Going to Pet Food Express is like going to shop at Nordstrom. You are always guaranteed an exceptional service from the time you come in the store, during your shopping experience where someone is always there to help you, to the time you walk out and they say goodbye and thank you for coming. Unheard of today especially now. I've been to different locations especially when I lived in the Peninsula and coming to this San Leandro location did not disappoint. The best part at this location, they have a bathing station for your pets and large selection of dog food, and VIP Pet care is here every Sunday from 3-5pm. Cheers!

The only reason why I can't give this place 5 stars is due to the birthday cookie I purchased being hard as a rock. Neither dogs wanted it. But the service was top notch. I was so surprised as to how nice everyone was. Being new to the dog world and this also being my first time in this store. I saw my first self-service dog wash. I brought my puppy with me to Cali from Kansas, and we were celebrating his 1 year birthday. After talking to one of the workers, they were kind enough to give me a token, so I will be able to bathe my baby before we head back to the Midwest. So so kind. Will be shopping here whenever I come into town.

Ted's been having a bad tummy, so we're going to give this a try.

I made a mistake and bought the wrong kibble for Maybelline. She likes the smaller breed size. The store took the unused portion back for a full credit and I got the right one. They donate the unused products to humane facilities. As a volunteer for the Berkeley Humane, I know Pet Food Express donates a great deal of food and supplies. How great is that! Wow wow!

Dog washing is usually not the business for me LOL!i saw commercials and online marketing for this business for over a year but now finally decided to try this service. OMG! What a great experience it was! I was greeted by Brian, the staff person there at the counter. I had quite a few questions and his patience and knowledge of the business/services and how it all works was truly helpful with my light weight anxiety! I was attempting to wash two dogs at the same time and not just any dogs but 1 energetic bull terrier and curious bulldog! Brian walked me over to the stations and explained the amenities that were offered. For$15, you get 25 minute usage of the area. It doesn't seem like a lot of time for the $15 charge......but once you get to see how much helpful tools and accessories they have to help you, it totally made sense. I thought the 25 minute time limit would run out to quickly but I actually had more than enough time. Brian also offered to give me more time if I needed it at no charge. He explained the unlimited amount of towels that were nearby as well as biscuit snacks to keep the little guys occupied or distracted while I shampoo rinse or blow dry them. I liked how Brian asked if I had any other questions and if I did throughout the process to just give him a holler, but for the most part I felt pretty comfortable. They have three different varieties of shampoo since that are all within the not so strong perfume like aroma that could be overwhelming with some shampoos. It's great that the nozzle for the water is also the same unit you use for dispensing the shampoo. Kind of like the self-serve car wash stations you see locally. I think, in my opinion the best feature is the blow dryer! So that your dog doesn't end up having a semi-wet smell in your car as you got home. Although, both my dogs thought I was playing a game or they really didn't like the feeling of the cool air, It's not hot to avoid burns. But they are barking at the blowdry her as ours blow drying one and trying to towel together, I definitely got my calories burned this morning! Anyway, I originally tried to go to the Castro valley site which is a lot closer to my office but they don't offer the washing tubs, they got the dog park instead. I truly had a great experience for the first time visit here at the pet Food express in San Leandro. The staff are well-informed and most of all, super helpful and love animals in general! They frequently checked in to see if I was OK, kept one dog occupied while I washed the other and had snacks on hand to distract them. They have a ongoing special where you buy three tokens you get the fourth one free. Each token is $15 so I think it is worth it. Too messy at the house, running out of shampoo and having to use human shampoo and also the blow dryer convenience here's what I think makes this a great service to dog owners! Keep up the great work over there in San Leandro Brian and Staff

I cannot say enough positive things about this Pet Food Express. The service, the products, the availability, etc., it's all way above average. I visited PFE a couple days ago looking for a new calming bed for my Pomsky, Zoe. Recently, she began sleep overs a couple nights a week with another family member and it's a new environment for her and we want her to be comfy. I was introduced to a new product "Blossom Hemp Oil" to help alleviate my puppies possible nighttime anxiety. I thought, "Okay, you guys have taken such good care of my tea-cup Wolf this last year and a half, I'm down." I purchased the CBD/hemp oil and tried it out for the first time last night. Wow! What a difference it made in her bedtime behavior. She was relaxed, happy, rested, stress free. When we tried to take her for her late night walk she was relaxing under the bed (she makes a little cave there), totally content. She didn't even wanna go outside to potty... #hellachill I would suggest this PFE location, the products and the guest service to anyone. They are amazing! Thank you for helping me become the best mini-Husky mommy I can be to my baby Zoe. I couldn't do it without you.

