Worst customer service I have experienced to date. I came in to check out the store as I was waiting for an order at Noah's next door and was shocked! The first thing I saw when I walked in was a Golden Retriever running loose around the store as the owner was trying to chase it down. As this was happening, the employees nearby laughed to themselves and showed no effort in trying to help her or at least shut the front door to stop it from running out. To make matters worse, right before the owner finally caught her dog, he pooped on the floor. She walked over to a station to get some poop bags but they were empty so she came back and kindly (and quietly because she was obviously embarassed) asked for some help cleaning up the mess. The employee rolled her eyes once she walked away and remarked to another employee that "the customer should clean up her own dog's mess" and continued to joke/complain about the customer even though she was in earshot because they didnt think she understood much as she was foreign. On top of that fiasco, I walked around for about 30 mins and was not greeted once nor asked if I needed assistance. I had to ask them about a few things and they had absolute 0 knowledge about the products they were selling. The small animals look poorly taken care of as there was one dead mouse and a few cages had food bowls that were empty. The fish section looked neglected (several dead fish in almost ALL tanks) and though I did end up buying 4 neon tetra, all died within a month even though my tank is extremely healthy and all other fish in there have been alive for 8+ months. This is defintely not the place to go if you want quality customer service and someone who really cares about animals. read more

So it was my puppy's first groom so I was nervous about leaving him there. I dropped him off at 10AM. I asked the lady how long will it be and she quoted me 3-4 hours but not longer than 4 hours. It was already 3PM... FIVE hours later and he still wasn't ready. My puppy was there from open to close, he was unevenly cut. Our pups favorite spot (probably because he always get tons of treats from the workers)! They know us by our dogs name and we don't even come in all that regularly. Items are expensive, and you can definitely get most things cheaper somewhere else if you do your research, but for the convenience it is worth it. I live in Dixon and have gone to the Davis Petco many of times for my pets needs. But no more. The employees are very nice, they aren't the problem. The problem is with their live food (crickets, worms, etc.) In December they had a couple batches of crickets get shipped to their place that arrived all dead, and I could not purchase crickets from them for a month. It happens, it would of been nice not to make another stop, but hey, I'm an easy going guy. However, today I went in to purchase Wax Worms. I grabbed a can in their refrigerator. Right before it was my turn to pay, I decided it was probably best to look in the can and check them out. I couldn't believe it, half of them were dead, black and decaying. Ok, maybe it's a bad can. I went through every can, and every single one of them were the same. They had about a total of 10 cans. I checked the label, and the date November was on it. Now, this could mean use by November or when they were shipped, but in either case, live food isn't going to last 2 months. Why are these worms not being replaced? Is anyone checking these things? This was essentially the straw that broke the camel's back. Yeah it's a good place to purchase dog and cat food, litter, etc. But I have more animals than that, and if you are going to sell live food, you better make sure it's actually alive. I quickly was able to purchase 5 times the amount of Wax Worms online at only double the cost of what Petco was asking. I'm tired of being disappointed. There's nothing super special about Petco other than that, if you have your pet with you, they are totally ok with you bringing it in and they even have free dog treats at the checkstands for your little pooches. I don't know what it is, but checking out is TERRIBLY slow every single time I go in (often even with only one or two people ahead of me). I want to blame it on the customer, but I don't know. I worked in retail long enough to know that it isn't hard to get your customers to move more quickly by anticipating their moves and reacting ahead of time. Sigh, at least the employees are nice and it seems that being good with animals is a (obvious) pre-requisite for being hired- so there is that. They have good prices overall and there are often coupons and rewards you can get, so I always go back here for that reason. read more

