3 Piece Rib Plate, sauce on the side w/ baked potato, beet salad, French baguette | $17 (Cash only!)
    Cherylynn N.

Pete's brings IT baaaack... Back in time when 70s bush and 80s mullets were a thing. Pete's Barbeque has been feeding the local community in The Mission since the 70s. I haven't been back since my college days but wanted to see what's up. Plus, I wanted to stretch $20 for lunch and dinner. Other than increased pricing due to inflation (still cheap eats), nothing has changed. It's a divey, old-skool rotisserie and hofbrau resto. It's cash only. (There's a ATM next door at the liquor store). I ordered the $17 Rib Plate w/ baked potato and my choice of salad: beets: https://tinyurl.com/37ukdvwp. It was edible. The 3 pc ribs were tough and dry, seasoned with s&p and no other distinct seasoning from what I can tell. The tangy bbq sauce was one-note, watery yet starchy so I'm glad I requested it on the side. Best part of the plate was the beet salad dressed in a vinaigrette. The food is just how I remembered it being from back in the day. Not great BUT, it fed me for lunch and dinner so mission accomplished. Overall, Pete's may not be Tommy's [Joynt] or Harry's [Hofbrau] but hey, if the food isn't hitting it...you have plenty of other affordable options in The Mission for meal #2! O T H E R N O T E S * Pete's is a cafeteria-style rotisserie and hofbrau resto not a "barbeque" joint. No pit or grill. * Menu: Sandwiches ($6-$11), Dinner Plates ($11.50-$18), and Meats by the pound. --Proteins: Rotisserie chicken, spare ribs, turkey, roast beef, or ham. --Dinner Plates include a nekkid baked potato, choice of salad (mac, coleslaw, bean, or beets) and American-style French bread w/ butter. * Several tables for dine in but recommend taking it to-go. * Difficult street parking.

My friend told me she'd been coming here for years, since she was a kid. There was a line right at 11am when they opened on a Thursday. So had to see what the hype was about. It was nice to check out one of her go to spots. Good portions! I really enjoyed the spare ribs and the chicken was very tender and moist. It came with bread and a salad of your choice. Green salad, macaroni salad, potato salad or a garbanzo bean salad.

Polish Sausage sandwich and a side of Macaroni salad

We stopped in on a whim while walking by. My SO went for the ribs and salad and I had the polish sausage sandwich and a side macaroni salad. A baked potato and a roll also comes with the ribs dinner so all things considered it was a ton of food for the price. The bread was nice and soft with a good crust, veggies were fresh, and the mac salad was very good. Cold and tangy, very classic. Otherwise it was just ok, IMO. BBQ sauce was kinda thin and lacking flavor, sausage was average. Nothing super standout, but it will fill you up for sure. Not a lot of inside seating to speak of and parking is an obvious challenge in the area. They were super busy even at 2:30/3pm on a weekend so clearly it's popular but I wouldn't go back. Cash only.

Seriously delicious. We ordered a whole chicken and it was the best rotisserie chicken we've had in the city! Lasted for three meals! Came with tangy barbecue sauce too. The sandwiches are huge and super fresh.

When my younger brother and I were kids, we loved going to my Aunt Mary's house. The relatives would play Mahjong and get excited about "bbq" which consisted of hot dogs and pork chops on a small charcoal grill! When my brother and I got a little bit older, one of our favorite places was Chili's for their "Chili's...baby back ribs.." Went to Pete's from the first time in high school and decided to visit again. No frills bbq. Awesome good chicken( sorry, don't think it's Mary's organic!) and ribs! It's been around for over 40 years! Cash Only!

My family and I were craving for BBQ. We decided to give this BBQ joint a try. The chicken was very dry. We had to pour the BBQ sauce over the chicken in order to eat it. The ribs had too much fat in them. They don't fall off the bone like some other BBQ places. The macaroni salad tasted pretty good. It tasted better than expected.

This restaurant has been a fixture in this neighborhood since forever but it's only recently that I checked it out. The barbeque aroma from outside is always on point. I ordered a turkey and ham sandwich on sourdough. The bread was surprisingly soft for me. The turkey they have here is cooked fresh everyday. It was juicy and the ham had just the right taste to it and wasn't too greasy.

