My first impression when walking into Petland Canada was WOW it's HUGE! From what I could see they had something for every pet. My pets are of the fish variety, In the far left corner of the store is the section for freshwater fish. Stock was low at the moment, so there wasn't much to see, I'm excited to go back when they get their next shipment of fish. I did notice that their prices are slightly higher than other pet stores. We were sold a one gallon fish tank for our 8 year old. Our fish died after a few days. We have since purchased numerous fish for the tank and all have died. We went to another pet store who advised that our little tank is too small to sustain fish life. If we had known this we most certainly would have purchased a larger tank. When I called the store I was told there was nothing they could do and would not provide a full credit towards a larger tank. They said they would speak to manager though and call me back. They never called me back. I called today again and they said there is nothing they can do. I asked why they did not mention the fact that our tank is not suitable for fish particularly for beginners. The lady said they are trained to sell all fish tank sizes. Seriously shady to sell us a tank with 3 fish when you know that the fish won't survive. I guess you are counting on us to return every couple of weeks to buy more fish. The manager at Port Coquitlam office calls me and says Petland corporate will not allow full credit on tank and offered me $5 off next tank. No thanks. I will be buying a new tank from another pet store. read more

Hi everyone, I do not recommend this place. Some staff is friendly but not all of them. Specially one of them whose name is Alan, who is assistant manager. Honestly she potentially force everyone to buy more and more supply. This is not good policy !I remember when I wanted to buy pet, she said first off you need to buy cage which was 150$, supply, and then pet!!! They are great at the business aspect. Horrid people at being responsible animal caregivers. I cannot make comments on all the animals they sell but if the level of "care" they provide their "adoptable" hedgehogs is reflective of their care of any other animals, RUN! Never go back. DO NOT purchase an animal from this store. No health guarantee pre-adoption, no veterinary records or proof of health exams, unable to answer the most basic of care questions about hedgehogs and won't let you speak to anybody in a higher position than cashier/associate. Can't even sex a hedgehog between girl and boy and believe me as a person who has mothered 9 hedgehogs, it is VERY easy to sex a baby hedgehog. If a healthy hedgehog is what you seek, please just reach out to your local ethical registered breeder. There are two in BC, and several more across Canada that can air ship your baby to you safely. Cats and dogs are facing an overpopulation issue, hence it is encouraged to adopt not shop for them. But for exotics like hedgehogs, it is extremely irresponsible to get one from just anywhere. There is a fine like between supoorting backyard breeding and rescuing a hedgehog in distress. read more

Learned a lot about cat food from a young woman working there - no pressure and very informative. The cat food she recommended has improved my cat's coat. The downside is that she likes the new food so much more and is always hungry now! Near the front their have hamsters, and other small rodents kids can pick up and look at. I love the idea - but wonder how much it stresses out these little guys. read more

I've been in this store a couple times, and although I can't say I had a bad experience personally, I always have an uncomfortable feeling about pet stores that sell puppies, kittens, etc that have been bred for profit. After doing some homework on the subject, I found out that Petland is accused of being one of the worst offenders for selling puppy mill puppies. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27822309/ Their website claims that these accusations are unfounded. http://www.petland.ca/AboutPetland/PetlandPetFacts.htm (throwing that in there to be fair) I know of several people that have questioned the staff about their puppies, and were not given clear answers as to where they came from. Also, their fees of $1000 and up are hardly "adoption" fees. I would be happy to see this store sell rescues instead and quit perpetuating the impulse-buying crowd that can't resist that "cute puppy in the window"....which often winds up in a shelter 6 months later. People that insist on getting a purebred puppy should seek a knowledgeable, discriminating breeder. read more

I just adopted a young fully grown male hedgehog. Named Carl, he is the sweetest. And thanks to an employee Travis, I now know that I can help an animal be happy again. Carl had a tragic past and Travis was very full hearted towards him. Everyone loved him. So I made him his own instagram. The best pet store in metro vancouver! We adopted a green-cheeked conure from this location. All of the animals here are healthy looking and well cared for by staff. They take extra care with the birds to hand-tame most of them. Taryn (not sure how to spell his name) was very helpful with the adoption process and spent over an hour giving us tips for our new little bird. He has 2 green-cheeks of his own and knows so much about them. We returned for the black friday sale and everything was 20% off. Small animals were 50% off. We ended up leaving with a 1-month old male turquoisine grass parakeet. Jessi helped us find all the best deals on birds toys and fish supplies. Overall the store is well organized with a good layout. All the staff are friendly and really know their stuff. The animals come from trusted breeders and are all vet-checked before they arrive at the store. When you adopt an animal there is an interview process to make sure that you are a good fit for the animal. read more

I come here often to restock my guinea pig supplies at home and in the meantime play with the other little animals. This place used to have quite a lot of puppies but recently all have been removed. The staff are friendly and the store is open late, nothing to complain. There are plenty of small animals like piggies and hamsters, bunnies, birds, and cats. I hate this place... Animals shouldn't be sold in stores. I came here today with my sister because it was conveniently in the area (poor decision on my part) to pick up dog treats. We have rescued cage free rabbits at home and coming into this store was the saddest site I've ever witnessed. Several baby rabbits crammed into small pens which were filthy and needed to be cleaned. We noticed one rabbit pen the water dish was empty and went to notify one of the staff. The young guy walked towards the area but we later discovered he NEVER actually refilled the water bowl. I was furious as this same staff member had approached us a couple times while we were looking for dog treats and talked to us after we had asked him to refill the rabbits' water dish. I had to physically grab the water bowl and walk to the back staff room and knock and waited a good 5 mins before another staff member came so I could ask to have the dish refilled. She returned it to the pen and the poor little babies ran to the dish and eagerly started drinking water. I understand this business sells pets. But if you're going to be in this business (which I highly disapprove of) at least educate your staff and ensure there is always someone supervising the animals when customers are interacting with them. I had to stop a little kid from being too aggressive with one of the baby bunnies. He was pushing it into the little plastic hide away cave and jamming toys into the small space. They were terrified and no one was there to stop him. Obviously we dropped the treats we were planning to purchase and left. My family won't be spending our money here because that would only support a business that makes animal neglect possible. My biggest regret of the day was walking into this place. read more