Kinda shocked at the 2 star rating. You can't down rate a store because you can find cheaper things online!!! That is like saying " oh this hamburger was great, but I know a place in Idaho that sells the same hamburger for 2 dollars less, so I am gonna say this hamburger sucks" ^^ logical flaw: different circumstances apply to the place in Idaho vs the hamburger you just ate. Maybe the tax rate and rent is way lower in Idaho and that is why the burger is cheaper! Similar to online shopping vs Petco. You can probably get it for cheaper, but then you have to worry about whether or not your pet will actually like the product you buy. If they dont, it is gonna be a hassle to return! Also, there is something to be said about being able to physically compare differing nail trimmers in hand vs. virtually when making a purchase. I mean dont get me wrong I buy most animal related things online, I just feel I had to defend a place when criticism is unduly given. Anyways, today I went to the grooming station because I felt that a groomer forgot to clip one my dog's nails. Even though it was a month since they clipped his nails, Lynn clipped that nail and all the others for no charge. My dog hated this, and poor Lynn had to get down on the floor to cut his nails, but she did it with a smile. After, I bought some rawhide from their excellent selection, gave it to my dog, and he forgot the whole ordeal happened. Obviously, Petco is a chain. It's nothing fancy, but it sure as hell's got everything you need for your pet if you so unfortunately become an inhabitant of an in-the-middle of no mall, no shopping, no other pet store town called Davis, be grateful. Unless you think it's wiser to waste money and gas going to woodland's pet extreme to find the same exact things at prices that are significantly higher than Petco's, then you better be thankful that you've got a one stop shop like Petco in town. Contrary to some reviewer's negative experiences at Petco, I've always had pleasant visits to this particular location. I mainly browse the fish section, so this review will mostly be the fish arena of Petco in Davis. Basically, they've got everything you'd need to keep a happy healthy aquarium at home. Believe me, I've got 3 tanks and counting in my humble Davis abode. The fish here are healthier than many other places I've seen, including fish specialty stores around Sacramento and San Jose. None of the fish I've browsed seem to have fallen victim to ick, anchor worms or any other types of common diseases fish in stores are often exposed to. This may be a result of the knowledgeable and caring staff in the department. The person who is in charge of the aquatic department is super helpful, and although he gets excited and easily strikes up a long conversation with you, his ultimate motive is to HELP. He has offered a lot of advice without your asking, but leaves me more informed after every visit. He has offered to order species Petco does not normally carry for us, such as different breeds of shrimp, crawfish or freshwater crabs and even offered to share some of his java fern he has at home with me and a friend. "I can bring it in and hold it in a bag for you if you come later this week," he says. And because they're not getting paid commission, they're not trying to sell you anything. Their willingness and enthusiasm to help stem from a genuine appreciation for the animals they sell, and you can't get any better than that. So Petco Davis, 4 stars for you. I bring my dog in for grooming about once a month. She's kind of a nervous nelly but she does well here, the staff is so nice! She's a pug, so she's smaller, she gets the works (wash, nails, glands) and a bag of treats for less than $25. I think the lady that usually helps us name is Miranda, shes great. read more

This is one of the larger Petco locations I have seen, but there aren't too many animals on display. They have plenty of little fish, lizards, and turtles, but otherwise, the only larger animals I saw were the dogs brought in by customers and a bird. Tons of animal supplies here - make sure not to eat the tasty-looking cat/dog treats at the entrance! Friendly staff. Just don't buy a beta fish - they really don't look good in coloration, in fact, some of them are floating upside-down (aka dead)! read more

As far as pet stores go, I don't think PETCO is so special. In fact, I think they're kinda pricey. But, alas, they seem to be the most convenient place in Davis to get stuff for my lil mutt. My review mostly focuses on their grooming. Be forewarned: A 15 pound dog is considered a MEDIUM dog, and you will be charged $40+ to get him not stinky anymore. Personally, I don't think any animal that can be held with ONE of my weak arms that are never exercised (except to carry my mutt) should be considered a MEDIUM dog. I think the highway robbery they do with their grooming, aptly illustrates how their prices are just plain outrageous. read more

