Small local joint in a strip center at the edge of Westbury. Pretty tasty authentic food and hardworking staff. Quaint interior with some cultural decor. Surprise stand out was the wings. Super crispy outside and juicy inside. I enjoyed the ceviche also. Lots of similar dishes where you basically pick different protein or starches. Shared open parking lot. Ceviche is still great but now the price is $22 before tax which is hard to justify when Peruvian ceviche in central Houston is $17 before tax. The portion is fish was also a bit less however the flavor is just as good and spicy packs a punch! The owner is very nice and checks up on you often. read more

I had lunch here at Peru Gourmet a week ago. It's in a strip center with plenty of parking available in front. Inside it's a small restaurant with about 8 tables and is a table service eatery. Upon recommendation of the owner/manager I went with the Lomo Saltado entree for $19. The meal arrived in less than 15 minutes and consisted of strips of filet mignon marinated and sautéed in a wok with red onions, tomatoes and yellow peppers all bathed in a red wine sauce. The meal was delivered by a lady working in the back without any utensils. The owner/manager was busy the entire time with a party of eight people who were obviously friends of his chatting away so eventually the lady came back out and I asked her for utensils which she then brought. I didn't think the meal was anything special taste wise. The filet mignon wasn't as tender as I had hoped and I couldn't taste much of the red wine among the veggies. It was a 3 star meal in my opinion at best. The french fries that came with it were the regular frozen out of a bag style. It was an average tasting meal with poor table service and therefore no reason for me to return. read more

This was my first time coming here, but it won't be my last. Upon entering, I was greeted by the friendly owner, who gave me great recommendations. I got the lomo saltado and two pork tamales with picked onions. Lomo saltado is tender filet mignon and savory brown sauce on a bed of white rice and French fries. I was unsure about how the fries would taste, but it works! It was so good that I wish I bought two plates. Nice portion size too! Tamales were delicious and the pickled onions complemented them very well. Washed everything down with a can of Inca Kola, a Peruvian soda. We ordered ceviche, chaufa and pollo a la brasa. The pollo a la brasa tasted like mop water and as if it had been rotten from the start of preparation and for sauce they gave us ocopa which was weird. The ceviche and chaufa was nothing but below average. The place is not illuminated enough and they have a bright white light in the middle of the day. Nothing gourmet about this place. read more

Don't expect high end interior, basically it's a hole in the wall in a somewhat sketchy strip mall (I can say that, I live close by ha). Don't let the exterior or exterior fool you....what...so...ever! This place is a hidden gem. We ordered take out and the food was pretty quick to be prepared. We ordered the Ají de Gallina and Arroz Chaufa de Pollo. OMG! The Arroz Chaufa de Pollo tasted better than any stir fried rice I have had in ANY Asian food restaurant. Hands down! The ladies recommended some other dishes for next time and I will definitely take them up on it. I live not even a mile from this place and I am already ready to go back. This is some seriously tasty Peruvian cuisine. Saw all the rave reviews and pictures and had to come see for myself. My wife and I and our foodie son saw they were open for dining in so we showed up with appetites. Everybody tasted everything, all of it was 5 stars. The chicken soup was full of good stuff, 5 stars. We snarfed a few beef empanadas, more 5 stars 'cause that's as high as the scale goes. The pork/chicharron sammy was on great bread and the pork was oh so tender and full of flavor. The chaufa with chicken was the second best fried rice he's ever had, his fave is the Japanese place that does a show, meaning they play with your food. I decided tk stop here because the best Peruvian restaurant ive had in Houston was La Guitarra and the reviews here are high...made a quick U-turn and that was the best decision of the day! We walked in and were greeted with a smiling masked face. We decided to dine in. I always order Lomo Saltado. This is hands down 5/5. The meat is tender! Sauce is very savory and flavorful! The portion is great! I had the tamales as well. Very savory, and the masa alone i couldve eaten without the filling! The pickled onions on top made this dish 5/5 for me. The rotisserie chicken was 3/5. But dont sleep on the black beans! Soooo savory, soupy, not mushy and man...I could drink this! The huancaína sauce was very watery and did not taste like huancaína. The ceviche was fresh, the jalea was acceptable, but the arroz con mariscos had fake crab in it. I was really looking forward to the hype since my mom lives close by & there aren't many good restaurants to choose from in this area. We went by for a late lunch Saturday, I ordered the lomo saltado & my mom had the pollo a las brasas. The lomo saltado was average at best, for $18.95 there was little filet on my plate as it was mostly rice, fries & what seemed to be an entire sliced red onion. Fist time ever trying Peruvian food I was a bit hesitant at first but I love it. We stared off with the empanadas de carne. Now these are sweet they add powdered sugar at the top and raisins on the inside. The dipping sauce compliments the empanada perfectly and I'm not much of a sweet salty person yet I highly enjoyed them. As our main plates we had the chupe de camarones that I liked but hated the bowl it was served in. It was like a two level bowl dish in the center plate at the top it was annoying to eat. The soup itself was delicious it was a bit spicy and creamy. We also ordered the camarón salteado it was a stir fry mix of shrimp, squid, calamari , clams, and mussels with tomatoes and pepper and a really good sauce. Overall we loved the food, the location is quite small but very family friendly. It is a bit expensive but worth it will most definitely be coming back. read more

