This review is for dog training, specifically with Jeremy. Although Petco is a chain, the trainer is local. We have had great success with Jeremy at the Petco by Capitol Mall. We did group lessons three times and have now moved to private lessons. The price for one-on-one lessons is so reasonable - $329 for 6 sessions! Jeremy has brought Chico (and us) along so much better than the $200/hr trainer we were using. Jeremy "gets" dogs and he's gentle, patient & persistent. He demonstrates the skill and then has us work with the dog as he gives helpful feedback. read more

Very nice and efficient staff at the veterinary clinic for vaccines. That being said, through no fault of their own, there is dog shit all over the three aisles leading to the vet clinic, and even on the scale. Customers in line just look the other way when their dog poops. I was hard put to stand anywhere that my dog and I weren't standing in feces. Here we're trying to prevent disease at a vaccine clinic and confronted with a public health issue. If you have little hand carried dogs, you might get out of there cleanly, except for your shoes. I blame management and corporate for assuming that customers or veterinarians are gonna mop up the floors. Next time I'd get vaccines on line and give them myself. Waiting to get into a real vet hospital in a few months, for rabies shot. I will never go back to this filthy store. read more

Went to the store yesterday for the vaccine clinic. We just adopted a pup and were unable to get into a vet clinic without having to wait over a month. I was happy with how very nice the person on the phone was when I hooked the appointment. I really like that they sent me several reminders for the visit it was nice because I get busy and forget things, When we got there , everyone was SO nice and even though it was just a vax clinic they really did take their time with him and handled him the way I liked . It was also very clean in there. I highly recommend using this clinic for simple vaccinations for your fur babies. The prices were on par with today's expensive pet care so I'm aware would have paid that much at a vet office too, but at least the pup got his shots without having to wait over a month. My only complaint is they did not allow me to take photos of him getting weighed, and him licking the peanut butter or whatever it was they gave him to keep him occupied. As we approached the register, we were met with an icy indifference that made us feel as if we were invisible. Our polite attempt to engage, by wishing her a good day and expressing our thanks, was met with a cold, disapproving stare. I rarely shop here, but do use the grooming. When first getting my Rottweiler I wanted to find someone to work on getting her nails back in good shape because the previous owner never clipped them for two years. I happened to talk to Leanne and it turned out she loved working with rotties. An appointment was made and Jewel immediately took to Leanne. Leanne was able to get her nails under control, clean her ears and even recognize she needed a little treatment in them. Jewel is always excited to see her, and I've even seen her and Leanne sitting on the table and Jewel getting some special attention. I just wanted to send out special kudos to Leanne for the passion she has for her job and the love she has for her clients. The staff seems to consist of very young immature people that haven't been trained. Every experience I had today I should have just walked out. I encountered 3 different female staff members that were rude and acted as if they hate their lives, couldn't tell me where anything was. The cashier didn't have a clue- couldn't find the barcode on the bag of dog food, asked me to find it- and was complaining the whole time. I won't be returning. Their prices are also insane. High end dog food was 40$ more than the local feed store. Training treats were 14$ more. And 75$ clearance items in the bin aren't really on clearance. This store never has our dog's wet or dry dog food in stock. Often the shelves are sparse and empty. Also, I am not sure why this particular pet store smells so bad, but it does. The overwhelming smell hits you right in the face when you walk in. I have switched to exclusively shopping Petsmart even though it is out of the way. read more

The nice gentleman name Sa at fishing department he helped me not giving up on my fishing tank (40 gallons) very good advices over two years since I started with fishing tank. Petco Grooming discriminates against customers and pets. They have banned our dogs from grooming because they take medication. Our three year old labradoodle started at Petco's puppy training and we've been loyal customers since then. Once he began his medication, they refused service to him and our other dog. We're done with Petco. Mudbay has been great and Chewy seems to cover the rest of our needs. Our recommendation: forget Petco. read more

