I went in to look at fish with a few friends, and while walking past the entirety of the fish tanks, we saw graveyards and tragedy. At first, we were seeing some cheaper fish, then soon realized that if you are a cheap fish, your likelihood of survival is low... there were near 60 deceased fish in total. They were floating upside down, sucked into shreds in the filter, stiff and lifeless bodies in piles in the corners... In addition to this, there was a very large fish shoved behind a filter also lifeless! Lastly, the goldfish tank was an absolute monstrosity. It was foggy, dirty, no food present, no light in either their tanks or their souls. We actively watched two goldfish die and drift off in the water. I'm disgusted and disappointed Petco. Vicky lied straight to us, saying that these fish were recently checked on and someone is with the fish, cleaning their tanks every day. If this were true, the graveyard in the corner with fish dead so long their eyes were gone would have been removed correct? Anyways, astronomically distrusted. read more

Terrible experience at this Petco. We had just moved to the area and needed to get our golden retriever groomed. We made an appointment on the same day online, as there was availability, for a wash and trim. When I came in, the tech working with us was approachable. She asked for his record for rabies vaccine. I showed her his vaccine list, which included "rabies vaccine, 1 year" and the date that it was given - clearly not expired. The tech responded "not good enough I need the certificate," in a very rude tone. This was news because I've never had a tech need this information when confirming rabies vaccine in the past since it was Very clearly listed, but okay. I called the vet and got the certificate and showed it to her. The tech was also disgruntled because she thought he was only for a bath and seemed upset upon rechecking his visit was actually for a bath and trim. During this time, the tech decided to inspect my dog and said he had an ear infection. I mentioned that goldens can very often get inflammation in the ear but doesn't mean there is growth of anything. (This has been an ongoing problem with my golden). She needed to get a second opinion from her manager. At this point, I could tell the tech was just fishing for ways to get this appointment cancelled. I stated we were just gonna cancel and leave. She then mentioned that it was best because vet visits can go to 6000$ from an ear infection complication. I wasn't aware that groomer specialists doubled as vets in their spare time. I am a professional in medicine and can say this is just untrue. Kind of my last straw at this point. It was an unfortunate visit as it seems like they just didn't want to work. I don't want her to touch my dog so I will not be visiting this location for grooming services again. read more

I have had terrible experiences at most Petcos however Thopsham recently redeemed itself the girl that helped me with advice last weekend on a GHa outbreak (totally my fault) in my reef tank was really helpful and knew who to call when her store didn't have the fish I needed. She put me on the path to the South Portland store where I got plenty of help from knowledgeable staff. Although learning about petcos corporate policy on not accepting salt fish returns if they are sick or pass was shocking Thopsham and South Portland fish were well taken care of and properly QT so I wouldn't hesitate to buy from them again. I purchased a Lawnmower Blenny and some crabs here that are doing amazing! read more

I really enjoy coming here. I love what they carry for my pets and when they have a sale, it's definitely worth it! The employees are very helpful and always polite and easy to talk too. I also enjoy seeing the live animals they carry (almost came home with not 1, but 3 guinea pigs...almost ), and sometimes they feature cats and dogs from local humane societies. This location is well out of my way, but convenient when I am traveling in the area and need to pick something up last minute. The staff is very friendly and I have not had any bad interactions. I agree with some of the other reviews where they state you are greeted once you walk in the door. It's a nice welcoming feeling. Where they lose 2 stars is in the organization of their store. I understand the layout is different than many stores I have been to, but there are always pallets and sometimes pallets with the pallet jack still attached just sitting there with no one offloading. I usually have to walk around it to get to where I need to go because it's blocking what is normally a pathway to get to an aisle. It can be a bit difficult to orient yourself to the layout to understand where the dog items are as they tend to be in the back of the store, where in other stores they are more towards the front. read more

