5/8/16 This review is solely on Rhys, the dog trainer for the puppy I classes. I have gone to another Petco (I will not disclose that location) and when I met the dog trainer, she informed me that she introduces a water bottle in her training classes. She reassured me that it doesn't harm the dog, but that it let's the dog no that what she/he has done is not good. For me personally, I don't feel comfortable what the water bottle method. When Petco was advertising 50% off their training classes, I was extremely hesitant due to the bad taste that was left in my mouth from the trainer that I spoke to at another location. I ended up signing up for the classes and give it a try since it was a great deal. When I had signed up, I had asked the store manager about the trainer who would be training my puppy and I had explained to him what my experience was at another Petco location. The store manager asked what location I went to (where I had the bad experience), but I told him that I didn't want to disclose that information (I didn't want to throw the trainer under the bus). He wanted to make sure that the trainer (I had a bad experience with) was not from the Walnut Creek location since that is where Rhys is from. I reassured him that it was not the Walnut Creek location. Today is my 5 going on 6 month Min Pin puppy's 4th class with Rhys. Rhys is amazing at what she does. She is very patient, gives tips and suggestions. Because of Rhys, I will be signing up for puppy II training classes. I always have many questions (I probably ask the same questions over and over again) since I have never owned a fur baby and Rhys is so patient with me. If anyone is looking for puppy training classes, I highly, highly recommend Rhys. Rhys truly teaches and believes in positive reinforcement. read more

Went here to get my Chi's nails trimmed. She is such a terror when it comes to getting her nails cut-- a real 4 lb nightmare! They took her in immediately when I got there and all three techs helped to keep her calm and successfully clipped her nails. My dog nervous pee'd all over one of them-- I felt sooo bad but they just smiled and for only $10, it was a bargain. Will def. return (hopefully, we are welcome back after the peeing incident!) I also buy dog food for my two dogs here and while it is decent, think I will be switching food soon from Nutramax to something else cause they are both eating grass like crazy so think they are having upset stomachs from it. I only come here since it's the closest Petco to me. This review is just for the store since I do not take my dog to get groomed at these big name pet stores. I guess my experience here is usually just okay - nothing spectacular. I like that they have clean up stations for doggy accidents but I think some pet parents are just lazy or do not pay enough attention to their fur children to clean up after them in store. There have been a few times that I've come in here and seen dried up pee stains on the floor.. gross. Clearly if they're dried up they've been there for a while. Anyway, I picked up some Merrick GF food for my dog the other day with my Pals Rewards coupon. The coupon made it a good deal but in the future, I probably won't buy it here without a coupon since Pet Club sells it for cheaper. The lady who rang me up (Susan? according to my receipt) wasn't really friendly and barely said a word to me. She also got my Pals Rewards number wrong (my brother has an account with the same phone number) since she didn't even bother to ask for my name to connect it to the right account. I find the service your groomers provide to my dog great she is always clean and happy when picked up. However, I find the grooming staff to sometimes be condescending. I understand they wash a lot of dogs but the one time every couple of months they see my dog they always have some opinion about her "condition". Well guess what I've had the dog for 7 years and I might know a little bit more than they do about her "condition" if I was looking for a diagnosis of a problem I would take her to our vet, but rather I simply need my dog washed. Due to this agenda you grooming staff seems to have they fail to pay attention to the services I request. It would be a more pleasant experience if you were to simply stop talking and playing veterinarian and simply listen and do what is requested. read more

I know pet shops are evil and animals are cramped and all other horrible things, but this review is going to ignore all that and focus on the lovely people who work at this location! We came in to look at potential rabbit hutches but were told those are rarely offered in store, and we'd be better off looking online. A hamster for adoption caught our eye and we couldn't resist asking to take a look! The guy who helped us was very helpful with answering my (many) questions and didn't pressure us at all. We ended up taking the hamster and were given a cage, bedding, food, toys, treats, and more to take home with him. They insisted we take it all, even though we explained we already had all the supplies we needed. The girl who looked over our forms reassured us that no, the hamster was not sick; no, his poop wasn't too runny, and told us that if anything went wrong, we could call them - despite adopted animals not officially being guaranteed by the store. The employees are all so patient and we left very happy with our new family member. It doesn't hurt that the store was organized, and aisles were clean! If you're coming in to buy a pet - call in first: a lot of their displays were empty. Don't leave disappointed! read more

