I have cats and a snake. They had a lot of good priced items for them compared to petsmart and petco which I don't like supporting due to their animal treatment. However, when we went in the ball python was being fed prey way too small for it, a pinky mouse/rat. Hatched baby balls don't even eat prey that small. It also had no water in its enclosure which we let someone know about before we left. Also, it had stuck shed which is due to low humidity. Heres a pic. The baby cornsnake was in a completely empty enclosure with no hides, but it did have aspen to burrow into. I will also attach a picture of my ball pythons setup and her drinking water because I know some people think snakes don't drink water. (I also know my setup isnt feasible for these types of stores however a little foliage would make this babys enclosure so much better and less stressful). Very nice smaller local pet store. You can find good sales here. Sometimes in the Gainesville Sun they will have coupons. Also if you ask for a discount they will usually give you 10%. But you have to ask, and it has to be on something $10 or over. The one and main thing that separates Pet Supermarket from Petco and Petsmart is they seem to always have 3 to 6 people working, and since it's such a small store they are always walking around asking if you need anything. The people there are always very helpful and knowledgeable. We really like this store. (and I made it out without having to get another goldfish for my daughter ! ya) read more

To save time, I called in advance to this place to ask if they had a certain flavor of cat food in a specific brand and the person who answered told me that they did. I went in and they did not have that flavor of cat food; they had the brand but not that flavor. I asked the manager, who must have been the same person I talked to on the phone about it, and she deflected and tried to explain away what she'd said on the phone. When I repeated what I had said exactly on the phone and what she had said back to me in that phone conversation, she said nothing in reply. She was lying. She just wanted to make sure I'd show up to the store to buy something, even if they didn't have it and I didn't leave with what I intended to get there in the first place. I actually did see a toy that I thought my cat would like and bought one so that the trip wasn't a total waste, and when I checked out she tried to pressure me into getting an impulse buy at the counter. -10 points for this manager. I looked it up and it seems that managers get sales commissions at Pet Supermarkets. That explains the high pressure sales tactics. But no one likes to be lied to, especially if it means a wasted trip. Nobody likes high pressure sales tactics either. If you're a new pet owner, don't get taken in by this kind of nonsense. Salespeople try to take advantage of the fact that you care for your pets and want them to be happy and healthy. Be careful about veterinarians too. read more

After shopping the larger pet stores and finding lots of empty shelves I decided to try pet supermarket because I was in that area of town. What a great store! Great service and they were able to help me get my aquarium back in order :-) I have five dogs, two cats and an aquarium. I do a lot of shopping for my pets! They provided excellent customer service, great inventory and very organized. I will definitely keep shopping there. read more

The customer service is extraordinary, with people helping me choose the right pee pee pads for my elderly pup. And search for the right food. There is a wide selection, well organized (except the big bags of Blue Buffalo dog food are in the other aisle from the small and medium sizes), and they have a VIP program to save over time. All the staff have been very kind and honest, not trying to push crap on me that I don't need, and the store is large enough to suit my needs but not too big to be overwhelming. read more

I've been there 3 times, and made one small purchase. The store is probably 90% for dogs, 10% for cats. Still, I wanted to buy local. But when their cat trees (small) are over $130 it makes it hard. The final straw was trying to get Frontline for my cat. The were selling 3 doses for over $60! I want to buy local, but not at my expense. I went to Walmart and bought the same item for $39.97. I will spend little more to shop local, but not 50% more! As for the food, I usually buy Blue Buffalo and their selection is just so limited. They have plenty of the crappy food, not sure why they don't fully stock the best. Not well run is all I can conclude. read more