When I got my first pet that wasn't a caged or water animal, this place offered these low cost vaccination clinics on certain weekends that helped a poor college student save $$ while keeping my kitties healthy. Ok so it kinda felt like a factory line but it was very convenient. I like that they stock a lot of higher end cat foods (Blue Buffalo and Wellness Core are my go to brands) so I don't have to drive around to find them elsewhere. I agree with other reviews that if you have the time to wait for shipping you can do much better online. I have snakes and it is really nice knowing that I can always go here and get a heating pad or heating lamp bulb if mine burn out unexpectedly. They have a pretty generous return policy so if you want to try something you are not sure your pet will like this is a great place to do it. If your pet likes it yeah you paid a little bit extra but if they did not you could return it without all the hassle of shipping. I would NEVER buy a live pet here. They had an awesome reptile specialist for a while and so their reptiles were healthy but since that person moved on they all look to be in various stages of sickness. I really like that they allow the ASPCA to come on Saturdays to show off the pets they have for adoption. It is a great way to get a puppy fix! read more

WARNING do NOT let Dr. Emma Hummer with VETCO touch your dog!!! I witnessed her with a little puppy and his owner being verbally shamed, yelled at and abruptly treated ALL BECAUSE this little puppy cried loudly during a shot. She was extremely rough EXTREMELY rough and the puppy tried to go on the neck of his owner and was crying. The Dr yelled at the young lady that the puppy was extremely BAD and she(the owner) condoned the behavior. (The puppy was crying and scared) she was YELLING saying the lady needs to work on the puppy at home by holding him forcefully until he stops crying. Seriously?? The owner was trying to calm her terrified puppy appropriately. The owner said he was adopted from the shelter and she didn't know his history but he is timid and afraid of new people touching him. The puppy NEVER tried to bite but if I were the puppy I would have snapped at that Dr! This Dr was mean, forceful and I myself will NEVER let this Dr touch my pet again. Can you imagine If this Dr had to perform emergency service on my animal and I wasn't there? Imagine what she would do when the owner was not there if she did all of this today when an entire crowd was watching?? The shaming of this poor, terrified puppy and owner was appalling. It was obvious this owner loved her puppy, was kissing her puppy, telling him he would be okay and to me standing behind the lady the puppy looked very well cared for. The owner had tears in her eyes. It was embarrassing and heart wrenching for all of us who had to watch this Dr behave in this manner. We all looked at each other in absolute shock!! Keep your pet away from DR HUMMER at VETCO. I hope that lady never brings her dog back. I know I won't be going back. I love Petco and the people who work there but I don't trust Dr. Hummer. I must note that Gabby, who works in VETCO, is SO sweet and you can tell she loves working with the animals along with the other employees. She checked those of us in line in with a smile on her face. She greeted our animals so lovingly... the way they deserve to be treated. The Indian employee is extremely unprofessional and rude. I bought a training service package (two pack). I didn't find it help it helpful so I wanted to return the second part of the package. He said he remembers that I returned the package already therefore I cannot get anymore money back. REMEMBER? There is absolute no proof, no paperwork saying I returned it. Now I feel scammed of my money-- lost my money, didn't even go to the training service, and couldn't get the return. I would not recommend anyone to get their training service. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would. I came here to help my mom go surprise shopping for a hamster for my little sister's birthday. Of course I wanted to find the cutest hamster available and send a picture of the little fur ball for my moms approval. The only cashier left a line full of people just to yell at me for taking a picture of a hamster for my little sister as if I knew what Petco "corporate policy" was. This store and its employees are mostly great. I find it interesting that some here do not want to pay slightly higher prices than at WalMart and Target, and others complain that there are no other pet shops in Davis. The two things are closely related. If you insist on buying the cheapest, save that reaction for your clothing and such. Pet supplies and services are for "family members". If you insist on saving small amounts, you will drive even Petco out. Remember, that is what happened to the small, owner-run pet shops. read more