This one was tough to give a rating to because I am torn between a 4 and a 5 star...here's why. Food: the food is absolutely stunning! Everything is so flavorful, it tastes so authentic, and it's plated and presented really well. Absolutely exquisite! Had the Arroz con mariscos, which is a stir fried rice with seafood. There were so many flavors going on that just blended so well together. The best way to describe is like your Mexican rice, but not as greasy, so I really enjoyed it. They had all kinds of seafood in there as well, like shrimp, squid, and mussels. Typically, you would think that it wouldn't go well, but it does go really well together. I do with some of the mussels plated had a bit of flavor to them, but I think traditionally, it's just boiled. We also had the ceviche mixto which is a mix of all different types of seafood, and this was definitely very flavorful, citrusy, and very refreshing. It has that sour lime taste of a ceviche, but it wasn't overpowering to where it makes you pucker. This is probably one of the best ceviches I've ever had because they do give you a great dinner entree sized dish, the seafood was cleaned very well, so there wasn't any of that fishy taste, and all the pieces were cut up and marinaded to perfection. I got a side of yuca fries, just to see how it measures up to other places, and I must say, they have a very good crisp on it. I do like my yuca fries a bit more tender, so these were a bit tougher, but still very good texture, and it came with a mayo/mustard mix that was really good for dipping. Atmosphere: this is a small mom and pop restaurant, so there isn't much seating available, but overall it's really nice and quaint. They keep the place very clean and nice looking. Service: The owners (I assume) were really nice and very cordial. The only thing that kind of sucked was when I ordered a dish, they came out later and told me they were out of it. Then ordered another one, just to find out that they also ran out of components for that dish, so my final order came out a bit later than expected. However, i do understand because we did come in towards the end of the night and they were really nice about it and comped my meal for me because of the trouble. The food overall did take some time to come out, but I guess that just means that they make it fresh. Despite the issues, I would definitely go back to try the dishes I didn't get to. I am a huge supporter of mom and pop shops, and this is definitely a hole in the wall worth trying. (even if the parking lot area seems a bit shady) read more

It was tough deciding whether to give Peru Gourmet 3 or 4 stars. On one hand, the food was pretty tasty. On the other, it seemed expensive for what you get and the service was pretty slow. Food: - Appetizer: Yucca fries. These were delicious. Well-fried with tender yucca and a delicious dipping sauce. However, it cost $7 and came with only 5-6 medium sized fries. Pretty pricey for what you get. - Iced Coffee for $2.50 was pretty tasty! No burnt or bitter flavor, not watery, and came with whole milk you could pour in. - Arroz Marisco: Similar to a seafood paella but more of a risotto texture. At $16 it was also pricey for one entree, but it was a large amount of food, easily enough for 3-4 smaller portions for a table. Flavor was on point with lots of seafood strewn throughout it. Would get again! - Ceviche pescado: On the smaller side for $13. Fish was fresh with a wonderful lime-cilantro dressing and tasty sides of sweet potato and two versions of corn kernels. I think for the portion size it wasn't worth the price, but it was very tasty nonetheless. Service: very polite but so slow. Our entrees probably took 30 minutes? to come out and it was a Sunday late afternoon. One order was incorrect so it was brought back and took maybe another 20 minutes for it to actually come out. Pricing: again, the food was delicious, but we were surprised that such a casual joint in a random strip center would manage to rack up $20/person before tip where each person got one entree and we shared an appetizer and drink. Would I come back? Probably. The food was really tasty and I'd love to explore more of their menu. At least now I know to expect slightly higher prices and not the fastest service...whether or not that would deter me from wanting their food again probably depends on my mood that day :P read more

I love Peru Gourmet! An unassuming place tucked away, but great food and great price. You can definitely tell that the food is homemade, which I love. But don't walk in expecting a great gourmet Peruvian meal. That being said, there are some drawbacks to home cooked obviously, but this place is great and worth coming to. We started with the camaron a la huancaina, which was just breaded shrimp. It was so good, but exactly what you'd expect breaded, fried shrimp to taste like. We then got the ceviche de pescado. I was so happy when it came out because it's been ages since I've had Peruvian ceviche served with corn and corn nuts. There was even the sweet potato! My first exposure to authentic Peruvian had these accompaniments with the ceviche, so I was happy to see Peru Gourmet's authenticity (some homey places don't put in that extra effort). I don't have Peruvian family, but I think that this would be the encapsulation of what going home to a Peruvian family would feel like. The ceviche tasted EXCELLENT, exactly how they have it even at fancier restaurants. Seriously, this was my favorite, and the portion was HUGE. Definitely a great value for your money! Next was the pescado a lo macho. I only came to Peru Gourmet because this is my absolute FAVORITE Peruvian dish, and Peru Gourmet was one of the only Peruvian places that actually had it. The sauce was runnier than I've had before (like I said, you can tell it's home made and not a product of big restaurant kitchen). The flavor wasn't as full bodied as I've had before (because homemade). It was a little salty, but over all, it was still delicious, especially considering the price.
