Lakeshore Petco is a yes! So it's been a while since I came to this location, but Petco Lakeshore is the only location that has everything I need when I'm getting things for my fishy. From the fish food, to the aquarium filters and the random fresh water plants, this is the spot. I do want to glorify the staff here also, they are pretty awesome. Friendly, helpful and knowledgable. This is a perfectly average pet store. They have the standard items -- halfway decent pet foods, toys, litter, leashes - the usual. Services such as grooming are offered, and you can buy the pills that get rid of worms in cats here. So yeah, it's OK for what it is. The problem is that it is expensive. Very expensive. And not only is it expensive when compared to other pet shops in the area, it is expensive when compared to Petco's own website! I took a look at training collars, for example - $60 in store versus $35 online. That kind of sucks. The staff are friendly, but less personable than some local shops. It's fine for what it is, but I don't go out of my way to shop there, and the prices are high. read more

Never ever take your dog to get groomed here. My family has been taking our two dogs here for the past 14 years to get groomed and on New Year's eve, my parents dropped off our dogs and came back to see them almost completely shaved except for their heads and tails. Both dogs were visibly shaking and had knicks all over their bodies. The staff was unprofessional, unapologetic and obviously had no business working with animals or people apparently. My parents had to find an emergency vet to pickup spray so that our dog's open wounds would not get infected and they were jittery and traumatized for days after. Not only should the people responsible be fired, but they should have their whole bodies shaved by unkind amateur barbers during the middle of winter to see how they like it. read more

I am reviewing the fish section of the store (I am not sure about the other pets.) The fish section of the store is in shambles. The selection of fish is always bad, plants come with snails on them, and the fish are almost always sick. I have also got very bad advice from the people who work at the store. My new favorite place to go for fish is Aqua Forest Aquarium. I would recommend Aqua Forest because the service is good, plants are extremely healthy, and fish are really healthy (from my personal experience there.) If Aqua forest is too far away or too expensive, I would recommend PetSmart (in daily city.) Healthier fish there imo. read more

This review is for their stock of dog/puppy products only. I have not tried their grooming services or their classes. In terms of their stock, it is pretty decent and better than the one near my school. They have dog food in stock and have manager specials, which I have not seen at other Petco. And the discounts are substantial. Normally, I just come here for the Sunday 2-3:30pm Luv My Pet Vaccination Clinic. The vet that gives the shot answers any questions you might have. Sometimes they do not have what I wanted in stock- ( that is why a "4" instead of a "5"star) They did not have Dick Van Patton's ( yeah! Terrible. They are rude and clueless. Over the phone, I ask grooming department if they can do two 10 pound dogs and how much. Old lady on the phone then unexpectedly hands off the phone to another person young girl. I ask the young girl how much for a groom. She says she don't know. I then ask why she don't know, why previous person don't know the price and did previous person work in grooming department? Young girl then says she is new and said that old lady is the manager. So happy to have this store on the west side. The parking is easy and convenient. The staff is very nice and clearly all love animals. We appreciate the grooming staff who always try to accomodate a constantly busy service and remain patient and professional and kind to the animals. People seem to have a lot of expectations that this should be some kind of boutique catering experience, but that is not what we want. We just want a friendly, fairly priced neighborhood store with a good selection and good business practices where our dogs can come with us and shop and get a decent haircut. read more

