I've had an amazing experience the times I've been to Petco! The groomer Ruth has been amazing to my Husky German Shepard! There was a gap between me taking her to the groomers and Ruth has been so helpful and patient with getting my doggy back in routine of going to the groomers and I couldn't be happier with the results everytime! Everyone compliments her on her fluffy, soft, and clean coat and I have to thank Ruth for that! I also am always grateful for the help around the store I get when I'm looking for products that best fit my doggy so I've truly had nothing but great experiences here. Do not take your pets here for grooming. I had the worst nightmare ever. They cut her during grooming and called me to meet them at urgent pet care. She needed two staples and was in pain, plus she looks like a drowned rat. She's a 4.5 pound Maltese! The grooming manager paid for her hospital bills, but I'm still very upset. They offered to finish her grooming when she heals. I don't think so!!! Never letting them take scissors near her. Unbelievable! Should receive negative stars. Sussane, long gray hair and glasses, apparently the store manager (how she's a manager, I don't know) advised me to feed my dogs herbs to help with digestion only for me to research and find out that dogs cannot have. I'm all for natural ways for healing but when you deliberately attempt to harm my pet with misinformation and your uneducated "homeopathic" practices..the issue becomes a bigger problem. There has to be policies in place to avoid this type of ignorance! She needs to be replaced with someone who knows what they are doing and actually cares about our animals! I went to Petco to get new fish for my 8 year old's tank. Susanne helped us and she was so very kind to my son...patient, thoughtful, knowledgeable. I understand chain pet stores are all pretty similar but this petco is differentiated 100% by the staff. They're so caring & knowledgeable about dogs. I literally spent 30 min chatting with the angel from blue Buffalo (Suzanne). The associate at the grooming center (I can't remember her name eek) was also so helpful in explaining to us how to approach trimming our puppies nails. Thankful for this local staff! read more

This is the third time I've taken my dog there. She is a medium size well trained springer spaniel. I usually don't write negative reviews and I understand sometimes we all have a bad day. But this is the second time I've had a bad experience there and I won't go back. I tipped very well and I'm very respectful and considerate of the people working hard for their money just as I do. They are unfriendly and unprofessional. I was there with my 9 & 12-year-old children and the girl told me that I need to take my dog and put her on trazodone at a private vet before I have her haircut again. The other lady at the cash register sat there with a complete frown and unwelcoming demeanor. I would not recommend this place and the people are very rude and I will not spend my money there and not even get a thank you or smile after leaving them a $20 tip on top of a $80 bill. read more

There is a reason for all of the bad reviews on this store. My review is for grooming. These people do not care about your dog or you or anything else, really. They hate being there and want to get it done as fast as possible without thought or quality or care. This is the assembly line of grooming and as soon as I entered the store and felt the walking dead vibe in there, I should have run away. I tried to give the benefit of the doubt, but my first opinion was correct. It was a hatchet job. First time, shame on them, second time....there most certainly won't be one. I was on a short time frame so went with Petco against my better judgment and it cost a fortune and my dog looked sad and so was I. Go to a real groomer - not the big box store type which will give you the nightmare I just outlined. Even if it is a bit of a wait, go to the small, individual groomers who actually care about dogs and you and take pride in their work. There is a wait for a reason. read more

I made a grooming appointment a month ago for my beagle. When I showed up today, they refused to provide services ( a basic bath, mind you) because my dog is on Fluoxetine, and they needed a letter from the vet telling them that it was ok to bathe her. Nobody contacted me from Petco ahead of time to let me know I needed this letter--a total waste of my time. This was not our first appointment with them either. I will not be coming back. I come here often to pick up crickets for my daughter's lizards. I have to give props to the employees there for even touching the crickets... lol. That's one thing I would not want to do at all. There was one employee who had shaky hands the whole time she was putting the crickets in a bag. I believe she was new and I can tell by the look on her face that she did not want to do this. lol. Anyway, the store is always well kept. The staff will sometimes acknowledge me and say hello. My kids love looking at all the animals... especially the kittens, when they have them. We've gotten advice about creating a lizard habitat at home and the guy was very knowledgeable, friendly and suggested a cheaper route which saved me about $60 of unnecessary expenses. Well, if my dog likes this place, then I should, right? Well....everytime I go in for a grooming for my dog, it usually goes quite well and quickly. Finding something on the shelves is not as easy. I had purchased mini-Milk Bone biscuits ("cookies" to my dog) at another large national chain over by Citadel Mall and thought that I needed some more. Wandering around this week in the store trying to figure out the layout lead to my conclusion that it was not the easiest place to find things. No one on the main floor to ask. Oh, well. So, kudos for the grooming (albeit a bit rich for my blood and pocket) but finding dog biscuits might be helped with visible signage, or something to help a shopper, eh? read more

