In the span of a year, this Petco has undergone a renovation to add a low cost clinic, reduce their stock for small animals to pretty much nothing, and declined significantly in the quality of customer service. I think today's experience has really been the tipping point for me to never return. I found two associates and went to them to ask for help today. Before I could get a sentence in, one of the associates cut me off to tell me "no m'am that is the VERY LAST bag and we don't have anymore in the back." If she had waited for me to finish, she would learn that 1)this was NOT the last bag, in fact there were at least 2 bags total - one in my cart and on left on the shelf and 2)the reason I approached her in the first place was that both bags had holes cut into them and were leaking product! They acted like I was a bother for coming up and telling them that there was now a trail of cat litter in the store and they had defective merchandise on their shelves! To top off the sundae, after I re-explained the situation to her, she looked from me to my cart and to my now no-longer-full-bag of cat litter and finally responded with an offer to get me some tape. No. thanks. I'm giving this spot 2 stars for at least working with local animal rescues but from now on, it's straight to the Westlayan location for me. read more

Every time I visit this place, it's difficult to find an employee to help you or answer your questions, the groomers are often overbooked and rush you through the service. I used to get my dog groomed here with no problems whatsoever since he was a puppy, however, the last time I went, the groomer that saw him stated that he tried to bite her Although that's never happened before from anyone ever, then the most recent time I tried to take him back, I took him to the vet to get his rabies vaccination only to arrive at my appointment on time, for the groomer to let me know that I have to wait 24 hours after vaccination is given. Where that information is written so that I could find that out before the appointment, I have no clue. I will never be back again as they are a waste of time and there staff can barely keep it together. read more

DOG TRAINER IS AWESOME We looked for doggie training places for a long time. Everywhere was either far or simply too expensive. We never even thought of Petco! When we first met the head trainer there he seemed very much in tuned with dogs. His ability to get my dog's attention and under control made me feel great. After signing in both my dogs for adult dog training 1 and officially graduating after 6 weeks... it's 100% worth it. I can tell you this guy knows what's up, he can train your dogs. We signed up for the second dog training class which is another 6 weeks and afterwards will feel confident we can complete the AKC certification. The trainers name is Derek. Also to note the store is great. The prices are quite competitive to other large name pet stores around the area. The employees all are very nice and one even has pet birds on him almost all the time. It's awesome. read more

I originally went into Petco to check out the affordable animal hospital. I brought both my puppers in to get their anal glands expressed and other reasons. Their customer service was amazing! The technicians were able to answer all of my questions and put my mind at ease. My puppers left happily and healthier than ever. As for the store part, I had an amazing experience! There is a self-service bath station in the back. Everything is so clean and organized! The staff is very nice and helpful. I ended up leaving two additional family members (see photo attached) and saved quite a bit of money. I will most definitely be shopping here again. read more

Terrible terrible terrible grooming service. Do not go here. I've waited a month to write this review to ensure it wasn't written out of initial rage. I took my maltipoo for grooming and she has been visiting a vet constantly since then. She either has a chemical burn or laceration on her ears. She has been in so much pain for the past month and still won't get out of bed even with all the medication she has been taking. Her ears are still bleeding and I just can't believe how awful of a grooming service Petco delivered. Do yourself and your pet a favor and go anywhere else but here. read more

Called on Saturday to try and make an appointment to get by dog bathed in Sunday. Got the message machine, no problem but also no call back. Called again twice on sunday about four hours apart and left messages. Today's Monday and still no call back I can happily take my dog and my money to busineses that want it. For the price and convenience of this store and the great job they do I give them 5 stars. Many grooming places nearby don't accommodate large dogs and I never have a problem getting mine in. Once they are home, they smell great and are happy. Glad to see all the positive changes they are making to the store, it was a little rundown. I wish I would have read these reviews before i brought my dog in. 4 year old schnauzer that has never had any health issues just suddenly stopped eating and started to throw up so we brought her in since we have been here before for vaccinations and heart-worm tests to get heart worm meds. Gf dropped off our dog in the morning since they said they needed to run tests. I picked our dog up after work and paid the bill which was around 730 dollars. The vet did not come out to talk to me about our sick dog, did not get any answers from the vet tech about our dog. Worse thing is that our dog was no better off after visiting and no questions about our dogs health was answered. I called back a few hours later and they told me to take the dog to an animal ER. I went to a different vet and the experience was so much better and made so much more sense. No un-needed testing and misc fees that are nonsense. I am just so relieved that my dog is finally eating again. I am so disappointed in bringing my dog to Vetco, and will avoid this whole Petco at all costs. read more

