Petco lost a customer today. We've been loyal customers at our local Petco since they opened 30 years ago. Today, I went in to get a refill on cat litter, using the same refillable containers we've used all along. When I went to checkout, the new manager informed me that she could not sell me the cat litter because the containers were "non-conforming" and too big (by 8 ounces). I told her that I've been using the same containers for years and no one had ever mentioned that they were "non-conforming." She replied "No, sorry, that has always been the rule!" (implying that I was lying). I offered to pay the difference and she said that was not an option. I offered to dump out the difference and she said there was no way to verify the correct weight. (Seriously? Eyeball it! It's cat litter ffs!) Then she told me I would have to take the containers back to the refilling station and dump them out! I told her I was leaving them with her and didn't care what she did with them. She told me I was being rude, and I told her she lost a customer. The staff at our local Petco have always been so friendly and helpful, but today was such a departure from the norm. I would give petco grooming 10 stars if i could. NATALIE!!! is your doodle hairgirl. First off- Natalie is so sweet and friendly! I love her energy & personality she's truly a gem. She knows exactly what to do and is so detailed in what she offers. She also made sure i got the discounts available with vital care perks. Her service is great, her energy is awesome, and her care/love for the pups radiate in our interaction. My dog went in shaky because she doesn't like grooming but she came out so happy and GORGEOUS. The full groom/cut is definitely on the pricier side, but I think I found my place. It's the best cut hodu has gotten EVER. The package upgrade is inclusive of most service options (nail buffing, ear cleaning, anal gland expression, etc) that other places have offered individually as add-ons for more $$. I dropped my dog off for about 4-5 hours and was really pleased with the results! Natalie is definitely a popular groomer so it's best to book in advance. Have visited/ purchased from this Petco for years, even once got a pet there; I know big-box pet stores have a bad rep for caring for animals, but this is just sad. Some of the staff here at Petco Davis and the Vetco clinicians that come here to do vaccinations, are some of the worst employees. As a person of color, they lie, BS, and discriminated against me and my dog for calling out their BS. I complained about their system, and they gaslighted me, made me look like I am the crazy one. This employee said his name is Josh told me to "get your dog away from me", when my dog isn't even doing anything to him. Then he lies about being afraid of big dogs. His manager, said her name is Caitlyn, that I cannot discount his experience..then why do you work at a pet store and only for me to see he is playing with a big dog. In the first place he was the one came towards me and my dog. When asked for his manager he says, "No you cannot talk to my manager, Go find her if you can." Like WTF, this is how you people are here? and the vet assistant lies about my dog biting her when it didn't even happen. Back in 2019, when I also brought my dog for grooming, I can hear my dog from the back crying in pain, when I asked the lady all she said was "dogs cry all the time". I have been a customer of Petco/Vetco for years, I was so upset today that I am never coming back to this store after a repugnant experience today. My dogs vaccinations and rabies shot were also done at Petco. We had to bring the papers in at this location when they can just look it up in their system like other Petco stores. I want to first clarify that I am not a Karen. I've never written a negative review before, but this breaks my heart. I want to share my recent experience at Petco, specifically regarding the condition of the leopard geckos. The store's conditions are alarming--the water bowls have visible MOLD. To add on top of that, leopard geckos store fat in their tails, so the fact that all of their geckos are extremely skinny is not a good sign. This has been an issue for as long as I've lived in Davis, I moved here last year. I purchased a gecko from here earlier this year, trying to save it. Unfortunately, it passed away after a few months. I consulted a reptile specialist who advised against buying from Petco due to potential diseases. Our gecko had major health issues, despite our efforts to provide proper care. I've had a leopard gecko for maybe 10 years now, I know how to take care of them. His tank had the perfect humidity gradient, and lots of places for him to climb and hide. He had everything he could ever need in there. There was no risk of impaction. The specialist's advice and treatment were unable to save our pet. The crickets purchased from Petco were suspected to be the source of a black spot in our gecko's stomach, leading to its passing. I urge Petco to address these concerns promptly and reassess their animal care practices. Potential customers should be aware of the risks associated with purchasing animals from this store. For a place that specializes in pet supplies and pets, it is extremely alarming how much neglect and abuse is shown for these poor animals. I wish they would do a better job of taking care of them. Lori is excellent, but otherwise this is the worst Petco on the planet, mainly because the employees are unprofessional, entitled and surly. They act like they don't care about their jobs. It's VERY clear they don't give a sh*t about customers or animals. Why these people have customer service jobs is totally beyond me. Do they even know what that means? They show up late, or just don't show up at all... People with grooming appointments stand outside waiting with their pets in their carriers... Stopped by Petco yesterday so see if I could find a new lid for my Fiddler Crab enclosure (they're