I'm glad that they have removed the dogs from their stores, as they were obviously supplied by puppy mills. It still sets me off as the rodents and birds are constantly being touched by small children who do not know how to properly hold these creatures and they are falling from tall heights. It also probably agitates these animals; which, is never a good thing to have when you buy a pet. If you want to buy a rodent or bird (especially bunnies, rats and trainable birds) go to breeders and do not support mills and give profit to large chain stores that inhumanely treat their animals for profit. :-( read more

I decided to drop by Pet land yesterday to look for a drawf roborovski hamster and was pleasantly surprised by the interactive petting zone. Children were looking at the display cases and eagerly reaching down to pet and hold a variety of critters. Unfortunately, I had the chance to witness a child become very aggressive with several hamsters. Flipping over their bridge hideouts, where the delicate balls of nocturnal fur were sleeping. He reaches his hand down and startles them as they scurry away in fear. The boy even crammed the pick-up buckets into the piles of hamsters to try and pick up anything he could. I had to remind him to be gentle as i walked away, as it was bothering me. I did hear a store worker try to educate the child to be respectful of the animals if they were hiding. However, while looking at some birds I glanced over at the hamster display and I see that the young boy has slipped a hamster into his jacket pocket! I made sure to look straight at him and mouth "NO that is not okay". He then looks very guilty and puts the hamster back into the display case and pretends it doesn't happen. I'm still in shock at this point since there were no workers to witness this. This child's mother was walking around the store and not paying attention to her son. Meanwhile the employees were talking to customers, filling up critter food bowls, or talking amongst themselves. I continue to keep my eye on the boy while browsing, concerned about what he will do unsupervised. And once again i see that he has put another hamster in his jacket pocket!!! I quickly walk towards this boy and call him over to talk to me, as to not cause a scene. He puts the hamster back into the case and walks over with his head down. I say, "You should not be stealing, thats not okay. Putting a hamster in your pocket is not where they belong. Do you have anymore hamsters in your pocket?". This young boy shakes his head and replies "no". In hindsight i should have made sure to check his pockets. He runs off after his mother who left the store. I couldn't imagine if he had taken home one of the poor hamsters in his pocket without food or proper care. I really wished the petting area had a designated supervisor to avoid situations like this from happening. This was a very disappointing experience for me, please try and avoid this from happening again Petland! Overall it was a friendly environment with a bounty of animal treats and quality pet supplies. Got my ferret from the store; turns out she has ear mites (has had them for some time). Don't advise getting pets from this location; vet informed us that let's generally from this locaiton are in pretty bad shape. read more

My husband complained that when walking out of the store, he was loaded up with dog food and his dog. There were lots of staff available but NO ONE offered to assist him - although fellow customers did offer to assist. Bosleys always offers to assist. Petland has lost our business. It seems the staff at Petland only care about sales - not what happens after you pay and depart from the cash register. Bosleys has better prices anyways. read more

My favourite pet store, all the staff are so kind and always helpful. I recently bought a 55 Gallon Fluval fish tank and I couldn't be happier with the service of the two employees that helped me, Nicole and Spencer. The price was unbelievable, I saved $100 just by being a member! The tank looks beautiful and is in great condition, can't wait to put fish in it! I will always enjoy going back to Petland for all my pet's needs. read more

Great store. Very knowledgeable staff, and all animals are well cared for. Compare the animal care to any other pet store around, and they are the best. I have mixed feelings about this store simply because I don't think the animals should be accessed by just anyone and there should be more supervision in that area alone. However, the staff are usually very helpful and knowledgeable. Kim was awesome in the fish department. She gathered all my supplies for my first tank as I had my baby with me in the stroller. She spent ample amount of time explaining what I needed and my different options and I felt really confident that I could maybe keep a fish or two alive. I won't write a libelous review because this company has no shortage of cash. My observations on more than one occasion: * Macaw Parrot housed in a cattery, multiple level cage. The bird was picking off and eating the plastic that covered all the cage mesh. Again, this cage is for kittens, not large exotic birds. I asked the manager about it and was dismissed with "Well, he seems to like it in there." * Rodents including rats displayed in open bin-style habitats right next to birds such as budgies & cockatiels. Because these displays are accessible to the public, I saw children & adults putting rodents with birds and vice versa. * Little to no supervision of customers handling animals in open displays. People were picking up animals in unsafe ways, not to mention the issue of cross-contamination. Could be a health risk for the critters or humans. * Mixing of new & old world birds. Anyone who understands avian husbandry knows not to mix species as some bacteria & viruses are asymptomatic in one species, but may be deadly to others. * An elderly woman accompanying me was encouraged to purchase a young African Grey Parrot. The bird would likely out-live her by sixty years. One can draw their own conclusion as to whether this is an ethical sales practice. read more
