Well I'm very disappointed to walk in and see so many animals living in filth and looking sick. I buy dog food here all the time but today I was just taking a walk and decided to kill some time and look around at the animals. I noticed the guinea pigs were bald and had feces all over their enclosure even in food bowls. This was not one day of poop either this habit had not been cleaned in a very long time.Guinea pigs are not hairless nor do they shed this badly unless they have some sort of dietary or genetic issues. Then I turn around to see the birds and same thing filthy enclosures the poor things looked like they're so stressed out they are plucking they're own feathers. Birds are social animals yet they have most of them separated. But my biggest concern is that this place is neglecting the care of these animals. I believe it is probably due to understaffing the employees. They do not have enough to keep up. This is not right and I'll be reporting to animal services as well. Love this petco location! I've come here several times. First time was to get my Bearded Dragon. That's when I first met Damien who was and is as incredibly knowledgable, friendly, helpful, and patient as anyone at any store could be! He helped me pick out the correct vivarium, the right bedding (which he took the time to explain to me as to why certain choices were better than others), and the best food options for my beardie. I'd come in from time to time to pick up more things, and each time he remembered me and never missed a chance to ask how Mushu (my bearded dragon) was doing. :) Then a few months later I adopted a Pitbull/Siberian Husky who I named Luci from the Martinez animal shelter and got everything I needed for her to feel right at home. I was lucky enough to find Damien there again, and he explained to me the best kennel size, leash length, harness size, types of toys, potty training options, and all the different treat options I needed to know! He also told me about their dog training classes and pet grooming they offer in store. All of the employees here are so friendly and you can tell they all love being there and love the animals they come across. I am so grateful that Damien helped me as much as he could each time I came in! Thank you thank you thank you. Watch the expiration dates on food here as they have expired products on the shelves. They use a lot of chemical deodorizer here which is suffocating and the scent is awful. I had the smell in my hair and clothes even still when I got home. All the products smell of the stuff too. It's gross. The hours are listed wrong here too. They don't actually open until 9am. I love this Petco and have had great experiences with their vet and grooming services. We have taken my puppy here for all of his shots & the vet & assistants are fantastic. They are always so nice & answer all of our questions, even if we just pop in on a whim! My puppy doesn't even get scared to go see them so they must be doing a great job! We took him for nail clipping & were able to make a same day appointment & they did it in about 3 minutes. It looked great and the cost is very low ($10). Before I begin, please take note that my dog has been to the groomers at least 8 times before for full on grooms (once every 3 months) and about once in between those grooms for nail trims. Let me start off with the positive: When I initially called for information about grooming, a young man answered the phone and was EXTREMELY (almost too extreme) welcoming. I was trying to get my dog's nails trimmed, and he assured me that they always had someone on staff to do that at a second's notice. Good ends there. Now for the bad: When I walked to the grooming section, I waited 15 minutes for a young girl to register a dog for his nails to be trimmed. I didn't think it ever took THAT long, but ok, whatever. When it was my turn to be checked in, she said I was already in the system, even though I had NEVER visited this Petco before. When I mentioned I used the Petco by my home in San Jose, she condescendingly stated that each Petco operated independently, and I MUST have been there before. Glad to know she's been able to keep tabs on me. and...the UGLY: My dog IS sensitive to getting her nails done, but is totally tolerable (I've done them myself once, and watched it done twice). She took my dog to the back area and began clipping. On the 4th or 5th clip, my dog yelped as though she cut too far! I heard the groomer say, "Oh I didn't hurt you even" (more for me to hear than my dog, I assume, because afterward I checked and my dog's nail was indeed bleeding). After that all I could hear was the groomer yelling at my dog to "stop." Within a minute she brought my dog out and in a flustered frustration shook her head and said that I needed to take my dog to a vet or somebody else with more experience because she just couldn't handle this "one." Pretty disappointed to see the poor quality of care for the small mammals and reptiles. Many of the enclosures were full of animal waste which clearly had been accumulating over a number of days. Many of the mice looked injured or ill. Bearded dragons all had stress patterns and enclosures didn't offer proper temperatures for them-- all cold. Live bugs were almost all dead. Would encourage folks to think twice before giving business and promoting animal sales from this space. read more