Absolute worst service. we bought two Guinea pigs that ended up getting ring worms, the employees here are very rude and not costumer friendly, the employe that sold us the Guinea pigs never told us that they could get stuff like this even after we have asked him multiple times, don't buy any kind of pet from this establishment, they were very rude towards us, we couldn't even get in store credit, nor did they ask if we wanted them to get treated, the employe we got it from said 30 day return but the two bitchy woman's at the desk on Sunday 26th said 15 days which even on the website says 30 days, if your looking to get any sort of pet don't at all come here on PetSupermarket on 2339 NW 13th St, Gainesville, FL 32609 . This place is pretty great. They have a limited selection of certain items, but overall it is a great place to check. They have lower prices than Petsmart and some of the other pet stores. I recently bought a timed feeder for my cats and the staff was super helpful in finding one for me. They also gave me this awesome litter attractant I didn't know existed. At check out they found coupons and gave us as many discounts as they could. We also bought a self cleaning litter box, which our cat refused to use, so we had to return it. They were really nice about the return and gave us a full refund! read more

If I didn't already know it was a chain, I would think it was locally owned. It IS on 13th St, where everything seems to have a quirk or a charm to it(good or bad), and Pet Supermarket is no exception. All of the employees I have run into are extremely helpful and friendly and the store just has a much more personal feel to it than you would expect. They are also the only store out of the "big 3" around here that sell Taste Of The Wild dog food which is what we are currently buying. Truth be told, I prefer to try to shop online for pet food and supplies because it's always more convenient and often cheaper too. But in a pinch, Pet Supermarket is a better choice for us than Petsmart or Petco. read more

I give no stars to this store!! I purchased almost $50 in fish for 2 tanks that were each 5 gallons that I had all set up and ready for new fish. This was something fun for me & my 9 year old daughter. I was helped several visits by a wonderful gentleman named Jacob. A week after purchasing the fish one died & another shortly the same day, after that. I brought a water sample to the store with my dead fish, hoping to get some new ones. The water tested fine & there was really no explanation. I also Have another fish in that same tank that is doing well. The store "manager", Amanda shamed me for having a small tank. Insisted that something I did must have caused the fishes deaths. She nastily asked me for my receipt before she even tested the water & counted the fish I bought & challenged me that I had put 6 fish in a 5 gallon tank. I explained I had 2 separate tanks & followed all the necessary protocol that I learned from Jacob. She then scolded me for not bringing enough water to test & I said I could go home & get more but she went ahead and started the water test anyways. So, apparently there was enough water. Amanda was rude & unfriendly & Told me I need to look on the internet to learn how to take care of a smaller tank. Amanda also told me I needed to clean my 5 gallon tank once a week. She said that "5 gallon tanks are cheap but not effective". I told her I felt like she was blaming me & she didn't stop. She continued harassing me telling me about the ammonia levels & that I needed to buy a gravel vacuum & larger tank. I asked if the ammonia could have been the cause then why didn't that show up on the water sample I brought? And why wasn't the other fish affected. I also have a bottom feeder that has survived the same tank & my other 5 gallon tank with 2 fish and a bottom feeder are doing just fine. I felt like every time she said something she was accusing me & blaming me. What started out as a fun experience has turned into a dreadful one. I used to go to that store for all my pets needs but I will be looking for another place with better customer service for all my animals needs! . read more

Great NW neighborhood pet shop They seem to always ahem pet lovers on duty and when i take my dogs in they're showered with attention and treats They've got a lot of product in a small store with a full line of dog cat bird and fish supplies. They often have cats available for adoption. I buy bargain basement food for my foster dogs which i have to buy elsewhere as they don't carry really inexpensive food. read more