This place had all the markings of what a good BBQ place would be, a diner like feel, cash only pricing, friendly staff, but unfortunately the food did not live up anywhere to my expectations. I had the ribs dinner, and while it was cheap at around $12-13, the ribs themselves were rather cold. The "BBQ" sauce they put on, was more like a salty BBQ-esque flavor rather than the sweeter sauce I'm used to. It was also quite cartilage heavy and don't as juicy and tender as I'd normally like. The side items were like cafeteria food. The bread was super tough, and not even the ton of butter they put on it could help. The baked potato was fine, and it did benefit quite a bit from the slab of butter thrown on it, but it was nothing special. And the salad was drenched in their Italian like dressing, and was not all that great. Overall a big disappointment considering this place looked like it would be so good.

To celebrate America's 250th birthday, my friends and I decided to stop by Hardwood Bar & Smokery…read moreas it's one of the few BBQ establishments in SF. All seating is bar style with high tables hence the name "Hardwood Bar." The food was okay and I'd much rather go to Fikscue if I'm feeling BBQ next time to be honest. We shared ribs and each of us got an entree. One of my friends often orders from here for delivery and was excited to try it in person so that the food would be hot. Surprisingly, our tri tip and brisket came out slightly cold so it wasn't that different from delivery... The ribs were okay and not the most tender. Our server was great and service was good despite the restaurant being relatively full and served by one person. What I find the most perplexing is how they calculate the "SF mandate" fee and sales tax. I'm local to SF so I'm used to restaurants tacking on this "SF mandate"/"SF healthy mandate" fee, but their calculations just seem a bit off (see receipt). If we're calculating this correctly, 4% of $130.40 should be $5.22 and 8.63% of $130.40 should be $11.25. If you include the SF mandate fee in the tax calculation, then the $11.74 is right (if you include their calculation of the SF mandate fee). I'm not going to argue over a 50 cents or so but it's the principle of it! They should definitively state the actual % of 4.35% they're charging instead of just stating 4%. I mean at scale -- it adds up right? It rubbed me the wrong way for sure.

The brisket is tender, smoky, and always disappeares way too fast. The hot link has perfect snap, the chicken is alwayss juicy, and the bao bun (side of pickled onions) is always a standard on all our orders. The sides, oh the sides, mac & cheese and potato salad are exactly what great BBQ sides should be. Don't forget the cornbread muffins either. And special alert: the brisket chili deserves its own spotlight. This is a family-run operation, and it shows. Great people, great food, and a fantastic addition to our side of the city. My advice: don't sleep on Smokin D's, place the order and always ask for extra BBQ sauce. Thank you, Smokin D's, for keeping San Francisco smoked, sauced, and happy.