The professionalism and structure they bring is unmatched. They manage their facility much like a children's daycare, every dog is carefully evaluated before being welcomed into the community, vaccinations must be up to date, and safety is clearly their top priority. The facility is incredibly clean, organized, and thoughtfully run. We also love all the extras they offer. From different levels of boarding (the highest tier even includes a special tuck-in and Kong treat!) to dog training, bathing, nail trimming, and their fully engaging playrooms, complete with Dog TV, play structures, bubbles, pool days, and themed activities, it's clear they go above and beyond to make every stay fun and enriching. They even include webcams for us parents to check in on them from time to time! Our doggie Herkules absolutely LOVES his Dogtime family. It is truly his home away from home, and he gets so excited every time we pull into the parking lot. As very particular dog parents, trust means everything to us -- and there is no place we trust more than Dogtime. Tony and Krista have done an incredible job since taking over the business. This is in response to Lucia's comment below…read more 1) He did not have existing scratches. Mickey stayed here for boarding from June 24-July 8. Please look at the newly added picture of his nose just the day before drop-off. Where are the scratches? Don't lie. I also have texts of you admitting you didn't notice the scratches on his nose during his stay or how they formed when we asked about it. Those are new scratches. 2) He recently stayed at another boarding center, Club K9 in Sunol, and he was fine. Zero issues. He came back with all A's on his report card. The handlers handled him fine. Multiple people were able to leash him and take him out without a problem. I highly recommend them for boarding. They have multiple people on site watching the dogs, instead of two. They have a better handle on the dogs and any situations that may arise. Aside from this experience that you claimed, I had zero experience of him showing any aggression to myself or others (including strangers). I'm not saying he didn't bite you or your nephew, I'm saying something or someone must've triggered it cause this has never happened before. NEVER. Since this was my first boarding experience, I went in blindly and trusted her version of what was happening, the biting, the fighting, etc.. After my second boarding experience elsewhere, I am more skeptical than ever about why Mickey was acting the way he was at Lucia's. I find it odd that he was showing aggression. He has stayed with me a total of 5 months now, 1 and a half months when I dropped him off at Lucia's, and was unsure of how he would act there since I've never done this before. After spending 5 months with him, the dog she described does not align with what I've been seeing on a daily basis. He has been in several foster homes and has never had any experience with aggression. Some homes included other dogs and cats. In regards to Lucia's comment "Which part of this are you taking responsibility for?" I should have researched your boarding center more and taken the 1-star reviews on yelp and google reviews more seriously. This was my first ever boarding experience and I wasn't sure what to look for or ask. During the meet and greet, there were no other dogs present but she assured me it was fine and that he would fit right in. Red flag #1 -- Since Lucia was the "expert" I trusted her judgment, although my partner questioned why there weren't any dogs around to be sure Mickey got along with them. Red flag #2 -- One person looking after 6+ dogs? I should've known better. Red flag #3 -- When feeding him the first night, he got into the other dogs' food. He has food allergies, I specifically asked for him to be isolated. She assured me MULTIPLE times that wasn't a problem. The instructions weren't followed and I have the texts to prove it. Red flag #4 -- He is kennel trained. He sleeps and eats in his crate since he went to the rescue and prior with his previous owners. One of the nights you let him out of the crate to feed him a snack in the middle of the night with your senior dog present when you could've just slip it into the crate. I'm not sure why he attacked your dog and I truly apologize if he did, but several of these situations could've been prevented had my instructions been followed. I should have pulled him out, but I had no one there to take care of him. If I could go back, I would've found somewhere else. I take responsibility for not doing more research and asking the proper questions during the meet and greet process. There are reviews of dogs getting loose during their stay and Lucia running down the block and yelling within the boarding facility and she acknowledges it in her replies there. I should've looked at all of this prior to our stay. That was my mistake. I let a lot of the red flags slide and put my dog's health and safety in jeopardy. If you have time, take a look at the reviews on google and dig further in yelp. I stand by my statement that if you have a rescue dog, please take them elsewhere. And based on the tone and replies to negative reviews, you should reconsider letting your dog stay here even if your dog is well-socialized and easy to care for.

