I stopped by this location to find a harness and leash for my cat. It was clean and organized. I found what I was looking for and also found some of their clearance sections where I was able to pick up a few other things. They have an extensive variety of refrigerated and frozen animal food options. More than I've seen other places. Check out took a bit longer than expected as the employee was talking to the customers at the register about some of their services. By the time they had wrapped up the conversation there were 4 different groups online to pay. The cashier was nice and efficient with checking me out. The experience was fine, no real issues and nothing spectacular but I see no reason not to shop here again in the future. read more

I walked in because I wanted to get a guinea pig for my daughter. I did not know much about this animal so naturally I had a lot of questions. I met the most patient, informative and kindest person, her name is Jackie. She took the time to explain everything to me how to care for the animal and what I need to do in order to have the animal live comfortable and healthy. She was very thorough and professional and you can tell that she is genuine and passionate about her job and very knowledgeable.... She took the time to answer all of my questions and would not even accept a tip from me! . I went into petco to buy cat food and as I was walking out of the store, one of the employees screamed across the store "did you pay for that" to my girlfriend and I. As I gave a thumbs up to the woman to ensure my purchase, she continued yelling across the store "let me see your receipt." I was asked if I wanted a receipt before I walked out of the store and I said no. If the woman who rung me up was not still at the front desk, I would have contained to be embarrassed and harassed in front of all the other employees and customers. This was beyond inappropriate and there were better ways for the worker to ask about a receipt rather than screaming across the store and demanding a receipt. Thumbs down Petco of Selden. My husband brought my dog in for vaccinations through this Vetco clinic. We had been using this company for 20 years. I give my dog use heart guard for heartworm . I was at another Vetco's hospital and got a year prescription , 3 months prior. And the incompetent veterinarian said my dog did not have heartworm med and had my husband buy simparica trio . I never used this drug w my dog before and never would . No refunds after purchase. Never using this company again. Very dangerous and just wanted to make a sale . read more

Horrible experience. I went there to get my dog a haircut and the girl refused to cut him, meanwhile I've had him cut there multiple times!! She only offered a wash and nail trim, why would I do that when my dog hasn't had a hair cut in over a year? She wouldn't put clippers on him and said no one else does at this location either, which to me is crazy. So long gone petco, after bringing my dog here for years and then getting denied just put a bad taste in my mouth, I will take my dog to a local mom and pop shop and get him his hair cut there. 0/10 horrible horrible services here. I cannot stand this one particular Petco store! The employees always have a miserable look on Their faces, nobody offers to help you find anything.. just very negative energy there. I took my very well behaved Rottweiler there one time, I dropped his leash for a Split second to get something out of my bag, he was in a 'sit', didn't move an inch.. when an employee came over and scolded me for not holding onto his leash!! If I could give this store 0 stars I wou. Went in today to purchase a gerbil for my grandson. The young man insisted I had a cage for exercise so he would not sell me the gerbils he had. The cage I have and I showed is multilevel with tubes for them to run around. He was rude and went to get his boss. While I was talking to boss he proceeded to fight with my husband because he was bonded with the gerbil. Is it not their job to find homes for these animal. Once I picked up my dog, he was completely different, he was even aggressive with me!! This has never happened before with groomings. I would put a zero if they let me. My wife scheduled a haircut for my dog about a month ago. When I got there today I was asked for his rabies shot card. I said he has a tag on his collar. The girl said no people swap them. So I guess she is calling me a liar? Then asked what vet we use I told her. She was looking up the number. I said I have the number. No I'll look it up she said. I guess she thinks I would lie about that as well? The vet was closed. Then asked is there someone at home to bring the card. When I said no because my wife is at work. This grooming service is a stellar example of how to drive a business into the ground. While the groomer is fairly skillful, the store is unresponsive to calls, generally not available or not even open at the scheduled time and always filled with excuses for the unprofessional approach. The young adults that work there are difficult to locate and speak to the customers like it is the last thing they want to do. My best recommendation is to avoid this store at all costs. read more

