I owe UC Davis Vet, the doctors, and the neurosurgeon everything! Specifically, Dr Matte, Dr Harju, and Dr Prodger. My dog started wobbling Friday morning at 9am and by the time it was 9pm, my dog no longer had any feeling in his back two legs. I spent 9 hours at Sage in Campbell (ER vet) just to be sent home and telling me to come back on Monday (3 days later) to see if I could get seen by the Neurologist on Monday. I ended up going home and with my dog not being able to stand at all, I knew this was urgent and ended up going back to the ER within 30 minutes. UCD was recommended since they were only one of two 24/7 vet hospitals that had a neurosurgeon available. Note that you do need a referral to be seen! Thankfully they stated that my dog's situation was extremely urgent and he would be categorized as a P1 patient. They had the MRI completed a few hours later and then carted him to surgery! They constantly called with updates and were the most caring team of doctors I've ever met. Their pricing is also ridiculously fair. Bay Area hospitals were quoting me $20k and everything came out to slightly under $9k for us at UCD. Though we did take our dog home less than 48 hours post op. It's so terrifying thinking about what could've happened if UCD didn't take my dog in with such urgency since they do get busy. I'm worried about if this happens again in the future, but for now, thank you UCD team from the bottom of my heart.

I understand that not ever animal can be saved, but going to Davis I know that the doctors do everything they can to save them and I'll leave knowing I went to the best care. Thank you Dr. Jin for taking care of my little Missy, and getting her into surgery immediately. She kept me updated the entire process and now we are on a long journey of recovery. I couldn't have gotten this far without Dr. Jin & UC Davis.

UC Davis vet team did a GREAT JOB operating and treating Lily's (the bunny) left eye. Given the pictures attached pre- and post-behavior overall, she seems much more lively as a 10.5 year old bunny and seems more likely to be happy and living longer as a result! I would definitely work on getting scheduling and flexibility for delayed traffic improved especially given the 2+ hour drive each way from SF Bay Area. Still, given Lily's happiness and appeared satisfaction I highly recommend them for all rabbits!!

My sweet (healthy) Yoda...thank God I didn't listen!

If I could make it a 0 or negative, I would!! the 'doctor' "strongly" at UC Davis recommended euthanasia for what turned out to be a simple infection!!! I have an 11 year old cat (Yoda) that had not been eating and was lethargic. Having heard such positive things about UC Davis, I took her there (it was a Sunday). There was only 1 other person in the waiting area when I arrived. First thing, I had to pay $310, up front, just to have her seen. They would not allow me to go with her for 'triage' because it was "easier for the doctors" to look at her somewhere other than an exam room, which would allow me to be with her (I am scared, the cat is scared...but let's make it 'easier' for the doctors). After a period of time I was able to speak with the doctor (Caleb Kemnitz), my cat was elsewhere. He explained that her gums were white, and she was somewhat dehydrated. He wanted to run some bloodwork, which of course I agreed to. He said that it would be an hour or 2 before the results were back and suggested grabbing a bite or shopping. Being that I lived almost 50 miles away, I went into downtown, gone close to 2 hours. When I returned there was no one in the waiting area. Nobody behind the reception desk said a word. After about 1/2 hour I asked if there was any word. The woman said, "have they called you?", no, they had not, "they will call you when they're done". No checking on the status, just the snappy little remark. Finally Dr. Kemnitz came out and took me into an exam room to discuss the results (I still have not seen my cat). He said that most of her labs were fine however her red blood cell count was at 9 (normal is 35-50), which is severely anemic and that she was not producing new cells. Among a few other possibilities for the severely low count, he said it could be FIV (feline Aids) or FeLV (feline leukemia), yet he did not test for either. He said that in order to test any further she would need a blood transfusion just to get her in a place to be able to test. She would need to be in the hospital for 2-7 days for the testing. There was no way I could afford this, he told me that he believed that even if I was a trillionaire the results would be the same. He "strongly" recommended euthanasia, even after telling me she was not in pain or suffering! He then left the room only saying that was going to go finish his notes. After sitting in the room for another 1/2 hour, I finally went to the desk and asked if he was coming back. The answer, "no, come pay the remainder of your bill and we will get your cat" (they were holding her hostage???)! I said I had a few more questions for the doctor and would like to speak with him again. Finally some other person I had never seen brought her out. When I asked him my questions, he said "I don't know", he didn't offer to get the doctor or find out. I was so angry I stormed out. The following day (Monday) I called to get the medical records to give to my regular vet. I was told it takes 2-3 days for them to be completed! I called the following day (Tuesday) to ask again, they finally sent them to me. I forwarded the records to my vet. After my vet reviewed the results, she had a different opinion about the lab work results. She said that Yoda was producing the blood cells and thought it may just be an infection. She put Yoda on Doxycycline and Prednisolone and told me to come in the next day (Wednesday). I was there as soon as they opened. She examined Yoda and said other than the white gums and lethargy, she seemed ok. To be sure she ran the FIV and FeLV tests to rule them out (both were negative). She said to come back on Saturday to run her blood to see if there was any improvement on the meds. I took Yoda in Saturday morning. The Vet Tech came out and sat down and said that she had read Yoda's records from UC Davis and could not believe what she was reading, what in the world was this 'doctor' thinking!?!?! She took Yoda back, drew her blood then brought her back to me. About 15 mins later my vet came out and said her count was 40, normal!!! Yoda is fine, she is eating and her normal happy self. I don't know if Dr. Caleb Kemnitz is incompetent, lazy or just doesn't care (or maybe all 3), but 6 days earlier he was "strongly" recommending to euthanize my Yoda when all she had was a treatable infection!!! Absolute malpractice!! I cannot help but wonder how many other beloved pets were murdered unnecessarily because of this man!!! I am filing a complaint with the head of the UC Davis Veterinary program as well as filing a complaint and asking for an investigation with the Veterinary Medical Board!