Today I went into the store for a few tropical fish. The fish tanks were in a poor state with many dead fish in the tanks. One tank had 14 dead, other tanks on the same water system had several dead and one of the glow fish tanks had 3 dead with fuzz around them, indicating they had been that way for more than several days. I get it, fish die. But clearly no one is in charge of this fish habitat. I brought it to the attention of one team member and he gave me the eye roll. I told the cashier that helped me "whoever is in charge of the Fish habitat needs to step up their game", he asked "in what way?" I told him about the dead fish. None of the minimum wage team members here give a S**T. read more

I was a victim of false advertising/fraud. First, their banner says "Free same-day delivery on orders $35+ when you order by 2PM". There is no footnote or anything noting any exclusions at all. Second, when I went to checkout, on the checkout page it specifically said "You're saving $12.24 on this order PLUS free shipping!" but then when I placed the order, I was charged $11.98 for shipping, even though my total order was $46+ dollars and even though it specifically said the $12.24 was on top of free shipping. When I contacted customer support to get a refund on shipping as free shipping was advertised & guaranteed at checkout, they said there was no way they could do it. They gave all kinds of excuses that blatantly went against what they advertised and what was promised at checkout including that I wasn't getting free shipping anymore because of the $12.24 discount, even though the checkout page specifically said I was getting free shipping in addition to that. They would not honor their agreements and engaged in fraud. Also their customer service chat feature is almost impossible to use because it was a white background with white font, so customers cannot see what/when they are typing. I'm giving a low review because this particular location is participating in fraud by doing same day delivery but fraudulently charging customers for it against what they say in the checkout page, but obviously the main problems are 1. Petco HQs 2. Petco online customer service also refusing to follow the law. The employees at this particular location are probably fine, so I added a star. read more

They have the food that I feed my dog in stock so all is good. The parking is sparse on Saturdays, but we found a spot. They also have free parking and their own lot which is great for a quick in and out in downtown. Customer Service was nothing to talk about. Neither good or bad. They seem to have plenty of clothing and toys. There is a grass medium out front which helps with relief prior to entering. Layout- Everything is where you expect to find it. I have been coming to this location for a long, long time. Over time, they've expanded the animals, specifically reptiles, they carry. Chameleons are extremely high maintenance. I've had one for over 2 years. No I am not a zoologist, but I do understand the basic needs of this type of reptile. They belong high up, so they can look down on things, (as they'd do in a rainforest) & really aren't suppose to be living with other chameleons in such close quarters. Chameleons should not have substrate, especially WOOD CHIPS at the bottom of their cage, due to them ingesting it, & impacting their digestive system. Chameleons aren't like other lizards, they require specific care, or they will die. Here's some red flags at this location: -The chameleons live beneath a tortoise. They are a little over a foot from the ground. Why is it that tortoise, who lives on the ground, is above the creatures that live in the trees? Just looks wrong. They belong higher up! -Substrate at the bottom of the cage. I have witnessed a number of times chameleons at the bottom of the cage, trying to eat the wood chips. As I said earlier, this impacts their digestive system. -Fake plants. no explanation needed. -They've packed 4 chameleons into 1 cage. It is sick! They are pretty big chameleons too, I wouldn't be saying this if they were babies. Next time, I'll take a photo. But I have hopes that they will resolve this issue, not for me, but for those poor chameleons. If you must sell these fragile & high maintenance reptiles, provide them with the proper home. Demonstrate how to care for these animals to the people you're trying to sell them to, so that they don't end up dead within weeks. I suggest actually taking some advice from East Bay Vivarium, or not selling chameleons. read more

A woman here with a snarky attitude assured me I would get my pals rewards points when I gave my phone number and it seemed to not work. I had just signed up as a first time customer and just wanted to be greeted with friendliness at petco. I asked multiple times if the number/rewards points had gone through, she was hesitant at first saying she didn't know. But eventually said yes it did. I had to just trust what she said based on her stern (and annoyed :( ) tone and didn't want to cause trouble. Needless to say, it's been months later, and I still think about that lady and how my rewards points never went through as I check my app repeatedly. Not following the CoCo Health guidelines for Covid. I took my dog to Petco on Ygnacio yesterday to get her dew claws trimmed which curl and are in danger of growing into the skin. I was the only one wearing a mask and gloves. My understanding was that people are supposed to wear masks and only go out if it's absolutely necessary. I was surprised that no one at Petco was following the six foot rule, couples were going in and out with their dogs like it was just a regular day. In fact it was worse than a regular day. I have never seen it that busy. Petco has not made any changes in regards to checking out as you still have to touch the screen. None of the employees wear masks or gloves or practice the six foot rule. Disappointed that Petco is not taking this more seriously. read more

