PUPPY SCAM ALERT
PET WORLD PET STORE, BAYSHORE, OTTAWA
Pet World in Ottawa sells puppies, and here is how they do it:
Pet World's LIE:
- They will proudly point to their "Feline/Canine Certificate" posted on the wall, stating that their puppies are inspected two or three times a year by the OSPCA and/or MAPAQ.
FACT:
Neither the OSPCA nor MAPAQ inspects breeders. EVER!
Pet World's LIE:
- When queried, they will then explain to you that municipal Government within the City of Ottawa inspects their breeders!
FACT:
The City of Ottawa DOES NOT and NEVER HAS, inspected breeders.
(Ottawa bylaw will investigate breeders but only if a complaint is filed).
WHAT TO EXPECT AT PET WORLD:
- They will sell you (what they claim to be) a purebred puppy in
the range of $3300 - $3800.00
- This puppy's parents will be anonymous;
- This puppy's breeder will be anonymous;
- This puppy will have NO registration papers;
- This puppy's pedigree, lineage and genetic composition will
be unknown;
- This puppy may be the offspring of inbreeding. You will never know!
- This puppy will come with only a one week guarantee!
That's what you get for $3300.00.
- This puppy may be as young as six weeks old!
Pet World's LIE:
- They will tell you that you can register the puppy directly with
the Canadian Kennel Club. (CKC)
- They will tell you that:
"The CKC will put the puppy on a table and they can tell by its
stance and its teeth whether or not it is purebred"!!
FACT:
It is NOT possible to determine the pedigree of a puppy without knowledge of the dam and the sire.
MORE LIES:
- When asked about a return policy, they will tell you that you
cannot return a puppy "just because you have changed your
mind.....".
FACT:
Under the City of Ottawa Bylaw, all purchasers have a 48 hour cooling off period within which to return a puppy FOR ANY REASON!! This was put in place to discourage impulse purchasing, also known as buyer's remorse.
Most people just want a family pet and registration papers aren't important to them.
HERE IS WHY THIS IS SO IMPORTANT:
You need to ensure that your puppy's genetic composition is uncompromised. Whilst no one can entirely guarantee a healthy puppy, reputable breeders, whose breeding females have been through health clearance testing, can guarantee the integrity of hips, elbows, eyes, heart, patella, and other breed specific health clearance issues.
YOU WILL NEVER GET THIS FROM PET WORLD!
ABOUT REPUTABLE BREEDERS:
Reputable breeders agree that optimum weaning is between 9 - 12 weeks.
- They will register their puppies with the CKC or AKC prior to
selling;
- They will microchip or tattoo the puppies as per CKC requirements;
- They will offer a two year guarantee against genetic defects;
- They will support new owners for the lifetime of the puppy;
- They will ensure that puppies are well socialized;
- They will start the house training process.
They will attest that puppies that are weaned too early often display traits that can be difficult to correct. For example:
- They do not develop early learning skills;
- They have difficulty learning normal social cues;
- They have no bite inhibition;
- They do not develop healthy gut flora;
- They are more likely to develop anxiety issues.
ABOUT THE Canadian Kennel Club: (CKC)
- The CKC WILL NOT register puppies unless the parent dogs are also registered;
- The CKC puppy registration application must be signed by THE BREEDER.
- The CKC, under its own Code of Ethics, does not allow breeders to sell puppies through pet store channels.
The CKC imposes the following requirements to register a puppy:
- Four generations of pedigree; (in other words, identification of the parents; the grandparents, and two generations before that);
- Identification of the breeder;
- A microchip OR tattoo that can be traced back to the breeder.
I do not advise EVER buying a puppy from ANY pet store for all of the above reasons.