I will never shop here again. I brought my dog in for a quick nail trim and waIted at the counter for a while as a grooming employee watched seemingly hoping I would walk away. Her attitude was similar when she finally approached and only improved after she asked if my dog was on any medications. Evidently, they won't provide services to dogs on arthritis medication. It s a simple shot once per month and doesn't have any noticeable side effects. New rule put in place recently.. Per other reviews it sounds like they have seriously limited who they will serve. I have plenty of choices in the area and won't be spending another dime at this store. I would suggest Petco provide some customer service training to the grooming staff. Maybe post a sign so people don't wait for your slow, rude staff to tell them about your new policies... I would have been less frustrated if I hadn't felt like I was an inconvenience that was able to be side stepped thanks to that new policy. read more

So sad...I have been told by many NOT to purchase feeder bugs at Petco. I thought, why? They are bugs, I am not buying a pet. Well today I found out why. We have a beautiful beardie-Het for Zero, got him from a breeder who takes AMAZING care of their Beardies (and snakes) btw. Usually we get our bi-weekly order of large, and I mean large Dubia roaches from him, well he is out of town and the Dragon is refusing the Crickets we bought to hold him over until we could re-up. I thought, how bad could it be to get them from Petco...well bad! They were stacked in small cups on the shelf, and were all dead! Every container I picked up had MAYBE 1, just 1 that was alive out of the 10(ish) in the container. How do they not know that their stock is dead? I notified the cashier who did barely more than brush me off when I told her about the dead roaches. So, now I guess I understand why I was told to never buy feeders from the "big-box-stores..." and hopefully this will help someone else understand that as well. read more

Horrible experience. 0/5 I was observing a betta fish and noticed a deceased one, not newly dead but it looked like it had been sitting like that for awhile. I picked up the cup and gave it to a employee he thanked me and we moved on. We continued looking at the other aquariums and noticed yet another dead fish. I told the same employee so because he had been tending to the fish. He proceeded to ask me if all I was going to do was point out the bad. Do NOT use Petco for grooming. After having no previous issues with getting my elderly dog groomed, I was suddenly informed that she was "too old" without any further explanation. When I called back to ask for more clarification, I was hung up on twice by the super unprofessional grooming manager. I called the store to speak with a general manager to address the issue. She said they don't have "specific equipment" to handle older dogs. They literally turned down a paying customer and a dog who would have done fine just because they don't care enough to be willing to facilitate individual needs with some support. Calling a client a few hours before an appointment to tell them that you don't care enough about older dogs to have equipment to help them stay upright and comfortable is literally the most unprofessional and inconsiderate thing a company could subject a customer to. Any decent groomer would be happy to work with a pre-existing customer to help their dog be comfortable for grooming. The fact that Petco doesn't even care enough to try to make things right should be a good reason for anyone to seek out a friendlier and more accommodating groomer with more professional and considerate business practices. I started going to Petco's Vetco for the convenience of walk-in hours -- no appointment necessary. I return because it's a lot less expensive for basic care like annual shots & prescription flea medicine. Vetco At this location has 2 days of limited 2 hour windows: Sat morning and I think Tuesday evening. Wow, a doctor available when you aren't working; let's try this with humans please! Now we love our Vet who has serviced our pets for years and years but we are just to busy to work around their schedule other than an emergency. The vet and assistants are well trained and very nice. I take my XL Chocolate Lab here for regular grooming. We previously went to Petsmart and had a pretty terrible experience with the grooming at the Lacey location. Ollie would be afraid to go, timid when I touched his paws and he normally is a super happy dog. I started taking him here and talked to the groomer about his issues with his paws. We both worked with Ollie to help encourage him to feel comfortable with his paws being touched and held. He LOVES to come here, every time we pull into the parking lot he pants excitedly and wags his tail so fast! They completely trimmed her and I'm beyond mad. The girl who took our instructions and indicated she was the groomer actually handed her off to a guy that looked like he needed a shower and a good night sleep. When we picked her he said she did ok but was very vocal. That's not like her at all, leading us to believe she did not like him at all. UPDATE: Now I have a review of the grooming department. It used to be absolutely fantastic when Leanne was there (manager) but she moved. Things weren't as good when she left, but ok. Today my husband called the grooming department: Husband: Hi, my name is ........ and I would like to set an appointment to have my dog groomed. Groomer: Ok. ( Then complete silence) Husband: What days are available? Groomer: Nothing until July 30th. (It's June 25) Husband: You don't have anything earlier than that? Groomer: (very aggressively) Did I say we have anything earlier?! Husband: I was just asking because usually we get in in just a few days. Groomer: Which dog of yours? Husband: Winston Groomer: Annoyed sigh Husband: Is that a problem? Groomer: You want a specific groomer? Husband; No. Anyone is fine. Groomer: (rudely) Well, your still not going to get him groomed until after July 30th! Husband: Ok, let's set up the appointment for after the 30th Groomer: We're not making appointments. We are just taking numbers and then call you later. If you don't hear from us tomorrow, call back on Monday. Husband: Can I talk to your manager? Groomer: The manager isn't here. (Hangs up on my husband) My husband then calls the store to talk to the store manager who isn't in, so he gets the assistant manager, who didn't really seem to care, but said the manager will call tomorrow. We have been taking our dogs to Petco exclusively since they were puppies. (7 years!) No more! We found a wonderful groomer on Harrison. We are telling all our friends who use Petco grooming not to go there, as well as anyone we know. If that's how the groomer treats people, I would hate to see how she treats animals. I don't feel comfortable leaving my pets there! I went in to purchase 2 guinea pigs because I was told two are needed because they are social creatures and you shouldn't get just one to start. The staff contradicted each other about the size of cage I need and the number of guinea pigs needed. One employee told me getting two I would risk them fighting and needing to be separated when they mature. That scared me so I got one female. They showed me the cage I needed. When I asked if was big enough for an adult pig they said no, it's ok for a baby though. Why would I get a small cage knowing that the pig will grow. So they sold me a bigger cage. I brought the guinea pig and cage home and started to assemble the cage and it was broken! I took the cage back to the store and they tried to exchange it for a smaller cage as an even exchange. Oh hell no! So they found another larger cage of a different brand. So says after I purchased the said cage I find out it's 5sq ft. One guinea pig needs 7.5 sq feet!!! And you really do need two. They should not be selling animals they know nothing about. read more