true escape artists), and it was a pretty great experience! I am always excited when I need something from Petco - it's like visiting a miniature zoo. This was my first time in having a certain product in mind, and luckily enough they had exactly what I needed! Though, I will say it took a good couple minutes to find what I was looking for due to there being no available staff to ask. I have found the service at this particular Petco to be a little hit or miss, but far from anything that would ruin my shopping experience there (because again, it's like a miniature zoo). I am very happy to have a pet store in Davis that carries food and other necessities for my crabs though, because while their prices might be higher than average for any given product it's hard to beat the convenience! Shout out to Natalie for doing a great job with Buster's haircut today! With the hot temps coming our way, I'm happy that Buster will be more comfortable during the summer. For reference, Buster is an almost two year old, 14 lbs shih tzu, poodle, terrier mix. He loves playing with a double doodle that has 50 lbs on him, so he can get pretty matted, especially behind the ears. PRICE: I paid $95 plus tip for Buster's bath, haircut, and the Essentials Plus package. His grooming appointments usually cost $85-$100. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Natalie talked about how short she recommended cutting, depending on the level of matting. I gave her free reign on how short his haircut would be, as my only preference is that he isn't overheating too much this summer. Please be advised that your dog, if older than a 'puppy', must be vaccinated against distemper and against kennel cough BEFORE you're allowed in Courtney's #3 training class or the advanced class for gaining certification for "Canine Good Citizenship". This info isn't provided before you register. My son showed up with his dog and couldn't do the the class because he lacked the distemper shot. Ok--I took her to get distemper shot and then over phone talked with Courtney that all was set, only that the distemper record is in my name, my address-- she said that was ok. AND she apologized lack of info regarding Petco requirements before a dog can enter adult training class. During that same conversation, Courtney said our dog also needed kennel cough injection. She provided that info to my son when she turned him away for the 1st class--but he is learning disabled...& getting instructions orally doesn't always work ..Besides, WHY isn't ALL info readily available on the website BEFORE you sign up for any training class ?? -- This is Petco's responsibility.( I am NOT faulting Courtney.) We were willing to get that injection too (and I appreciate Courtney apologizing again that such info wasn't provided on Petco's website) BUT, ever since our dog got the distemper shot she has been ill. Completely based off of my experience right now with the floor and register staff. The man, the myth, the legend that is Roman! He saved me today. My poor Aussie has an ear infection and would not let me near his ears so we came in for a muzzle. He kindly showed us our options and expertly a showed us how to fit the muzzle onto our pup. Archer immediately took to Roman and gave no issues. He was the perfect angel with Roman! Roman is magic! The young blonde lady in the register was also so sweet, caring, and helpful with our purchases. Archer also loved her and felt at ease. The best Petco experience ever! Amazing service!! My daughter wanted a hamster (under my supervision). We went to Petco after we had the worst customer service at pet supplies. We were greeted when we came in. My daughter picked out a cage and food and we had questions on the different types of hamsters. The kind human that helped us gave us the information we needed to decide we would like the bigger hamster. We were allowed to meet the hamster in person before we bought the hamster. After we chose the hamster we wanted we were helped with choosing the right size cage and accessories. Such wonderful customer service. If your dog is elderly don't bring them here for grooming, they will do anything to get out of having to groom your dog. Even assume he can't walk or hold himself up. After a rescheduled appointment; a drive from Fairfield to Davis, my pets info already on a profile and accepted to be groomed. Only to be told "we can't take him he's too old" they looked for a list of diseases and defects to suddenly find a reason they could absolutely not take him. Another Petco ended up taking him for grooming so it's JUST this one. But according to all the grooming reviews below I seemed to have dodged a bullet. I needed some hairball formula cat food pronto when my cat started vomiting up hairballs. Went online to Petco.com and found that they offer curbside pick up in Davis even though their store is now also open to the public. I ordered the cat food and a brush and within 15 minutes, I received an email notice that it was ready for pick up! I went over and followed the instructions - called the number, selected option 4 and talked to a salesperson who quickly found my order and asked where I was parked. Within another minute or two, she brought my stuff out to my car with a smile. Super efficient service and I appreciated every minute of it. I'm extremely disappointed in the grooming service my dog received. I'll never return to this location! On June 14th at 3:30 I had a bath and teeth brushing scheduled for my small dog. It took an hour and a half which seemed unusual. When I picked him up he seemed normal and happy to see me. But from that day forward he was extremely itchy and kept biting his paws constantly. I just assumed it was a reaction to the shampoo used. But it only got worse!!! Today as I was petting him and I realized what seems to be evidence of severe scratching. I told them he had sensitive skin so I'm unaware of what happened. He has a terrible scab on his neck