Golden showers and rodents... What's different about this Petco when compared to every other Petco on the face of the flippin planet, you ask? The people who work there. And the animals. They may offer the same species of animals, but they are all their own little birdies and fish and reptiles and what not. The selection of rawhides at the help yourself bar is pretty impressive by Baxter's standards. And seriously, this guy has seen the world. While he was a stray, he hitch-hiked across the country visiting Petco's from Tampa to Tacoma and he claims the rawhide bar here is the best, hands down. Plus he likes to pee on the hamster cages when we walk in, and you know what? If that makes him happy, PISS AWAY, OK? He deserves to be happy these days! Seriously, though, the people at this location are always super friendly and helpful. A few visits back I even watched a dude that worked there load stuff into an elderly ladies' car for her since it was raining. How noble, eh? That's why I go. Cool peeps, respectable and friendly. Called and spoke to Madi one of the manager and told her what happen with one of my english bulldog in their grooming, she said she will find out and get back to me Hopefully they can put a webcam or monitor so they can see if the people in the grooming is abusing the pets or whatever they do... this would be a great tool for both parties. English Bulldogs are very sweet dogs..they will never hurt anyone... Also,they just turned 1 year old today. Im very disappointed on how they handle my dogs Daisy and Charly Its not their first time, they been here and another location and all went well.. I just want to know what happen but of course they will not tell you the truth.. if only my girls can talk and tell me what really happen... Dog training here is amazing! Ask for Hailey!! My cockapoo Mia has taken Puppy 2 and Adult 2 and it has helped us tremendously. Our puppy at 7 months struggled with fearful aggression and Hailey graciously took her on. She is the sweetest! Mia wouldn't even go near the trainer the first class and by the 3rd week she couldn't wait to go to class and learn! We couldn't be happier with the customer service! I called because we have taken our shi-poodle mix to the groomer and there was no issue with grooming him. His hair gets curly and has been on a schedule at our local groomer in the East bay, however with the SIP our local groomer is closed. We took him this past Saturday and I asked to not shave him too short as it's a traumatic to our puppy. He was kept for 3 hours and was shaved bald!! He now is refusing to eat, drink water and is Terrified!!! We called yesterday and was told oh it must be a health issue with your dog!? He is a perfectly healthy puppy and now am taking him to the vet for post traumatic stress issue. I refuse to take him here ever again. They were obviously overwhelmed and booked. read more

I only stop in here occasionally because it's close to my work and the other Petco in San Ramon seems closer to my house when I'm home. But I did bring my pooch here when he was a pup for puppy behavior classes a few years back, and I do pick up dog and bird supplies from time to time here. It's always organized and tidy. I usually find what I need (and more...argh look how much I spent on toys!?!) And today multiple store folk asked if I needed help as I perused the isles as I realized this store is completely flipped version of San Ramon..."no thanx I figured it out". Had to get some bird seed (since the independent place I usually patronage is closed on Wednesdays? So I stopped and looked at the parakeets. Mine "Mr. Rocky Balboa" just passed away at 12 years of age, and I already have three other birds and a pack of dogs, so as much as I miss him I don't need another. But I stopped and watched them in their giant cage and they were all very healthy and the cage was super clean. The birds were interacting with each other and chattering. No one was missing any feathers, and I do have to say I was very impressed with it's cleanliness. Even the other finches and one Cockatiel all looked clean and healthy too. And when I checked out the guy at the register (a young dude with tattoos) engaged in conversation and asked how many and what kind of dogs I had (seeing all the toys I was purchasing). But it's that small talk and kind words that make a difference, not some indifferent kid just taking my cash. So I'd definitely go back and shop here again when I'm off work or just over in the Creek. read more

