The website for grooming does not show the additional prices Petco charges for its grooming services. There is a $5.99 materials fee per dog it doesn't disclose. I felt the questions asked on the website to describe your dog were not clear enough to avoid getting upcharged when you check out. I ended up spending almost $30 more than I expected for grooming my two small dogs. There was only 1 person grooming when I arrived and 1 person when I left. The store seems to be understaffed. The groomer(s) did a nice job and was pleasant. read more

Bettas were in AWFUL condition. No offense to any employees, this is probably a store issue, but it was abysmal. The water was yellow in the cups, most of them had fin issues, and there was one poor little dead fish rotting away in its cup, for a while. There is white fuzz growing on it. (3rd review of 2022) We went here to find the Acana Freshwater dry dog food & we found it. There wasn't any employee that we saw other than the 1 cashier & the 2 in the grooming areas. We eventually found the dry dog food & it's about $2-3 cheaper than Amazon... including tax. Wifey went to use the bathroom & was disgusted by it. She said all the toilet paper & paper towels were jus laying on top the dispensers. The toilet seat cover dispensers were all empty. I wish that I could give Petco in Overland Park, KS and employee, Angel a million stars on this Google Review. Angel did something for me that was so above and beyond what would be required of her as an employee. I will remember her for as long as I live. We are moving out of State and will be in limbo prior to getting our house. I have 5 of the most amazing glow fish. I love and adore them. I have cared for them for 2 years and baby them like my children. They are spoiled rotten. So I knew the day was coming that I would have to find a home for them. I literally asked everyone I knew. Then I decided to put them on market place but I felt as though I was getting people that only wanted the tank and supplies. So someone said that Petco (where I love shopping) would happily take the fish. I thought OmGOSH this is perfect bc then they will go to someone who will love them.'I was sad in my heart bc they had been together for 2 years but at least they were going to be well cared for (I hoped). So when I spoke to Angel I joked and said I would like them to stay together as a family and she chuckled with me. Several hours later I brought my fish kids to Petco. As I walked in a girl said you must be the lady who called. I said are you Angel. It was her! She said awe they are so cute! I said hey would you take them? And she said sure..I would love to!' I about fell over in happiness and grabbed her to hug her! My babies were going to an employee of a pet store who clearly loved pets! AND...her name is ANGEL! Was she even real or was she my guardian Angel? Either way...she is precious and I know she has a heart of gold. She felt that I was so sad and she took my fish so they could stay together! Bless her heart. Who does that? Angel does! She should get employee of the decade. When I walked in she was helping someone and they really seemed to be enjoying their conversation with her. She obviously has an amazing personality and excellent customer service. I will NEVER FORGET what she did for me. For this I will always rest easy bc of her kind heart. I will also always exclusively shop at Petco bc of ANGEL! I also called back bc I wanted to bring her some fish supplies and she had left work. I spoke to her Mgr Leo! She was AMAZING, as well. It must be a prerequisite to work there. Someone is doing something right. Maybe Leo trained her..maybe someone trained Leo. Regardless..they are both awesome. Recently, I went to this store for the first time. It will be my last too. I needed Kaytee Midwest blend outdoor bird seed in a 7lb. bag and, while they did have it, was WAY overpriced as I later found out the hard way. There was no shelf tag, and I assumed they would be selling it for a reasonable price. Was I ever wrong. Got home and filled the feeders and looked at my sales receipt, only to find they had charged me a whopping $29.45 for that small bag. That is triple of what they should be charging. It's also ten dollars higher than my local Hyvee for the same item. Can you say price gouging? I can. That is simply ripping off your customers. I'll never go back to this store. If I could give negative stars I would. as soon as I left, my dog peed on the floor. She clearly hadn't been taken out in 5 hours!!! They not only cut my 13 year old dog in two places (shoulder blade and foot) but cut all her hair off without my consent. Groomer (Cassie) told me they updated the notes in the system to let the next groomer know she had moles on her body in two specific places and to not cut them off (like she did) but when I asked to see the notes all of a sudden she remembered she hadn't put them in the system yet. I brought my daughter here to pick up a new pet fish. I'd never been to this location before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. We were greeted warmly by the staff when we came in and went straight back to the aquariums. About the time that we decided what we wanted, a friendly gentleman came along to take care of us. He let us know about their replacement fish policy, which I found to be very reassuring. The check out process was fairly painless. If I had to suggest improvements: 1. If I don't have one of those pals cards, maybe I'd like one if you'd take the time to explain its advantages to me. 2. It's not cool to pick up the phone and make those who are in front of you wait. I took my dog to the Petco at 11620 W 95th St, Overland Park, KS 66214 on 5/15 for a nail trim and bath (I usually go to the location at 135th and Stateline and have always had an excellent experience, but this location had openings sooner so I decided to try this place I out). The nail trim & bath usually go for ~$37 and I'm always able to do just that at the 135th location. When I arrived, they told me they would have to do the full shed treatment for $60 on my dog due to her fur coat and compacted fur (note: she is an akita/terrier mix with short hair that's about 1 inch long). That was instantly a red flag to me but I agreed to it as I had already drove 20 minutes to get to the grooming appointment. Not even 20 minutes after I had dropped off my dog they call to tell me they will not be doing the full treatment due to 'behavioral issues' while they were trying to trim her nails. I drove straight there and they only charged me $10 for the nail trim. I was confused as my dog has never shown aggression towards anyone before and I've never had any issues with her being handled at previous grooming appointments or vet appointments other than some light mouthing when her paws are touched. I was concerned and asked if I could know how bad it was for future reference. Their explanation was "if she had gotten ahold of us she could have seriously messed us up". There was no effort to muzzle her or even calm her down. My dog was visibly shaken and upset so at the moment I decided to just pay the $10 and get her out of there ASAP. I got back home and decided to look at my dog's nails and they were MUTILATED! On her front paws alone there were four nails with visible dried blood and bruising and almost every nail was visibly cut past the quick (pictures attached). I can only imagine the pain they inflicted on her and that is what caused her behavior. This is 100% animal abuse and I am filing a report with the ASPCA to report this. The groomer's name was Cory FYI. I would recommend an investigation into this location and its groomers. If there is video surveillance available the incidence took place around 1:30 PM, Saturday, May 15th. read more