I found myself needing a very expensive bag of "prescription" diet for my dog on a Friday evening. Took advantage of the Petco online offer for 25% off if you order online and pick up in the store, which made it a much better price than I could get anywhere else. I called the Walnut Creek store because the purchase required a veterinarian's approval. DeeDee was extremely helpful over the phone with helping me coordinate this, and even called me back after the store closed (!) to let me know that it would be waiting for me in the morning. I've been going to Petco groomers for years. This review is specifically for this location , and specifically for the manager and groomer named Kennedy. I set up my appt online , as I normally do, ( I do monthly visits for the past 2 years) and the system asked for my updated vaccines. I let them know I provided the updated records back in Jan 2020, and had since visited the groomers twice . The manager refuse to see my dog without any proof of record. He called my groomers location who takes care of my dog on a regular basis and she was able to verify that they had indeed recorded my updated vaccines but somehow the system was having issues. After verifying my information with another Petco store, they still refused to see my dog. The groomer Kennedy was super rude by not acknowledging me nor having the courtesy to speak to me directly. She would IGNORE every question I asked. With the currently environment we are in, COVID 19,I was trying to eliminate multiple trips home (20min drive ) In order to provide proof of my vaccines for the 2nd time. I will not ever come back to this place again, terrible service!!! Groomer Kennedy needs customer service skills revamped . Take your pets elsewhere. read more

I'm done going to this Petco. I'll go across the street to Pet Food Express even though I hate the parking lot there. This is like the 3rd time my dog didn't receive a treat at the checkout from the cashier. My dog expects the treat. It helps with his training and socialization. And it makes him happy. The store itself is great - it's got a huge selection of food and other supplies for my cats. My only issue with it is the staff, a man named Jeff who worked with me on my last visit. I needed help finding a toy for my Cat and he seemed more preoccupied with putting away stuff in a box than he was with helping me. He simply pointed me to the Cat aisle and said "everything is there". When I asked him for more help, he took a big sigh and grudgingly came to "help" which consisted of him telling me he had a dog and wasn't too sure what worked for cats. Next time I need help I won't bother with him, I'll look for Maddy as she's been super helpful the few times I've needed it for finding specific foods. This is a tough review to write because there are 5 star people (rare) at Petco and then there are far less awarded stars on staff who do not deserve much more then 1 or 2 stars. During the past 11 years we have shopped at Petco stores in Vallejo, Fairfield, and recently two in Walnut Creek. The customer service attitudes (cashiers and sales staff) leave so much to be desired at all locations, but we still shop because the stores are handy and offer the dog food we need at a fair price. With that said, last night I called the Walnut Creek store on California Blvd. to arrange a new grooming appointment and to discuss a prior problem we had with a groomer. The girl who answered was close to worthless (typical) but with my insistence she did turn over the call to another girl named Michele who was SPECTACULAR. Very sharp and completely understood my problem. Took the matter by the tail. Not only did she grasp and understand, she completely rectified the issue to my complete satisfaction and more. Hence the earned 5 stars. There is more. A few months ago there was a very poor grooming of our dog at this Petco. She was almost not recognizable with the poor cut. Today we had our dog groomed by Charli at this Walnut Creek Petco. OUTSTANDING job. Hence the 5 stars. Charli is a "keeper". Thank you Michele and Charlie for everything. DeeDee is extremely rude! This is the second time I've went into this store and DeeDee is rude to me. Each time I ask a question she responds so rude. Today was the last straw of me dealing with her rudeness. I asked her could she point me in the right direction for something for my puppy. Apparently I mispronounced the word and she goes "oh actually it's not called that for dog". Never once greeted me or said "how can I help you?". I finally asked her why she is so rude and she explained she is having a bad day. But that's not my fault I shouldn't have to feel like I'm not allowed To ask any questions. This review is specifically for one of the staff in the grooming salon, Kayla. My sweet 12 year old cava-poo needs to have surgery on Thursday, and the vet suggested she be groomed just prior to her appt. to help prep the area they will treat. I also felt it would be nice for my baby to be freshly groomed so she would feel better, but mostly this was on the recommendation of her vet. I live in LA (but am from Walnut Creek and travel back often). Surgery is scheduled in LA for Thursday at 7:00am, so I called Petco several days ago and was told they didn't have anything. I could have EASILY gone elsewhere, but then received a call from Kayla saying they had a cancellation. I'm now on a very tight timeline. I show up and a lovely staff member, Kendra, tells me that Maggie needs her rabies. No one told me this (although they ALWAYS have previously)! I try to get her into VetnCare next door last minute for a rabies and they couldn't fit her in. I went back into grooming and Kayla was now at the front. I repeated the story, told her no go on the rabies, and very nicely asked that next time they be certain to tell people when their fur babies need proof of rabies because in my particular case, this time, it was a big deal. Again, I had PLENTY of time to have had this done before I came in had I known. Kayla tells me they "always do this" and "it's even in RED right on your profile so we don't forget. I don't know who called you". Guess what, YOU DID, KAYLA. She refuses to acknowledge this or even say she's sorry (which I would have happily accepted, because things happen, except that NO ONE ever wants to take personal responsibility for ANYTHING anymore). Her condescending attitude was just a bit shocking. Now I just have time on my hands, girl, seeing that I can't get my dog in...so, I ask why she felt she couldn't apologize for the over-site, you know, as a customer service thing (that apparently doesn't exist anymore). She looked me straight in the eyes and said no. 5 stars to you though, Kendra! Your kindness and lack of defensive behavior shines a bright light through the sad state of customer service these days. Sorry I had to write this, but I'm pretty upset about having to cancel my babies surgery this week. Do better, Kayla. read more

