Kano with a fully belly and lots of love
    R. G.

We took our 10 month old Doberman (Kano) here for a bath and some goodies after a long weekend at UC Davis. He had been at a board and train in Fresno, where he had been completely neglected and starved, so as you can imagine we were emotional wrecks. We explained what happened to the girls working that day and they were so helpful, loving and kind. Samantha (aunt Sam) went above and beyond to get us all the things we needed from a comfy bed to some relaxing pills and lots of treats. Im grateful the girls here we're so helpful, especially in the state of mind we were in and how scared our pup was. Thank you ladies, here is a pupdate, He is gaining weight, happy and healthy.

Cats didn't enjoy anthropomorphized food from Pet Food Express

I went here for one quick stop and all of the brands were unfamiliar and advertising grain-free, non-gmo, and weird stuff like that. I've gathered from my animal nutrition class that foods like these are just trying to hit a sensitive spot with the new pet-crazed millennial market and aren't actually focused on pet health. For example, there is nothing wrong with grain in dog food, there's just grains that are lacking nutrients that should be avoided. Anyways, I went here to buy some wet cat food, and even with all the weird brands I finally chose one. I figured why not go with a silly brand while I'm here? I got a case of something like Grandma's Chicken Soup. FIRST OF ALL, it was not priced, when I checked out it was about 50$!!! The case wasn't even large. THEN, neither my house cats nor my stray cats I take care of liked it. They would just drink the broth and leave the nasty noodle looking things and the peas and carrots. The food looked cute, like soup, but it was just to get the owners to buy overpriced food. I've also been here before a long time ago to help pick out a healthy dog food for my mom's dog, and it took forever! Again, because of the strange pet foods, it was hard to find one with the ingredients I was looking for. Unfortunately, I had forgotten about that when I went by for cat food.

Really big place that carries a decent amount of stuff. Crazy pet owners looking for a specific type of food (Honest Kitchen in this case) may actually locate said nourishment at this location. Sections are clearly marked: "cat stuff" "dog stuff" etc., etc. which is lovely. There is also a clearly marked wash station for pets also. This could prove useful for those in apartments with pets. Glad they had the type of food we were looking for! And glad that it didn't cost any more than usual.

    Milk replacement for cats
    Yuliana M.

Today was one of my worst day in my life I was rushed to a vet in Davis because my cats were in critical condition. Honestly, I was so frustrated and scared that I didn't even think in right way. I had to grab a milk replacement for my cats so we found the closest pet store and went in. After not sleeping for more than two days and being so stressed out, I met Amirah at your place who was extremely kind and genuinely sympathizing me and my cats. It was such a nice touch especially during all events that I mentioned. Even though that I live in North Natomas, in Sacramento, and this pet store isn't close to us at all I would love to come back! Thank you Amirah, your words meant a world to me today!

