After seeing a decent amount of good reviews on google. I thought we'd give them a shot. I Bought a fish from them yesterday. Our water parameters are perfect, however we noticed the new fish was breathing heavily and hiding. The fish was clearly stressed out, we moved them over to a quarantine tank to hopefully help it and the fish died this morning. Huge variety of fish and all of the fish are well taken care of. The fishtanks are always clean and the fish are always in good condition. The fish are all a reasonable price and are all great. This establishment sells a big variety of Cichlids which is great since I keep Cichlids myself. All of the Cichlids and fish I've bought have lasted and did not die immediately. I bought feeder fish on the 27 of may by the 28 all my fish were dead . I drove to the store told what had happened they said to check my water. When I asked if they checked there water in the feeder fish tank. I gotta responses that I wasn't expecting. The person told me we don't have problems with are fish we don't need to.They told me to call the corporate number so I did. I called the corporate after several times they never called me back. So I called back the store talked to the store manager Paul . Talked to him about the problem that I have been having. He told me that's the risk I take for buying feeder fish. Well I have shopped at aquarium adventure before. it's an okay place. I think some of their livestock on both saltwater and freshwater are a bit overpriced. I don't go to Hoffman estates that often and you can save if you get a membership about 20%. On livestock aquarium supplies, fish food etc. It seems like they are up in maintaining their fish tanks and keeping their fish and livestock healthy even their aquatic plants as well as their saltwater fish and corals and amenities. It's just that I've been to other fish places that are much better than this in the Chicagoland and suburban areas that I can think of. Other than that, it's not bad but it's nothing spectacular or excellent. Do come here if you are in the Hoffman estates area or the northwest suburbs near Schaumburg, IL if you are going to get into the hobby of aquarium fish keeping both saltwater and freshwater. I have been in the hobby for the past 8 years. prior to that as a kid it was on and off with this hobby since my folks didn't have enough money to spend on the equipment the food and the supplies of maintenance. read more

I've been coming here since around 2008. I don't visit this store all that often, but, usually a few times a year. I recall back around 2009 I was given some very poor advice about some fish I purchased. I clearly let the person I was working with know I had a freshwater tank with so and so fish already in it. I let him know I was looking to add another couple fish. Well, he seemed knowledgeable and showed me some cool fish. I ended up buying a couple that he said would be good for my tank. Sadly, the fish died within a couple days. He had sold me brackish water fish; not freshwater fish! So ok, that is my fault. 99% of the time before I get any pet I research extensively myself. But, this store I had just started going to back then, and it seemed like a well setup store and they seemed to know what they were doing. Well, just another example of why you should never listen to any store employee. Especially at pet stores when animals lives are on the line. If you want a pet, research first! So, moving on. I kept coming here for things I needed from time to time. I've got a few more fish from here, some crickets, and some other random items. Recently, I purchased a few fish for my tank and got great service, although very slow. It took a while for the employee to bag my fish, but, the fish I got were great. I asked for 3 platys from the 'random platy' tank. There were a few types of colors and looks to the fish in the tank. The 3 fish I got all looked very different. So thanks for not just scooping up the first 3 you could catch that all looked the same. Much better that you took your time and got me a nice variety of colors! The fish I purchased a few days ago have lived. Thankfully. I did notice a good amount of dead fish in all the tanks. I was worried there may have been some illness going around that may spread to my home tank. But, seems good so far. All in all, they are as good or better than most other fish stores I have been to. If you want saltwater fish, they have some, but, I prefer to go to saltwater specific stores for those fish. I purchased a 150 gallon tank and stand from Aquarium Adventures. Next came how to get this 6 foot long 300+ pound beast home and set up. It also had to go i the space of my current 65 gallon tank which meant emtyping the old tank, cathing the fish and then bringing the new tank to teh basement! NIck and Courtney came to do all the work. Amazingly nick and this small lady got the stand and 150 down the stairs safely. They did an amazing job af making it all work. Great people fun to chat and learn from. They did a spectacular job and I would give them 6 stars. This place is a unique for a fish store (compared to petco) but always has near death fish. My boyfriend and I were there on Saturday because we decided we wanted to look at their puppies. We bought 2 flowerhorns and they both died within 48 hours. We did everything and bought everything they recommended. When it came to returning the fish, they said they would refund to our card and then refused when we went into the store. So we're stuck with a store credit and no fish to use it on. read more