Visited the store today for the first time to buy gerbil food. Returned home, opened the bag, and to my surprise, it was full of spider webs and worms. LIVE WORMS!! (the very thought still gets my stomach upset). Returned the bag to the store w/ the receipt, and they agreed to refund me. Alright, so I do like this place but am only giving 3 stars due to a poor grooming experience. I took my Cocker Spaniel here to be groomed as I had previously done a few times but this last time they completely disregarded the instructions I had given and went their own way. I had used the grooming services for several years. Never, ever, will I use this business again. First, they have implemented a phone system that means the grooming employees no longer care to answer the phone. So, don't bother to leave a message -- they will never respond. Second, I did finally reach a person who set down my receiver for about 10 mins. while I waited for a response. During that time, I had the joy of hearing about all of the staff's personal stories -- including the results for one staff member's job interview. Third, don't rely on the website. I did finally talk to the manager who stated I would have an appointment on Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Great. However, I made the critical mistake of looking up the grooming hours on the web which clearly indicated that on Sunday, the groomers open at 9:00. So I showed up a few moments after nine to a smiling staff who knew I was the person who has reported them to the manager. They refused to serve me because I was not there at 8:00. Thank God for PETCO. Yes, it is smaller than PetSmart, but in all honesty, that gives this place the edge it needs. Despite the fact that in my mind I know - absolutely know - this is a national chain store, it does not feel like it. It's the small, quaint size of this PETCO with its local flavor and feel (with staff members looking like they actually belong to my lovingly ecclectic neighborhood with tats, piercings, cool eyeglasses) - which is what makes it the winner over PetSmart any day. There is also a more ambient pet-friendly warmth at this PETCO that seems to be missinng even from other PETCOs in town. The staff here really loves animals. As a cat dude myself, I find their selection of cat treats, toys, food, and scratching posts to be of much higher quality and abundance at this PETCO. Also, infinitely easier to navigate than the PetSmart. If you have a four-legged friend in your home, then this is the pet store for you. read more

Every time I go here, which lucky for my dog, is usually about once a week, I have a great experience. All the employees here are so friendly and also very helpful. The store has a great selection of organic foods for dogs in the back that I usually can't find at the big stores around town. If you're pet has food allergies (corn, wheat, rice or other grains), this is the place to find the largest selection of treats and food in town. My golden retriever loves the Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison food. I know, she is spoiled, but totally deserves it. Parking is convenient and the store stays open until 9pm on the weekdays. read more

When I asked to speak to the manager , 2 employees looked at each other and asked the other who would that be? There is no one on the floor to help. They do a very poor job of restocking and as a result are always out of stock . I've brought my dogs for grooming here for the past 4 years and the employees I knew of transferred to further locations and the ones currently here don't care for the dogs. They're not friendly, they forgot to put my appointments in twice already and I've seen the groomer tug the dog around on the table. Their grooming service hours are ever changing due to failure to hire adequate staff or schedule them consistently. I can't make an appointment for just nail trimming either, since it's walk in only, and the last couple of times I came after work, groomers had left early. The only way to get service seems to be calling every time before coming in, asking for the day's grooming hours and how long the wait might be (sometimes 1 hr wait). This PETCO smells a little worse than other PETCO and pet stores but it may have been the Rodents in the corner because those guys were HORRIFIC. Cages looked disgusting, gross. Onto the positive; they have a HUGE selection of Organic, Grain-Free, those kinds of stuffs in the back. Large Blue Buffalo and other high-end brands for our 4-legged best friends. Price is decent, especially with your PETPALS card. I really liked how they had the bulk treat buffet area covered because MOST PETCO's do not have them covered and it looks nasty with bugs flying on op of them and everything. So kudos for that. The guys at the registers are super friendly and nice. They also have some treats at the front for your doggies to enjoy while shopping and samples of some holistic dog food as well for you to try. read more

Yay for Petco! They are the only pet store that carries Halo. What else is there to say about Petco other than their prices are better than the other major pet store. I am not too crazy about this location because Shepherd can be a headache, and the parking lot is a little funny. Other than this, I always find what I am looking for because things are easy to find here. The employees are super helpful and are eager to help, always asking if you need help finding anything. The layout is good, but the lighting is kinda funky; it could use brighter lights. It's always easy using coupons plus I love my rewards card which I earn $5 reward after spending $100. I am thankful for this location because I don't have to drive out of my way to find one. read more

I've been to a Petco at another location and was spoiled. The location in Shepard was not clean and machines did not work properly.

I've bought all my dogs items here for over 15 years. Decided to try the new vet services for their shots. They take your pelt behind a locked door for the shots. Weird but ok. The next afternoon, one of my guys was in severe distress. He was clearly dehydrated and one eye was rolled up into his head. I took him back to petcos vet. Waited 10 minutes for someone to show up. Explained to the assistant what happened. He disappeared behind the locked door and came out a few minutes later and said this: The vet is on a conference call with all the other petco vets and their manager. She was not available and they didn't have the medication on hand to treat him. Told me to go to a 24 hour vet. 1200 dollars later I fixed their screw up.. Do not use this quack shack if you love your pets. read more