First time Dog owner very satisfied with grooming service I have a Shih Tzu puppy that needed the facial hair trimmed. I initially called Petsmart in Serramonte to see if I could get an appointment. The groomer there told me no appointment needed it's a walk in basis for facial hair trim. But when I got there they told me I needed an appointment and treated me extremely rude. I left there and called Petco on Sloat Blvd in SF and received a completely different experience. They gave me a walk in slot same day and whey I arrived there, I was welcomed with smiles. My wife and I came in 15mins early to the appointment at 4pm on Saturday just to avoid the rush with customers all coming I. At 4. Told us that we are WAY TOO early for the appointment and no one is available to check in my dog. Okay, fine. We walked around and came back at 03:58 pm. 4 customers with dogs waiting to be checked in while my wife, I and one customer are waiting outside of the small reception area for glooming. Re: DOG TRAINING WITH JUAN Our dog just graduated from the Adult 1 class with our instructor Juan. It was so worth the money spent. Juan is a wise, experienced, friendly, helpful, supportive teacher and definitely has a way with the dogs. Our dog fell in love with him because he offered great treats, different ones each week. I'm so happy we invested in our dog's training and that it worked because it will pay off for all of us for the next 15 years. After class, we would all have to take a nap. Husband, dog and I all got a mental workout. Class requires consistent training at home, 5 minutes at a time, 3x a day. Despite fantastic response at home, training was very challenging in the store because of other people, smells and especially other dogs, which made it an excellent training ground. At home, we're thinking our dog is the smartest dog in the world, then you get to class and you're thinking....oh no my dog is a C- student! Our dog has been transformed. One of their female cashiers were extremely rude. She did not care to greet me nor hand over my stuff when I finished paying. Didn't even ask me if I needed a bag for my many items. I had to take the dog treats off of the scale my self. Not to mention she was talking to another staff member about getting her nails and eyebrows done the next day. I tried calling for 2 days & left a message like the recording directed me to, I didn't get a call back. I had to call the store to speak w/someone & he wrote a message down for me & placed it on their register & someone did call me back the next day. My dog came back smelling nice! He only went in for a bath, nothing special. The basic stuff incl ear cleaning, nails trimmed, anal glands expressed. I have no way to check if they did the anal glands, but I feel as if either they missed a couple of nails, or they didn't trim off very much. His ears are generally pretty clean, so I'm not bothered that they didn't wipe it out very much (still a little stuff in there the same evening). All in all, I'd still probably go back because it saves me from having to do it myself! But perhaps I'd ask them to please cut his nails as short as possible without hurting him! read more

Bought a bag of dried dog food at this location and there was a seven dollar coupon on it to redeem, the clerk scanned it and said it expired. I said it was on this bag that I am buying now. So he called the manager. Manager said "we can't get around it we can't scan it so we can't use it." I'm in customer service and I know what we can do and can't do and there's always a way to get a customer discount I think that was very poor management and customer service on his part ! Second thing is I showed the online price to see if they could match it. The cashier would not do it. Give me the online price because he said it's only delivery to your house so when you have a delivered to your house You get it $5 cheaper a case. Giving this Petco 3 stars because not all of the workers provide good service. My boyfriend and I wanted to start an aquarium and we came here a few times to add various different fish and products to make our tank a healthy environment. One of the workers in the aquarium department did not say one word to us and we were standing there for 10 mins when I finally decided to say "HELLO" to him and asked for his help to get some fish. He definitely was bringing my mood down... I went another time to Petco and got our water tested and the store manager Robert helped us. Friendly hard working staff from the retail portion to the grooming salon and dog trainers. They are pretty busy with short staff so calls don't always get through. But when you're actually at the store they try their best to help you with what you need. They also have a walk In clinic on Sundays called Vetco where you can get flea medication and all the vaccinations you need for you pet. read more

Petco has always been my one stop shop because of the convenient location. They offer many good services such as a vet clinic, and grooming, which we have utilized a few times in the past for our dog's nail trims and vaccinations. For the most part, service is wonderful. I get greeted as I walk in, and Greg always goes out of his way to be nice and helpful. However, one time one of their employees (I don't remember her name, but she had a darker complexion and curly hair) was engrossed on her phone near the cat food area and couldn't be bothered to ask if I needed help. read more

I GOT the BEST service I could get. got there 10 minutes before closing and they saw my boy being 13 years old, struggling to be there. They were very gentle with him and took me despite de close time to closing their service for the day. They cut his nails and explained to me that I need to go a little often, like every month to get his nail "nerves" to retrieve and be able to cut a little further in. Very attentive, caring employees. Came by before Christmas contemplating finding a companion for my friend's green cheek conure. Brandon was extremely helpful and got us better acquainted with the birds they had in store. Unfortunately we did not purchase a bird that evening. Came back about 2 weeks later and saw one of the birds with the most personality "Psylocke" was still there! It broke our hearts as we paced between her display and other displays. It seemed like she still remembered us and really came to life as we'd pass by. Moments later we saw Brandon again, it was fate. We had to take her home. "Psylocke" is now "Úrsula Hilaria Celia Rafiki Dao-Jones Cruz" or "Celia Cruz." She has become best friends with the other green cheek conure, Chachi Falcone. We can't thank the staff enough for their help while we were at the store and letting us take this little weirdo home with us. read more

