It is really too bad that I have to write this bad review. I had a nice experience the first time I went to Dr. Franklin's office. The PA, Larry, was kind and helpful. Nikki, the receptionist, was outstanding. I did not have a doctor in California and I started to think that this office would be right for me. But my next three visits were terrible. Dr. Franklin was unbelievably rude and condescending. The first thing he said to me during our initial visit was, "I'm not a secretary". My second visit with him he said, "I hate doing nurses work". And my final (forever!) visit with him he pretty much accused me of lying about my immunization history. In between these outright instances of utter disrespect he also complained endlessly, insulted me continuously, and could barely contain his contempt for my apparent ineptitude. I went home and cried because he had been so awful to me. It enrages me to think that I must pay this man. He doesn't deserve my money, and he doesn't deserve yours, either. read more

My entire family was seeing Dr. Franklin and were mostly satisfied with the practice - no problem with prescriptions or appointments. My perception began to change in October of 2014 when I spoke to Dr. Franklin about depression and he ignored my concern. Since I'm not on anti-depressants or other modalities to treat depression, I brushed off that concern. That is, until April 2015. My mother, a VERY healthy 70-something, needs a primary care physician and Dr. Franklin's practice was the one I took her to. We walked in together and made an appointment for her the following Monday and all seemed well. When she arrived at her appointment, she was ushered into the exam room, met with the physician's assistant, and was left for a moment for the PA to talk to either the office manager or the doctor. When the PA returned, she informed my mother that they would not be seeing her as this is a "family practice," implying that she's too old and that they don't want to see healthy people in their 70s. Given that my spouse just turned 60, this is a concern for our family. When we were called later in the week to confirm our appointments, my spouse told the person calling that we would no longer be going there because of how my mother was treated. There was no surprise or apology on their part. I'm now going to another doctor in Monterey who will accept ALL of my family and am much happier. I would avoid Dr. Franklin's office if you have mature people in your family or concerns about depression. read more

Doc and staff dismissive and unaware of HIPAA regulations (i.e., thought the Monterey Bay Aquarium had a right to my medical records and that I had to ask aquarium for permission to see them). Also, Franklin denied me clearance to continue volunteer diving at the aquarium after I disclosed I had been cured of hep c. He clearly made a decision based on stigma, not science. Additionally, he without warning yanked the waist of my pants down to palpate my abdomen. This unnerved me and was a clear violation of proper doctor respect toward a patient. read more

Dr. Franklin has a policy, you have to see him every six months or he will not renew a prescription. That's very unusual and unnecessary. The normal time frame for a yearly visit is one year! It means an added fee every six months to have even simple prescriptions renewed. He's more interested in making money than helping his patients. I've never been talked to in such a condescending manner by a doctor or his office. read more

Due to Covid-19, I had a scheduled phone appointment for my annual checkup and lab work. I was sent a confirmation via email, which I did confirm, as well as a link for the patient fusion portal. I went to the link and completed all of my updated information to include all updated contact info., medicines, questions and any symptoms I had. Silly me, I thought the doctor would actually look at the link with the relevant information PRIOR to my appointment. That did not happen and the doctor apparently called an old phone number from two years ago and obviously did not reach me. I had to call two times that afternoon to receive a call back from his scheduler Nikki, who informed me that he had called the incorrect number. She said I would be hearing back from him. When I did not receive a call back from Dr. Franklin, I called the office the next morning and left a voicemail for Nikki. When she returned my call, she said the doctor would call after his nap. He still has not called three days later. Unprofessional, to say the least. read more

