I was referred to this doctor by my primary physician and tried calling several times to make an appointment and no one ever answered the phone. I finally got a call back from his medical assistant (weeks later). She seemed annoyed to be talking to me and kept yawning during the call. She said that she didn't have the referral (sent over a month ago) and told me to have the referring doctor fax it to them. This office's lack of care, professionalism and follow-through was enough to show me that this doctor is not for me. Dr. Peter Birnbaum 'might' be capable of surgery of some sort, but he is dismissive, dishonest and works to cover up the misdeeds of other surgeons who refer their patients to him to fix the disasters they have created. He once told me that a referring surgeon had incorrectly reconnected the nerves of a patient's hand, causing the patient immeasurable pain, but he would not testify to such if the patient sued her. Crooked doctors stick together. Beware: His progress notes are ALWAYS incorrect. Be sure to collect them after your visit, especially if your injury is of a legal nature. Dr. Birnbaum is AWESOME! I was referred to him after dislocating & fracturing my left arm. I was seen a week after I was referred (I work in Healthcare & know for too many overwhelmed doctors waiting only a week to see one is excellent). I was in surgery at the end of that week & am now in physical therapy to regain the use of my arm. Though Dr. Birnbaum moves quick when he sees you, he is thorough. My surgery went really well & my scar is minimal. His staff is amazing as well. Brittany, Mari, & Wendy have all been really helpful with my needs, & they have provided me excellent service. To anyone looking for a great orthopedic md, he is your guy. Again this is a BUSY office, you will wait to be seen, but the wait is worth it. The office staff has absolutely no communication skills. They are rude and seem to play games. I have made sure that I have had EVERYTHING that was asked of me. Showed up early after having to reschedule the first time because of not having the correct items. Made sure I had them this time and got turned away again for not having the "proper" paperwork. I had to wait a month, in pain to go to this rescheduled appointment only to be turned away again because of incorrect paperwork. I'm not into playing games with people looking for help but apparently they are. Save yourself time, money, amount of time you are in pain and go somewhere else. The Dr might be good here but I will never know because I refuse to go back. Ironically.. I was scrolling through all the other reviews and it looks like this is the norm. Sad. read more

The staff needs to be retrained on how to talk on and answer the phones. For some reason they don't pick up phones anymore and don't return calls. I deal with 10 or 11 doctors offices and always get someone on the line. I think the gals in this office just don't feel like answering the phones so they don't . Dr. Birnbaum is an excellent, trustworthy doctor. We learned that he considers surgery the last option, and we agree. Our family member's injury required surgery. Dr. Birnbaum explained why and addressed our questions. His assistant, Brittany kindly answered more of our questions which helped us make an informed decision. His staff members, Mari and Wendy are friendly, knowledgeable and honest. Wendy gave us clear instructions on what to do to heal after the operation. Our family member's surgery went very well. Dr. Birnbaum noticed during the procedure that an additional repair was needed and he took the time to correct that, too! The recovery process has been simple with minimal pain. When calling you are put on hold, then someone else transfers you to somebody's voicemail and that person who is supposed to be a scheduler never picks up or returns calls, 4 days later someone called back finally but by that time we asked for another referral!!! read more