I assumed it was hibernating, because I've always been a freaking genius. But it was dead and when I returned to school in the Fall, everyone knew me as "the guinea pig killer." I got them some chocolate chip cookies, pretzels, sandwich cookies and some other treats. You'd be surprised at how delicious they look! They don't even look like dog treats! My cats are white trash. Well, technically, they are Siamese trash and Tabby trash, but trash nonetheless. I have tried to give them high-end cat food, with less filler, organic meat, low levels of magnesium, whatever. Last week we were at a specialty pet store where they sold cat food with the names "Thanksgiving Dinner" and "Sashimi Delight" for a lot of $$. The labels had appealing graphics and impressive ingredients. It looked pretty damn good, if you ask me, and I can truthfully say I might not say no if it were served with some water crackers at a cocktail party. Did my cats like it? No way. They sniffed it and walked away with their asses high in the air. I think they were one step away from showing me their pimp hands and telling me to get in the kitchen and make them a chicken pot pie. My cats like the junk, like 9 Lives, Friskies and Whiskas. The cheaper, the better. If they were on welfare, these cats would spend their checks buying Wonderbread, catnip, and canned meat. It's what they like. What do you expect from a bastard from North Carolina and a San Francisco street urchin anyway? So it's Petco for my animal supplies. I compromise by giving them Nutro Max dry food, and then all the bad-for-them canned food with names like Mariner's Catch and Seafood Supper. They always gobble it up with delight and then go lay in the sun with their fat bellies exposed for the rest of the day. Freeloaders. This particular Petco is large and is well stocked for fur animals. The staff is very nice, even the young ones, which is more and more a rarity these days. They offer grooming every day, and vaccinations on certain days, and the customers often bring their dogs, which is fun to see. I like to take the dog to Stern Grove park or Fort Funston and hit Petco on the way back which is very convenient. If you park on Sloat you don't have to deal with the shopping center parking lot, but if you park in the parking lot then it's just a few doors down to Arby's for a quick bite. So you can get your fix of fillers and nitrates, too! Gourmet cat food? If you ask my cats, that stuff is for pussies. read more

For those furry kids, this place pretty much has everything you'll need. They carry most name brand products, but, if you seek those certain specialized products, you may not necessarily find them here. They offer grooming services in a corner of the store that is fully visible to waiting parents and walk-by customers. The store is not very large compared to other stores (16th St. is about 1.5 times larger or so it seems), but the parking here is very convenient. This location is apt for multi-stops since it shares the parking with a Lucky's, King of Thai, Ono's Hawaiian Food, Noah's Bagel, Nubi Yogurt, and Peet's Coffee (for SF old-timers, former GET location... as in Get Smart!). On a recent visit, we were disappointed with the quality of a food bowl and returned it. Unfortunately, my receipt was not available, but the sales person told me that she could refund me the cost in the form of a gift card. No problem for me especially since I know that I'll be shopping here again. Love the unstressed shopping experience. read more

