Very sickly gecko, for sale at Davis Petco

Saw the most sickly, skinniest leopard gecko I have ever seen. Have visited/ purchased from this Petco for years, even once got a pet there; I know big-box pet stores have a bad rep for caring for animals, but this is just sad. Clearly staff are not caring properly for animals, due to personal negligence and/or poor cooperate oversight/ support. I will not shopping there again, as long as animal treatment remains this poor. Really shameful for a company "where healthy pets go".

I want to first clarify that I am not a Karen. I've never written a negative review before, but this breaks my heart. I want to share my recent experience at Petco, specifically regarding the condition of the leopard geckos. The store's conditions are alarming--the water bowls have visible MOLD. To add on top of that, leopard geckos store fat in their tails, so the fact that all of their geckos are extremely skinny is not a good sign. This has been an issue for as long as I've lived in Davis, I moved here last year. I purchased a gecko from here earlier this year, trying to save it. Unfortunately, it passed away after a few months. I consulted a reptile specialist who advised against buying from Petco due to potential diseases. Our gecko had major health issues, despite our efforts to provide proper care. I've had a leopard gecko for maybe 10 years now, I know how to take care of them. His tank had the perfect humidity gradient, and lots of places for him to climb and hide. He had everything he could ever need in there. There was no risk of impaction. The specialist's advice and treatment were unable to save our pet. The crickets purchased from Petco were suspected to be the source of a black spot in our gecko's stomach, leading to its passing. I urge Petco to address these concerns promptly and reassess their animal care practices. Potential customers should be aware of the risks associated with purchasing animals from this store. For a place that specializes in pet supplies and pets, it is extremely alarming how much neglect and abuse is shown for these poor animals. I wish they would do a better job of taking care of them. I'm disgusted.

Stopped by Petco yesterday so see if I could find a new lid for my Fiddler Crab enclosure (they're true escape artists), and it was a pretty great experience! I am always excited when I need something from Petco - it's like visiting a miniature zoo. This was my first time in having a certain product in mind, and luckily enough they had exactly what I needed! Though, I will say it took a good couple minutes to find what I was looking for due to there being no available staff to ask. I have found the service at this particular Petco to be a little hit or miss, but far from anything that would ruin my shopping experience there (because again, it's like a miniature zoo). I am very happy to have a pet store in Davis that carries food and other necessities for my crabs though, because while their prices might be higher than average for any given product it's hard to beat the convenience! I will certainly be back again!

Fake!! You want a moss ball for companionship, think again!! The moss balls at petco are merely a scam with DEAD moss wrapped around rock. Led to believe this moss ball was alive only to reach the horrifying conclusion that it was dead the whole time.

Shout out to Natalie for doing a great job with Buster's haircut today! With the hot temps coming our way, I'm happy that Buster will be more comfortable during the summer. For reference, Buster is an almost two year old, 14 lbs shih tzu, poodle, terrier mix. He loves playing with a double doodle that has 50 lbs on him, so he can get pretty matted, especially behind the ears. PRICE: I paid $95 plus tip for Buster's bath, haircut, and the Essentials Plus package. His grooming appointments usually cost $85-$100. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Natalie talked about how short she recommended cutting, depending on the level of matting. I gave her free reign on how short his haircut would be, as my only preference is that he isn't overheating too much this summer. Natalie was friendly, listened attentively, and was overall very pleasant to interact with. APPOINTMENT/COMMUNICATION: Setting up an appointment was easy on the Petco website. I received a text message when Buster was ready for pick up. Pretty seamless experience. Thank you, Natalie! We will be back.

I usually do an online pick up order for my dog's food and it's a nice easy process. Staff are friendly and parking is always easy.

Alex, Kaylin and Maya are great! We brought our 6-month old puppy for socializing and life skills…read more She is doing great! I can't say working with them directly caused this, but I'm sure it was a big part! The adolescent class and entire experience is very well run. They gave great advice in my questions after class. I was hesitant to start working with them, but I'm so glad I did. I was a little put off by the few reviews saying how rough Alex was with dogs, but I have never met someone more empathetic to dogs. Alex can be a little abrasive to people (which he openly admits!), and my guess is the reviewers took it personally and resorted to slandering a local business. I don't believe the reviewers. Also, keep in mind the bias of online reviews, and especially online reviews of pet-related things. No one reviews for an average experience, you get mostly 1- or 5-stars (sorry to contribute to this bias). I was hesitant to pay $75 for a brief consult, but in retrospect, I wouldn't want non-vetted dogs in class!

After looking around, we were really impressed by Laughing Dogs' approach and reviews. We started with the adult group class when she was almost five months old, plus a one-on-one with Alex, and we've learned so much--not just about training, but about dog psychology and philosophy. Seeing real progress with our pup has been awesome, and now we're in our fifth month of classes! We also use their Daily Enrichment service since we're both at work most of the day, and it's been a game-changer. She's always so excited when they pick her up, and we love knowing she's getting great training and exercise while we're gone. More recently, we hosted a family gathering and one of the family members brought their shy, reactive dog. That dog had had previously shown her teeth to ours. Beforehand, we reached out to Alex and Kaylin for advice, and they gave us clear, practical guidelines to follow. Thanks to their help, the family gathering went smoothly, and our dog handled it perfectly. We can't recommend Laughing Dogs enough!

We are bringing our Puppy in for a Follow up for 3 months ago, our puppy had heart surgery, so we have been here a few times now, coming from Stockton. Worth the drive for a pet that you would call a family member. The campus grounds are super clean, lots of wildlife, birds, squirrels, etc. Not sure if they take any animal in, or if you have to have a referral, like we did from our local vet. And they were alot cheaper then the vet and had more openings.

I brought my dog here for emergency surgery after a serious injury to his leg. My local vet…read morereferred us there and had called ahead, so they were expecting us and had 2+ hours notice we were coming. (6PM arrival) Fast forward another 4+ hours to 10:30 PM. We finally get to talk to a resident, Dr. Olivia Taubenfeld, who tells me she doesn't think it's a degloving injury - without even examining him yet. I tell her I don't what that is, but describe seeing exposed tendons, ligaments, and possibly bone (which is also what I described when admitting him hours before.) Another 2+ hours go by and they finally examine him. (1AM) Dr. Taubenfeld's report? Degloving injury. Had anyone bothered to look under the temporary bandage put on by the first local vet, or even listened to my description of his wound, they would have seen and understood the severity of the injury. Now they're recommending amputation and treatment options have changed drastically because they neglected seeing him for so long. After getting a second opinion, I decide to pull him out of this hospital so he can get proper care. I'm told they'll do a wound cleaning first thing in the morning. I communicate persistently all day, making sure they're aware of my intention to transfer him that afternoon. I go to pick him up at 4 PM - they haven't cleaned his wound yet. I wait hours, desperate to get him out of there and to a vet who has the capacity to give him proper care and attention. At one point (6 PM) I can hear him crying and whining from behind one of their exam room doors. Apparently, they finally got around to cleaning his wound, only without proper sedation and pain management. Torture. Soon after, they bring him out of that room to me. While I'm carrying him to leave, as soon as we get outside, he starts peeing in my arms. (Sweet boy waited until he was outside.) I place him down, and he stands there peeing for I swear at least one 1 minute. His bladder had to be completely full. Had they even let him relieve himself the 24 hours he was there?! I will never bring another animal here.
