I was really excited to go to Peter Thomas today after reading such great reviews. I have naturally curly hair that I blow dry straight. When I spoke with the receptionist to make my appointment I explained my hair type and interest in finding a stylist who was comfortable cutting/ drying my hair. She suggested Helen and reassured me that she was great with curly hair. Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with my hair cut. Helen was pleasant and very nice, but she definitely did not dry my hair well .. AT ALL. I had plans to go out and had to rush home and rewash my hair and blow dry it myself. The cut was mediocre - nothing worth recommending. When I get my hair done, the whole purpose is to not have to do it again the same day myself. Such a disappointment! JESSE. JESSE. JESSE. I swear this man must have pulled rabbits out of hats in another life. The guy works magic with hair. I currently reside in Indiana, and I exclusively go to Jesse for my haircuts. No one else is allowed to touch my hair. Let me back up: I spent the first 24 years of my life hating my hair. It was a mess: frizzy, poofy, sometimes curly, sometimes wavy, kinky, thick, and course. I usually put it up in a tight bun because I just couldn't deal with it most of the time. And then I met Jesse. I was a little skeptical at first. At first glance, the salon seemed a little intimidating. Everyone wore black. I think the first time I met Jesse, he had pink hair and he was adorned with tattoos. I have nothing against tattoos and pink hair, but I don't think I would have initially walked into Peter Thomas on my own without a referral. So there I was, at Jesse's chair. I wanted a haircut that was easy to style, professional but edgy, sexy but low key...all at the same time. Mmm...I think he thought I was nuts when I first met him. He spent nearly two hours on my hair and when he was done, it was easy to style, professional but edgy, sexy but low key...and MORE. I started to get compliments from random people about my hair. And three months later, when it grew out, I was still getting compliments on my hair. Jesse doesn't make you look fabulous for the first three weeks, he cuts your hair in such a way that it continues to grow out flatteringly. I don't know how he does that--magic, I guess. I don't put my hair in a tight bun anymore. I don't try straightening it or pumping a bunch of product into it. My hair currently sits at shoulder/ear length and it naturally curls the way I want it to. When I continue to go back to Jesse, I get the same treatment he gave me the first time--the very best. Being funny, honest, engaging, humble, and an all-around great person are also bonus points on his part. I think Jesse is going to hate me for sending all the high maintenance, difficult people to him, but he really is that amazing. If you have difficult hair, go to this man. Oh hell, if you want to look fabulous, go to this man. Just give him a chance. I am a cheap, grad student with little money to spend, but I know quality and value. So, I decided to go all out on this one. The cut, I mean. Last weekend, I realized that it was now or never with the short-short cut I've been thinking about for ages. It's a big deal, and I wanted someone who would listen, and after going to Peter Thomas once before on a friend recommendation (Nick St. Mary is pretty friggin' gifted), I called in to make a last-minute appointment with him, but he was booked for the day, and this cut couldn't wait. I ended up with Alison, who was an incredible listener, and gave me one hell of a haircut. ...that means I really like it there. Don't let these people who complain about the tight space and bad ambiance fool you. Tried out Peter Thomas for the first time via a living social deal and was assigned to Hillary. After my zig zag uneven Dora bob i received couple months back (shittiest haircut EVER) elsewhere, I went to Peter Thomas with ZERO expectations and just hoping for a simple trim to even out the previous haircut that made me look like a huge retard. Carianne gave me my fabulous short 'do and I love her for it! She's a total sweetheart and really listens to what YOU want in a haircut. She won't force you to do anything you don't want to, but just always makes little suggestions about the different possibilities. OOoo and she works with the hair you've got - meaning she doesn't try and give you a haircut/style that only looks fabulous after paying her a visit. The styles are easily and happily achieved at home as well. And what's absolutely great is whenever I go in, I always come out with a slightly modified but still wonderful haircut. Uh... Helen Wood is freakin' awesome. She made she understood exactly what I wanted and then worked with my color and cowlicks to pull it off. She's also amazingly creative, as evidenced by the times she's worked on me when it's a free for all. She's got a wonderful chair-side manner to boot. I really really want to love this place! I mean I've come three times hoping I will love this place. When I arrive every time I slowly make my way to the bench where you wait. No one talks to me, everyone stares. It makes me a little bit freaked out to be quite honest. They always offer me a beverage, so that's a plus! In all the times I've come for my own cut or color, I've always done the hair modeling. I understand that they are still learning, need to focus, it'll take long. That is no problem with me! I'm not expecting something FANTASMIC. However every time I leave I wish I never came in. The ambiance of the place is a definite one star. Sorry to the people who work there, because they seems fun and cool and artsy, but the place is cold looking, maybe 90's or 80's design....something I've seen from really really low class hair salons. The people working there/students all seem nice, but a little like elitists...I'm to trendy to talk to you. I got tattoos and you are lame...sort of thing. Anyways like I said, they seem nice and fun but only when they interact with each other. I always TRY to be a great model. I am specific but tell them I'm open, what do you think? I don't fuss when they take long or don't do it perfect the first few cuts. No problem! You're learning! I'm routing for you! However, I'm still treated like I'm not there. I don't need you to focus on me, by all means focus on my hair, but even when you're just waiting for your instructor... :( I've gone for a variety of things. Color, a dramatic cut, and simple layering thinking alright one of these is probably what they are comfortable with. Not at all... My color came out straight up purple instead of red...my dramatic cut left me looking like a poodle and I only have wavy hair...and layers looked like nothing was done...maybe that's a good thing? I have been here 3 times for highlights 6 times for a cut, and 1 time for all over color. alison cuts my hair. she has done a fine job, no uneven ends, im afraid i dont know very much about haircuts good or bad. but i was happy with it. Jesse does my highlights. they turn out great, last august was the best, and this winter was a little bit off. he did the same combo of colors, who knows...? Shannon colored my hair around 2 years ago. oh god, it was orange. i hated it and i waited 2 months to grow it out in fear of fucking up my hair by recoloring it. Peter Thomas is a gem of a salon. I found Edwin about 5 years ago and I couldn't be happier. I have very thick and curly hair, which can be quite a task for someone who is not seasoned in the intricacies of cutting curls, but luckily Edwin knows exactly what to do and how to best execute it. He adds helpful ideas each time I come in, as well as understands and adapts ideas that I bring in from a verbal explanation or from a picture. He has a great sense of shape and design and is sensitive to how hair reacted and responded to a previous cut. Edwin never rushes a client and is always careful to make sure each curl is trimmed just the right way and that the final product is perfect. Edwin recently moved to 17 Jewels Salon in Oakland and I will definitely be following him. I can't imagine trusting anyone else to my curls! read more