Took my 10 yr. old chiweenie today for his ridiculously long nails to be cut and have his anal glands cleaned out. He is very nervous and afraid when anyone handles his paws and runs away when I attempt to cut his nails hence the ridiculously long length. I WAS AMAZED when he came out 10 minutes later and everything he needed was completely finished and I MUST say "Perfectly". All the credit goes to Emma-leigh ! Marie from Petco in Topsham likes to harass single moms & their 2 year old children because we didn't know the answer to her question. Looking at gold fish with my daughter today at the Topsham Petco, which we visit frequently & was told by Marie (sales associate) that she was uncomfortable selling me a gold fish because I didn't know what size fish tank I had at home off the top of my head... Whatever, no problem, she's just doing her job making sure gold fish go in proper sized tank, I thank her for helping me anyways and she walks away. But as I'm looking at the fish tanks with my daughter, Marie approached me aggressively & told me I needed to leave. Then she started screaming in the middle of the store, causing a scene that she asked me to leave cause she's uncomfortable with selling me a 20 cent fish.... Would avoid this Petco (at least when teenage, short haired blonde named MARIE is working). Seems extremely mentally unstable & customer service is definitely NOT the right job for her. I called to complain about customer service to manager, Sophie was who I was told I was talking to, who seemed disinterested, didn't care, no personality, no apology. What is going on with the staff in the fish department? Want to purchase a couple $4 fish? Make sure you come prepared with a written plan. Staff will grill you on every aspect of owing a simple beta, goldfish, or whatever you may choose. Unprofessional staff really don't want to sell them, they'd rather scoop up dead ones as so many tanks have at least one dead fish floating or being devouring by the others. If staff provided facts and education, that would be wonderful. Instead they condescendingly quiz you on every aspect of fish, and try to talk you out of it, or talk you into upsizing the tank. This is the THIRD time this has happened. All done with Petco. read more

Went here again to purchase just some fish bugs and some mealworms for my frogs and the fish bugs were dead(advertised as they would be able to reproduce and culture), and the mealworms died after a day, and only half of the 50 were alive to begin with. I try to just get basic supplies and it still falters. The customer service was much better this time around, there was a young adult man who was very kind. Don't know his name but he had brown hair and I believe a blue mask on. read more

I just want to start off with how friendly the staff that work in the front are. I have been looking into buying a guinea pig for the kids, and they are so knowledgeable, helpful, and polite. However, we have gone in a few times now to look into fish tanks and buying more fish and this one woman who works there, I believe her name is Hiedi, is not nice or helpful at all. Each time she has either spoken to us in a very rude or judge tone, or straight out said we should come back to buy fish when we went to buy fish. We will be buying our fish somewhere else. She is rude, and has horrible customer service skills. This is sad since the rest of the staff are super nice and helpful. read more

For the last several months we have had an issue with Petco selling the proper food for bearded dragons. It seems they never have crickets or the proper bugs for them. When I've asked associates about this and if they know when they'll be getting more crickets or bugs, I receive shrugs as an answer. Yet they continue to sell lizards knowing they hardly ever have the food to sell to go with them. I understand there can be issues with suppliers but it is awful for a business to sell animals knowing they won't get the right food. Had a dog grooming appt today for my two dogs. We have been customers for a few years now. When we got there they refused to groom them because they were on Zoloft. They changed this policy last week is what I was told. They should have called and informed us instead of wasting over an hour of my time bringing them to then be told. This review is about the attitude and behavior of one of the groomers, Ray (sp?), who happens to be the grooming manager of the Topsham, Maine store. We were very happy with our dog's former groomer there, Gabriella, who must have left Petco. I had an appointment with Ray last week to have our wheaten groomed. When we got there, she noticed my dog had an active hot spot, and told me to bring him back when it had dried out. She also told me she would have to cut the mats from under his ears. Both suggestions were fair enough. Today I brought my dog back for his rescheduled appointment. She said he was now too matted to brush and she would have to shave him down to his skin. I have owned this boy for 12 years and yes, he gets some mats here and there, but he only had a couple of them today. He has never had to be shaved to the skin. His regular groomer in Boston takes the time to brush them out and to groom him so he looks beautiful, not hairless. This groomer, Ray, clearly did not have the time for or interest in grooming my pup correctly. In fact, she said brushing mats can cause "hematomas." She just wanted to shave him and be done with it. I cancelled the appointment, and we left and went to directly to Petsmart in Brunswick. The groomer was very pleasant, and said my dog's mats weren't bad, so they could groom him with no problem. I'm so happy I did not allow Ray to shave my dog's hair down to his skin, which would have been traumatizing for us both! Between her bad attitude and her obvious laziness, she has made sure that my dog will never return to Petco as long as she is an employee. read more

On my third attempt to get my dog groomed they refused to see her when we arrived because my dog takes an anxiety medication. There is nothing about that mentioned when you book an appointment. I am not a huge box store fan, but this place doesn't offend. Every time I walk in the door, someone at the register greets me. The aisles are clean, shelves are tidy, and sections are well marked. When I have questions about cat food their is usually someone in the nearby vicinity to help me out. I am a fan that they have cats from the local shelter near their door to encourage people to adopt. I always feel like I need to take them all home with me!! I also enjoy that I can just enter my phone number to access my reward card instead of saying it out loud for all to hear or trying to dig through my purse for one of 100 reward cards. read more

