I love to dance (non-professionally) and learning different types of cultural dances so i looked into dance classes in NYC. After checking out a few other sites, I found this place through Yelp and their website (Thank you other Yelpers!). Quickly signed up for month of classes and went to my first class the very same night. Absolutely blown away! The instructor, Tehani, and her business partner, Kim, are both welcoming, kind, and passionate about Tahitian dance. They patiently take you through each step and each week review what was done before while building on with new choreography and emphasis on different parts of the dance moves. The other dancers have all been quite friendly and you can feel the spirit of camaraderie and island sentiment in the room. I'm one month in and happily hooked. I highly recommend you take one class or maybe even sign up for a month and see where the spirit of this dance and the instructor take you.

Generally, the studio seems like a nice neighborhood dance studio for kids who like dance as a hobby. My instructor teaches a preteen ballet class before jazz, and the students seem nice and happy. I've met the owner, and I haven't seen her teach, but she did seem friendly and dedicated. Mostly, I wanted to alert people to the existence of the jazz class. Bill is a great teacher: he takes your development seriously, but creates an environment in which you're comfortable trying new things. And he has some great stories. The class itself is a good workout, and for combinations, Bill's choreography is accessible, but really stylish, so beginners can learn the same things as everyone else and look cool, and advanced students can push to get the lines and pacing exactly right and feel challenged while still having fun. The class size thus far has been TINY, so you have room to move, and you don't feel weird asking questions.

I signed up for a 45 minute session, and my instructor, Mimi Hilarie cancelled on me the morning off. When I rescheduled, I walked into the school with the lights off behind the glass for check in and instead was surrounded by kids and teenagers running the place. With all respect to the teenagers and students holding down the fort, the experience is stressful and awful for a new student not knowing where to go. I was late to my lesson despite being there early because no room was listed in the confirmation email and there was no way of checking when you get there. I had to flag one of the student that was buzzing people in to help.

I lost a lot a few years ago due to chronic health issues one of which affected my nervous system for years. In the past being unaware, I would try to go to dance but brain issues prevented me from being fully present in it, and finally I gave up when it got worse. As I found out my issues, I began healing and decided to return to dancing as a way to continue that. And now, as my body has started to regained health I can finally enjoy it. Salsa salsa gave me a place to go after I lost a lot. It gave me friends and a community and such wonderful, kind instructors that unknowingly are helping me heal. Very grateful for it.