My aquarium tank sprung a leak after hours on a Saturday. I picked out a stylish new tank online and paid. Next day first thing I go to get my tank and it has been canceled. I was overwhelmed and frantic for my fish. The manager Kristy help me. She called around and figured out something perfect. I have brought our adopted senior dog in for grooming four times since we got her in January 2021. Each time I've picked up her up from grooming, she has looked soo beautiful from the nice job they have done -- she gets a bath and cut, nails done, smells wonderful, and is pretty proud of herself when I pick her up; high maintenance, but we love our little gal. The groomers here seem very careful and conscientious, and have been nice and professional in answering my questions about grooming since it was new territory for me. We've had many dogs before, but none required grooming as this dog requires (her fur grows, hardly sheds). I just ask the groomers to give her a summer-type cut since it's gotten warmer, and leave it to them. Our dog always looks great -- and we haven't experienced any problems with this grooming service; so far our dog has been groomed by Sandy and Cassy. This is a busy grooming practice, so it's been helpful to us to have a standing appointment. read more

UPDATE: I reached out to them with my concern as they suggested and that was an even worse idea! We are now pretty much blacklisted from all Petcos now because we calmly voiced our concern. On the phone they were very defensive and I let them know I (used to) love Petco and would be back (now I defiantly will not and wouldn't recommend it to anyone). I went in to buy some puppy shampoo. The total was around $12 I have 7.90 on my card thinking it would go negative. Instead it charged me for the 7.90 and they asked my for the remaining $$$ which I didn't have at the time. Instead of voiding the transaction they told me there was nothing they could do for me and that they would call corporate and get my my 7.90 back. Few days later... nothing. So I called and they said they would talk to the employee that was working that morning and they asked for my name and phone # and assured me I would get my money. Still haven't gotten it. Called again today and the rude employee just gave me a phone number and hung up in the middle of me saying thank you so much. Do not go to this petco they are rude. read more

This Oak Park area Petco is not unlike any other pet store in the area. Dog food, cat food, fish, random lizards, and grooming services. What sets this store apart, however, is its drab and dark interiors. Don't get me wrong, you can get everything you need here for your pet's needs including pricier foods, treats, and toys. Heck, they even have a dog treat bar and "serve yourself" kitty litter station. It's the ambiance that suffers here. The store is often very poorly staffed and I've had to wait at the counter for a few minutes several times waiting for a cashier. Staff are friendly and ALWAYS pet advocates - their personalities make up for the short-staffedness. As long as Petco keeps sending me 10% off coupons, I'll keep shopping here to save five bucks on my dog's food of choice vs. Petsmart up the road. Despite the discount, I continually think "what's this visit going to be like" when I pull into the parking lot. read more

My poor puppy hid underneath my bed shaking for a week after picking him up from this groomer. There is obviously some gross malpractice going on in this establishment. I wondered if it was just him being scared of the groomers/other dogs. I just picked him up from Divine K-Nine in Olathe and he's as happy as when he went in (if not more). That's why I waited until now to post this review. I would highly recommend an investigation into the treatment of animals at this facility. The staff here is out of this world. Every time I've been there someone goes out of there way to help. My favorite employee there is one of the managers, I think her name is spelled Derraine (if you are her and read this sorry about the spelling). She has got down on the ground every time I've ended help with a harness. They all are friendly and very helpful. Their return policy is pretty good as well. Pretty much you have 60 (with receipt) to bring an item back. I even brought back a toy I took out of package with no questions asked. Did i mention they have a treat bar. You can get your fur friend a mixture of different treats and they charge by the pound! Great way to get a variety. This is for sure my go to place for all if Alley's (my dog) needs. read more