All I wanted was to buy a goldfish for my tank, and I ended up getting a lecture from a know-it-all employee who told me a goldfish can't happily live in a 2.5 gallon tank and that if I think it's good that my fish have all lived to be over 3 years old, I should think again because they can live to be 30. And, according to her never-ending fishtastic knowledge, Bettas cannot live with any other fish. At all. Get real. I know in ideal conditions, Koi could potentially live to be 30... but, the last time I checked, a $2 Petco special goldfish's chances of living to be even just 5 aren't that great. Unless I'm some sort of fish magician that can bring them back from the dead or, better yet, cast an anti-aging spell on it the moment I get home. Not to mention, I've had many happy Betta-goldfish duos live in peace in my 2.5 gallon tank... In fact, the Bettas all seem to LOVE having company. She ended up refusing to allow me to get the goldfish. On the other hand, the rest of the employees have been very nice the other times I've been here, and the animals look like they're well taken care of. This review is only for their stock of dog/puppy stuff. I feel like I go to this Petco every week to pick up something for my puppy. (Yup, she is crazy spoiled.) Only because I can walk here. Yeah, Petco is more expensive than both Target and Walmart but they have a wider selection. And certain brands of food are not sold at Target and Walmart. I was surprised to find that sometimes the Petco is out stock for the smaller bags of Blue Buffalo puppy. The staff is very friendly and very understand and flexible for returns. My puppy ended up hating a 30lb. bag of dog food I bought. Even though I did not have a receipt they spent the time to look up my purchase so I could get full refund. And when the Nature's Miracle nozzle broke off the 1.5 gallon, the Petco staff still let me return it. What I recommend: Bring your pet. They will have so much fun walking up the toy aisle. read more

The store is small so they don't have the same variety as the larger box stores, but they had everything I needed. The store was neat and clean even though there were tons of people and pets roaming the store. Every Saturday there is an adoption event for local dogs and cats - they're so adorable. read more

Called in because I had been waiting 24 hours for an order pick up and had heard nothing from the store. When someone finally picked up they asked for my name and then told me they would check. Instead of placing me on hold or muting their call, they proceeded to loudly talk to other employees and customers in the store. Then forgot my name and asked me over again what my name was. When they couldn't find my name they gave me the list of all customers who had order pick ups (this seems inappropriate) and then asked if I was sure my last name was what it was and wasn't Gomez. When I asked who I should call since they clearly didn't get my order they said they didn't know maybe customer service. They didn't provide me with the number for customer service and didn't seem remotely interested in helping me. Called customer service (atrocious experience), turns out Petco cancelled my order and didn't think they needed to notify me about it. Also if you order with a gift card you have to give them the number for the gift card so they can refund you, it doesn't automatically go back. You have to call to find this out and if you don't have the card they don't know what to do with you. Their phones also cut in and out so even if you can get a representative who knows what they are talking about, you only hear half of what they are telling you. I would shop local. Just way too expensive. They're the only pet store in town and they stick it to you. Customer service ranges from good to abysmal. On the plus side they are usually well stocked with a good range of food and pet products. For people who are looking for healthy animals from a massive chain store, I think your expectations are a little high. I came with our dog for a nail trim, since my sister and I attempted to cut our dog ourselves, but were unsuccessful when it came to touching his paws. He's still iffy about that because his original owner used human nail clippers on him. So we thought why not it's only 20 for nails, deodorant spray, and teeth cleaning. But when we got there it was an additional 5 for teeth cleaning. But they said they could trim between his pads since he was a small dog, and they did a lovely job! The girl also trimmed our dog's legs and face (which he wouldn't let us touch). They were very nice and quick! read more

It's a small convenient place but the products are quite expensive after comparing it to what I've found online after researching. I also feel that this PetCo isn't well kept inside and doesn't look clean or spiffy. The aquatics area leaves much to be desired; for example the fish tanks look dirty and skewed and I've identified MULTIPLE dead fishes in the various tanks. The fish themselves don't look very healthy either. Fish products are expensive with not much of a variety (plants, decor etc). The staff sometimes seem half-hearted when they help you. And you have to seek out help most of the time; no one really comes to ask you how you're doing. They also don't seem well educated in the animals and give mixed information sometimes. Such as one guy who seemed to think I wouldn't need much to set up a tank versus another guy who seemed to try to sell me as many products that I "need" as he could. I've been to a better PetCo before where the space was much neater and the animals well-kept and healthier. read more