Until I heard this middle age asian could ask a white employee if anyone there spoke Cantonese.. As I was about to take my pedestal and throw on my SuperChinese cape and come to the rescue.. One of the employee says "I speak a little bit" (in Cantonese).. I look over and see Brandon. Plain looking white boy, doesn't seem to have an chinese gene in his body, bushy beard, skater looking guy.. BRANDON SPOKE HELLA GOOD CANTONESE!!! I was so shocked! And he even held a conversation with the couple who wanted help on how to get their little Pom to eat dog food! I was blown away.. Good job Brandon, (insert F word here)ing amazing. Forget your local fish store and throw out all those preconceived notions about big box stores. I was like you before. Rooting for the little guy, going to that fish shop up in the Richmond. It's probably just an anomaly, and something special and unique to this Petco alone, but their advice and knowledge of fish is highly superior here. Talk to BRANDON, JUAN or CHRIS. BRANDON & JUAN love and have a passion for fish like no other, and CHRIS is a manager who has lots of experience with African Cichlids. We come here practically every week for advice, supplies, or just to chat about how our tanks are doing! I will admit, they have a bigger problem than they should with fish casualties from their supplier in SoCal, and that's something that should be seriously looked at. But they do their very best to care for any fish who are sick, and will even sometimes take in unwanteds. (It's against their official policy but if BRANDON or one of the other guys has room for a fish, they have very caring hearts for these creatures and will try to help.) We recently had an issue with two mislabeled "upside down catfish", who, within the span of 4-6 months grew from 1 inch to about 5-6 inches! They were becoming piggy little monsters in our Cichlids' tank, stealing food even during the day. Well, CHRIS gave us a full refund and took the guys back to find them a home where they would actually fit in better. (And not outgrow!) Right now they're in the process of renovating their fish section, so I'm excited to see what will happen next. I think thus Petco has a larger than normal fish area and now it's going to be even larger! As for their cat and dog sections, I'm always catching a live dog-training going on and the trainers seem great. I like to browse the cat section for any goodies my furkids might like and they have some great deals on cat trees made of sturdy particle board. Their bird, reptile, and small animal section is actually well stocked too. They have some very exotic and beautiful birds along with their rabbits, gerbils, snakes, turtles, lizards... I'm a bad pet parent and forgot to get my cat food when she ran out. And of course I only figure this out after I get home from my night class. I rolled (alright, screeched) into the parking lot at 8:59 and probably 59 seconds. They not only didn't close the door in my face, they also didn't rush me out the door. I was able to pick up the food AND some new litter. They were getting ready to lock up by the time I left, but if not for their kindness, I'd probably still be searching through Lucky for their cat food aisle now and she would still be hungry. When I got home, she was still waiting for me in the exact same spot I left her when I ran out in a panic to get the food. I'm such a bad dad. read more

My dainty little fancy mouse fell ill with pneumonia and was dying on my birthday. She died a day later in my hands. I was so sad. When I purchased her, the petco person on the floor mentioned a guarantee on their health and that they could offer veterinary services if my pet became sick early on in my care/ after recent adoption. Needless to say, I called petco to bring up the issue of my mouses death. I spoke with Quinn, the manager there. He was kind, sympathetic, and when I went there in person, noticed he was a good leader or team player with the other staff. This place is dog friendly! Sorry, I thought that would be funny. This review is for their grooming department. I have never been a fan of Petco because my previous experience has been that it's very corporate and there is definitely a disconnect when it comes to customer service. I was willing to give them a try because I was babysitting a friend's dog and she always takes Pepper to Petco. Pepper was a stinky mess and I needed something quick and fast. They really met my expectations in that sense and everyone was really nice but I felt it was completely overpriced. $37 for a wash and brush and because I was getting "special shampoo," they charged an extra $6. The reason I took Pepper to get a wash was because the poor thing has a case of bad dandruff. I had been very specific about them getting rid of the dandruff, which is why they charged extra for this "special shampoo." There was nothing special about this shampoo by the way. Just a ploy to get more money out of you. Do you want to know how I know this? Because when I walked, the moment I said he had dandruff they instantly wanted to upsell me to their luxury package which was upwards of $58! Spritz this, premium that. If anything, I guarantee you that they use regular shampoo either way, Now, I love Pepper but $58 for a bunch of chemicals was pretty outrageous. An extra $6 was also ridiculous because they didn't get rid of the dandruff at all. Not only that but they charge you after the bath because they add on a bunch of shit that your dog really doesn't need. They say, "Oh he had to have this done so it's an extra $10." Again, everyone was very nice to Pepper and they did handle them with care but watch out for the price switching. Anything basic will have about another $20 tacked on. Be sure to let them know that you will pay upfront. Do not pay when you pick up your dog because they are more likely to tack on a bunch of fees and you really have no way to know if they actually used the products they say they will, unless you spend the whole time watching them. Hence why the front desk is small and has no seats, because they don't want you to stay and watch them. Pretty smart actually but I am on to you Petco. read more

This is mainly for the grooming salon, as I don't usually shop in the store: OK, I'll admit my dog's haircut was pretty good and I like how you can choose the length of the cut. BUT (and this is a big "but") the staff needs some etiquette lessons. They were very rude when they called us to pick up our dog ("Are you going to pick up your dog now?"). And they felt the need to mention that my dog was "being a bad boy", but when I peeked through the window, he was just standing there on the table while he was getting shaved. (I also took him to two other groomers, who both said he was a good dog--not to mention that I also cut his fur when I can't make it to the groomer. Makes you wonder...) If they're that rude to people, I don't want to think how they are to the dogs. When my dog came back home from the groomers, he isolated himself from us for literally days. read more