My dog came here for his first bath done by groomers. Scheduling over the phone was easy, dropping him off and picking him up was no problem. He came out fresh and clean! I've always tried to blow dry him, but unsuccessfully. They did it and I've never seen his fur so shiny and soft! He looks and smells great. They did a great job trimming his nails, too. I love PetCo. I don't trust other pet stores with my animals. The customer service at PetCo is always great and the staff is helpful. I like that most of the workers actually care about animals rather than being random people off the streets who are just thirsty for money. This place always has healthy animals for adoption. The times I have gotten animals (two hamsters, hermit crabs, and a fish) they have all died within a month. With adoption through PetCo, I have had many animals (guinea pigs, fish, lizards, frogs, and we've even adopted two puppies) that had been rescued by PetCo and taken care of until we could adopt them. I go to PetCo incredibly often to get things for my guinea pigs and they are never out of stock. This store rarely fails to disappoint! read more

Unfortunately I cannot recommend the grooming service. Upon picking up my dog after getting a full service grooming, his ears looked dirty and he still had matting on his belly. After getting home I've had to finish cleaning his ears and fix the matting myself. read more

Lies about Pricing, Laughs in your face! Rude, Unprofessional, Poor Veternarian Skills! We brought our 6 month old kitten to Thrive Affordable Vet Care inside Petco because they were friendly over the phone and offered a reasonable price $125-$175 total for spaying. We made an appointment and were told it would be $10 for the exam and then she could be spayed after the results from blood work came back. We showed up for the appointment, greeted with a smile, and taken back to a patient room. A vet tech came in to talk about our kitten and ask questions. Was she eating? Has she had her rabies shot? Then he kindly said the total today would be $55 for blood work. I assumed my husband may have only written down part of the information, thinking $10 for the exam and $45 for blood work, so I paid. He took her back to another patient room for the blood work. When he brought her back she had a bandage on her leg. I asked what happened and he said she blew a vein because the needle was too large. He said she would be fine and that I could take the bandage off when we got home. I was surprised because the VIP Pet Care in Pet Supplies Plus I took her to previously never had that problem. VIP Pet Care had seen her twice, once for her 3 in 1 set of shots and a second time for her second set of shots, rabies shot, and chip implant. Kristen Cleary, D.V.M. (veterinarian) then came into the patient room to ask if I had any questions and to confirm drop off and pick up times. Then we left. Thrive Affordable Vet Care called 3 days later to let us know her results came back and she was ready for surgery. We came back 2 days after (per the scheduled appointment) to drop off our kitten. Upon arrival we were asked if our kitten has fasted in the morning and we said no, she ate a little breakfast (1/4 cup). We were told that she was supposed to fast and that their would be a $25 extra charge for a shot for her naseua. We were not happy about this because we were not told by Kristen Cleary nor the vet tech about fasting 5 days prior nor from the employee that called 2 days prior to confirm the results of her blood work. We left snd came back several hours later to pick her up. Upon arriving my husband was told the total charge was $214 for the spaying, naseua shot, pain medication, and cone for her neck. We were shocked! We were told $125-$175 total when we called to make the appointment, paid $55 for blood work 5 days back, now another $214, for a total of $269! My husband became firm and said, "No, we were told $125 for spaying and that's all we're paying. We were not told our kitten was to fast and we were not told pain medication, naseua shots, and neck cones would be extra. You're holding our kitten hostage and requesting we pay more than what was agreed upon." The employee laughed at him and he replied, "This isn't funny, we're not paying $214 today." The employee went to the back of the facility behind closed doors for several minutes. She came back out with Kristen Cleary, D.V.M. (veterinarian) and two vet techs to speak with my husband. The employee said they made a few calls and would accept $150 total. He paid and left with our kitten. When he brought her home she had another bandage on her leg, two shaved front legs and her entire stomach shaved! The last time I took my kitten to get spayed there was a small shaven patch on her tummy and neither of her legs were shaven! I will NEVER use Thrive Affordable Vet Care again! I will tell everyone I can about this awful experience! read more

This particular location is a little bigger than the one I used in North Houston, so that is a plus. They also have a great selection of products. Most of my dealings with this location are with the groomer service. I have taken my pooch here a few times. They do not do as good of a job as the one I used in Kingwood previously, but it's better than what I would do. I am confused and disappointed that there is only employee who actually grooms the dogs, that just does not seem very efficient. There at least needs to be an apprentice, I would think. I have had a few scheduling hiccups also, but the groomer was very accommodating when I arrived and my appointment was on the books for another day. read more

The remodeling is great, but the employees are awful. I went to get a mouse for my snake, & the employee forgot me immediately. I waited for 10 minutes for help before going back to the counter, where the employee behaved as if I was disrupting his day. After another employee finally got the mouse, I went back to the counter and that same first rude guy couldn't ring up my order even though the SKU was clearly marked on the box. The other employee kept referring to me as "Friend," which was really disturbing. It's not a Coen brothers movie; speak like a normal person. read more

This is my favorite PETCO in the Houston area, simply because the employees seem to be genuinely interested in customer needs. I brought our 12-week-old pup here (his first pet store outing) and he was extremely nervous. The staff actually noticed his demeanor and helped calm him down by petting him and giving him a biscuit. He then mellowed out and had fun looking at the toys and sniffing around the dog food aisle. (PS, he likes IAMS best). This store is neither the most modern nor the largest, but due to the great atmosphere the staff creates, it's #1 in my book. read more