Awful service from the grooming salon and the store manager. The groomers (Specially Miriah) are inadequate for the job! My little poodle growled at her and she refused to do the job, if you can't handle a little poodle then what are you doing working for a dog grooming service? She also refused to look at me in the eye and admit that she was being ridiculous and also refused to give me the information of the groomers manager. When I went and talk to the store manager he was very rude and totally ignorant. They should not be hiring people who cannot do the job! I will never come to this place for grooming or food unless I absolutely have to and there is no other option. I honestly think Miriah needs to find another job that suits her better, maybe clean the toilets at the store? If she can handle that. I suggest people go to Clean Dog Happy Dog! Let's have a show of hands to see who here has purchased crickets! Well, my younger son recently captured a praying mantis and decided to keep it as his pet. We did some research on the internet and found out that mantises are carnivorous. So, off to the pet store we went to purchase some bugs ... My conclusion after leaving the store with about a dozen small crickets for $1.20: good thing we have a praying mantis for a pet! Pets can be expensive. Side note: one of my sons once won a free goldfish at a festival. Well, that "free" goldfish cost us over $50 in aquarium equipment; though said free goldfish has since passed away, we've re-purposed his aquarium as a praying mantis home. Side note 2: now that our praying mantis has food, we discovered that the food needs food. This stuff is complicated! Maybe next time, I will suggest that our new found pets be released after 24 hours. Side note 3: I realized that I've said nothing about the store. We didn't spend a long time here, but we appreciated the very friendly employees, who encouraged the bubbling excitement of my son at his new pet. Parents really appreciate when other adults don't talk down to kids; some store clerks talk about my kids as though they are deaf and dumb, but not at Petco. We loved the kid-friendly and efficient service. read more

I almost made the mistake of spending a lot of money here on a bearded dragon/tank and supplies. I hadn't done much research yet and here are a few things to note. Damien the guy that was helping me was very friendly and appeared knowledgable to me. Then I started doing my research. I was told that Bearded Dragons can be expected to live around 15 years. False. Actually the world record Beardy life span is 15 years. you can expect around 12 if your doing it right. Next he tried to sell me a couple big bags of sand to use as a substrate in my tank. Not only is this bad for your dragon it can eventually kill them. ingestion of sand that happens when they eat their crickets (he neglected to mention a separate feeding tank as well) can lead to impaction. It screws up their digestive system. Not to mention that Beardies assess their environment using their tongue and will ingest Sand this way as well. The last thing that really dissapointed me was this. The juvenile Dragon they had there, after doing a lot of reading, I realized was way to mellow. Healthy dragons will take interest in you as you approach their tank and this guy was very nonchalant about the whole thing, not to mention he told me they were keeping more in the back. Why aren't they on the floor in the light where they can recieve the attention that bearded dragons thrive on. Lastly when I tried to call Damien to speak further about my project no one would tell me when he would be in or when I could come down and talk to him. I thought this was very rude considering the amount of money I was about to waste in their store. On top of that the store manager told me he would have Damien get in touch with me (after refusing to help out in anyway with reserving the dragon I wanted for a couple days) and well as I'm sure you've guessed by now I was never contacted. Horrible customer service, unknowledgable staff, poor conditions (At least as far as the bearded dragons were concerned) and they could care less about a potential $400-$500 sale. All in all I'm glad it went down like this. I since have aqquired a beautiful vivarium at a great price on CL and I will be taking my business to The Vivarium in Berkeley CA where I am sure they have much healthier and happier reptile. So if anybody I talked to at Petco reads this, I'm sure you may remember me and now you know why I never did and never will return. My experience with you was a joke. read more