There's no doubt you'll walk out of here with great hair, but the service and ambience are lacking big time. They have the chairs packed in really tight and you're always tripping over 20 people to make it to the shampoo chair. Once when I was there, one of the stylists was talking really loudly about his drug habits while there was a little girl sitting in ear shot. Very inappropriate. If I'm going to pay $55 for a haircut and $150 for highlights, I expect LUXURY. And, the service ... I had an appointment for (I thought!) 11:45 one Saturday. They never called to remind me about the appointment. I was on my way there at 11:30 and they called and told me I had missed my 11:15 appointment and I owe them a cancellation fee of $55, same price as the haircut. Yeah, right. I'm very fussy about my blond highlights, so it was a fairly large pep talk that I had to give myself before heading into Peter Thomas, which had been recommended to my by a friend's mother. I had Kelly do partial highlights, giving her careful instructions to basically do EXACTLY what I had already--she did a great job and is lovely the work with. I just went for a 2nd time, and after abt a week, I realized that I was unhappy with the color (which was too subtle for me). If you call them w/in 2 weeks of your initial appointment, the redo is free. She was super nice about it, telling me where she went wrong--I will definitely head back to her. They carry Bumble and Bumble products, as well as another brand whose name I can't remember! Partial highlights are ~$100, which is quite reasonable for highlights. read more

I got a cut and color a few weeks ago from Amyrose at Peter Thomas. She is one of the newer stylists at the salon so a cut is ~$40 ($28 only for new salon customers). I didn't take very much length off, but wanted to reshape my current do after a disastrous last haircut which left my hair looking like a thick, chunky, misshapen curtain in the back. Amyrose did a fantastic job after listening to my complaint about what I had on my head walking into the salon. She thinned out the back, recut the layers, and managed not to take off too much hair. I've had short hair for years and have been doing my best to be patient and let it grow back out to shoulder length. I also had full highlights done (a medium-brown shade). This is the reason I am actually taking off 1 star... the highlights took quite a while to do and I noticed after I went home that the toner wasn't quite saturated as deeply on the underside of my hair. It still looks great, but just wanted to mention that the toning after the highlight was a bit hastily done. I was given the option of going back in to touch it up but chose not to, since it really wasn't that noticeable. Other than that, the location of the salon is easy for me to get to, the prices are reasonable, and from what I could see, the stylists really knew their stuff! read more