The easy return policy is a joke at this location. Came in to return an aquarium lid that had been purchased online so we I could get the item refunded (arrived shattered). There was a miscommunication and rather than refunding the item on to a gift card like many locations do or to the original method of purchase, it was refunded in the form of a "merch card" which can only be used in store. Which is utterly useless for an item I need to purchase online. Discussed this on the phone with a manager Carol the same day (at this point they've already taken my item back in store so I do not have the option to go elsewhere to return or ship back to Petco) and was told I could come back to the store and get the merch card voided and get a proper refund. Came in the next day just to have an employee by the name of Dwayne immediately giving me a nasty attitude and claiming they have absolutely no way to give a refund. Which at this point is pretty distressing because they have already taken my return item, so I can't just opt to not deal with this location and go elsewhere. After a lengthy amount of time with Dwayne shouting and acting irate, he finally decides to actually do his job and contact the manager who informed me I could come in for a refund, confirms I was right and gives me the refund. In short, would definitely not return to a location that feels the need to not only act in a verbally abusive manner toward customers, but also outright lie claiming they have no way of giving a refund when they absolutely did. Pick a different location that doesn't make it a point to hire emotionally unhinged individuals. read more

Over three years the prices have been raising. From $36.00 to now $57. But this takes the cake a charge for using scissors? The two dogs total was a $160.00. Hell no was my response. On a whim, we went here a week ago for the first time to get my daughter some tropical fish. It took us about 30 minutes from the time we picked out the fish to the time we left the store. The first 15 minutes was for us to get someone to help us. The next 15 minutes was due to the very long wait to check out. Our aquarium is stable and has not had any new fish in it in about a year and a half, other than babies that were born in it. Well, we added the three new fish from Petco and all three died within a week. Two of them didn't show any obvious symptoms beyond just suddenly dying after a few days. The third got cottonmouth fungus, pretty bad, and I had to remove it from the tank and euthanize it just so the fungus would not spread to the other fish. There is no real treatment for a bad case of that disease. Ugh. I am going to be mad if does spread! They have a 3-day fish warranty, but what good is that when they die after four or five days? Today was my second visit to Petco to have Daniela cut my large dog's nails. Having the nails cut have been a major stress for me and my dog for six years. We have been told that nail trims could not be completed due to my pet's behavior. I have tried holding him down, using a muzzle, dosing with CBD but nothing seems to work.