This is not reflection on Dr. Birnbaum. This is on the staff. Specially Mary, who doesn't have customer service skills. In short, I had and appt and before they confirm they took my insurance info. My new insurance info. Otherwise they won't give an appt. Then I get a bill from their NBC Systems showing the wrong insurance company - if you dealt with bill companies you know can be tough - so I call back Dr.s office and left message on 4/20/23 for Wendy. And stated the above to please call me to rectify this because I do not want to get a collection. Nobody called me back. Today 4/28 I got another letter from billing people so I called back Dr.s office so THEY can correct the error and Mari, flat out said I should call the billing to correct. I asked Why since THEY provide the wrong info to their billing people. Mary said if I don't want to be sent to collections, I should call their billing people ...I told her I will update my YELP review and put her name, we'll I guess THAT is the service you may expect from this crew - not all I guess - That's it. As a follow-up to my original review...... I had surgery at UCI Placentia Linda Hospital yesterday, and I had a wonderful experience. Dr. Birnbaum, of course, was correct in his recommendation for surgery, and I am so glad that I took his advice. I am one day post-op and am happy to say I am basically pain-free. I only needed to take one dose of pain medication. I see Dr. Birnbaum next week, and I can't wait to thank him in person. I would highly recommend Dr. Birnbaum to anyone in need of orthopedic treatment . He is pretty amazing and definitely a five-star physician! I saw Dr. Birnbaum for the first time today, and although I didn't like hearing that I needed surgery to repair two broken fingers, I have to give them 5 stars. His staff rushed me into tests and matched me with a oncologist immediately helping out with insurance and scheduling. I'm happy to say I'm 3 years in and beating cancer and living a normal life. I had 3 different opinions regarding removing the hardware from my left ankle when I broke it in 2003. Dr. B was the best Dr. I delt with. And his office staff was great! especially Wendy, the office manager. She was very nice and made sure I was taken care of by the staff at the hospital that Dr. B performed my surgery at. I would recommend this Dr. and his staff to anyone. I will tell you, even if the Dr. was great but the staff was rude or terrible, I wouldn't see the Dr. But in this case, you have both a great Dr. and a great staff. I am in and out of his office in less than 30 min. every time. I have seen him for not only my ankle, but my knee and my wrist as well. If you have a choice, go see Dr. Peter Birnbaum. read more

DO NOT recommend this orthopedic. Definitely double (or triple) books appmts: wait time is outrageous for having the "first" appmt, and the appmts feel rushed. Went into surgery to have meniscus repair and while he was in there he made the call to include a microfracture procedure. There were no discussions at the pre-op appmt that mentioned microfracture. Maybe it helped me long term, but that is my choice to make which I never had the option of making. I'm not a fan of going into surgery without knowing my options. Post-surgery, no mention of the microfracture nor did he call afterwards to see how I was recovering. Had to track him down a day later to confirm what he did during the surgery. Post-surgery follow up appmts he mentioned: "you probably shouldn't run anymore". As an active guy with multiple young kids, a comment like that is the opposite from how I'm trying to live my life. Not sure if this relates to him or not but I'm going to add it so hopefully it doesn't happy to others. He does his surgeries out of a place in Orange that is in-network. Well come to find out the anesthesiologist is out of network and received a bill for $800. My understanding is that I contracted facility and doctors that are in my network and nobody tells me otherwise before or after surgery, and I find out by receiving a bill six months later. This is wrong and I'm holding Birnbaum responsible as I booked the surgery through him. read more

I was referred to Dr. Birnbaum due to severe pain in my right hand. It got to the point where I couldn't open a door or water bottle. I would have horrible sharp pains in my hand that would wake me when I slept, and prevented me from working. He gave me options, explained everything in detail, and even drew a picture for me. The thought of hand surgery and then of all of the post surgery care was overwhelming! We tried the injection, but this didn't help. I agreed to surgery but couldn't take time off of work until December. But my pain got so much worse that when I called on a Monday, they were able to set up my surgery just a few days after. I had basal joint arthroplasty/left thumb LRTI. Dr. Birnbaum advised me many times prior to surgery that my pain would be worse for about 2 weeks post surgery. He wasn't kidding! But, he has been just a phone call away, and I've had such great care. My entire experience with Dr. Birnbaum and his staff was amazing. It has been easy to call and talk to someone; they call to see how you are after surgery; they call to confirm appointments. Everyone there is personable, caring, and empathetic to the patients. I watched them with the others as I waited my turn. Sure, it may take 30 minutes to see the doctor, but how long do you wait for your lawyer, your dentist, your food delivery? And, when I was late for an appointment, they still fit me into their busy day. When Dr. Birnbaum is talking with me, I have plenty of time to ask him my questions. And his staff, if they can't answer my questions, will ask the doctor and then get back to me. Dr. Birnbaum and his staff are amazing! read more