Normally, I hate pet stores. They're full of crazy animal people, indifferent staff, and adoption centers that make the animals look like they're in prison. That being said, my dog needed food and I was in the area, so this Petco was the best choice. Well, let me start off by saying it was dead on this Wednesday early evening. Deaddddd. My fiancé and I were the only two in the store without name tags, which was nice and made it a good experience off the bat. The whole place is very clean and nicely laid out - plenty of stuff, but not at all cluttered. Tons of treats, snacks, toys, foods, leashes/collars. They even have a "rawhide bar" and "treat bar" with various options at fair prices. Staff seemed very friendly on my experience, both the cashier and the gentleman bringing carts in from outside who asked if he could help us find something. They have some cats for adoption that do appear to be taken care of properly with plenty of room to move around. Humane treatment at a pet store isn't always the case, but this Petco appears to know what they're doing. I respect them greatly for that. I like this Petco. A lot. read more

Although I prefer my nearby PetSmart, I was in the area, and decided to check this out. Eh. All the cat stuff is on the left, and the dog stuff on the right. That should save you some time from wandering around the store like I did.....which was necessary since there were no employees around. I finally did encounter one person who was very helpful, but when it came time to check out, not one employee was around. The line of customers continued to grow. Finally, I hollered across the store to a woman in the back to ask for help. She finally came up and called another woman to come up. I was in the area and could not resist a visit to a pet store, especially one that has kibble, both for my dog and cats, in stock and has kittens for adoption. The kittens are adoptable through Petco from T.A.R.A., an organization that finds homes for orphaned and stray animals. The kittens in stock at the moment are heartrendingly cute, orphans found on the side of the road where their mother had been killed by a car. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they have a good variety of supplies. Plus, the store is right next to a Best Buy, so chances are you'll be in the area soon anyway. So, come in and think about adopting a kitten. They have everything you need. read more

Paid over $50 for a groom and flea treatment. They did not put the flea treatment on. Called me to notify me but I have not been able to go back and get it. You guys are pretty expensive so I decided to take my pup somewhere else but you won't give my money back for the flea treatment I did not receive because it was back in May? Management of this store needs to be aware....and I am sure they are, that forcing their employees and animals to such harsh conditions l, is inhuman and irresponsible. Plus, subjecting customers to such conditions will force people to shop elsewhere. Conditions you say....yes the store felt like is was 40 degrees. Per the gentleman checking us out the heating and cooling has been out in the front of the store for 8 months. All the animals were moved to the back of the store. I really hate to give a bad review on my latest experience, but I don't want anyone to make the same mistake I did. I have gone to petco for a year now to use their self groom, it's an awesome price for everything I need to bathe my malamute (way too big to bathe at home) so that's definitely a plus. However, I decided that it was time for him to get a haircut. For those of you who are familiar with the breed, they should never ever be shaved. I was super clear with that when I dropped him off. I just needed his butt fluff trimmed up a little bit because it was so fluffy. I got him back and his rear end is completely shaved, and it honestly looks like a five year old did it. It's extremely choppy and uneven, and he was still wet when I picked him up. Extremely disappointed, and now I have to pay someone else to fix it. :/ read more

I came in with my kids to get some aquarium supplies and pick out a couple new fish, and I was shocked at what I saw in the fish tanks. Almost every single tank of the dozens of different tanks had many dead and sick fish in them. Some of the fish had clearly been dead for quite some time and left in the tank for many days, partially decomposing and being eaten by other fish. The employees must really not care when these fish die, since they just leave the carcasses to decompose in the fish tanks. I bought a couple aquarium supply items, and then left quickly before my kids noticed all the dead fish. I won't be back to support this store in this condition. read more

I took my cat in for grooming, and not only did she still smell bad after grooming, she wasn't completely groomed--the woman with the flaming red hair completely missed areas on her body, and when I took her back in, the groomer was so rude to me. Maybe one of the most poorly run businesses in the world. There are three, yes three employees that are supposed to cover roughly 10,000 square foot of retail space. If you go when the "younger" employees are there, at least your request for help will be met with some level of enthusiasm, if you go when the "older" white haired crew is there, they will do their best to duck, dodge and hide at every opportunity to avoid making eye contact with you. Yesterday I visited this store 2 times. The first time I was in for about 20 minutes and watched two older lady employees chat about their holiday plans in an office while one old grumpy guy managed the the only open register. Clearly seeing the aggravated customers outside, the ladies in the office; instead of helping, decided it best to close the door. UNBELIEVABLE !! I decided to leave and return in a bit after I was done running more errands in the area hoping for less foot traffic. The second visit was around 4pm and again, upon walking in, no visible employees to be seen. I finally found all three of them in the back chatting around a pallet of dog food, when I asked if I could have some crickets, they all simultaneously looked at each other like "do you want to get it?", when the old guy quickly responds "you have to request those at the front", when I pointed to the front and showing him that there is NO ONE up front to help me, he looks at his two old lady colleagues and let's out a "UGHHHHH". Is this guy for real? This attitude permeates through out the store, just go look at their aquariums. Dead fish in every other tank. This place needs to shut down. read more