Wow! Nick! Wow! I was quite anxious picking out a haircut place up here in the bay area (recent transplant). I chose Peter Thomas because they carry Bumble and Bumble (which I adore; the seaweed shampoo is a god send to my head). So I walked in and was shocked at how cool the place was. I met my hair stylist, Nick. He was awesome. He took his time cutting my hair and really contemplated each cut. He occasionally would go into the zone cutting hair. He was done and asked me how it was. I looked at it and was amazed. I deemed him my personal hair messiah. I'm totally going back. He tamed my hair in a perfect way. I have had the hardest time finding a stylist since moving to the bay area three years ago. Finally I have found one. Here's why: I had been wanting a haircut for sometime, no clue what i wanted, but i knew i was in need of affordable. I saw they were running a promotion, so I read the reviews, and then scheduled an appointment. Most places serve coffee, water, or tea, as do they, especially since its good tea with a nice variety. The books the leave for you to flip through are interesting and still in good condition. its not just hair styles but actual books, coffee table style. next everyone was friendly and the staff seems to really enjoy working with each other. Then the haircut. Usually I tell the stylist, you are the expert, i have some ideas, but i want to hear what you have to say. they talk then essentially give me the same haircut as last time. okay, but unoriginal and not what i told them. i mean come on, i am giving you an excellent opportunity to play do something fun and market you products to me. I tell you i want something different, and you gave me that.. anyway, this gal listened and took me outside of my familiar zone. which bytheway am so happy about. the cut was fabulous, the marketing of products werent ridiculous, there was thorough explanation of why she used what she did and why its good for my hair. almost a week later, not one regret snuck into my head.and to boast, she gives free bang trimmings!!!!!! wooohoooo this is as good as it gets read more

I got a cut from Lindsay a few months ago and I found it to be a very boring layering job straight out of a textbook; it was not inspired by my actual hair, which was in a Betty Paige-like style. She hadn't managed her time well so that my bangs were left untouched. I felt that I could have layered my hair myself. What would have been nice would have been to incorporate my bangs in her haircut, instead of just layering the back. My hair is thick, straight, and long. Furthermore, the placement of the chairs is really tight! i'm petite, yet i was claustrophobic. I asked for a water and never got it. A friend gave me a gift certificate for a $75 haircut with Julie, so I went in expecting something mediocre (first time cut + gift certificate = i am probably the last person they want to see, even though I tip well.) I changed my mind as soon as I saw Julie. Her hair was expertly cut and colored, so I knew I was going to come out looking good. She was attentive when I explained what I wanted (a bob that wasn't shaved in the back and suited my wavy, thick hair - not impossible, but not easy). Not only that, but she took the time to get to know my personal style before she started cutting, so my haircut was well-suited not only to my hair type and face shape, but to my personality as well. This is definitely a gem under Guide to the Good Life in Berekely, broke students edition. I've been here three times as a "hair model," and never paid more than tip. If you're suddenly envisioning a beautiful head of long lustrous hair worthy of a Pantene commercial, that's not the type of "hair model" I'm referring to. When you book an appointment as a hair model, you get stylists who are still in training. They may still be in training, but they're still better than what you would get at, say, UC Salon. Plus, there's always an experienced stylist acting as a guide/mentor and checking up. The cuts I've received have all been great, and I love the Bumble & Bumble products they use...and then try to hawk on you. Sometimes I have to wait a few weeks to get an appointment, but for a cut that normally would cost me $40+, well, I'll wait. read more