Dr. Doe, Dr. Ekloff and a couple of other vets whose names I no longer remember, took care of our "kids". After they both passed, we decided not to have any more dogs as we were heading toward retirement and more travel. Then in late 2023, Mochi, a 3-year-old purebred Shiba Inu needed a temporary home. We knew her and her humans and brought her home to stay with us for a couple of weeks. When we realized that she was going to need a new forever home, we had to decide whether to give her up to another family or keep her for ourselves. Sentimentality once again beat out common sense. So, we changed her name, re-registered her existing chip, bought pet insurance and looked into a new vet. In order to do our due diligence, we checked yelp ratings and then called around. Many offices, including Good Samaritan, were crushed by volume during the COVID-19 epidemic and were not accepting new patients. A computer check showed that we were still listed in their computers even though at least 15 years had passed. Because of the past patient relationship, Mochi was accepted as a patient. We managed to make a wellness check appointment with Dr. Doe, the owner, to establish baselines. The following month, we received a letter from Dr. Doe stating that he was retiring. Since then, we've been to the office a few times, for vaccine's, a nail trim and once when she had something sticking out of her b*tt. The staff and especially one vet tech were kind and helpful to us and our fur baby. On the last visit, we met another Vet who I had a great conversation with regarding food, diet and weight control. I'm sorry that I forgot her name, but she really spoke with enthusiasm and authority without trying to sell anything offered at the office. I knew that if she were the attending vet, we would be in good shape. We take very good care of our Princess. At the vet's suggestion, we took her off of Science Diet but Lamb and Rice as her main diet and switched to "fresh foods" from Ollie. She still gets a few bits of kibble sprinkled with her food and it's also used as a training tool. This past Monday, while on her evening walk, I noticed that her ear looked a little off. When we got home, I saw that most of the fur behind her right ear was gone as well 1/2 the fur from her left ear. There wasn't much we could do. We did have some hot spot spray and used it, but it didn't seem to make much difference. On Tuesday morning, we call Good Samaritan to schedule an appointment to have Mochi checked. We were told that they were booked up and the earliest available appointment was on July 31. Not 24 hours later, but 24 DAYS later. We were also told that we could be added to the waitlist should any appointments be cancelled and if we were really concerned, to take Mochi to an Emergency Veterinarian Hospital or try another vet. It leads to me wonder if day to day health is taking a backseat to scheduled wellness visits and vaccinations. One thing for sure, I see no reason to return to Good Samaritan.

This review is describing my experience with everything pet bird related at this store: cage, food,…read moretoy selection; cleanliness and organization; and the worst part--that they sell birds. Not only do they sell birds, but they house the birds in a tiny, cramped, windowless room in tiny cages, with one fluorescent ceiling light and what appears to be no human interaction or fresh air or appropriate light. The room is about the size of my bedroom, and there are cages stacked to the ceiling full of birds, but the cages are tiny. Back when I didn't know any better in the '90s, I purchased two parrots from pet stores, as "hand-raised babies," but those stores had all the birds in appropriately sized cages with sunlight and lots of toys and out time with visitors if you sanitized your hands. They felt out the potential owners and didn't sell birds to just anyone. Now I know better, as I volunteer with a local parrot rescue that has to turn away hundreds of unwanted pet birds a year on top of the hundreds they take in. One of those volunteer duties is doing home visits for the adoption applicants, and one took me this week to near this store, and the applicant told me about it and showed me this terrible-looking seed mix they purchased there for pets. So I stopped by this store to see what/why they were selling, and the sad and crowded windowless bird-commodity room made me cry. I left in tears. I had first browsed the shelves for toys and food, and I found the shelves unorganized, out of stock on several items, and the floors dirty. Plus a cat running around. And the cages they were selling were all tiny as well. Here's something significant and equally emotional. Under "pets" on the front page of their website, they strongly encourage adopting from shelters for dogs and cats. SO WHY NOT BIRDS? Birds live longer, are more complicated, are often more intelligent and with more complex needs, and our rescues are overrun! WHY?!?! (Profit! And it's terrible.) This is their own words--why don't they believe this for birds??!! They should contact every rescue on the West Coast and find out how overrun we are. "We have in stock a selection of small pets which include birds, fish, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids. If you are looking for a pet kitty or pooch, we HIGHLY urge you to check out the local shelter where there are great animals looking for loving homes. Mike's Feed & Pets does not sell dogs or cats but we do have a complete line of products to help you care for them"