I love UC Davis Veterinary Teaching Hospital. I've brought two of my dogs in the last couple of years and even though the drive is long and a long waiting list on certain non urgent conditions , I would do it all over again if I have to. Sadly you can't trust all local veterinary clinics nowadays. But with UC Davis I gain a peace of mind that all involved in the teaching hospital have a passion for what they are doing and it's not just on profit.

    Very clean examining room

First class customer service for my wife, Minnie, & I. The staff from top to bottom was nothing short of perfect. Highly recommended for anyone who needs a great place to bring their family pet.

They insisted it was drop off only so I had to leave him to get examined. Hours later I get a call that he wouldn't let them get near him, then proceeded to THREATEN to call animal control if he bit someone. That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard. I warned them and tried to get them to let me stay with him but they didn't listen, then have the nerve to threaten my baby like that??? Unacceptable and ridiculous. They rightfully refunded me and offered to reschedule, so at least they did that right, but I was obviously not going back after that. I thought I would give them another shot and call for a ballpark estimate on a service, but this is the only vet that wouldn't provide a broad range unless I took my cat in and paid the $90 exam fee. Every other vet provided me a range despite my cat never being seen, but this place is just a joke. I wouldn't trust them to care for any of my babies after the first incident, so I'm not sure why I even considered giving them another chance. Plus, their services are too overpriced. We got quoted $1,000+ for a spay surgery, went to the SPCA instead and only paid $40 for the same exact procedure with follow ups at no cost for complications. If you want a good and honest vet that will provide excellent care, then save your time and money and go to Woodland Pet Hospital instead. Never coming back here ever again.