My sister and I both love our pets very much. We love this petco! Everyone there is so helpful, they've answered every question we have had. From our first betta tanks to switching our dog to senior food. We go to this store over the emeryville store which is easier to get to, because the staff there isn't as knowledgeable. Today when I walked in Damien came up and asked how our pets were doing and I told him about our bunny passing away. He took a moment to talk with me and asked how I was doing. It was above and beyond customer service. Thanks for taking a moment to ask how my pets were doing. This Petco is good. We've been buying pet food here for a while and usually find what we need. Like most chain pet stores, they don't carry many specialty foods, but I have a cat allergic to chicken and am able to choose from a few brands that suit her diet needs. The staff is comprised of pretty average people, lacking a bit of enthusiasm. I don't know about you, but if people brought cute pets to my job all day I'd be pretty happy. PetCo's dog trainer, Tony, is the best. I have raised many pups in my life but never before a tiny one. Tony is great with Joey in our training class. He is gentle, knowledgeable and always positive. We've done training class with him as well as puppy play times. At play time there are all sizes of puppies. Tony is great at protecting and encouraging play and proper play manners and in matching up play partners. He communicates well with the pups and their people. I highly recommend Tony to anyone and everyone! read more

The people who work in the grooming salon are fantastic. You can see the stations from the front desk so you are able to see how well they treat the animals, how the animals are reacting during the grooming (ie; are they stressed out it not) and you can also see how very clean it is. The people u deal with there are very knowledgeable and helpful. ***A special great big THANK YOU to a technician named Reese who helped me when I brought in my dog in in a panic (me) over a tick imbedded in his shoulder I couldn't get out. With calming bedside manner, she grabbed a pair of tweezer/pliers(?) and got it out in about 3 seconds. HUGE THANK YOU REESE!! The store is Very big, they have everything, and all the employees I've dealt with there are friendly and knowledgeable. This is my go-to store. Easy parking. Check it out. read more

Location is convenient but going to get your specific brand of dog food and the shelves being empty is not. This happened a couple of times now. When I asked they said they just got a shipment in and should try in the morning. This was before 7pm too. Looking around, a lot of shelves were empty. For being one of the Big Bad Wolf corporate chains, I'm super happy with the Walnut Creek location! Their employees are super friendly and helpful. I have returned numerous dog toys that my one year old pup keeps destroying. The staff is always forgiving and they suggest more durable toys and give me store credit for the destroyed toys that will soon be annihilated!! They also have an amazing selection of healthy dog food. It's not cheap but you do get what you pay for. Recently, my over adventurous girl lab was skunked pretty bad and they happily took her in to be groomed. They did a pretty good job, but I'm taking a star away because she still smells. (The sad thing is that I'm starting to get used to the stench). Maybe it's not the Petco staff's fault for the month old stink, so Im sorry about the lost star. They definetly did a better job than I would have done. I only hope my little brown dog learned her lesson.... but I highly doubt it!! Keep up the good work, you big corporate chain!! read more

This store is located in a pretty convenient location. The manager John is friendly and helpful as can be. Told him of a problem I had online and even though the stores usually act separate from online he solved my problem. I felt that he didn't have to, but did : ) The store is clean and pretty organized. The items that are on clearance are the best deal. Some cashiers are nicer and look more alert than others : ) Mines was falling asleep at the register, and it would kill him to make any eye contact lol. I just picked up my puppy from here- and I am very pleased. I got the brush and wash for my Great Dane puppy, and the girls did a fantastic job! The basic wash includes brushing, shampoo, blowdry, ear cleaning, nail trimming, and the yucky emptying of the anal glands. Charlie's coat is shiny, he smells great, and most importantly he left happy. He is going through his scared of everything phase, so it was wonderful to see that he was happy and not stressed out when I picked him up. I would definitely recommend this place for a basic grooming (I can not speak for their hair trimming skills). It is definitely worth the extra few dollars to take them here than Petsmart in Concord. read more

