So I live walking distance from this Petco and occasionally make my way over here to drift through their items. I don't go here often or regularly because they are very expensive. Compared to Amazon (with free Prime shipping to Alaska), this Petco's pet supplies are about twice as expensive (eek!). But, sometimes you just need to have a 'shopping day out with the animals' and this is where I choose to go. They also have a wide array of pet food, in case my Amazon order isn't delivered by the time I run out. They're also one of the few places in Anchorage to carry fresh and frozen foods as well as live insects (for reptile food). There is one specific girl in this Petco that has 100% earned my respect as an employee. I would have originally rated this Petco 3 stars, but because of this girl's loyalty to animal care- I upped it a star. I don't know what her name is, but I originally met her in July and she was working in the reptile section. By late August she'd been promoted to manager of the animal care department (or something similar). She's fairly young, but truly LOVES the animals there and ensures their habitats are clean, the animals are well-taken care of, and also ensures the animals are handled with care so they don't become skittish or fearful of human hands. A few other employees in the store seem equally as enthusiastic about animal care, but a couple just seem to mope around and not do much (which is always off-putting to me when I walk into a department store). This Petco does carry live animals including a very good selection of reptiles, rodents, and birds. They also carry fish- but their aquariums, in particular, are not in the best shape. There are often dead fish in the water with the live fish. The lighting is broken on a few of the aquariums. Some are over-crowded and others are not cleaned. The aquatics section isn't up to par, and that did downgrade this store a star. Also- their hermit crabs have painted shells which have been scientifically proven to be harmful to the mental and physical health of hermit crabs (shame on Petco for continuing to sell hermit crabs in this condition!). With that being said, the other reptiles, rodents, and birds are kept in fantastic condition. Their cages are clean and well-maintained and all of the animals are typically very active and healthy in appearance. The store is well-organized and kept fairly clean. Everything is divided by species which makes it relatively easy to find what you need. They have the best selection of organic grain-free cat and dog foods that I've found in Anchorage. The dog-training specialists are very professional and well-informed. I brought my boyfriend's rescue pit bull in here about a month ago when I was pet-sitting her. She's a very hyper dog who pulls on the leash when being walked and also 'begs' for attention from other dogs and kids by barking ferociously at them (she's not aggressive, she just wants them to come play- but people don't realize that). Anyways, when the employees here saw me wrestling this hyper pit bull they came over and offered a lot of advice. They showed me a training leash and techniques that I could use to keep her from pulling and also did a mini 'free session' to show me how to deter her 'come play with me barks'. They took the time out of their day to do this entirely for free. I was extremely impressed. Anyways, this Petco has its good and bad parts. They truly do have employees that care, but the aquatic sections needs some extra special attention to get up to standards. The hermit crabs shouldn't be in painted shells, but the rest of the animals are well taken care of. They have a great selection, but are a bit over-priced. Overall, though, it's worth stopping in just to talk with the very knowledgeable and professional employees- and find a few fun pet items to spoil your furry, feathery, or scaly friend with. read more

I'm sharing this because I wish I had trusted my instincts sooner. About a year ago, I took my dog to the Mountain View location of Petco in Anchorage for a nail trim. When I picked him up, something felt off. I couldn't pinpoint exactly what had happened, but his behavior was clearly different. Since that visit, he will not let anyone touch his front paws or trim his nails. Before this appointment, he was completely fine with nail handling--I was able to trim them at home without any issues. This change was immediate and has been ongoing ever since. For context, I had previously taken him to the south Anchorage Petco, and he had a completely normal experience there. No fear, no resistance afterward. That's why this shift stood out so strongly. I can't say exactly what occurred during that appointment, but the lasting impact on my dog has been significant. It's been really difficult to work through this fear with him, and it's honestly heartbreaking to see. If you have a sensitive or anxious dog, I would strongly encourage you to ask detailed questions about handling practices and consider how your pet might respond to that environment. read more