Located on the ground floor of the infamous leaning Milennium Tower in San Francisco's Financial District, INTERNATIONAL Smoke was Michael Mina's fine dining barbecue restaurant collaboration with multi-hyphenate entrepreneur Ayesha Curry. I visited this place once, for a small dinner party hosted by Charles Schwab on Tuesday, October 14, 2024. We arrived shortly after 6:35 PM. The atmosphere was modern, but casual and hip, funky with exposed metal accents popping through concrete floors and columns. Evidently, the fully booked days were behind them - despite the place's popularity as a fun, lively eatery with the occasional celebrity spotting, the restaurant was fairly quiet that night and not a single person was at the bar. We were seated in the spacious Atrium with floor to ceiling windows. INTERNATIONAL Smoke was not your traditional barbecue restaurant. They presented a globally-inspired grill-centric carte inspired by the rich heritages of the co-founders. The globetrotting meat dishes highlighted diverse international flame-cooking and smoking traditions. The ambitiously broad menu intended to take diners on a culinary journey around the world, but, instead, delivered a disjointed and scattered passport. Similar to the food offerings, INTERNATIONAL Smoke's drink catalogue featured some rotating crafted cocktails that leaned into global flavours, such as KUNG FU PANDAN ($18) and MIDNIGHT IN OAXACA ($20). Boozy beverages like TICKLE ME PINK ($19), NEGRONI ($19), and the ESPRESSO MARTINI ($20) were enjoyed by some of my tablemates. A couple of us stuck to the ZERO PROOF potables like the BUZZ FREE BEE ($15) and RASPBERRY FIELDS ($12) of which the latter I found to be delightful. Cool ice cubes, too! Below are a few of the dishes that we ordered: DOUBLE DUCK WINGS ($28) - I don't eat duck, but my dining mates raved over the tender mango-habanero glazed meat that was falling off the bones. BLACK TRUFFLE CAESAR ($20) - This was a substantial serving, and the sweet onion crema, fried garlic, and truffle vinaigrette all worked well together. ROASTED CAULIFLOWER ($18) - Meh. Perhaps my prejudice against raisins and tehina got in the way of enjoying this STARTER. BLISTERED SHISHITO PEPPERS ($16) - There was not a single blister on any of the peppers, so, unfortunately, the expected smoky, charred flavour was completely absent. MISO YAKI BLACK COD ($48) - This order came with two considerable sized filets of the velvety soft and flaky fish served atop mild shishito peppers sitting in a light ginger dashi broth. It could have just been me, but one of the slices looked a bit undercooked. DUNGENESS CRAB GARLIC NOODLES ($45) - Joanna went with this rich, buttery dish of noodles tossed with wood ear mushrooms, generous portions of Dungeness crab, and heavily garlicked. It was hearty, but I didn't see any bok choy mixed in there, which would have disappointed me if I were Joanna. PERI PERI HALF CHICKEN ($39) - Dustin ordered this dish. The poultry appeared to be well marinated, so I can only assume that the deep, fiery acidic flavour with the pronounced smoky element came through in each bite. Surprisingly, no rants nor raves on this from Dustin...who is usually very opinionated. PORK BELLY FRIED RICE ($17) - Not the worst, but not the best. For the small bowl, this was a major rip off. FRIED BRUSSELS SPROUTS ($15) - Wow, for the price, this should have knocked our socks off, but was pretty lackluster. 8 OZ. CENTER CUT FILET MIGNON ($68) - I ordered this steak plate. The meat was cooked perfectly medium rare, but the taste of the red wine demi and the stuffed portobello mushroom were unremarkable. LEMON OLIVE OIL CAKE ($14) - This did not stray far from the standard olive oil cake, just a touch of lemon added to the cake's flavour + the pluot garnishes. Nothing standout about this, unintriguing. "SMOKED" CHOCOLATE S'MORES ($14) - Not your typical s'mores, more of an elevated take on the campfire classic with a valrhona molten cake sitting atop brûléed marshmallow fluff with a side of graham cracker crumble and a scoop of ice cream. CINNAMON CHURROS ($13) - The accompanying blueberry cheesecake and meyer lemon curd dips were the sole unique elements of this sugar-dusted fried pastry dessert. Without them, this plate would have been underwhelming. Mediocre food at high-end prices aside, table service was friendly. What was all the hype over INTERNATIONAL Smoke? My true guess is that the affiliation with Steph Curry and his basketball friends who would pop in were the big draw...because even with all of the smoking, this place had no fire.

Granted we were a bit late for our reservation, we ended up having to wait another 30-40 mins. The place (2nd floor) is small & awkward. We were all cramped waiting on the stairway and the actual seating area is also fairly small for a busy KBBQ place/big parties. The 8 of us squeezed into a booth with 2 chairs on the side. You can also feel whenever the table next to us got up and stomped/yelled/moved in their chairs-- which was really often. The basic AYCE menu is fairly limited-- esp for the side options. The marinated meats were pretty good as was the tteokbokki. Side & meat portions were alright, but the kicker is having to flag down staff to make sure they put in the order & bring it out. We asked for japchae about 5 times before it actually reached our table towards the end of our meal. The server/manager also told us that he had accidentally brought out 2 bottles of soju for us and that he'd COMP 1 bottle. We didnt notice that he had actually charged us for 2 and comped/subtracted a "third" one. So none were really comped at all. I just realized after we paid and that felt really sketchy.
