The only reason why I can't give this place 5 stars is due to the birthday cookie I purchased being hard as a rock. Neither dogs wanted it. But the service was top notch. I was so surprised as to how nice everyone was. Being new to the dog world and this also being my first time in this store. I saw my first self-service dog wash. I brought my puppy with me to Cali from Kansas, and we were celebrating his 1 year birthday. After talking to one of the workers, they were kind enough to give me a token, so I will be able to bathe my baby before we head back to the Midwest. So so kind. It's always pretty busy with people washing their dogs at the self service washing stations, and I love to see all the different breeds of dogs whenever I visit. And although busy, the staff always does an excellent job of moving people through and getting you helped and checked out quickly and easily. They also carry such a wide variety of products. My dog is allergic to everything under the sun and with the help of the staff, I was able to find a food and treats for my boy that he's not allergic to and he absolutely loves. SOLID FIVE STARS - above and beyond and this goes for every Pet Food Express location that I have been to. But in particular, the San Leandro location will always have a special place on my Yelp and for my dog, Aspen. For the longest time since becoming a pet owning, I actually avoided coming to Pet Food Express because I figured it was like another Petco or Petsmart and didn't want to over pay for items and the pet wash in particular. But then, the Unleashed at Greenhouse started getting ridiculously busy and the staff were starting to get less friendly, so I figured why not and let's try Pet Food Express. I knew a few people go there and have raved about it in the past. We go and long story short, we will only come here moving forward for pet washes and other needs. In short, this review will primarily be based on the pet wash (which deserves the 5 stars on its own)! It's 18$ a wash (or the best deal is during Black Friday where you get 10 washes for $120, or honestly, they still run their B3G1 free, so for every 3 washes you buy, you get a free one). The washes come in token form, so you can buy in advance and head to the back of the store for a wash. They have 5 washing stations, each with its own tub, dryer hose, leash hooks, access to water. Each station also comes with 2 towels (but you can basically use unlimited towels, the staff just bring you more if you need), treats for your puppers, and disposable aprons to prevent you from getting wet. They also offer waterproof collars if you need! I love that each of the stations have stairs to get into the tub so it's perfect for your dogs who aren't able to jump or if you can't lift them in. You need to purchase a token in advance and its good for 25 minutes from when you insert the token it. The first 3 options are water + shampoo with different scents and functions. The 4th option is just warm water, and the 5th is the dryer. Do not worry about having to use another token if you need additional dryer time. I have a Husky/Malamute and she is a nightmare to dry but they will reset the timer for you if it's not too busy! I mean, saving you $18 dollars to dry your dog for a second time! I love that they really take care of the area and there is always a staff around to assist if you need. They are spot on to clean up right after a dog is finished with their bath and clean the tub for the next people to use. Never had any issues with the water temperature or pressure. Also, if your dog somehow escapes your clutches, there is an emergency button on the left wall you can press (big, red button you can't miss) to lock the front doors of the store so it can't run outside! I cannot rave enough about their pet wash! Another winner sales pitch they have here is majority (not all) of their items in store are B3G1 free - as long as they are the same type of item, meaning it doesn't even have to be the same brand or protein! Great way to try out different treats and food. From experience, the pet shampoo/conditioner and wipes are NOT part of the B3G1 free. But their prices are fair and not ridiculous! Fantastic selection of variety items and always a friendly face to help you out if you need. Somehow the staff here have the perfect balance of being there to help when you need, but not just hovering over you. I don't know what it is, but the customer service here is absolutely unmatched! Note, the SL location is only one besides Fremont that is nearby here with a pet wash. The CV location does not have one! read more