Chrissi S does an awesome job of grooming Jake. He comes out with a super glossy soft coat, excellent trim of paws, nails, and sometimes a "sanitary" trim to keep snowballs off his belly. Jake loves visiting Chrissi and has done so many times now. She is professional and consistent. read more

Just came in here for a return and hopefully exchange but they didn't have the item I wanted in stock. Will was so incredibly helpful calling other locations asking to see if they had it in stock and if they'd call if they got it in stock. When the other stores didn't have it he made sure to go look several other places it could've been tucked away at. I normally shop at the Old Seward location because it's closer to my house but after my experience in this location I will be in the location more. The fish area seemed clean and well kept. The whole store was pretty clean and seemed to have a pretty good stock other than the limited edition item I was looking for. read more

Like marijuana, they say, is a gateway drug, so too are Betta fish a gateway fish to owning a "real" aquarium. After watching the secretaries in our office kill off several Bettas by using them as ornaments in vases, I began to study these fish. Being a Pisces myself, I thought it sort of sacrilegious that someone could put a fish in a tiny container and think it was happy. And they all said, "It LIKES being in a small container!" I did my research and found they DON'T like being in vases. I took the kids to Petco and my son picked out a gorgeous crown tail from a HUGE selection of all shapes and colors of Bettas. They had tons of fish plants, real and plastic and ones that seemed real. Lots of castles and pillars and aquarium toys...gravel, food, medicine, water conditioner...everything. And the price was cheaper than the place I checked out in the valley earlier (bought a Betta there too, but that's another review). The only downside was not a lot help at the register. Why is it that every time I have ever gone to a Petco anywhere, there is a long line at the register, a million agents on the floor, but only one register open? Why is that? We've been coming here for quite a bit now and they've always done a nice job with our little guy. Lately when I call, I get put on hold for 5 to 10 minutes. By the time someone answers, I have to explain everything all over again....or the line is open and I can hear everything in the background. It turns out they have groomers and bathers answering phones. Isn't that what a dedicated receptionist is for? So when I addressed this concern to a supposed "manager" her excuse was that the groomer has to stop bathing the dog and put them in a kennel just to answer my call? Well I'm sorry if I'm trying to give you my business. If I am such a burden on your employee then I should take my money elsewhere. HOW ABOUT YOU HIRE A RECEPTIONIST AND TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR GROOMING STAFF. I'll make it easier for you, you don't have to worry about this patron anymore. One less dog for you to worry about. How can you expect a groomer to work well when they also have to worry about answering phones and greeting people at the counter? This is very unorganized, unprofessional, and you're burning out your staff....oh and making your customer feel like they are inconveniencing you by wanting to call to make an appointment. Groomers shouldn't have to be worrying about washing a dog and then answering a phone....what kind of business is this!? You're a big chain for Pete's sake.. stop being cheap and hire some people! This location is in desperate need of renovation and I much prefer the Dimond Petco. Beware of store associate Alex and this store manager..I really wish chewy delivered out here so I wouldn't have to deal with these incompetent store associates and there disregard for customer service. When I placed an order online earlier this month the order was supposed to be filled within 2 hours but upon arrival around 7:15pm the order was not filled when Alex picked up the store phone. This order was placed before 5pm.. Not only did she not fill the order but when she did instead of swapping out the order for another item so I don't have to pay twice and wait for my bank to give me my money back she canceled the order. Than the no good store manager was no help either. Furthermore this store never has pumpkin purée and is always in shambles. I highly do not recommmend using Petco! I have been getting my elder dog groomed here for years. He, like many dogs, gets very nervous when they are clipping his nails. Petco has been aware of this and were the people whom brought it to my attention. Apparently nervousness equates to aggression with Petco...which is totally absurd. When making the appointment, not only did Petco confirm my information - confirmed my dog by name - and looked at his records, but when I show up, they tell me they cannot take him because he's aggressive. He is not aggressive. He, like many dogs, do not like the clipping of his nails. These are supposedly professionals - so I'm fairly certain their training should include methods to clip nails of nervous elder dogs. At the very minimum, they should have called me to let me to know this. They call twice to confirm an appointment that they then decide at the time of the appointment to not allow my dog to be groomed. Don't waste your time with Petco. Support local groomers who are experienced, professional, and not "Jr Groomers." Highly do not recommend Petco. If I could have given them zero stars...I would. Their customer service and professionalism is sub-par and an embarrassment. Waste of time! read more

