Now, the 1 star review for the Petsmart on Route 112 in Port Jeff Station. 2 weeks ago our fur babies Shelly and Jax the Chihuahuas need to have their nails trimmed. Having seen the sign outside the Port Jeff Petsmart advertising $10 nail trims, we brought them over. Meeting up with Amy, she did a good job in trimming them down and them grinding them to a smooth finish.(Thus the 1 star) We were charged $40 for the 2 dogs only to find out it was an additional $10 per dog to use the grinder. Ok, Should has asked in the beginning...my bad. We made an appointment to have them groomed 2 weeks later for a Saturday at 9am and received an appointment card showing the date and time. We arrived at 8:55 for our 9 am appointment on the designated day, Amy said "My bad, the appointment was for 11 and to come back at 11, bye" despite the card showing 9 am as the appointment time. She then took the card and changed the 9 to 11. My wife stunned, said we could not come back at 11 since we already had plans for the day and asked for the manager's name and was told she wouldn't be in until 11. My wife called back and spoke to Amanda who said in a rude tone, "What do you want me to do about it?" Obviously, she has no manager skills. So my wife hung up. We made an appoint at another groomer in the meantime and will not return to Petsmart in Port Jefferson despite its very convenient location. I've read other bad grooming reviews for this store, so I see that I'm not too far from accurate. Bottom line, take your grooming elsewhere. This staff is pathetic.

We brought our puppy here at 1 years old - a small wild, energetic Jack Russell who knew every time I was on a video meeting to bark his head off and embarrass me EVERY TIME! Walks were out of the question since he would pull on the leash to the point he would choke himself... sitting on the deck was a nightmare in our own backyard because he would bark at the wind (yes, the wind), the leaves moving, the birds and obviously the neighbors. Does this sound familiar? I questioned my decision of getting a puppy and then I found Max K9. We did a 3 week Board & Train where I was super hesitant of dropping him off (because no one wants to leave their baby anywhere), but they were so good with sending video progress and pictures and including my husband and I in the process. I joke with everyone that I think they implanted a program into his brain! Lol! The transformation was unreal. We were instantly able to communicate with him and actually go on a walk.. outside in the real world. What a breath of fresh air, literally! Max K9 has given us the ability to live an active lifestyle and have our pup enjoy it with us. Stormie is a rescue who we adopted in 2019 and underwent 2 surgeries in 2021 due to bilateral CCL surgery. She was cooped up for an extended amount of time during recovery. We were unable to take her outside without her reacting to other dogs and sometimes even people. Stormie even gave us difficulty when we wanted to go for a short walk. It was so frustrating and difficult taking her out in public that we needed help. We have heard of Maximum K9 from many of our friends and even the great reviews I've seen on dog groups and online. I called to inquire about the types of training (group vs. individual) and it was clear that we needed to take private lessons. We signed up for a package of 6 lessons with Sherry that were one hour long for 6 consecutive weeks. Our first day, Sherry got to know about Stormie's behaviors - positive and negative, what we were having difficulty with and what our goals were. Sherry worked with us each week when training Stormie (and me) on how to modify or progress a skill. We learned how to heel, which we never were taught from another trainer elsewhere, and the importance of heel. We were given homework on what to practice from the training sessions to continue our work outside of the facility. Sherry helped Stormie become less dog reactive in a safe manner at Maximum K9. Stormie was slowly exposed to the board and train dogs in the facility that had various levels of size and temperament. Each week, Stormie learned how to follow her commands and not react to different dogs. With Sherry's consistent training, Stormie was able to heel with me in a circle with other dogs and sit next to them without any reaction at all. I cannot find the words to thank Sherry for helping Stormie and myself. I came into Maximum K9 with Stormie trying to pull my arm off and reacting to dogs in the lobby to now leaving with my arm back intact and her in a nice heel. My dog is not the easiest dog to work and Sal promised that we'd be able to trial the following year. Instead, I saw my dog get worse and worse in protection and start picking up bad habits. During the summer of 2025, Sal formed an IGP club called "Unity K9 Schutzhund Group". This club was marketed to myself and other members as a nonprofit club to be affiliated with USCA. Our dues went directly to Sal's personal account and no nonprofit status nor USCA affiliation was ever issued. Dues were required to be prepaid at the beginning of the month in full. Sal often cancelled club lessons, citing weather and car troubles as his excuses. There was no alternate lessons (virtual or in person) offered as a make up. Since the monies were going directly to Sal, we were considered his clients and he had an obligation to provide services, which he often did not. I ended up leaving Unity K9 Schutzhund Club in spring 2026 and terminated my working relationship with Sal. Not every trainer is going to be the right fit for every dog. Sal's misleading communication with his clients and expectations is disappointing. Sal has continued to threaten me regarding bad reviews written by others about their experience with him and my own bad experience.

Additionally, my dog is not an 'easy' dog, he can be standoffish with strangers, but every staff member knew how to approach him without my having to comment, and he settled in really well. I appreciate especially their honesty when I asked if Arlo played with any other dogs - instead of lying to me and saying "of course!" without thinking, they explained to me that he needs to get used to a new environment and that "the play will come." That answer was stellar, and I feel comfortable knowing that staff will give me uncomfortable truths when they are needed rather than sugar coating their answers for a sale. I know my dog well, and their description of his behavior today was on point, I know for a fact that staff was watching him carefully and that makes me happy. I am glad to have a place to bring him now that I no longer work in the industry, it's a huge weight off of my shoulders. As to the reviews stating that the place smells - I have twice walked in during what seemed like rush hour and smelled nothing other than typical 'dog' smell, so I'm not sure what all that is about.