I've recently decided to grow out my hair. Not long. Not short. Somewhere between long and short, representing both equally. So, if you were to see me walking on the street and you saw my hair you'd say, "that guy's hair isn't too long, but isn't too short. It's right in between." That's YOU. That's what YOU'D say. For the past 7 years I thought it'd be a good idea to save a buck or two or three or ten by cutting my own hair, which isn't hard to cut. My hair is thin, wirey, very asian/pacific islander, and I have a golden spike that shoots out of the top of my head. All of the aforementioned hair details are true except for the golden spike thing. That's not true. Promise. Sorry to have deceived you, dear reader. Seven years ago, before I began cutting my own hair, I'd walk into a barber shop and the first sound I'd hear is the sound of fancy hair clippers with the electrical umbilical cord attached to its base. The first thing I'd see is clipper heads of all sizes - the 1,2,3...1/8, 1/16,1/64. You get the point. I sit on the chair and the stylist and I exchange a very brief and cold hello/how are yous and subsequently the marriage of electric clipper and #4 clipper head is made, and for 5 minutes the two have vibrant hair sex and their short lived relationship results in a freshly trimmed head of hair, faded on the sides, slightly longer on top. Hold the gel, please. This hairstyle usually lasts me a good 2-3 weeks because I don't mind the shag. Now, making the decision to keeping my hair not long, not short also requires that I commit to making frequent trips to a hairstylist. Using Yelpers as my guide in these uncharted waters, I found my way to Peter Thomas Hair Design. I called the number and explained my situation - "I want to keep my hair not long, not short, but somewhere right in between, so that if you saw me on the street you'd say 'that guy's hair isn't too long, but isn't too short. It's right in between.'" She also asked what I do in my spare time and I said, "aside from killing people with lightning quick roundhouse kicks to the head a la Chuck Norris? I play four square, guitar and uke." She referred me to Karianne, and, because of her EXCELLENT haircutting skills, her friendliness, her insight on what do to when one wants their hair not long, not short; I am now eagerly referring her to you, dear reader. I wanted good quality, affordable haircut in my neighborhood, which is hard to find when the salons are either really expensive or really cheap. I managed to find Ashley here at Peter Thomas, who offers the first cut at $28 dollars and after that it's only $55. I can honestly say I've never been so impressed with a cut, and here's why- she really listened. I have naturally wavy hair, and I never use a blow dryer on it. Usually, when I get it cut, The hair dresser blow dries it, which takes the wave out, and then puts the layers in. In others words, the hair dressers never listens to me, and this is for really pricey haircuts. She did exactly as I asked. She used a diffuser, keeping the wave in, the worked with the wave, and pulled as much as the wave out with the layers. I have never been happier with a stylist and I will definitely be back!!! Also, FYI, due to a medication, I'm losing my hair, and Ashley mentioned that Peter Thomas has a scalp treatment that helps stimulate the follicles and aids in hair re-growth. I've gone to Shannon several times now, and she's great. When I started going to her (2 years ago?), she was still in training, so fit right into my budget. Now she's a full blown stylist, but I still go to her, because she's fabulous. I've had her do my color several times, and pretty much give her free reign over what she wants to do. She has a really good eye, and makes is look awesome every time. While I'm sure that Shannon can do anything, I HIGHLY recommend her if you are looking for a color/style change, but don't quite know much beyond that. She can give you great ideas and help you find something that will work for you and your lifestyle--both for color and cut. read more