In December, my sweet 7-year-old Golden, Addie, was diagnosed with severe pulmonary edema by her primary vet. This hit us out of nowhere because, despite being so sick, she, being the sweet girl that she was, was still doing everything she could to please us and love on us. Even though it was Christmas time and they were very busy, we were able to schedule an appointment with Marqueen for the next day (Christmas Eve) to see if we could pull some of the fluid off and make things easier for her. We were hoping to have some time. During her initial exam, she was all loves and tail wags for the tech and the vet. She didn't act like she was super ill. Typical Addie. She only wanted to love on her new friends. Dr. McDonald pulled her back for a scan and a more thorough check. When she brought her back in, by the look on her face, I just knew. She had to give me the news that Addie was decompensating and was in the process of dying. We likely had hours. Despite her tail wags and eager disposition, her body was giving out on her. We discussed our options, and we decided together to let her go peacefully before she really started to struggle. Dr. McDonald and the Marqueen team allowed me to go home quickly to get our other dog, my husband, and our daughter so everyone could say goodbye. They watched over her while I was gone. Upon our return, they allowed us all the time we needed to love on her just as she had loved on us for seven years. When it was time, I laid down on the floor, big-spooned my sweet girl, and told her how much we loved her. I thanked her for being the amazing girl that she was. Dr. McDonald walked us through the entire process. She had a calm voice and was so soothing to us, and to Addie. We were allowed to spend as much time as we needed with her after she passed. Not once did we feel rushed. We were even able to bring our other dog in to say goodbye. While it was an absolutely devastating time, I can't say enough about the compassion that the Marqueen staff provided to us that day. I was able to leave knowing we made the best decision for our Addie girl, and that her passing was as smooth and peaceful as we could provide. Thank you, Dr. McDonald. I hope you see this, because I have thought of you so much since that day and truly appreciate how warm and kind you were. Thank you for being so... human. Waiting too long and trying extending their life can be a terrible, tragic, and unnerving mistake.... a mistake that I have made twice in the past. Trying to hang on past their due date was not good for me or my amazing animals. The front desk was managed by Tyler... I could feel his compassion as soon as I had finished the first sentence that I spoke to him. I had a very short wait time after I called . Tyler said "that I could come in anytime" and to "give them a 30 minute notice so that they could prepare a room for me." Tyler knew who I was the moment I walked in and immediately escorted me to a large, comfortable, private room where I loved my "puppy" goodbye. (If you must do this, I suggest staying with your beloved pet through the entire process. The hurt you feel at that time will not be as great as the guilt that you will feel if you hand your baby off and just walk away.) But, I question the financial ethics of this establishment. Also, because I'm here, I will mention that the receptionist was cold and rude. I thought I was just being sensitive but my partner independently commented on it later. I came out sobbing and she shoved some papers at me and walked away. In that stack of papers was a DRN. I really hope most pet parents get some kind of warning or verbal preparation that they are about to have to sign an invoice and also make a decision about whether their pet gets resuscitated or not. That was truly foul. Now, I understand ER vet care is costly. I understand that it is not the fault of the staff that systemically there is a problem with the price of vet care. But, if you participate in the practice of upcharging people in their most vulnerable moments then you are behaving unethically. I am now in more than $5,000 worth of debt from one visit. My dog needed fluids and antibiotics. So, yep, I went from just having gotten out from under credit card debt through debt consolidation and hard work to a crushing 5K worth of debt in one day. Because she needed intravenous fluids and broad spectrum antibiotics. That's all she needed. In the moment I said yes to every single thing on the invoice they presented me with. But, now, that my dog is not potentially dying from dehydration/vomiting in front of me, I can confidently say not all of those interventions were needed. They could have started with fluids and antibiotics and went from there. I already had labs, an ultra-sound and health data on her status from my regular vet from that day. But, we had to re-do all of that. Did we though? Was it necessary? I don't believe so. I was told my bill would be from 12-20k if she needed surgery. If that had been the case I would not have been able to pay for it. Our pets are going to die because the cost of vet care has gotten so out of hand. These prices are predatory.

The took him back and said his lymph nodes were enlarged and the mass in his chest was concerning (that's what was tested by the other vet). They told us that taking him in for 49-72 hr observation plus the tests that they would recommend would be around $5500. But, they advised they would do the exact same tests the other vet did a few days earlier and it would still take some time to get the results. Nevertheless, we weighed our options and only paid for the consultation & they obliged it was likely the best call and supported our decision. The pup actually ate some food and drank some water while we were there so it was a welcomed surprise. A few days later on the 5th our vet gave us the diagnosis of lymphoma which crushed us...however, without getting some reinforcement on our decisions from the VCA we would have been pretty bad off tbh. We appreciate their honesty and assistance. The doggy is still with us but he is slowing down so it will be time eventually. Hug your animals folks!

They sent over anything I requested and helped where they could. Receptionists at other establishments I called sometimes answered the phone (or my questions) with attitude or genuine disinterest. The costs for imaging, oxygen chamber and the like were very high, but that's not this establishment's fault. They did what they had to do to determine the issue and bring her to a stable place. Unfortunately health care for ALL animal species is just high in general. While Freya's not out of the woods yet (her surgery is actually today) she is where she is because of the efficiency of VSH Roseville, their honest opinions and their care they showed her. I wanted to shout out to the staff who took care of Freya. I did not get all their names as they're on a constant rotation, but If they are reading this, please know from the bottom of my heart I am so grateful for all the work and care you took to make sure my kitten was okay. I can tell each of one of you are loving pet parents by the way I was treated and taken care of. I won't hesitate to recommend this place, or return when I need something.

If you want expert pet care and absolutely abysmal lack of awareness, look no further…read more The care is first rate, though pricey, but not any pricier than any other vet. Where I found them horrible is in their attitude. When my 18 year-old cat was dying I wanted him euthanized. I couldn't tell if he were suffering. At first they wanted to schedule me for two days later (WTF?). Then when they told me the price, I told them I could pay more than half, but I'd have to pay the balance *four* days later. The phone receptionist went into "All fees must be paid at the time of service" robot mode. She suggested I start calling around to see if someone else could help me. I don't know if it was the same woman, but one time before the lady answering the phone was kind of snippy. Some people shouldn't be allowed to be on the phone with human beings. My cat? A few hours later he died *writhing* in my arms. I will never, ever, ever forgive them for that. They made a really bad day into the most horrible day in my life--all because they wouldn't wait a couple of days for 60 bucks. I might point out that I had paid them more than $800 over the previous year and a half with no trouble, but suddenly they were treating me like a panhandler out of the gutter. They are good at cat medicine, but absolutely rubbish at dealing with people.. These guys completely blew it. Keep looking.