Really poor customer service I was given untrue information about the manager's inability to look up a store receipt. My thirteen year old purchased a fish which died less than 24 hours after purchase. They refused to refund the purchase even after printing the receipt. Said my 13 year old should have held on to her original receipt. Suggested she should have read the fine print on the bag. Then admitted they have a policy against selling to children, but still, with a copy of the receipt in hand refused to refund or replace my little girl's fish. Over time I have found their fish to be unhealthy, mislabeled and as much as 50% over priced. I will drive the extra mile or two to a better retailer. Don't waste your time with them. read more

I am very upset about my recent encounter with Petco Grooming. On my last visit they let me know they had trouble finishing my dogs haircut because she was favoring her back leg. Not a problem. That happens. I brought her in for a boat band haircut today and they said they would not groom her and that they told me they would no longer be able to give her a haircut because she was too old and needed support to groom. They never told me that the last visit. The women insisted they did. I let her know I would not waste my time bringing her in if they had told me that and her insistence did not make her right in denying services. Does Petco think older dogs aren't good enough to be groomed? I will not recommend them or go to Petco again. I have booked her at Bev's Grooming, they gladly accept dogs of all ages, they do not discriminate. read more

Two of the times I have been here with my husky it was great! My dog went willingly with the groomer and seemed happy. The last time I took her my sister picked my pup up. She gave me some distressing information about the way my dog was being treated when she showed up to pick her up. The groomers didn't recognize my sister. She told me that, once they realized she was there for my dog, they treated her better. I tried to brush it off and chalk it up to them being busy. Fast forward to today, after waiting almost a month for an appointment...I show up and they are only letting one family in at a time. No big deal. We patiently wait. Once we get inside, the employee takes her sweet time getting us checked in. Also, no big deal. When she came around to check over my pup for injuries, my dog started freaking out. She was whining and yipping and trying to get away. Even clawing at the door. This same employee, Chloe, had given me attitude once before, and was described by my sister from the last time she picked up my dog. My dog loves everyone. Never runs from anyone. And I have never seen her act like that before. Granted, Chloe was not being mean to my dog or anything today. But, the fact that my dog freaked out so much only after she saw her, added to what my sister told me from her experience, makes me think that maybe they aren't as nice to the animals when the owner isn't around. Last year after my husbands dog Buddy of 13 years had to be put down, our girls were devastated. We contacted some breeders and everyone we found had a long waiting list. Seeing the girls so hurt was heart breaking because they had grown up with him since they were babies and even before, Kinsley our youngest was born. He had been in their lives even longer then me, it killed me seeing them so depressed, so I talked to my husband about getting something small like a gerbil or a hamster to help with their loss until we got a puppy down the road-keeping both of course. He agreed since some of the waiting list could have been years. Since our local pet store in Eagle River didn't have any live pets, like hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, yet alone fish-other then gold fish. We had to go to Anchorage, the next closest pet store was in the Tikatanu area. When we went in our youngest, Kinsley was absolutely fascinated by the Guinea pigs but they were all hidden and hard to see. We wanted an employee to help us but we could not find any help anywhere. Once we tracked someone down, we were told in an off-putting tone that someone would be right with us, after another 15 minutes passed we decided to leave and try this Petco, a little further into town. As soon as we walked in were were greeted. We checked out the rodents and once again Kinsley was fascinated by the Guinea pigs who were hiding in their little igloo like homes. An employee came right up and asked us if we had any questions. We told her we would like to see the guinea pigs. She happily made the guinea pigs viewable and talked to us a few minutes about Guinea pigs, snacks they like, how long they live and so on. She was so helpful and polite. We let her we were going to look around some