I purchase Stella and Chewy Patties, and I add different treats to their diet, however when it comes to samples "Gio" is very rude and unwilling to let customers try their samples unless they are going to change the whole diet to the brand they have samples for. I hope management changes soon, the whole experience is overall unpleasant. and its very unwelcoming. The cashiers are always busy and not willing to help. Seem grouchy and selfish. The shelves were neat & tidy (organized) and well stocked. I found the store to be inviting, in spite of staff having to manage a high rate of loitering (assumingly unstably housed and/or mentally ill persons from the nearby hospital). *THE SUMMARY* In short, today's visit exceeded my expectations. Dog washing is usually not the business for me LOL!i saw commercials and online marketing for this business for over a year but now finally decided to try this service. OMG! What a great experience it was! I was greeted by Brian, the staff person there at the counter. I had quite a few questions and his patience and knowledge of the business/services and how it all works was truly helpful with my light weight anxiety! I was attempting to wash two dogs at the same time and not just any dogs but 1 energetic bull terrier and curious bulldog! Brian walked me over to the stations and explained the amenities that were offered. For$15, you get 25 minute usage of the area. It doesn't seem like a lot of time for the $15 charge......but once you get to see how much helpful tools and accessories they have to help you, it totally made sense. I thought the 25 minute time limit would run out to quickly but I actually had more than enough time. Brian also offered to give me more time if I needed it at no charge. He explained the unlimited amount of towels that were nearby as well as biscuit snacks to keep the little guys occupied or distracted while I shampoo rinse or blow dry them. I liked how Brian asked if I had any other questions and if I did throughout the process to just give him a holler, but for the most part I felt pretty comfortable. They have three different varieties of shampoo since that are all within the not so strong perfume like aroma that could be overwhelming with some shampoos. It's great that the nozzle for the water is also the same unit you use for dispensing the shampoo. Kind of like the self-serve car wash stations you see locally. I think, in my opinion the best feature is the blow dryer! So that your dog doesn't end up having a semi-wet smell in your car as you got home. Although, both my dogs thought I was playing a game or they really didn't like the feeling of the cool air, It's not hot to avoid burns. But they are barking at the blowdry her as ours blow drying one and trying to towel together, I definitely got my calories burned this morning! Anyway, I originally tried to go to the Castro valley site which is a lot closer to my office but they don't offer the washing tubs, they got the dog park instead. I truly had a great experience for the first time visit here at the pet Food express in San Leandro. The staff are well-informed and most of all, super helpful and love animals in general! They frequently checked in to see if I was OK, kept one dog occupied while I washed the other and had snacks on hand to distract them. They have a ongoing special where you buy three tokens you get the fourth one free. Each token is $15 so I think it is worth it. Too messy at the house, running out of shampoo and having to use human shampoo and also the blow dryer convenience here's what I think makes this a great service to dog owners! I visited PFE a couple days ago looking for a new calming bed for my Pomsky, Zoe. Recently, she began sleep overs a couple nights a week with another family member and it's a new environment for her and we want her to be comfy. I was introduced to a new product "Blossom Hemp Oil" to help alleviate my puppies possible nighttime anxiety. I thought, "Okay, you guys have taken such good care of my tea-cup Wolf this last year and a half, I'm down." I purchased the CBD/hemp oil and tried it out for the first time last night. Wow! What a difference it made in her bedtime behavior. She was relaxed, happy, rested, stress free. When we tried to take her for her late night walk she was relaxing under the bed (she makes a little cave there), totally content. 5 stars for the staff, and Vet ASSISTANTS . You're welcomed as you enter with a smile from the cashiers and store staff. The Vet Assistants are extremely friendly and my dog who rarely does, goes right up to him and greets him. He usually keeps to himself til we tell him to go say hi but he definitely took a liking to the guy. Taller guy, short hair, slim build. This review is for the Dr/Vet. First , he looks like he doesn't want to even be there. All other staff are dressed in scrubs , while he's in dingy jeans , button up shirt, running shoes. The assistants are going over previous pet files with him and he's just nonchalantly listening, or maybe he wasn't. I get some dogs are antsy at the vet , and his staff did a great job greeting and calming my dog. However drawing blood from a dog restrained near the floor was a bit off putting when there was a table next to us. Dr with his nonchalant attitude goes in, sprays, then proceeds to draw blood. I'm not saying cuddle with the dog but have a little more tenacity towards the body language. He seems like he's just there to poke and go with the pets and it wasn't even a busy day. Do yourself a favor , if you have a small animal , young , he may be fine with them , but any perhaps "extra" effort if you will from him, don't expect it. read more

There are several good things I can point out about my recent experiences with pet food express. My first was that I sent a question through the Yelp app to the business asking about their dog self-bathing/washing area. I got a response that was detailed and explained exactly what I wanted to know. Eventually I went into the location and the man working there was very very helpful, courteous, and was just an overall pleasant guy. Every single dog washing station is out of soap and did not work/suds up like normal. They told us the soap machines were refilled after we switched stations THREE times. They offered me bottles of soap but why should I when you can just go refill the soap machines?????? The guy told me nothing is wrong with their machines and that it was a "low suds shampoo".....really?! I have been coming here for years that I think I know the difference. Also, the water was not even warm. So I took my 1/2 washed soggy wet dog elsewhere. Never coming to this location again. Waste of my time and a total inconvenience because now I have to take my dog elsewhere to get a proper washing. read more