Took my sweet goldendoodle to the groomers here after him being with a groomer for two years and having no problems but the distance. Switched over to petco groomers & after a few appointments he stopped wanting to go into the store, starting crying outside. Thinking not much of it I dropped him off for his appointment and he came back shaking, scared, beaten. DO NOT drop your paw buddy off here if you care for them. He has never had a problem with anyone, always the sweetest dog but now won't step foot in this store and is scarred by strangers. read more

So, long story short, I ended up rescuing a dog today without being prepared. Which led me to Petco to pick up all the new supplies I needed. But going to the pet store with a new puppy isn't the easiest thing. The staff here went above and beyond helping me out. One staff member noticed me struggling to maintain my new dog while trying to get all the new items I needed and instantly jumped in. From helping me around the store, to grabbing the supplies I needed for me. They even pampered my new pup with lots of love and treats the entire time. Brian, the manager, was also kind enough to help guide me through some new dog owner pamphlets and help me load up my car so I could keep my pup happy and entertained. I will forever be thankful for the team here and will ONLY and EXCLUSIVELY shop here from now on. I can not stress enough how much they helped me out today. Thank you! Me: Note furry dog on lead looking for a bath Chick: Okay fine but we have to have vaccination records. Me: The 3 papers in front of you. Long & Short, If you want to bathe your dog youself, skip these dizzy tomatoes with 2 tubs at PetCo, go to Pet Food Express with 8 private tubs that aren't in "their" grooming area and get what you pay for. (Pay $5.00 more and get a loaner collar, helpful knowledgeable staff, a nice large bathing area, a bib, 8-12 towels), damn, I could go on but I'll do that when leaving my 5 FIVE star review for them. I've been shopping at this location for years and the staff has always been helpful... until today. Several months ago I mentioned to the store manager that another local pet store offered a lower price on the same brand and variety of dog food. He offered to match the price, and since that day I've purchased all of my food from Petco of Walnut Creek. Price match guaranteed! Today my cashier refused to honor the price match - I presented her with a valid receipt from my last purchase and offered to call the other retailer for a price check. She still refused! I asked to speak with "John" the manager whom also refused. Really? Thanks to manager "John" and the angry old cashier, I will no longer be shopping at this location. FWIW - I prefer to shop at Petco because of their reward program and I spend about $200 a month on dog food and supplies. For the Grooming Salon: Beyond unprofessional. What's the point of advertising hours you don't keep? Further, why bother telling someone who calls to ask your grooming hours, and is told they always go til 8 pm, no matter what, 7 days a week, and then who shows up at 7 pm to be told, "Oh yeah, they went home early cuz they were done"? Can you not see how totally unprofessional that is? Second Petco this has happened at. And the last for me. You should be out of business. read more

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT. This is the 2nd time in a row that the cashier has charged me for an extra can of food I never received. Fool me once... an honest mistake. Fool me twice... you're scamming me and I'm not happy about it. It's seriously not that hard to count and if he has repeated problems with this, he could check the screen to verify he rang up the correct number. It's not even like I bought a ton of cans; he ripped us off whether it's 4 cans or 20 cans. It's now obvious he is doing this to us on purpose and who knows how many times we've been screwed out of a can and our money. It may sound petty to complain about 1 can but at $2.99+tax each can, the cashier is the petty one to be stealing from customers just trying to feed and care for their pets. This petco deserves no stars, I own two leopard geckos and I went in there for supply's. When I looked in there reptile section I noticed a 5 gallon tank with about 20 geckos crammed inside. Some were full grown and some were babies but some stood out because they had been bitten and attacked by the others. Geckos should not be stored in a 5 gallon tank especially when there's 20! I was so upset about this I left, I will never support this store and do not suggest buying your pets here. They are not cared for properly. read more

My puppy went through Puppy Training 1 and 2 with their dog trainer, Matt. He did an extremely good job teach her the basics (sit, down, paw, and stay) along with leash training. I could tell she was having fun and really enjoyed seeing him each week. Would recommend his training to anyone who has a puppy and needs some help. read more