This Petco location in West Ashley is awesome and has all of the pet related products you could possibly need. I like how the store is organized so you can find everything really easy and go right to it. The location is convenient to get in and out of and always has plenty of parking next to the store. The prices are good for all of the products they carry and everyone at the store is very friendly and helpful in making sure you get everything for your pet. This is one of my favorite pet related stores in the Charleston area and I find myself in here a lot. I am much happier after a visit to Petco. read more

The groomers love taking care of pets. My dog has bad skin issues and hates having his nails trimmed. No problem for these groomers. They know Cookie by name and handle him with special care. They will make space for him when I drop in for a nail trim. The store keeps a good selection of food and pet toys. They hold Vetco clinics for vaccinations as well which is inexpensive and convenient. The store is super clean and parking is a breeze. And if you ever need to boost your mood and laugh, check out the ferrets. They are hilarious. read more

This is a nice alternative to other chain pet supply stores. Unfortunately, many times I don't find the items for which I am looking to purchase. They address the needs of all types of pets and have many available for adoption. They offer dog training sessions and grooming by appointment. Staff are friendly and helpful, but not over-bearing. There always seems to be pallets of items throughout the store for restocking. Rarely are they out of items that they routinely carry. This location is very convenient. The shopping centre has a grocery store, department stores, massage parlor, nail salon, etc. Plenty of parking out front anytime of the day or evening. read more

I took my dog for a haircut and the groomer refused to listen to me regarding what kind haircut I wanted, they were rude and unprofessional . I tried explain what kind of cut I wanted and they kept on saying No. They gave a $60.00 quote and charged $80.00. I requested don't cut the hair on his tail, they cut it anyway. I gave them an honest survey and the wrote back in a text messages stating all these lies. That my dog was neglected and he had to be shaved and that I snapped my fingers and treated the staff like dogs !!! I was disrespectful because I questioned their opinions . Basically, the costumer has no say at Petco, they make up stories and lie to cover themselve when a costumer complains about a horrible job The staff is rude and not costumer friendly I highly recommend you go somewhere else. This Petco was the only one that had gorgeous betta fish options. Highly recommend. deducted a star because the cashier lady gave me a face/ attitude for wanting to see if she could break $100. Then when I asked to pay half on card half in cash instead, she didn't know how to do it so she went to the safe to break the $100. Just say no if you can't. Anyway, I've had absolutely terrible experiences with the grooming section, so if you are reading this because your lil pup needs a haircut, you are better off not even bothering. They messed my dog's haircut up (she is a fluffy, fluffy dog, so this is actually possible!), leaving her smelling like a crossover between a cheap hooker and a Claire's Store middle school shoplifter (I imagine they smell like incredibly synthetic cherry-- the glitter roll on kind maybe? Is this just me?), annnnnd, my dog seems to have disliked however they handled her, as she just sulked for a good while after the fact (something that doesn't happen at other places or when I do it myself) BUT--- if you are going here for classes with Aimee, go for it. She is awesome and very helpful. Saatchi is basically the most well behaved dog now and I picked up a few good tips on how to work with her. (the dog, not the trainer?) Also, if you are going to buy supplies here, its much more affordable, although lacking in terms of quality compared to some other local stores. Long story short, if you are in a rush and/or need to pick up supplies (orrr maybe a hilaaarious dog Christmas sweater?? IDK IDK IDK) on the cheap, head here. I've only been here once, but my wife is a regular. Situated between Harris Teeter and a toy store, it has everything you'd ever need for your pets, including more pets. We only spent about 10 minutes in there, at most, because my wife knew exactly what we needed, where to find it, and I did my best to avoid the live animals so that we didn't bring another one home (yet). Next time I come in I'll be sure to walk through the entire building and hope to have a reason to bump it up to five stars. read more