We recently adopted a dog rescue and started to look for places with dog wash stations. The closest one to our home was this one. We chose to arrive around 11:30am, good thing too. By noon, all 5 stations were booked. So my first recommendation is plan to arrive early. The stations are fully tiled and not height adjustable. I'm 5'8" and it is about right height. It is about 24" deep and was a reach when my dog decided to hug the wall to avoid getting washed. There are splash resistant aprons to use and recommended. I didn't use one at my first visit and my dog wasn't the only one getting a bath! Hahaha! Towels are also included. You have 25 mins total, this includes dry time. So plan accordingly, especially if your dog has long or matted hair. The water, choice of shampoo, conditioner, and hair dryer are all controlled by the token drop panel. The water temp was cool for the first minute or so and may shock your pet. So maybe rinse their feet first. The water will reach a comfortable temp and stay there the whole time. There are water proof collars available to borrow. There are also several short cable wall leashes to provide a secure environment while in the wash basin and later the drying platform. The dryer isn't too loud, but very breezy. Not too hot either, so drying time took longer than I expected but I got about 90% done. For less than a couple of frozen coffee drinks, you can avoid the hassle and mess of washing at home. read more

By far my favorite location! I have a very stubborn pug with a stubborn tummy so it is difficult to find treats to make him happy (and my nose happy)! I went in the other day and the associate (I think his name was Danny? Daniel?) was not only knowledgeable, but personable! There were quite a few customers in the store, but I appreciated the fact that he still took the time to assist us in finding the right snack for my pup. The associate introduced us to Plato treats AND the grain free greenies! Grain Free heaven! What a selection! This is a great location, in the past we've taken our dogs for baths. Our favorite pet store! We live close by so often will drive or walk over with our dog Luna so she can pick out a new toy or treat. The staff is always super courteous & they love interacting with the animals that come in, Luna almost always gets a treat from them when we go to pay lol. They've also been very helpful in helping us choose new products depending on our needs. They've helped us battle fleas, nail trimming, walking, and bathing! I come here only for their self wash so this is what I'm basing my review on. Price: $15, this is #1 reason I'm giving this place 4 stars. You get a token that you put into the machine and your washing/drying is timed. Compared to Unleashed by Petco a few miles down, it's $10 and all you can wash/dry. The washing process: Being able to apply soap and water at the same time from one hose saves time and effort which is why I guess $15 might be worth it? They have all the things you need to clean your dog. As for drying, I wish it was on a different timer, big dogs need A LOT more drying time than a average sized down. I do like their setup since it's tiles instead of a stainless steel tub. read more

I've always loved pet food express, been shopping here for 12 years, and never had a bad experience. We recently adopted a puppy and have gone here a few times since, it's the closest pet store and it's well stocked. However, since adopting our puppy I have had issues with two store employees. The first will follow us around the entire time we are in the store, constantly touching our puppy without asking and will just step in front of us, cutting us off, to touch her. Last week, I believe it was Wednesday, these two employees went way too far and were so inappropriate. We were looking at the kittens during their adoption event and stepped ten feet away from our puppy while she was in the wagon. These two employees then went over to our puppy and belongings and did a photo shoot with our puppy, without my consent. When I told them that I did not feel comfortable with what they were doing they began gaslighting me to no end "well we weren't even taking pictures of your things, we were taking pictures of the adoption event". *while showing me pictures of employee posing with our puppy and cats weren't even in focus* "I don't understand why you're so upset about it. It's not like you were in the picture" etc, etc, etc. it went on. They whole time I was calmly stating that I was not comfortable and the employee who took them offered to delete them, not sure if they did. Under no circumstances should employees behave like this. They should absolutely not take photos without owners consent. And they definitely should not argue and gaslight the customer when they were in the wrong! I'm so upset by the situation. It was weird and uncomfortable and we will not return to pet food express. read more

PFE is always vey supportive of rescue dogs and this one is no exception. We were very excitedly awaiting its opening with the countdown clock in front when they were dong renovations. Love that its so close to home at this former Blockbuster location! Went in on grand opening week for a free puppy bath with our rescue and the staff was so friendly and helpful. Parking was nice and easy in spite of the crowd. Got everything we need, puppy had a good time and staff was helpful whenever we had a question or needed something we couldn't find.