more. She told us where to find her if we had any more questions or needed any help. We did some looking around. My oldest step daughter, Emma wanted nothing to do with the rodents and convinced us to check out the birds. There was one bird in particular that caught her eye. She wanted to ask an employee some questions about it. Walking past us was an employee, she stopped him to asked him her questions. He nicely told us he didn't know much about birds but that he would get us the "bird lady." Well the bird lady came... sooner or later. She was really grumpy and acted like we were inconveniencing her, wow she ACTUALLY had to do the job, that she was there to do. Me and Daniel looked at each other in awe of this women's behavior. It hurt our daughters feeling so bad, she then left and took off to the car the women was being so mean. I told the lady we no longer needed her help and thanked (for god only knows what) and went to go talk with Emma while my husband and our youngest continued to look around. Once I convinced her to come back in she looked around some more with us but was completely turned off of the birds because of this women. Kinsley ended up settling on a guinea pig. The first gal who helped us come over and happily got us the paperwork we needed to fill and on our way to bring home our needed member of the family. Both girls ended up falling head over heels in love with this sweet little guinea pig. Emma was still set on getting a bird though. She had some money saved up, she did some research. She put aside the money for a cage and accessories and budgeted the costs for a bird. But she refused to go back to this Petco for assistance after the "bird-lady" treated us so awful. It was her purchase and we respected her wishes, we ended up finding another pet store, the employee there was more then HAPPY to help her. Since, all this we now have a zoo at our house, with a new addition to our family, Zeke, a super friendly Labradoodle. We have even made this Petco our favorite pet store to go for Zeke's needs. We brought him in after first getting him, the staff who assisted us was extremely knowledgeable with dogs/puppies and you could tell she really cared. We also found that this Petco is much cheaper and have better deals then our pet store in Eagle River. Amanda B did a fabulous job grooming our Samoyed. It's really hard to find someone who knows how to groom, thin the coat but not damage their coat with its two layers: outer course and a baby fine thick coat underneath. She was most patient with him, as he required breaks due to sore back knees. Afterward when he happened to see her later, he marched right up and gave her lots of kisses. The groomers in this place are horrible with customer service. I have taken my German Shepherd here multiple times, and every time we drop her off 10-15 min and get her back in a few hours, the first couple times were great but lately it has been declining. Today was the last time, I went for an 11:30 appointment and showed up at 11:20 as I had stuff I needed to get done, the girl there playing with dogs told me I would have to wait until the groomer showed up to leave my pup. When I asked her why this was different than all the other times I have been here, she just told me to wait until the groomer gets there and that she is scheduled to be there at 11:30...so much for getting your work ready for the day and for helping out a coworker before she shows up by simply checking in a dog. We did puppy training here with John last fall and he was amazing. I've recommended all my friends with puppies to go there. When they're out of bulk product they let you buy smaller ones that equal the bulk amount for the bulk pay which is really nice. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable. I'm baseing this review off of one visit that I believe needs recognition and not my overall or other visits. In this particular scenario, the light for my fish tank had gone out. Because of my busy schedule it took me a few days to get into petco to buy a replacement. Once I did and returned home I was disappointed to find it had the same dim glow my burned out bulb had. A few days later my husband exchanged it for me, only to have the same thing happen! At this time I'm getting fairly frusterated. We took the latest bulb, box, reciept and my tank hood up to petco. I wish I had gotten supervisors name, but this lovely associate tested out several bulbs and my hood. Turns out several of their bulbs were messed up, my hood worked fine, but she gave me a working bulb and a new hood "for my troubles". Mine was getting pretty old, so this made up the trouble to me! I really appreciate this employee going out of her way to find the problem, and make it better. Thank you! read more

