I haven't been back since my college days but wanted to see what's up. Plus, I wanted to stretch $20 for lunch and dinner. Other than increased pricing due to inflation (still cheap eats), nothing has changed. It's a divey, old-skool rotisserie and hofbrau resto. It's cash only. The 3 pc ribs were tough and dry, seasoned with s&p and no other distinct seasoning from what I can tell. The tangy bbq sauce was one-note, watery yet starchy so I'm glad I requested it on the side. Not great BUT, it fed me for lunch and dinner so mission accomplished. We stopped in on a whim while walking by. My SO went for the ribs and salad and I had the polish sausage sandwich and a side macaroni salad. A baked potato and a roll also comes with the ribs dinner so all things considered it was a ton of food for the price. The bread was nice and soft with a good crust, veggies were fresh, and the mac salad was very good. Cold and tangy, very classic. Otherwise it was just ok, IMO. BBQ sauce was kinda thin and lacking flavor, sausage was average. Nothing super standout, but it will fill you up for sure. Not a lot of inside seating to speak of and parking is an obvious challenge in the area. They were super busy even at 2:30/3pm on a weekend so clearly it's popular but I wouldn't go back. I've go to Pete's a couple times a month, because I have business nearby and there aren't any other options for passable food nearby. Pete's BBQ is good, but not great. If you grew up eating BBQ in Texas or Kansas City or another state big on BBQ don't expect any BBQ nostalgia cravings you may have to be satisfied here. The sides are good, but no french fries The only bread is one roll that is not heated at all. The people who are currently ruinin....er running, San Francisco know nothing about the restaurant business so they passed a silly rule that the pats of wrapped butter restaurants like this give you have to remain refrigerated until they're given to customers! So, you get a pat of cold butter for your cold roll. Besides, I use it on my potato. Because they're not exactly generous with them. I'll take those two slices of cheap white bread that comes with BBQ in the South and Midwest any day. All-in-All, for the amount of food you get and the price it's great. Thanks to Gavin the workers are making over $18/hrly, and all they do for you is put your salad on the plate give you a tray and ring it up! Still, they have a tip jar by the register! I grew up eating Pete's BBQ, so I have seen the change over the year. One example is the tiny chickens they now sell and over priced baked potatoes. I understand that prices go up, but the quality shouldn't change, they must remain consistent and true. This place had all the markings of what a good BBQ place would be, a diner like feel, cash only pricing, friendly staff, but unfortunately the food did not live up anywhere to my expectations. I had the ribs dinner, and while it was cheap at around $12-13, the ribs themselves were rather cold. The "BBQ" sauce they put on, was more like a salty BBQ-esque flavor rather than the sweeter sauce I'm used to. It was also quite cartilage heavy and don't as juicy and tender as I'd normally like. The side items were like cafeteria food. The bread was super tough, and not even the ton of butter they put on it could help. The baked potato was fine, and it did benefit quite a bit from the slab of butter thrown on it, but it was nothing special. And the salad was drenched in their Italian like dressing, and was not all that great. Overall a big disappointment considering this place looked like it would be so good. read more

What's not to love about a place that showcases meats spinning in the window. This is a no frills old school eatery. Know what you want when you walk in the door, otherwise the other patrons will give you the "Dang newbie" look. Thankfully they have a menu posted at the door. Don't bring your vegan or vegetarian friends here. The beet salad may be their only option. Don't be fooled by the baked potato. It spit roasted under the spinning meats. All of the wonderful juices coat and marinate the outside to a crispy perfection. I don't know what's in the BBQ sauce but it is sweet and a little tangy. My partner calles it the OMG sauce. With all the designer barbecue in town like Southpaw and 4505, it's hard to see how Pete fits into that artisan landscape. Even Austin's fabled Franklin BBQ had a two-night pop-up at Smokestack earlier this year that apparently made "Soylent Green" look like a country club dance. I guess it doesn't really matter because Pete's is not really a barbecue place despite the name because there's no smoker or rotating rotisserie rack that I could see. Everything's presented cafeteria-style like a Luby's, and frankly that ain't a bad thing if you're not picky about how you want your barbecue. It's solid, finger-sucking eatin' for sure, and I'm pretty sure that's Pete himself carving up the ribs at the beginning of the line. Jamie W. and I had been hanging out at the revitalized north side of Dolores Park when we felt an urge for ribs but nothing that would force us to wait for hipsters to finish their plates. I've never tried Pete's before, but I figured this might do the trick on a Saturday evening where every other eatery was crawling with high-octane twenty-somethings. Pete's definitely doesn't attract them. The target customer base consists of large families who huddle around the chipped formica tables and large guys who order big bags of meat to go. Jamie and I both ordered the $10.79 Spare Rib Dinner where Pete chops up five ribs a plate and ladles on the not-quite barbecue sauce. We pushed our trays down the line where the ladies take over. We each got a baked potato and a big roll with a scoop of butter. Too bad the roll was cold as the butter looked like wallpaper paste when we slathered it on. We each got our own side. Seriously, any place that uses a scissor to cut the ginormous portions they dole out is a-ok in my book. My humble suggestion: bring a date. If she smiles at the sight of rotisserie goodness, she's a keeper. If she gives you her death look, get rid of her. Oh - I'm not done. There is another reason to bring a date. I promise you: she will not finish her food. Chances are your significant other will donate half her chicken to you. So, in essence, if you bring a date you get a half chicken instead of a quarter. Brilliant! If you can't bring a date to a wholesome place like Pete's I guarantee you that you put a rock on that finger and the next thing you know and your ass will be sifting through tofu at Rainbow Grocery or picking up that box of organic produce you now get delivered to your house. They got the best meal ever, roasted chicken, roast beef sandwich, BBQ Ribs, dinner roll soft bread, delicious garden salad, for the best desert- peach cobbler pie.