and a bite on his stomach. Very unfortunate. I hope something comes out of this. The girl working in the aquatics department is very knowledgeable, but I always have to ask someone at the check out counter to have them get someone to help me. I've came to this store a couple times to purchase fish food and medications, but it always seems like they are low on staff. There stock is also not very good and it seems like no one maintains the fish tanks. I always see dead fish on the filter intakes. I only come here because it's one of the closer pet stores in the city. I went two different times for ghost shrimp and mystery snails, but they were all out. However, they do suggest I call to check on the stock before going to the store. Anyways, I did get two gold Inca snails (myserty snail). They were about the size of a dime when I got them and after four months they have quadrupled in size. I would only recommend this place to get snails as I have not purchased anything other livestock from here. read more

Grooming section is the worst. I booked an appointment for my Pomeranian to get a bath and hair cut. The older lady there said it couldn't be done but they could only give him a bath and trim his nails. That's not what I asked for. She asked if he had his shots and I told her yes she asked where I got the shots done at and the certificate. He had his shots and she made a face and comment when I told her where my dog got his vaccinations and gave her the records. Now this was about a year ago. I decided to give them a second chance, today I came in to get his nails trimmed (walk in only, says online) that older lady is still there and said I had to make an appointment for the nail trimming. I told her I tried but it says it's only walk in.... She said yeah but with Covid there's no walk-ins.l and you can't make an appointment online... Covid? Your not wearing a mask, no one is wearing a mask in the whole building, people are coming in touching everything and all your employees touch everything as well and your still saying because of Covid? What difference does that make? Literally this lady is racist. Again this is not the first time I have a problem in the grooming section with the same lady. This review is going to be based off my experience at the grooming department. My first initial experience in the grooming department for my dog, Barley, were OK. She had different groomers each time.. The groomers got the job done and nothing more nothing less. But I am writing this review to shout out an amazing groomer that I've been going to for the past couple of months. I would like to shout out and give a huge thank you for Barley's groomer, Jeannine, for making our grooming experience such a delightful one! Where to start? When Jeannine first met both of my dogs (Charlie & Barley), she was so gentle and genuinely kind to both. Talked softly, gave them treats, and even took the time to get down on their level to play! This makes such a big difference whenever we come in! She remembers both of my dogs whenever we come in for a visit. One time, she even drew a photo of Barley after her tooth brushing appointment! That was just so sweet and thoughtful of her to do. Keep on the great work, Jeannine, it is greatly appreciated by our little family! For the store department, team members should focus more on customer service, but overall, great prices, and I am happy that this store price matches their competitors. Great for business. Anyway, this only got a 5-star because of the customer care and thoughtfulness from the grooming department! I am a happy customer and so are my fur babies! read more

I walk around to look at some items, there are two guys, one I always see there, he's likely a mgr. or assist. mgr.. I don't think the mgr. heard the guy at the register make that comment. What's up with customer service and lazy people these days(?), it seems to be getting to be a progressively more pathetic state of affairs with retail. Don't ever turn a customer away because you don't want to help them. The guy just continued to sit at the register looking around. There were at least two people that I saw working there. The customer service in this location is terrible. One of the managers is extremely rude to customers and that attitude seems to trickle down to the rest of the staff. This manager refused to sell me a fish based on a complete lack of understanding about what kind of aquarium I had and was extremely rude throughout my interaction while trying to explain my situation and the kind of fish I wanted. Previous times I have frequented this location I have had to wait unnecessarily at least 10 minutes to get assistance despite the fact that the store is never that busy and there are ample staff available to help. We would take our dogs here for grooming from West Sac because the customer service was great in the beginning. Our two dogs would get treats and cute notes but that all stopped after a few washes. We made an appointment for our German Shepherd to be groomed on 05-21-23 at 4 p.m. and this appointment was made a week before. The day of her appointment an employee by the name of River calls my husband at 2 p.m. and with much attitude expressed that they have a 4 hour window and 2 other dogs coming in at the same time that our dog is scheduled and since the other 2 dogs are small he is choosing to take the small dogs in and cancels our appointment and says that he rescheduled our dog for the next weekend at 2 p.m., this man never let my husband speak and hung up on him. I spoke to the manager Lori who apologized on his behalf and seemed to also be surprised by what happened, she advised that we can still come in today at the scheduled time we had but after talking it over with my husband we decided that we didn't want our dogs around their employee. River is very unprofessional and should not be around animals of any sort. As long as River is there we will not be coming back. read more