I just got my hair cut at Peter Thomas today, and I had to recommend it. I got partial highlights and a cut for $175, which I don't think is unreasonable at all. I didn't like the way my cut was going and the stylist listened and spent quite a while working with me. She pretty much had to start all over again. I also appreciated the brisk but friendly efficiency. I had my color done with one stylist and my haircut with another (I called two days ago and that was the only way the receptionist could arrange it) the colorist made sure that the other stylist got to see and touch my hair while it was still dry. First I have to say that there web site is very easy to use and tells you the prices for the different stylist and soon will have Stylist profiles I have been told. Which is great. Cause I like to know about the person who is doing my hair. I went with "New Talent" Amy Rose. She was very nice and very helpful even though I was not. I'm one of those ppl who come in and kinda know what they want but not really. And then I can't decide.... and yeah. Amy Rose was very patient with me and she made my hair look good. I called to make a same-day appointment, and they found me a spot. This made my day. My appointment was with Karianne. I took in a picture from a few years back of a hairstyle I had really enjoyed. Right off the bat, she was attentive, and I entered the color/cut process really feeling like I was in good hands. My highlights turned out great. I asked for subtle, but still noticeable. They are exactly that. They blend in with my natural hair color really well. The cut turned out great, also. It's always a bummer leaving the salon, and knowing you will never be able to style it the way the stylist does, but she gave me a low maintenance cut that looks cute whether I curl it or just leave it straight. How have I not Yelped Kj at Peter Thomas?!? Perhaps it's part of that silly delusion that I can somehow keep her to myself so that she's always available to turn me fabulous on a dime?? Alas, other people do know she exists, so I may as well share my love for her with the world. Kj never fails to take my hair to the next level- every 6 weeks or so she helps my hair to overcome some internal struggle and look increasingly better. From my weird wavy S curve in the front to my wacky duck-butt hair pattern in the back that always stands at attention- she is always busting out the newest tricks and techniques to help me embrace and embolden what I've got. And work it! I always leave her chair feeling ready to shake a tail feather. It's like a little therapy session for my scalp- she talks it down, boosts it's little ego; a pat on the ass and a go-team and I'm out the door feeling good! The best part is that Kj is also a beautiful person- to look at and to talk to while she works her magic. Her interests range from tap dancing to fancy feasts and everything in between- I think it's appropriate to call her a Renaissance woman, and only fair to mention that I am lucky to also call her a friend thanks to all the chats in her chair! She'll help to keep your style working for your face and personality as well as being trendy and on point for your look- whatever that may be! I also usually leave with a list of bands to look into, movies to see, and restaurants to try. Woof! We've done color corrections, maintained long hair to be as healthy as possible, and made adventurous advances with my ever-shortening current do- I never ever worry about getting a mom-bob from her! I just had another haircut two days ago and it looks GREAT, and from experience I know that it will continue looking GREAT for the next eight weeks till I see her again. She knows hair! I wanted to wait a little bit before I wrote this review so I could really write how I felt about it after a couple days. :) I just got my $28 new client haircut with New Talent Jenna a little less than a week ago. My first impression of this salon was that it's really friendly! As soon as I checked in, I was asked if I wanted coffee, tea, or water. Then they gave me a robe to wear to protect my clothes. When I sat in the chair, Jenna asked what I wanted to do today, and listened and remembered everything I said very well. She definitely improved the mess that was on my head into something much more presentable. She also made good conversation and told me all her favorite places to eat and which places to avoid. =) Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here, and I think Jenna did a good job with my hair. I would come here again if it wasn't so expensive...I'm not really a high-maintenance girl, especially with hair, so I'm not really willing to pay $55 for my next haircut. If you are though, I think this place would be a great place to go! read more

I was lucky to get an appointment here on the same morning that I had called. Alison was available and worked on my hair for about one hour. I started off first with Alison analyzing my hair and playing around with it. I told her to just give me a style or cut that she thought would look best on me. I got my hair washed and dried and then she did her magic. The texture of my hair is absolutely hard and frustrating to deal with... She spent a great deal working with my hair in a way where it would be more easily manageable on a day-to-day basis. In the end result, I was satisfied with my hair and it really did make a difference in my day-to-day hair management. read more

I tried a condition and cut with isai based on a groupon, and am so glad I did. Isai took time listening to what I wanted, shared his plan with me and checked in all along the way...I went from long hair to quite short, and am thrilled with the results! He took extra time during the cut to thin and texture the hair, and even brought me back to the studio for a little extra cut a few days later (I have a lot of hair). I feel like he really understands my hair and also understood and was able to translate my vision into a reality. My hair looks the best that it has in years, and I've been getting tons of compliments all week! Recommend and will be returning. read more

Hair is such a personal thing, and one misstep can completely change the way you look. I have extremely frizzy and curly hair, and I can count the number of people I've completely trusted with my hair on one hand. Julie from Peter Thomas is one of them. She is extremely patient and a great listener. She is also an absolute GENIUS with color - she dyes and highlights my hair, and I always walk out of there amazed at how she was able to get my hair to look exactly how I imagined it. Recently, I took my roommate here for her first haircut after 2 years(!) of growing out her hair, and she left the salon very pleased with her new cut. Jesse could sense that she was nervous about cutting her hair and was very patient with her. He made sure to keep her involved and comfortable with everything, and she loved him for it! I also love all of the assistants who I've met so far! They're all so willing to help and make sure that you're happy and comfortable. Peter Thomas has a very welcoming and friendly environment, which I appreciate. You know how sometimes you walk out of a salon feeling like everyone in there was looking down their nose at you? I NEVER get that feeling at Peter Thomas. Everyone is chill, and you can tell that they all love the work that they do. read more