PART 2 of the previous review....the post was so long I couldn't post it without cutting It in half!.... about a week later and spoke to a guy on Saturday 2/27 because I haven't heard anything and he said that he had her paperwork in front of him and her last dose of meds was later that night and she should be for sale tomorrow morning. I asked what was wrong and what meds she was on and he said antibiotics for "excessive sneezing" (not an official diagnosis the last time I checked). He said that my name and number were on her paperwork and I would be called when she's ready but I should come in tomorrow morning to make sure no one buys her first since she can't be held....AGAIN out of fear that she would be sold to someone else I went there when the store opened at 10am. The cashier paged Kyle,ANOTHER manager, he then told me "I don't know why he told you that her last dose was yesterday she has 4 more days of meds"....so I was lied to....he said the vets was due to come in between Tuesday 3/2 and Thursday 3/4 and she could possibly be cleared before than. he assured me that they had my name and number and they would call me. I hadn't heard anything thru Wednesday night so I went there to get an update and Nicole (yet ANOTHER manager) was very nasty with me. She said the vet hasn't come in yet. And brought up the fact I had contacted corporate about this whole situation, a very clear reason for her nastiness. She told me Tristan was fired. ( you know the guy they claimed called me and spoke with me?? more lies) And told me Kyle had no right to tell me he'd call me when the ferret was ready and they don't do that and flat out refused to notify me when the ferret was cleared from the vet. I asked to speak to Kyle so I could find out why I was lied to AGAIN and she refused to tell me when he would be in next. So I said that's fine ill come in when the store opens and see if he's in then. I told Jimmy about Nicole being nasty and he told me that there's no reason someone can't give me a courtesy call and took down my name and number again and said he's just waiting on the vet to clear her (and a few other animals in the back that have been sick...apparently.this is a common thing) he said hopefully today and he'll let me know as soon as she's good to go. He also said Kyle would be in later (something that Nicole couldn't tell me because she was afraid of stalkers...ummm I just want to buy the damn ferret...I have no interest in Kyle or anyone else here...I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this) Not to mention but when I walked in there last night and went by the ferret tank the original lady cleaning tanks gave me a dirty look and whipped her phone out and started typing furiously at Nicole or whoever that I was there (while she was helping a customer...completely unprofessional if nothing else). So I waited until 7pm and went there again since I was told no one would call me I would have to periodically check in and she if she's back on the floor, also to talk to Kyle and ask him why he said he would call me when Nicole said he wouldn't and she would be talking to him (aka reprimanding him)......I asked the girl cashier to page Kyle and she went to do so and the other guy Matt (he was there last night when i was arguing with Nicole about all the shady practices of this store) said oh you're hear about the female ferret right? She passed, she died....and I was like " what do you mean she died?! I just talked to Jimmy today and he said he was just waiting for the vets clearance and she was fine!" When we asked why she was there for so long and not ready they told us that we were required to pay an extra charge. This isn't the first time my dog has been mistreated. This one in particular will have maybe 2-4 bettas at a given time sitting in a small cup of their waste/and or floating on their sides with clear swim bladder issues. I would not be surprised if their water never gets changed in their time on the shelves. And not only do they carry tiny bowls and filterless "tanks" for betta, 2 gallon tanks with "betta dividers", ect, but they actively promoted the use of them for bettas. Aquarist team should do better and not promote inadequate care, but not surprising since they provide inadequate. I don't even want to know how malnourished their reptiles probably are. If I could give zero stars, I would. Negative 5 stars! They. Legitimately. Are. The. Most. Unprofessional. Dog. Groomers. I've ever seen in my life. My dog looks like he was skinned raw. They told me he had a couple knots in his beautiful thick fluffy fur so they had to go