As the years go by - I see Dr. Franklin becoming very arrogant. Many years ago the professionalism was great. Some of the staff are good. He and his new P.A. ( Physician's Assistant ) Monica Ball don't seem to care. They are mixed-up about tests and results and phone calls are not returned. Medical costs are too much to be so treated. There are many other offices in Monterey. We will find someplace else on a "great" recommendation. We hate to write bad reviews but it is an honest review. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. Franklin's for several years. His office seems to run very efficiently and his friendly and attentive PA and administrative staff have always provided excellent service. They all seem to really care about their patients. Franklin himself is a thoughtful, talented and patient-centric physician who can sometimes come across as all business but is actually quite warm and engaging. I recently saw Dr. Franklin's PA-C, Theresa Gillespie, and I'm glad I did. I've found my new primary care office. The front desk staff are friendly, very helpful and seem genuinely happy to be there. Theresa took her time and really listened to me. She asked questions which were pertinent, gave me recommendations for treatment with thorough explanations that made sense, and was very professional. I never felt like I was being judged or brushed aside, and I never felt rushed. I'll be seeing Dr. Franklin next for my physical, and if the rest of the office is any indication, I'm sure I will be in good, capable hands. read more

This practice is the worst we have encountered since moving to this area. Dr. Franklin's Mission Statement, "a doctor you would want to bring your mother to for care." I would not bring MY Mother here. They cannot bill correctly. They billed us for a bill that had been paid by the Insurance Co. a month before and the check was cashed. We should not have to do their work. When you see the Practitioner, you come in and a different one is there. The time this happened, this guy tried to lower a dose of medication to last 2 months. I have been on this medication for many years. In my opinion, a practitioner should not have that authority. This caused me many problems and arguments with the office manager who is a rude person who has no business treating people so rudely and yelling at them and belittling them. I was in tears trying to explain things and she would not listen to me. I have had no problem with getting my medication since I have left. My Dr. understands and sees the need and as I am 68, does not see reason to cut this down. I have never abused medication, do not smoke or drink or use recreational drugs. I have many medical issues, and I think this office has no time or patience for sick people. They want easy well patients. They have signs all over the waiting room about their rules. I guess we are supposed to read these instead of magazines since there are none. No WIFI either. The lights have been dimmed so low, that I guess they are saving on Electricity. One thing that I cannot stand and think is extremely rude, is the receptionist slamming the phone down in your ear when she hangs up. I guess she does not realize or care how that sounds to a patient. It also makes you feel like you are bothering them. There are allot better doctors out there that care about your health and not about making you feel like you have to explain and defend yourself. I found several issues since going to my new Dr. that should have been addressed, but were not. Keep looking!! read more

If I could give ZERO stars I would. The whole thing is rather sad. I was always happy with the patient care from the doctor but in the last couple years, he's changed his office. He has "guidelines" and "policies". Here's my take on it: All was well when he was concerned about the patient. Now he seems to care more about insurance billings and what he can get out of charging a patient. He has completely lost sight of any resemblance of customer service as demonstrated by his staff. His nurse, Lupe, more than once has made comments when weighing me. Things like, "Wow, you carry your weight well!" (WTF? I'm not fat, if that's what the woman is suggesting!) I easily run 8 miles in a day and have completed two circuits of P90X, so a comment like that sorta makes me want to deck her. Then his receptionist, Nikki. She has this facade of being super, sugary, sticky sweet, calling everyone "love." But when you actually need her to use that brain in her tiny little head, good luck. A trained monkey could be a better receptionist. She is so well trained to ask for insurance and stick to booking appointments to making the most of charging insurance that I have to tell her EVERY SINGLE TIME that I'm self pay. The last few appointments that I've had with Dr. Franklin I've been disrespected in ways I didn't know existed. He is always late, rushes through the appointment, I never feel like I have his attention or eye contact, I'm never exactly sure what he writes in my chart (if anything). He's repeatedly complained about his software problems. I don't know...there's just something about the office visit that makes me want to never come back. In the last 6 months, life has been rough (to say the least) with many obstacles and challenges for me. The last thing I need is a difficult doctor's office. I need regular maintenance medication and they hold their patients (and medicine) hostage to meet the demands of THEIR OFFICE. In the last two days, I've been told to find another doctor if I can't follow his policies and I've been told that if I need something that bad, I should go to Urgent Care. WHAT?!?!?! One of the most memorable lines in the Hippocratic Oath is, "I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone." Dr. Franklin, you got this part wrong. You use NO judgment, which CAUSES harm to your patients and to make matters worse, you have an incredulous amount of arrogance about all of your precious policies. And this is then promulgated down through your staff who are now trained to treat your patients this way as well. read more