After a few years of taking my dogs here for grooming, I've decided it's time to pull the plug. While they have a great selection of petfood, toys, and other stuff (not to mention the chinchillas!!!), the grooming salon has let me down one too many times. My first dog --a 100 lb. hairy beast -- got groomed here a few times. The first time went well. The second time, she went home with razor burn on her behind ... and spent more than 4 hours there. The second time the razor burn was so bad we had to go to the vet for ointment. The next time we went, the groomer accidentally nicked a mole between her paws. She bandaged it up, which was really considerate of her, but it wasn't "fine" like she promised. My baby ended up needing stitches. (Petco covered some or most of that bill, I think). But they refused to groom her after that. My current dog was in desperate need of grooming a week ago. She picked up fleas somewhere, and the staff assured us that would be taken care of. We asked for a buzz cut, too. I asked to be called on my cell when my dog was ready ... but (surprise, surprise), they called the home phone and my dog spent an extra 2 hours waiting. To make things worse, my baby came back with BAAAD razor burn on her behind. So bad, that when I took her for a walk after getting home, all she would do was sit on the grass and lick herself. It's been a week and she still does that from time to time. AND SHE STILL HAS FLEAS!!! The only positive was the price: less than $50 for grooming, anti-flea shampoo, nail clipping, and tooth brushing. However, the staff seemed tired and grumpy ... and a little gruff. Looks like we'll be shelling out another $50 for some Advantage anti-flea drops. And looking for a better groomer. read more

Not much to say about this place. It's a store, like so many others that takes advantage of a person's love for their pet by charging rediculous prices. The staff is friendly, but I have my doubts that they know what they're talking about. I asked for some allergy food for my dog and told them his allergies. They then recommended two brands that had the very things he is allergic to in them. I really wish that they would either hire specifically to find people with pet love and knowledge of products, or at least spend time training them well on the different products and what they have to offer. In the end, I can ususally find some way to spend money here, but I wish I didn't. read more

Awful experience. Will not be back. I have shopped at this location weekly since I got my dog about 2.5 years ago. When I began shopping I got a Pals Card (Petco's way of giving discounts, marketing, and tracking purchases). In order to take advantage of my Pals Card I enter my phone number. I am ALWAYS asked if I am Matt or Steven (Not sure who "Matt" is). Today, on my weekly trip, I entered my phone number for my Pals savings and nothing came up. The clerk asked again for the number and I gave it to her and she keyed it in. Still nothing. I have $96 in purchases, so I want my savings. The clerk states that I can pay full price and then call an 800# to get my savings. Yeah right. And what happens if they can't find my Pals account either. I tell the clerk that I'm not calling an 800# and the clerk states, "I'm not sure what else to do...." I thanked the clerk and walked out, leaving her to void my purchase. I was stunned the clerk was so poolry trained that she didn't know to call over a manager so that she could give me my discount. Also, the clerk behind her had just ordered me 2 cases of dog food for pick up the following week. (Cancel that order, by the way....). Idiots. This review is for the Petco grooming department since I get all my other pet supplies at Pet Food Express (which, btw, I highly recommend for good quality pet food.) After our last fiasco with the Petsmart grooming department, the bf and I were extremely hesitant to take our dog into get groomed again. We even resorted to attempting to cut his hair ourselves (mission: failed miserably.) So, with flea season on the horizon and the summer heat making Thomas one big sweaty mess, we finally caved and decided to bring him in. We are extremely happy with the service we receive here. We're always greeted with a smile and they even remember Thomas. Thomas actually loves coming here to get groomed, and he always comes out looking so sweet and clean. It can get really busy on the weekends, but we don't mind dropping him off for a few hours while we run errands. read more
