Our experience with Ames Petco has been less than one star in the past 2 years we have gotten three animals and two of them have died the very recent one is a guinea pig we've only had for less than 2 months and he's lethargic and stopped eating? I apologize for how long this is.. My husband and I are looking to get a second conure for our family as we love them so much. We called around to different stores and found that this Ames Petco location had a few options. We live in Ankeny so of course we called first to get more info and make sure they were still available. When we arrived we looked at the birds first and then I went to find the pet specialist to help us. When she came over she Greeted us with "what's up" like we were bothering her. Annoying and unprofessional but we ignored that and inquired about the birds available. We then asked if we could hold the bird we were interested in and she said No it's against policy because of Covid... Really how dumb. I'm not going to pay over $800 for a bird if I can't hold it. She assumed we were just lookie lou's and really was just flat out roud. When we told her we want to buy a bird today but we're not gonna do that if we can't see if we have a connection and how we feel about it by holding it, she fired back with why didn't you start with that. Needless to say we did not buy a bird from the store. As we were walking out my husband said that he wanted to talk to the manager and inform her how rude the employees was. Young lady that works in the fish area is simply rude and unhelpful so I will never come back to get anything from them.

I'm shocked this big chain made its way to Ames but I'm happy it did. It's almost like a dog park minus the park. I think a lot of people go there with their dogs and window shop just for something to do, or maybe that's just me. Fair prices, great customer service, and oh my goodness they keep that store super clean, pristine, and beautifully decorated! I love coming here for my canine necessities! read more

I have been taking my dog, Radu, to this location since I moved to Ames (3 years ago). They are by far the kindest, friendliest and most personable group of people we've come across in a Petco. The grooming salon is top notch, and they have gone out of their way to accommodate my schedule, and Radu's needs. These employees clearly love the animals, and their jobs, which is refreshing. We are relocating to Des Moines, and we will miss our weekly visits! I can only hope the local Petco is just as friendly and professional. Unreliable. I have a reptile that requires live mice - not frozen; won't eat thawed mice. 1/3-1/2 the time I try to buy mice from Petco, they're out. Even though they specifically track male vs. female inventory when purchasing, they run out. Not sure why they bother tracking inventory if they're not going to maintain stock. Went Monday to get mice and they're out AGAIN and won't have any until Thursday. They're probably a good store if you have a dog or cat, but beware otherwise. read more

I know there can be a lot cynicism in regards to "big chains" or "cookie-cutter" stores coming into communities that thrive on local business. This may be true on some accounts, but I cannot be more grateful that Petco has opened up in the Ames area. There are so many positive attributes that this store has. I will just highlight a few things that stood out to me. One of the greatest aspects of Petco is their cleanliness. I cannot imagine how difficult keeping a place clean that sells, supplies, and hosts animals. They do it very well at this location. Everything is very organized and well laid out. They found some way to avoid that game-y, musty odor a lot of pet supply and animal hospitals usually have. (This last comment is not meant to offend any other location. I do know why, especially clinics, have that odor. It's simply a compliment on their attention to housekeeping.) They also are my number one stop for supplies just based the enormous selection. Their range is extensive. It spans species, brands, and food sub-selections. For the basic, anything works sort of pet owner, they have your standard brands of at a fair price. For the "my dog is an extension of myself, and means more to me than your child does to you" sort of pet-parent, they brand as specific as "just for Dachshund" or other breeds. It's very impressive. The last thing I will point out is their staff. I have yet to meet an employee there that is not pleasant, knowledgeable, and accessible. The staff also provides obedience courses, puppy training, and a pet grooming salon inside the location. I know, when it comes to pet care, Ames, Iowa will never have a shortage. It's top-class veterinary college with Iowa State will provide plenty of prospective providers. It is just so hard to a find a location comparable for that in one single location. I love this Petco! We never make it up to Ames, but our dog recently had to spend a week in the Neuro/ICU at the ISU small animal hospital, and we visited every day. A few times, we brought our other dog. We were able to take him to get a treat, and to just sort of ease all of our minds by visiting the store. The day we brought her home, she still couldn't walk and the employees gave her a ton of love to ease her nerves, without even knowing her story. The store's setup is great. It's new, it's clean, the employees are friendly. It can be kind of a mess in the back with the treats and the dog beds, but in all honesty, my dog loved running around and finding a bed with a wrapped treat in his mouth. They've got every service that we would use a Petco for, and the location is easy to find. The next time we go to Ames, it hopefully won't be for a heartbreaking visit to the ICU, but we'll definitely stop at this Petco again! read more

PetCo was unable to finish my dog's haircut on her previous visit due to my dog's anxiety. I was instructed to give the dog a sedative before our next visit. When I returned we were refused service because the dog had been sedated. I am not happy I was told to drug my dog and then refused service because my dog is drugged. I would leave zero stars if allowed. read more

Our dog had an appointment for grooming before the business was open. The doors were locked and could not gain access until they opened at 9 AM. We were then told that there was no time to schedule him in for the day. When my wife called about this, she was treated rudely over the phone. Will not be returning business there, way too many other options. If they talk like that to people, I don't want them handling my dog. read more

So on February 13 2021 I took my Dog Angel in for her grooming by there appointed groomer Caleb. So her appointment was 3PM. I dropped her off on time and hoped it wouldn't take too long. In fairness I gave him until 5PM to get her done. I was sitting in about 4:30 pm giving him at least 2 hours to complete her. I went at 5PM to see if was done with her he hadn't even started on her. He said hadn't he said he needed another half hour funny thing is I watched the customer that checked in before me leave with her Dog. I don't know about you if can't keep your appointment with a customer you let them know when arrive. So I ended up sitting in the parking lot for a another half hour. When called he didn't apologize for running behind but that wasn't the topper he said she was really was really matted which I knew was B.S. because I love my dog I play with her everyday run fingers thru her hair everyday. When I paid for the services I really got a shock a 45 dollar grooming turned into a 80 bill the cashier asked me I wanted to leave a tip I politely told her no because he was really late on doing her grooming. Why the 1 star like 1st he should have told me was unable to keep it 2nd if you are going to add 35 dollars on someone ones bill you should quote that upfront not after the service is provided don't worry petco after that 1were done. If make sure you get upfront price quotes or don't even go there. read more