a bit short. He looks like a hairless cat. He's also 100% traumatized. Not exaggerating. Very curious as to wth happened during this grooming session but never wanna step a foot there again to inquire. Please do not ever take your dog there. This place is horrendous and truly needs to be reported for animal abuse. I watched unsatisfied costumers leaving the day I brought my dog and I should've taken him and ran the other way but I stupidly gave them my 7 year old Maltese for a standard grooming only to come back to a borderline mutilated, disfigured version of my dog. I don't live here and I'm only in town to help my sister in law with her newborn so I just looked up the nearest Petco and thought "they're everywhere and must offer standardized care". I was wrong. This review has more to do with staff than stock, merchandise, etc... There's a kind, young, woman cashier who hands out false, incorrect, medical advice. I was there recently, purchasing food for my pet. As a veterinary healthcare professional who went to school to provide medical care to animals, I feel that I have a good grasp on what is appropriate/true information. The cashier told me why I was buying the wrong food, what I should be feeding my pet, and why I should reconsider my purchase. I was completely taken aback. The information she gave me was not just an off-color opinion, it was factually incorrect. I believe she is innocent and means well, but I would just be wary about ANY pet advice coming from this specific location. Where do I start??? (A full investigation has been initiated at this store by corporate so buyer beware)... A few weeks ago I noticed a cute sweet female ferret. I inquired about her and they told me that she is being held for observation because they just got her in (The only Petco in the area that does this by the way) I called a week later and they told me she was off observation at the end of the day and would be for sale the following day. I tried to pre-buy her like other pet stores allow and they wouldn't let me so I went in when the store opened in fear that someone else was interested. I came in and spoke to Tristan (the manager). He said he'd get the ferret and to meet him in the back and he'd help me after he was done with a customer. I went back by the ferret and the lady in the back that cleans the cages who was very rude said " this ferret is not for sale". And I asked her why I was told the ferret was for sale as of today and she said yeah but she sneezed this morning and I told Tristan not to sell her". I was like "well I just talked to Tristan and he was meeting me back here to get her" so she went to him and whispered to him and he came and told me that he couldn't sell her and they had to wait for the vet....I asked him when the vet was coming in and he said he doesn't know...the manager doesn't know??? Not only that but he didn't remember a conversation that he supposedly just had about the ferret sneezing since the store had just opened??? Something was clearly suspect but I left. The ferret by the way was healthy in appearance with no symptoms of illness or lethargy or sneezing like they claimed and she was very playful and was eating and jumping around. I have had alot of experience with ferrets and I know she was healthy. Tristan (who has since been magically fired) had gotten my name and number and told me he would call me when the vet saw her and she was cleared for sale. I had to go in there for other reasons and noticed there were 2 ferrets in her place and she was gone (I asked them where she was and they said she was in the back under vet care)....the only problem was that the case was absolutely filthy and there was a mountain of feces in the corner. there's no way that caged was cleaned recently. according to them the new ferrets just came in earlier that day.. there's no way they defecated that much in that little time. so if the ferret I wanted was SO sick why wasn't the cage cleaned out before the new ferrets were put in there??? to get them sick? I contacted corporate and told them I was getting the runaround and things werent adding up. corporate told me they contacted the store and they said Tristan called me and the cage WAS cleaned and disinfected. so they lied AGAIN....Tristan never called me and I'm willing to provide a call log from my cell phone company...and that cage most definitely was NOT cleaned in between the female ferret that was supposedly sick and the new ferrets.. so either they were lying about her being sick ooooorrr they don't care about the other animals they get in (BUY ELSEWHERE!!!)... read more