Why do I choose them over petco or pet smart? They have better dog food choices. It seems cheaper. Maybe I need to check on that but then that means I have to go else where and I don't want to. I needed 2 dozen crickets really badly today because I had to leave town for an emergency for a couple of days. I asked an employee named James for this, and he said they had less than a dozen crickets left. I asked if I could have what was left (even though I know this is a pain, but I REALLY needed them) and he went above and beyond took the time to fish threw the crickets, which is tedious, and was able to collect enough for me. I've only used this store a few times, but I plan on becoming a regular (and may update this review as a develop a closer relationship). I generally don't care for "big box" pet stores, but I like Pet Supermarket. This store is smaller, with a local pet shop atmosphere. The staff-- in my experience-- is very friendly and knowledgeable, versus the inexperienced or downright apathetic staff of other stores. If an employee can't answer one of my questions, they do their best to find out for me (no "I dunno's" or, worse, wild guesses). A couple of weeks ago, I bought a cockatiel at this location. I talked out the decision with a female employee who'd owned birds herself for 7 years. She followed me around the store and made sound recommendations about food, toys, supplies, travel cages, etc.. Not trying to rack up a bill, but simply setting me up with necessary supplies that reflected my desire for a healthy, happy bird. They sold me the bird without question. In retrospect, I wish they were a little more concerned about the animals' welfare. They didn't inquire as to whether I own or had ever owned birds, what kind of setup I had, if I knew this was a 20+ year commitment, etc.. A simple care sheet (which even Petsmart offers) would have sufficed. Back to the cockatiel... I didn't really know anything about the bird I'd purchased. I guessed it was younger (and at that age, they're difficult to sex), but they couldn't tell me much about it. He was skinny and a little quiet, but otherwise seemed fine. I took my bird to the vet a few days after I got it for a general health checkup. He tested negative for parasites and (as I later found out) psittacosis, but his bacteria count was very low. The vet's guess was that he was improperly weaned and didn't receive enough beneficial bacteria from his parents, which led to problems with digestion and malnutrition. The vet gave me a probiotic to help boost his bacteria levels. At about 4 am on the seventh night I owned him (read: the last night of his 7-day warranty), I heard a noise from his cage. I uncovered it, thinking he was having a night fright, and found him lying on the bottom grate. I took him out and he laid in my lap, eyes open but seemingly paralyzed, as I frantically searched the internet for help. Within the hour, he had what appeared to be several seizures and died in my lap. I didn't have a necropsy done (couldn't front the $100+ for an examination that would likely be inconclusive), but I called Pet Supermarket later that morning. The manager was kind and accommodating, expressing sincere sympathy and giving me a store credit (they don't offer refunds) for another cockatiel. I had to present them with my bird's corpse to get this credit-- not my ideal situation, but I understand their reason for it. It's also worth mentioning that in addition to not offering refunds, they don't comp vet bills ($200 down the hole for me). Anyway, the point of this long, sad story: I suspect Pet Supermarket gets their stock from bad breeders. This isn't unusual for "big box" pet stores (take heed if you ever buy from a bigger chain), but I was a little disappointed regardless. I debated whether I should even buy my next bird from this store, but I find it hard to throw away a $90 store credit. I will definitely pick a fatter, more active tiel and take it to the vet immediately. Despite the traumatic (and expensive) experience with my first bird, I give Pet Supermarket props for handling the situation reasonably well. I have hope that my next experience in bird ownership will be a positive one. I will definitely return to this store to get my next feathery child all sorts of treats and toys. I usually go to Petsmart on Archer, but I want to support more local business and save some gas money while I'm at it (I bike around town). Granted, Pet Supermarket isn't local per se, seeing as it is a chain, but the atmosphere is much more down to earth and the store is so much smaller than Petsmart. The people are also a lot more friendly and helpful than any I have encountered at Petsmart. Prices are actually cheaper, the variety is the same, and I am very pleased with the water dispenser I bought for my cats. I will move all of my pet shopping to the Supermarket now. :) read more

I bought my baby bunny there and all the animals were okay with being handled and you can tell they get love and attention! I was so happy I found this place! As one other reviewer said, this place has a very "mom & pop" type feel. The employees are very friendly and knowledgeable, seem to really enjoy working there, and recognize the "regulars." The selection here is as good, if not better, than the bigger pet stores, and the prices seem to be lower as well. This is definitely my go-to pet store! read more

Been there once to get flea products. Explained by an employee how to use the items(one of the items had no instructions. Not the store's fault) and after we did what we were instructed hours later we are taking our pet to the emergency room. The poison control told us that there were additional things we needed to so that we're not labeled on the box. How can you see chemicals without proper instructions? read more

Just wanted to say how great Pet Supermarket is. It has become much better then Petsmart. The staff is more caring. We have become new owners of 2 baby finches. We got our birds from them on May 4, 2016. We got a lot of help from Andres MG 12251. He answered all our questions and listed to our concerns.