As far as the store goes I have not had any issues BUT this review is for their tank cleaning service that comes out to you to clean your tank! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!! And I mean that very literally. The lady who schedules appts is a ding bat! I have wasted numerous days sitting around waiting for the service guy to arrive and never shows and I'll finally message asking if theyre still coming and she'll reply that SHE FORGOT-sometimes she forgot even if I messaged her a day or two prior to confirm; which I had to start doing bc I noticed her "forgetting" has become a trend. Waiting around like from noon to 3 or 4 pm for nothing, multiple times. Also, many times they came soo late that they had to do a quick cleaning and of course still charged me full price and the tank looked like crap a week later. Sometimes they would show up out of nowhere, I had no idea I was on the schedule! It was a literal shit show! She is also saying now that I switched my service that I have an outstanding balance from June- while there is a tiny chance that I may have not had paid that visit, it seems peculiar that she would message me about it six months later conveniently after I switched service- so just make sure you keep your statements if you choose to ignore my review and take a chance with them. Kudos to this place for the wide variety of healthy fish to choose from. Shame on this place for putting small pets in extreme peril at the hands of unsupervised children. The problem is the open-top, "interactive" tanks the mice, gerbils, and rabbits are displayed in. Using the wheels they had found in the tank, I watched two boys about 8 years in age violently beating--and presumably injuring and/or killing--mice in one of the tanks. Sadly, no parent or store employee was on hand to prevent the carnage. I shooed the kids away, but never located their parents. I alerted the staff to the violence, and was assured that someone would take care of the situation. I strongly suspect the boys wandered into the store on their own, and that no parents were around to supervisethem. It thus seems that Aquarium Adventure needs a "no unsupervised-kids" policy, as well as closer supervision of the small-pets tanks. I won't patronize this store again. Clearly the pets sold here are just commodities, and that protecting the animals' well being is too expensive to bother with--at least as far as the non-$1000 dogs go. read more

Do not go here for saltwater fish. Their prices are double to triple compared to elsewhere for fish. Also look very closely at the fish as most have ick or velvet so you'll probably destroy your tank buying one. The staff are idiots and rude. We purchased our initial aquarium set up from them in 2019. Over the year, we lost a number of fish. Decided to re-stock and went in on August 19, 2020 and purchased 7 new fish. TWO died within the first 48 hours and were replaced (water sample was good). THREE more have now died. They don't seem to have very healthy fish these days. It would take a lot to get me to buy fish from here ever again. On the surface, this place looks great, the tanks are normally well kept and very appealing to look at. The plant selection is great, hardware selection is great, food is great and most of that I would buy. However, this place is frequently understaffed so service is often lacking, a little pricey for a chain store, and the employee's are just not that knowledable....sorry, it irks me to educate store staff. As for being pricey, yes, its probably a step up from Petsmart but its not THAT big of a step to justify boutique prices. I've also been increasingly dissapointed in the quality of fish I've gotten. Fish that die just too quickly, getting home only to find the wrong type of fish and management that doesn't want to work with you to get a resolution (I was here yesterday, can tell you exaclty who helped me, at what time, have the credit card I used for the purchess, AND brought the dead fish in. I've been back on several occasions to look around, take advantage of coupons, and on one occasion to buy fish. I'm pretty sure the fish I bought brought parasites to one of my tanks and I had a major die-off, so I don't think I'll get fish again, but I still enjoy looking at all the tanks since they have a massive selection of freshwater and saltwater species. I do like the big selection of plants that they have as well as supplies. I think there's still definite improvement to be had there as I've noticed some young and less than knowledgeable staff that tend to ignore me when I actually do want help.
