cleaning service that comes out to you to clean your tank! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!! And I mean that very literally. The lady who schedules appts is a ding bat! I have wasted numerous days sitting around waiting for the service guy to arrive and never shows and I'll finally message asking if theyre still coming and she'll reply that SHE FORGOT-sometimes she forgot even if I messaged her a day or two prior to confirm; which I had to start doing bc I noticed her "forgetting" has become a trend. Waiting around like from noon to 3 or 4 pm for nothing, multiple times. Also, many times they came soo late that they had to do a quick cleaning and of course still charged me full price and the tank looked like crap a week later. Sometimes they would show up out of nowhere, I had no idea I was on the schedule! It was a literal shit show! She is also saying now that I switched my service that I have an outstanding balance from June- while there is a tiny chance that I may have not had paid that visit, it seems peculiar that she would message me about it six months later conveniently after I switched service- so just make sure you keep your statements if you choose to ignore my review and take a chance with them. The reason I'm giving two stars is bc the store itself is fine and the techs who come out do usually do a good job. read more

Avoid Avoid Avoid. Had a well established tank that was doing good for months went here to grab a few fish to add and man was it a mistake. the fish were 4x the price of any other local fish store. This place is really neat to visit but the health of the fish are not good. Went there on Friday to buy fish. I live an hour north. I bought 12 fish. Two days later all but 4 have died. Kudos to this place for the wide variety of healthy fish to choose from. Shame on this place for putting small pets in extreme peril at the hands of unsupervised children. The problem is the open-top, "interactive" tanks the mice, gerbils, and rabbits are displayed in. Using the wheels they had found in the tank, I watched two boys about 8 years in age violently beating--and presumably injuring and/or killing--mice in one of the tanks. Sadly, no parent or store employee was on hand to prevent the carnage. I shooed the kids away, but never located their parents. I alerted the staff to the violence, and was assured that someone would take care of the situation. I strongly suspect the boys wandered into the store on their own, and that no parents were around to supervisethem. It thus seems that Aquarium Adventure needs a "no unsupervised-kids" policy, as well as closer supervision of the small-pets tanks. I won't patronize this store again. Clearly the pets sold here are just commodities, and that protecting the animals' well being is too expensive to bother with--at least as far as the non-$1000 dogs go. read more

Do not go here for saltwater fish. Their prices are double to triple compared to elsewhere for fish. Also look very closely at the fish as most have ick or velvet so you'll probably destroy your tank buying one. The staff are idiots and rude. I heard 1 guy telling a beginner in saltwater that he could have his tank cycled in a day. That I want to see. He must have watched too much of the show "Tanked". Will never go here or recommend them. STAY AWAY read more

We purchased our initial aquarium set up from them in 2019. Over the year, we lost a number of fish. Decided to re-stock and went in on August 19, 2020 and purchased 7 new fish. TWO died within the first 48 hours and were replaced (water sample was good). THREE more have now died. They don't seem to have very healthy fish these days. Maybe the fish have COVID-19??? read more

I called the aquarium to be sure they had the fish I was looking for before driving 30 minutes and using expensive gas. When we arrived, I asked about the fish and was told my conversation was a miscommunication. The person on the phone assured me they had plenty of this type of fish in various sizes ranging from $10 to $100 each. Upon arrival, they had none. What a waste of time, gas and I'll never go back. read more

It would take a lot to get me to buy fish from here ever again. On the surface, this place looks great, the tanks are normally well kept and very appealing to look at. The plant selection is great, hardware selection is great, food is great and most of that I would buy. However, this place is frequently understaffed so service is often lacking, a little pricey for a chain store, and the employee's are just not that knowledable....sorry, it irks me to educate store staff. As for being pricey, yes, its probably a step up from Petsmart but its not THAT big of a step to justify boutique prices. I've also been increasingly dissapointed in the quality of fish I've gotten. Fish that die just too quickly, getting home only to find the wrong type of fish and management that doesn't want to work with you to get a resolution (I was here yesterday, can tell you exaclty who helped me, at what time, have the credit card I used for the purchess, AND brought the dead fish in. You seriously can't help me here???) Sure, this is a nice place to come in, look around, maybe picke up some fish food but I normally stop there. read more

I've been back on several occasions to look around, take advantage of coupons, and on one occasion to buy fish. I'm pretty sure the fish I bought brought parasites to one of my tanks and I had a major die-off, so I don't think I'll get fish again, but I still enjoy looking at all the tanks since they have a massive selection of freshwater and saltwater species. I do like the big selection of plants that they have as well as supplies. I think there's still definite improvement to be had there as I've noticed some young and less than knowledgeable staff that tend to ignore me when I actually do want help. And that cranky cashier is still there. read more