Place is a bit messy (There was smeared dog poo on the floor...and shame on the owner who probably did not report it or bring a doggy bag) Employees dont seem too happy to be there. I think this is a great petco. The cashiers are always nice and helpful.I usually come to petco early so the floor is clean and well stocked. I usually go for dog stuff and there is always a good selection. I brought my dog to the low cost vaccination event and it was great. There was a bit of a wait, I got there around 10:15 and she didnt get to see the vet until 11. I would definitely come back and get her shots, but come around 10am. read more

During one of my visits to the Vetco clinic where the technician was intoxicated let go of my dog with a syringe in her leg tried to run down the aisle, and thank God I was there to stop her. On several other occasions they have put items in the wrong spot blamed customers did not honor the prices and are very argumentative. UPDATE: Store manager called regarding issue and they were very apologetic and understanding. Will consider doing business w/again. I frequent the Selden,NY location for supplies. I'm an experienced aquarium keeper. Today I decided to treat myself and my lonely 20L tank to some fish as it only housed one betta and a snail. I decided on two Albino Corys and three snails. She recommended that I get multiple corys, as they need to be in groups. This is true. But I only wanted albino corys. And I only saw two at the time, so I purchased those. My betta couldn't care less about corys. I've housed this specific betta with other common tank mates such as oto and cory catfish, neon tetras, pleco etc with no issue. I needed to go back later that day for supplies but the stuff was overpriced. Since I was already there, I looked around and noticed they had two more catfish, Great. I wanted to have three instead of just the two anyway. So I decided to buy one more. There was, a guy with long unkempt straggly hair who was helping a woman aquatics a few feet away; so I stood waiting for assistance nearby so he could help me when he was finished. Well, he never even acknowledged my presence in the department, and eventually just left altogether. After finding no assistance on the floor. I went to the front registers. There was a woman in a blue apron. However she was a sales rep for an outside company, but she tried helping me anyway. She asked a man in a dress shirt who was standing around near the front registers, if he was on break. He muttered "yeah" while drinking a beverage. "The woman then asked "well is there anyone who can help this customer who wants a fish?" And the gentleman muttered "yeah in a minute" Nice attitude; What kind of responses are these from an employee? If you're on break, go to the break room. If you can't assist customers why are you even on the sales floor? Anyway, he sent the back young longhaired unkempt guy who had ignored me earlier. This guy proceeded to ask me, if I had a tank and what was in it, I responded "yes, one male betta and two Cory catfish and a few snails." He then said he was going to refuse the sale. I quote "I can not sell you this fish with the knowledge that you are going to put it with a fish bred for fighting." What the heck is this guy talking about? The fish that he was referring to is a common tank mates betta are kept with. Baffled, I simply said, this won't be a problem. I have a betta with two already with no issue. He then asked me about my tank size; he then lectured me in a condescending manner about how my tank was "too small" and that I was "maxing out my tank capacity" I couldn't help but notice, that the tank on the stores display behind him, that housed four cory catfish and a large group of at LEAST 15 tetras in a tank no larger than 20 gallons. Not to mention this store houses lots of sick, diseased, dead, or dying bettas in tiny cups with no heater and no filtration. I wasn't about to argue with someone who didn't know what they were saying. I explained that I already currently have corys housed with my betta; that I purchased fish earlier; that I simply wanted one more to help them feel more comfortable in a school of at least three. Obnoxiously he says, "corys aren't schooling fish". Wow; its common knowledge in the fish community that corys often shoal together! However, it's not my job to educate petco staff so I replied "corys are social fish and are more comfortable in groups" He says "Well fine, I'll sell you the fish without a guarantee, so you can't get a refund if it dies" I responded, that's fine. As I know my set up is more than adequate. however this guy was clearly more interested in hearing himself talk anything else. My tank being planted provides its own natural filtration and Aeration. I have a 30 gallon internal filter, and additinal HOB 10 gallon filter; exceeding the biological and mechanical filtration needs. I feed algae wafers, and vegetables to algae eaters and snails so theres no shortage of food. However he decided to lecture me about how I have too many algae eaters in one tank anyway. After this ordeal. I decided to call the petco 800 number. This guy needs more training in customer service and aquatics knowledge. The Help line was of no help at all. she called the store I guess to get their side. The phone rep tried to justify the situation by parroting what the store employee said while failing to address any concerns about the degrading and condescending attitude. I found it funny that the phone rep backed up the employee despite the fact that she stated she has no pet knowledge. However this didn't stop her from agreeing with the story she was told by the sales associate from the I won't be doing business petco anymore if they don't fix the situation and defend staff that are uneducated and disrespectful. read more

I will never go to this petco again. Yesterday I brought my two dogs in for a routine nail clipping. I usually go to petco in Baldwin but we moved to the area recently and needed somewhere closer. They took both my dogs and shoved them in cages. One of my dogs is a new rescue and the other is epileptic and has seizures in high stress situations. I did not know why they were putting them in cages for just a nail clipping. They then told us we booked a bath which was completely false. They said my husband called and booked them for a bath. A complete lie as i was with him when he called for the nail clipping. They then took my epileptic dog out for the nail clipping and were extremely rough with him. My new rescue was left in the cage crying and I had to demand they take him out and give him back to him. The woman cutting my one dogs nails handed him back to me with a loud, obnoxious "you're welcome!" So not only was this upsetting for me but my new rescue dog is traumatized as well as my epileptic dog. I would go into further detail but i already wrote that to corporate. More happened but I'm just too upset to write it out again. Bottom line is this, all the stories of petco groomers mistreating animals are true. Stay away. Everyone in that grooming department should be fired. read more