The store itself is nice on the inside but customers are letting their dogs poop in the parking lot and on the center medians with the trees and mulch and it is gross! There is a pet store right there people. You can buy poop bags and clean it up or the store should provide bags outside with a reminder to clean up after your dog! read more

I have had more than one poor experience with petco groomers & their manager, Trina. Apparently she is the only certified groomers right now, I've experienced a decline in the quality of service after my pets former groomer, Sarah, had left the store. First, we had scheduled our appointment for the beginning of January, it was difficult to get in because I work throughout the week and can only take my pup in on the weekends. So when we scheduled for the beginning of January my dog was already long overdue for a haircut which they explained was due to the fact that they only have one certified groomer (I don't understand why they don't hire more if this is a reoccurring issue). Then, this appointment was canceled without my request and the only way I was notified was by email- with no explanation as to why it was canceled on us. I thought ok no big deal I can call to reschedule, well the soonest they could get my pup in was 20 days out from the original date. I was never given any sort of apology for my initial appointment being canceled for no reason. All I was told by the manager was that she "couldn't tell me why", no apology. This is frustrating because seeing as she is the only certified groomer shouldn't she be aware of WHY HER APPOINTMENT on her schedule was canceled. So this brings us to my rescheduled appointment which was at 9:45am. I get to the store on time and approach the doors only to find the doors are locked, closed signs are on both the front door and the door of the grooming. So here I am extremely confused why they would schedule me when the store is CLOSED. I call the grooming and the phone rings and rings... no answer. Leaving me to believe that they are in fact closed. I left a unhappy voicemail and head back home. 20 minutes later I get a call from the manager explaining that they were open and the reason that the door wouldn't open was because they "simply forgot" to unlock the automatic doors. But she goes on to say that they were there and were open. However, they are booked up and cannot get me in for the same day. Again, I never received an apology for the first mistake that they made with canceling my appointment and now I never got an apology for their next mistake with my second appointment. What gets me is that I asked the manager why no one answered my call if they were there and she says that the other groomer was working with a dog and the manager who I was speaking with (Trina) was not in the store yet. SO Trina, the only certified groomer whom my appointment was scheduled with was not in the store at the time of my appointment and its MY FAULT?! This was absolutely unacceptable and what put me over the edge was that the manager never once apologized for their multitude of mistakes. Instead I was left feeling like it was my fault for leaving the store when the doors were locked and closed signs were up and no one answered my calls. I will never give my service to Trina at petco ever again. I will find a new groomer and/or wait until they hire a new certified groomer. I hope Trina gets replaced because she does not deserve to be a manager of the grooming with the way she treats her customers. I encourage all people looking for a groomer to go to Pet's Included instead. They have treated my dog great and work with me to get an appointment time that works for my schedule. read more

I can only put this as bluntly as possible. I am glad Petco is here in Alaska. I am not over enthused about their pets-for-sale programs, but to be fair I have seen the animals are well groomed, and taken care of in a good manner. The aquarium and fish area is very nice and extremely well stocked for any and all items that you would need, (including the frozen fish foods, bloodworms, brine shrimp) and tools of the trade (to coin a phrase) to keep an aquarium up and running, and the prices....which is my godsend, the PRICES are decent and fair. As most know, I rescue Great Danes, and sometimes my food bill can get OUTRAGEOUS!! I know it hurts my pockets, but I would do anything for my rescues, which includes feeding them Nutra products, which can and ARE expensive. I have learned to trust this product line though as it has helped many of my Danes in their recoveries. This is not to mention also, my best Buddy "Chopper", (pics on my photos). You see Chopper has many food allergies, so I have learned to depend upon the Nutra Products, that Petco carries, and the prices they charge are so far below the competition...all I can say is thank-you to them and ask you to use this store for your pets needs. They keep the prices up here down...they are A-#1 in my book. PLUS, I can take my Danes in when I shop and show them off....take stroll through...well worth it! read more