This is the main place i go for supplies for my dog because its close enough and they have almost everything i need. I buy my dog food from amazon because they dont carry it in store here, but all the treats and canned food is available here. I do hate that everytime im in the store, they seem to be restocking and there are pallets everywhere. I dont show up at off hours so, i wonder if they are constantly in this state or im just unlucky. generally prices here are in line with other pet stores and the variety is there without a doubt. I had a bad experience with the groomers at PetSmart, so I was very reluctant to try PetCo. Upon arriving, my dogs were greeted immediately....which is nice since they are the clients. They actually read the information card that I filled out about each dog. PetSmart did not do this when I had gone to them. Both of my dogs are lab mixes and they were going to get shaved one more time before the summer ended. PetCo did a wonderful job and my dogs looked great!! My dogs looked happy when I picked them up and I am definitely taking them back there. Thanks PetCo!! read more

I am happy to know that petco changed over to all grain free pet foods. This is great and I buy all cat litter there BUT...........they need to pay people more and offer benefits or something better. They cannot keep help and those that are there are often nasty, surly and lacking in knowledge. The people who know the most and are the most helpful and friendly are gone in no time, I am sure to a better paying job. Petco needs to step up and do better by their employees. They make a fortune and can afford to pay people a living wage and not raise prices to do it. read more

We took our labradoodle here three times: the first two times we had Jana, who did a pretty good job; the third time, we had Nicole, who did a terrible job. Despite what we requested, after we left, Nicole decided to shave our dog's entire body down to bare metal. When we picked her up, we were shocked. Even her tail was ruined. Nicole claimed our dog was very matted and she had no choice. However, no other groomer has ever had this issue. This was without even bathing our dog first. The dog looked so ridiculous, we took her back in to talk with the manager, who agreed it was a sloppy and unprofessional cut and gave us a full refund. Even though we got a refund, we won't go back here. Would not recommend. read more

To start, I have to say I have always been a petco person and have trusted them to do all of our animals for nail appointments. The West Ashley location is okay, I have not had any problems there other than a smattering of rude employees, but hey I'd probably be grumpy after a full day too. The positive history is the only reason this is getting 2 stars. However, I will no longer be taking my dog here for any thing. I have always utilized the drop in nail trim/buffing service as it is super convenient and fast. My dog is pretty calm and has not had a problem. First issue I found was a couple weeks ago I came in to get her nails done and there was a sign on the grooming desk that they are taking appointments only. When I asked about it I was rudely asked if I could "read the sign", and I left. Went online to make an appointment to find that you cannot select a nails - only service. So I called, was again rudely told to make an appointment online, to which I had to describe my dilemma. Appointments were then made for my dog and my mothers the following day. My mom took her dog there first, before grabbing mine as I was at work. Her pup is a rescue, and was a victim of abuse, as well as has ticklish feet. He is the SWEETEST dog though, and has never met a stranger, and never had an issue getting his nails done. 10 minutes later her dog was returned saying they could not finish because he wouldn't behave and his toe was bleeding all over the floor from the quick being cut all the way through. When my mother addressed it the groomer said "huh, maybe that's why he was squirming" and advised her to "put some flour on it if it doesn't stop bleeding". NO APOLOGY. If you are short on staff, or have unqualified people, fess up and let us know. There is zero excuse for letting someone who cannot handle an animal be in grooming. My mom did not go to get my dog, and made appointments at the vet to their nails done where the vet advised she would likely have to begin tranquilizing her dog to get his nails done. read more

I have two dogs, one with an anxiety disorder so she has medication specifically prescribed for vet visits and grooming. I made an appointment for her to be fully groomed (her first grooming at Petco) and my other dog to have his nails buffed. I loaded my two babies (two under two years old) and two dogs in the car. When I got to the store, I was told that they do not groom dogs on anxiety medication. You would think that if it's a dog's first grooming they could have mentioned that over the phone, or had me read terms for grooming at Petco stating such before scheduling. The visit was a complete waste of time, effort, and energy. I couldn't be more annoyed with Petco. This is not my first negative experience with Petco. I'm sure to make it my last. I will no longer be a customer of this store. read more

I recently bought two female mice from here. One of them had died THE NEXT DAY!! I went back and received another one for free. Now, two weeks later and the other original one had died as well. I take excellent care of my pets. I suspect the second had an upper respiratory infection- no doubt due to the overcrowded conditions in their cages at the store. I know mice have a short life span, but COME ON! I will never purchase animals from Petco again. read more

Went in there once and will never return. They had a bearded dragon on the sales floor who still had stitches from a tail amputation. No pain meds or antibiotics, unacceptable. Secondly, they had at least 6 leopard geckos in one cage varying between 3-7 inches which any reptile owner knows that they are very territorial and will bite off toes and tails. Finally, there were 2 ball pythons housed together where one was at least twice the size of the other and the smaller one was so dehydrated his skin was shriveled up. read more