I use to take my dogs here to be groomed and had no issues. When I got my new puppy, the staff had changed and my usual groomer had left. I asked for a puppy cut. When I came to pick him up the dog was cowering in the corner of the cage and he was horse from, what I assume was crying. Now I can't even take a clipper near him without the dog becoming completely aggressive and terrified. My dog NEVER acted this way prior to me bringing him here. From the behaviors that he demonstrates, I believe that someone here abused him. If I could give this store a no star rating I would! Words can't describe how upset I am right now. BEWARE OF THE GROOMING DEPARTMENT. I went twice to the one in Selden, NY and had a horrible experience with how they groomed my dog. They cut him and he had burn marks. I decided to start going to the one in Lake Grove, NY and had amazing experiences. I decided to give the one in Selden a shot again and what a God awful experience. I brought my dog in at 12:00pm. It was 4:30pm and I hadn't heard from them so I called. I was told they needed another hour. 5:30pm comes and goes. I speak to them at 6:00 and was told theyre going to cut more hair. Really? I brought him in at 12:00pm and you're telling me at 6:00pm you need to cut more hair? Mind you, he had a hair cut about 2 months ago so he wasn't even bad and also, he's a 10lb tiny dog. I call again at 7:00pm because I'm worried and they had JUST finished. My dog hadn't eaten all day and was dying of thirst when I got home. I'm upset, they had him for 7 hours and not once did they call for a few seconds and provide some kind of update. On top of that, they charged an additional $25 for a "spa treatment." EXCUSE ME? I asked you to CUT HIS HAIR not give him a spa treatment!!! Never was that mentioned! The rest of the staff is amazing but the grooming department either needs to be fired or re-trained because THEY SUCK. read more

Grooming Services - names will not be inked here.....anywho the old woman groomer is the most discourteous person you ever want to come across. I took my pet there for a grooming service and had to deal with her. The end result was a free $60 service. I contacted Petco's headquarters and was advised to speak with their Manager which I did. I should have followed my gut instinct when my pet pulled back on the leash and refused to budge. Anyone who is mean to an animal should never be trusted. read more

I was a regular customer of this Petco and had my dog groomed by Doreen who unfortunately no longer works there. I was skeptical about going back after Doreen had left because there's a bunch of kids working there but decided to make an appointment. Appointment with made two weeks prior and I discussed with the girl making sure she had the rabies certificate from the vet, I was assured that she would get it and if there was an issue she would call me back. I have never had a problem with my veterinarian and was told by the vet's office that it was sent. My appointment was for Saturday morning and I received the follow-up phone call from Petco Friday night at 8 to confirm. Morty who made the phone call, has no clue as to what planet he is on. When I asked if they had the certificate as I did not want to take the dog in first thing in the morning to be turned away he explained how there was nothing in the fax machine. I told him 6 times that it was faxed 2 weeks ago and maybe he needed to look elsewhere. MORITY then suggested maybe he should call the vet at 8:20 p.m. on a Friday night. When I explain to him that the vets office has been closed for hours as it's a Friday night and now it's going on a 8:30 he still could not comprehend that. I thought I would have better luck with the store manager so after being left on hold for 10 minutes I just thought it to call back to hopefully get a manager on the phone. Neither one was capable of checking to see if they had the certificate and neither one head any interest in helping me at this point I still had no idea if I should be taking this dog in 2 be groomed or if he would even be groomed. I was told by the manager that he really didn't want to deal with this at this hour on a Friday night and was going to hang up the phone on me. Not only was the manager rude he spoke over me and didn't allow me to finish a sentence. Way to go Petco great customer service, I never got a phone call the next day either and I left a message for the district manager at the corporate office and he or she has yet to return my call. Apparently Petco has no regard for customers and has no clue of the meaning of customer service lucky for me there are plenty of groomers in the area that would be happy to take my money. read more