This practice burns out young veterinarians, sets them up for failure, and harms patients. I took my animals to this practice 2020-2023. Over that time I noticed a lot of staff turnover and unhappy techs. At a veterinary practice happy employees usually means high quality care. Workers can seldom do their best under harsh labor conditions. Dr Phillips helped initially when my puppy started displaying consistent aggression that did not respond to training, management, sleep schedule changes, exercise changes, or redirection. She prescribed fluoxetine (which takes 6-10 weeks to kick in), and clonidine (a fast-acting med). When the clonidine peaked, my puppy could exist without profound inescapable terror for roughly an hour before once again becoming panicked and impossible to sooth. I requested more frequent clonidine so that both my dog and I could have a more reasonable quality of life while we waited 6 weeks for her UC Davis Veterinary Behavior appointment. Although Dr Phillips has no behavior certifications beyond "fear free", she reviewed a few short videos of my puppy and confidently declared that my dog was "displaying mostly normal puppy behavior" and that "sometimes, as owners, we unintentionally encourage bad behavior." She pronounced my dog's body language to be "loose", ignoring her unmistakable whale eyes and tight face. Dr Phillips knew I had significant experience raising retriever puppies. She knew this dog's highly skilled training team was out of ideas. Yet, Dr Phillips knew more about my puppy's state of mind from a few short videos than either me or her training team knew from countless hours of direct care. Dr Phillips decided I caused these problems because I would rather sedate my "mostly normal" puppy than practice basic training and management. After deciding my puppy's fear and aggression were simply handler error, Dr Phillips not only declined to increase her clonidine dose, but declined to refill it at all. I had three doses left of the only thing that made it possible to safely interact with my dog. But Dr Phillips had completed a few rotations with veterinary behaviorists during vet school (which she referred to as "a lot of training") and she thought it was appropriate to allow my puppy to experience extreme panic 24/7 for the next 6 weeks in case the clonidine "changed her brain chemistry". Never mind the brain chemistry changes that might occur from 6 weeks of extreme prolonged panic. Luckily, a kind soul at another practice had mercy on us and prescribed enough clonidine for us to make it to the veterinary behavior appointment in one piece. The team at UC Davis diagnosed my puppy with generalized anxiety (based in territoriality, fear, overarousal, and resources) and interdog aggression (based in fear). They explained that my puppy's frequent bites were her way of coping with constant panic by redirecting it onto me as her primary caretaker. My puppy was a serious case for her age and would need significant management and medication for the rest of her life, otherwise she would be a danger to me and to the public. They explained that allowing her to panic throughout her puppyhood would have severe consequences for her brain chemistry, and they increased her clonidine dose to protect her from that fate. To be clear: although Dr Phillips put myself, my puppy, and the public in danger with her reckless overconfidence, I do not hold her personally responsible for this mistake. Dr Phillips had been a practicing veterinarian for just over a year at the time and it was clear she had extremely limited mentorship and support. When I later shared my puppy's diagnoses and prognosis with Dr Phillips, I didn't even get a reply. This tells me that this practice doesn't have experienced veterinarians following up on concerning decisions made by new veterinarians. Nobody is walking new veterinarians through reflecting on cases that don't go well, learning from mistakes, or addressing issues that arise with clients who have been with the practice for years. Thanks to the kind veterinarian who took over care urgently without any previous patient relationship, my dog did not seriously injure anyone in the six weeks Dr Phillips wanted her to be functionally unmedicated. But I am extremely concerned that this practice seeks out new veterinarians for cheap labor while ignoring their consequent mentorship responsibility. A less determined dog owner with fewer resources may have accepted Dr Phillips' assessment with potentially disastrous results. If you are considering taking your pet here, proceed with caution.

Patricia clipped my dog's nail so badly it split and bled so I took my dog to the vet to ensure she was okay. It eventually healed on its own but the first picture shows her injury. The store manger, Lauren Hughes reached out quickly and ensured PetSmart took care of the bill, but I was not pleased with the whole interaction and incident that could have been avoided. I was told to book with a different groomer next time. I gave them another chance and specifically booked a different groomer, Celeste for 5/12/26 and selected the bath only option. When I arrived, Patricia told me she would be handling my dog anyway despite informing her I selected Celeste as my groomer but due to Celeste being booked, she would be bathing my dog. I made it clear it was just a bath, however my dog was injured again. I received a call informing me my dogs nail got stuck in a grate and was bleeding. When I informed the manager Lauren, that I was around the corner at a nearby store and would be there shortly to see my dog, they informed me they transported my dog to UC Davis Veterinary Medical Center without my knowledge or consent and only told me after the fact. Luckily it was a split in the nail and she didn't require medical attention. We are hoping her injury will heal on its own but we will monitor it. Two visits. Two injuries. Same groomer. This is not a coincidence--it's negligence. My request for a different groomer was ignored, and basic safety was clearly lacking. I will not be returning. Pet owners should be very cautious.