Unable to track his own notes, poor management of records and communication. Office is poor in its communication with the doctor which isn't too surporising since they are married to one another. However, is that really in the patients best interest? it wasn't in mine. I had to remind the docter every time what organs I no longer have and what medications cause allergic reactions, as well as what surgeries I have had. Each time? I liked him at first, but then Larry Rose, his PA (whom I liked a lot) quit, and I did too; he refused to refill a prescription I had taken for years before I came here. His reason was completely arbitrary and was based on a "possibility" that had nothing to do with my situation. I was shocked. His attitude was unacceptable. read more

Dr. Franklin did not seem very interested in talking about my health on my first visit. He ordered a lab test which I got the next day. The following week his staff could not find the results and tried to convince me that I did not need the test! They were extremely rude and dismissive and totally disorganized. An incompetent staff that could lead to a medical error or worse. In addition, their receptionist has a bad attitude and is prone to scheduling errors. I am a patient of Dr. Franklin. He is very professional with my family. He does many checks which have never been done by our previous family doctors. They just get better and better! Reminds me of going to the doctor when I was kid. Everyone in the office genuinely cares about your health and well being. Their customer service is absolutely phenomenal, Dr. Franklin and his PA's are extremely knowledgeable and everything is hassle free. If you are looking for a new PCP or haven't found one. I would tell you get on the phone and call them to book your appointment right away! Best PCP I've ever had. When I was sick Dr. Franklin personally made calls at night to check on me. This is a man who truly cares about his patients and there well being. One of the few doctors left that does it for the good of the people not the size of his wallet! I have not met Dr Franklin and the visiting Dr seems ok, however their billing person is very questionable. I was pointed out by a friend to check my bills as hers proved to be incorrect. I called my health insurance which is a very good company and found out the claim was not filled properly and no one had contacted them about it. When I asked Janie she said I didnt qualify rather then saying "I dont know' or "I cant be bothered to find out' . Due to my trust I did not question her answer at a time, but looking at the bill closly again she has also charged me co-pay. There is no way they let you see the Doctor without paying the co-pay first. I think she is the Dr's wife and basically can get away with any incompetency / dubious billing and not be bothered about the quality of her billing or answering queries. It seems to me that she treats the practice as her personal business to get as much money as possible from the patient in the ways a business person is use to (not a medical background), even if the Dr Franklin is not like that, his office is run like that. Do not be fooled by reviews left by her friends. At some point you will be hit by a bill you should not be liable to pay for, no matter who your insurance is. Its just depends whether she feels like working or not. Be care full when receiving bills and make sure you have proves why you visited the office. You may need this when you contact your insurance. Do not expect honesty or help from their billing. read more

A competent Dr will not have a lazy, dishonest , rude and incompetent billing clerk. I have visited the office 3 times for routine preventative care covered fully by my insurance. For each visit I had to spend a lot of time on phone with my insurance office trying to clear the coding of the Claims. She couldn't be bothered to find correct coding and also charged me for the in-network adjustment which is illegal. She hanged the phone on me when confronted with her dubious behavior. When I went through friends bills, found a lot of similar stuff. Co pay being charged again and so on. Be very careful when you visit this office. Question their bills with your health care provider. Just dont accept what they offer you as no care is taken for coverage and they deliberately will offer routines , checks not offered by insurance so they can charge you fully. An office with a good billing routine most likley will have better doctors. NOT THIS ONE. BE VERY AWARE SHE IS HIS WIFE! read more