I went to Peter for a second opinion on my finger which had surgery on it. I felt like he pretended to have read my surgery notes that I brought in because he was asking me simple questions that was already on there. It felt really rushed. Like, REALLY rushed. I was asking him questions and he was already on his way walking out of the room. He then said he was going to ask his colleague what he thinks about my finger and to wait in the lobby. After 30 minutes, I asked the receptionist to please check on the doctor for an update. She returned saying that we will have to call you in the next couple days for an update. He was really unprofessional, I would recommend NO ONE to go to him. He also was trying to upsell me on doing physical therapy through one of his friends. read more

The best run office I saw Dr Birnbaum for a broken wrist in July 2018. He is an excellent surgeon. Two months after surgery I was almost back to normal. He does not have the warmest bedside manner but he will help you if he is able to. That being said he is one of the few hand surgeons in the area and he is extremely busy but he still makes time to help you and he shows that he cares in other ways. From the moment I got to his office I saw the difference. His staff helped me fill out forms cuz I couldnt write with my broken wrist. I had been to multiple places for exams and test and refferals and nobody else even offered. What impressed me the most is how he runs his office. Which tells me he takes care of his people. All the girls in the office have been extremely helpful and curteous. They respond to any request for forms or questions that I may have in a timely and professional manner. Its a small office with a "caring feel" when you become a patient there. I will definitely recommend him if anyone ever needs a hand surgeon. read more

Dr. Birnbaum is excellent!. I fell and broke my pinky very badly and from the ER, To the primary care dr, to the orthopedist to Dr. Birnbaum and the referrals and red tape to surgery took 20 days, so the bone healed in the broken position. Dr. Birnbaum had to re-break it, put it back in place and hold it together with pins. Most surgeons just want to cut you, stitch you and send you on your way, but Dr. Birnbaum and his staff are very diligent about follow-up care and making sure that my finger is/was healing properly. Dr. is cordial, nice man with excellent bedside manner, All the staff are friendly, professional and go out of their way to be helpful. The office is busy because he's such a good dr but they keep everything moving along smoothly and try not to keep you waiting for a long time. Dr Peter Birnbaum, DO is an exceptional orthopedic hip surgeon. I am baffled who says below he is a podiatrist. Anyway, I had lumbar surgery in Mar 2014, but then fell at home Jul 2014 and broke my hip. He was the surgeon assigned to me at St Joseph's Hospital in Orange. I'm mid fifties and my hip bone was not arthritic. He had to determine what type of surgery would be best for me in the long term. Especially, because I have several complicated chronic health issues. He communicated clearly with me and my family. He clearly wanted me to have a great outcome not complicating any of my existing problems further. I'm at 3 weeks post hemi replacement, am walking with a cane and pain is minimal. I can't say enough about this top notch surgeon. I wouldn't hesitate to refer him to family and/or friends. P.S. Don't be put off by the older building his office is located at. He is the only orthopedic surgeon in his practice and his office is just fine. read more

I was referred to Dr Birnbaum last November for a couple of procedures I needed done on my arm. Now my scenario may not be typical but I was amazed and grateful nonetheless. See I came in on a Monday for a consult, and the surgery was going to be scheduled about a month later. But there was a cancelation on that Friday, and Pamela like a champ was able to get approval from my insurance and boom! I was under the knife on Friday. Dr Birnbaum did an amazing job operating on me. These weren't simple surgeries, but he has some skills. I am in full recovery, with no complications, no doubt a testament to Doc's dedication. His office staff was great too! Pamela and Wendy are sweethearts and they truly cared about me and my recovery. I highly recommend Dr Birnbaum and his team. I saw Dr Birnbaum for a torn meniscus April 2017 he said the surgery went well that he had extra time since the next patient was a no show so he was able to do more on my knee ? The way he explained it was he fixed the meniscus, scrapped the arthritis and made a small incision on my bone to allow for healing ? He then said he had done the same procedure for a friend in Costa Rica ? It sounded good but my knee never improved. I was doing physical therapy 3 times a week. I would see him for follow ups and he would say it takes time you will heal. 8 months later I was still in pain so I had a second opinion by another orthopedic surgeon. After MRI the meniscus was still torn so I had a second surgery to repair what Dr Birnbaum had done December 2017 I returned to work April 2018 but my knee now had a contracture. It has been very painful physically and mentally for me. I now need a complete knee replacement surgery. Not a good experience. read more