I brought my 2 dogs in a few days ago to be groomed and was pretty disappointed with the customer service I received. Walking into the grooming area felt like I was walking into a smelly rainforest. It was very uncomfortably warm and humid. I understand that it's closed off and doesn't get the air flow like the rest of the store, but could they at least turn on the a/c or a fan? Both of the women I talked to at the desk seemed like they really didn't want to be there. Everybody is entitled to have an off day, but wow you guys lol. They barely made eye contact, never smiled once or tried to be friendly at all toward me or the dogs. My pups looked good when I picked them up (even though they didn't get bandannas like they normally do), so I wanted to give a star for the grooming service and also for the nice woman at the register who gave them some attention and complimentary treats. read more

Went there early this afternoon and got everything I need to setup a chameleon habitat. Everything was average to above pricing, no real complaint there. However, we didn't speak to anyone until we got to the register and we were in there shopping for about 45 minutes. The cashier was friendly and she gave us a vote of confidence that we had gotten everything we needed to house a new chameleon. Later this evening, once we had completely set up our new habitat, we went back to purchase a chameleon. We got there at 7:55, the website and door both said that they close at 9, there were other customers inside still shopping, and they had already shut the doors and when I saw an employee and asked if we could come in, they said they closed early. We said we were wanting to buy a chameleon and we're paying in cash, and they said to come back tomorrow as they were unable to do the transaction. I was told this after patiently waiting 5 minutes for them to ring up another customer lmao. Purchased a Puppy Level I class for my dog. The cashier said we cannot sign up a date yet because the trainers were busy. Instead, he told us to expect a phone call the following day from one of the trainers. Unfortunately, a week past, no single phone call at all. So I decided to call back, but the woman who picked up the phone had a rude attitude and very impatient. And she still said I need to wait for the phone call. And it turns out we have to wait for half a month to enroll a class. Very bad experience! Not recommend al all! read more

This review only pertains to the grooming department. Oh my god, don't ever go to this place if you love your pet. I've used to take my dog here for baths for years, but they have gotten seriously bad the last few times I was there. They over charge on some random special handling fees for my dog being older. Sanitary trims used to be included but now they tag on an extra $12 to $15. The last time I was there, I popped in without them noticing, and I caught them swearing and yelling at my dog, calling it names I can't type on yelp and shouting shut up. This type of behavior is just unacceptable and unprofessional! The bottom line is that I just don't trust them. The question is: would you? And would you risk your pet? Don't do it! Sometimes I confuse my dog as a child. I like to think that if he could speak his first word would be "Petco." Rather the first word he could understand was "Petco." Some dogs react to the word "Walk?" My dog reacts to "Petco?" When he hears the word he runs to the front door and pulls me all the way across the street and into petco. He cleans their floors for them. Picking up any loose kibble. He is known by the staff as a regular. When he doesn't want to leave he lays across the floor, smiles, and wags his tail. When we happen to walk by and it is closed he sits at the automatic door and wonders why it won't open for him. He will lift one paw up to the glass and longingly stare into the store. I like to spoil him at Petco. And it is the only store that sells the homeopathic organic dog food with dried fruit in it. If they ever stopped carrying it I don't know what I would do. I think if my dog ever ran away...I would know where to look. read more

I took my dog in for a grooming appointment. Very disappointed with the quality of the job they did. Originally I was told it would take 2 hours to complete, but she landed up being there for much longer. The groomer (Sonia is who was listed on the bill) cut her nails too short so she came home with some still bleeding and blood on the hair on her paws. Additionally, my usually very happy and lovey dog laid on her bed in the corner of the room far away from my family which isn't normal for her after going to the groomers. I thought that they would do a decent job since I am not that good at trimming my dogs nails, but now I will have to learn to do it myself or go to a professional groomer because I do not trust them with my dog anymore. Their whole grooming facility should have windows so you can see through at all times and not be hidden in the back for anything to happen while my dog is there. read more