Cannot stand this chain or this particular store. Having recently moved to Maine I had some trouble located a good place to buy GOOD food and treats for my dog and until I could find it Petco was going to have to do. The first time I went I took my pup, Indy to help me explore this big box store. This was the first and last time he accompanied me. Indy has been through puppy training and intermediate training with a wonderful trainer in Maryland, I know what he has been taught and I know how to give commands. A trainer came up to indy and without asking began giving him commands using different hand signals and assuring me he knew how to do tricks he had never been taught. The thought of making my dog perform for my amusement is repugnant to me, let alone some stranger confusing him for her own ego. Not to mention that she was giving him treats without asking if she could. Sounds like a small issue but Indy had massive surgery on his intestines and stomach this year and has a restricted diet. A trainer should know better. The food selection at any Petco leaves quite a bit to be desired so I won't shop here anymore for regular food. I bought some toys that were part of a Petco specific brand for him this Christmas from this store. All of the toys I bought except for the Nylabone were shredded by noon on Christmas. Obviously not worth the money. If you need supplies for your furry or scaly friends go to Ames True Value. So much better. read more

The grooming department is amazing, customer service is on point and very accommodating. The dogs that come out look beautiful and they are so happy! Staff is very nice Self wash pet station was awful! It was not cleaned prior to me going in with my dog. Old dog fur in drain, all around the basin and the dog door was so filthy and full of fur I choose to leave it up. I don't think that basin area had been cleaned in a few days as there were fur pieces everywhere. If it was busy, maybe I could see this but it wasn't. Also, the towels were full of bottled fur balls and dirty grey looking even though the nice staff person said they were washed and dried. I choose not to give my dog a full bath and dry, just a quickie and used the blower instead of towels. I have been to several petco and unleashed petcos and have never seen such a dirty basin area. Decided to ask if they had the item we were looking for (an extra large reflective vest - hunting season in Maine and a buff colored dog don't mix well) and the guy on the phone said yes. We arrived a bit before 8 and they didn't have the item. Asked a girl if they had more in back and she said in a sing song voice "no, we don't, what we have is out there, they sell fast". when dropping my dog off to get a bath, not only did I have to wait 15 minutes for them to take her. but I had to listen to the workers SCREAM at other dogs while waiting.. they were screaming so loud you could hear them over the whining/barking of the dogs in another room being blow dried!!! it made me nervous to leave my dog with those women, completely unacceptable. I moved to Maine last summer and my Bichon Frisee has been groomed 3 times at Petco. I am delighted with the job Caitlyn has done. In 20 years of owning Bichons, she is the first one to do it correctly. Charlie looks clean and adorable when I pick him up. The salon is clean and well organized and the staff seem to really love dogs. We will continue to be regular customers. read more

Solid establishment catering to people who would go without food, shelter, heat, and running water in order to cater to their pet's every whim and need. Dress up clothes for your kitty? Check. The beauty bow for cats who have that itch on their back that's impossible to scratch? Check again. A treat bar where humans get so engrossed in the variety of flavors and biscuits that prevent allergic reactions to a variety of dietary needs that they misplace their debit card? Check. Of course Petco does sell actual live animals but does encourage adoption and did have one lonely little kitty cat named Mabel who I would have taken home if it hadn't been for the excitable border collie/lab mix waiting in the back seat of my car. Plus Mabel would have had to be initiated into the the Minnie/Muffin gang in order to survive chez moi. Anyhoo, as new parents to Ladybug, I found new and interesting ways to forego necessities to make sure that LB is outfitted properly. I must say that the bathrooms at PetCo were clean and well lit. There is also a grooming service and I found the young woman who waited on us a lot friendlier than the two at PetSmart in Biddeford. read more

I will never go back!! I I have never seen a chop job this bad in my life. I was very specific to kristy k of what I wanted her to do. Her face is so uneven and so it the top of her head. I asked for her butt to be cut because the hair was to long. She didn't do that either I had to go back in and make her cut it again. just took three dogs over to Pam..... know she worked all day on them as i called a couple of times and she was still working on them..... two of them i knew would do well with the shampoo/cut and trimming of nails ..... but the third one, a six yr old Westie, not been groomed but a couple of times and acted up to the point the other groomers would just have to quit.. so two dogs would come home looking spiffy clean and groomed but the third one would be half cut nails not trimmed .... meeting Pam and talking to her as she was hugging all my poochies and them loving it i decided if anyone could do this she could...... i want to tell all i have three of the most groomed dogs in Brunswick... Pam worked hard with my 6yr Westie and it worked out... she got groomed and bathed and nails clipped.... i owe a great deal of thanks to Pam... She is a sweet gal and loves all creatures, big and small... and humans also.... go and try your favorite pet with her, you will love all the attention you and doggie get and you will be pleased with the results....
