Right across from Grand Central, just down from the Grand Central Hyatt, you see Pershing Square. You go in and immediately are greeted by the well mannered and well dressed wait staff. The menu is not overwhelming. You order something simple but elegant, and a nice glass of Orange Juice. Then you look up, and see the magnificent interior of this place. Arriving there at Grand Central I was told to check out this place for a decent bite to eat. So with my bags I went there to eat. A Thursday evening! I had a really decent glass of a Rose Grenache for $10, and a yummy hummus/pita/veggie plate with tzadiki as well. It really hit the spot!! The waitress was very friendly and I had a great initial experience there. I actually went back again with my boyfriend later that weekend and we sat in front by the window. This time service was a little slower and we had to wait awhile for even our drinks. That's ok though..as we weren't really in a huge hurry. He had some chicken tenders which he liked and I again liked the hummus plate. Very convenient right out of Grand Central station and a great people watching place! read more

Ive been here a few times now and I am not sure what I think. There are a number of things that are great about it and there are other things that are pretty blah. The girl that led me to my table was nothing more that miserable, wanting to watch the footie as I had my lunch I was hoping to sit by the bar. she seemed to resent this. The waiters seemed to be more interested in each other than their tables ... so service ... pretty shite. The food here is good. The orange juice awesome. This definitely has a historical vibe to it. Apparently, via Wikipedia, in 1939 this steel and glass brick venue was built under the viaduct at the south end of Pershing Square to provide info to all the crazy tourists running around near Grand Central. It was later converted to the restaurant it is today. Apparently 2 films have shot scenes there or near there, The Avengers and Friends with Benefits, where Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis' characters have their first date (who knew haha). The drink special that early evening was ok; I think a good glass of white was around $8. I also had the French onion soup which was nothing to write home about but won points for being extra cheesy the way I like it. I also like that they serve the breakfast menu all day. read more

Overpriced for the quality and quantity of food. I know NYC is pricey, but over $30 for fish and chips and a soda? The fish and chips were pathetic. Five strips of fried fish, barely bigger than frozen fish sticks, and a handful of bland, thin-cut fries. My soda was an 8oz bottle with a glass of ice. I think you're paying for location more than anything else. There are so many better spots within a block of his place. Save your money and get a bigger, better meal elsewhere. read more

Easy place to meet up for breakfast with friends who live all over Manhattan since it is at GCT. Have been here mutliple times with groups of 4+ and never had to wait for a table. This is a really cute place and despite giving it 3 stars I will probably be back. The decor is great and the place has a nice feel to it. Beautiful restoration and renovation of a very timeless space done sensibly and respectfully. Unfortunately, the restaurant wasn't great. It took FOREVER to get a waiter to come and bring us water/ask us what we wanted to drink--maybe like 15 minutes sitting down before this happened. Minus serious points because I was very hung over. After a while, we got water and it was a while before it came again. Even longer before my coffee came and we ordered. Once we had a waitress it was better but she wasnt very good by any means. The coffee was good, the food not so much. I got a goat cheese frittata with purple potatoes and some other vegetables. It was really one note but definitely okay. Just not anything to go back for. Waiting just outside the main entrance of Grand Central Terminal, not unlike a stereotypical con man waiting outside a seedy bus terminal for wide-eyed, naive newcomers to the big city, sits Pershing Square Central Cafe. Make no mistakes, this is a diner, dressed-up in ribbon and dark wood with rich color accents, apparently hoping to position itself to attract high paying Park Avenue business types and travel battered workaday train commuters and tourists alike; and the fact they're still in business must mean they're succeeding on some level. The food is basic fare, from hot dogs for the kids to dressed-up potato chips with melted blue cheese for the more 'sophisticated' fast food diner. A full bar is available for cocktails and while so much about this place is very typical of Manhattan or any other large city, there's something especially disappointing about Pershing Square. Perhaps it's the gouge label-worthy prices, prices so ridiculously and unjustifiably high, one feels insulted at the menu. Or perhaps it is the level of pretense. The average diner never feels comfortable or at home here despite the cozy settings in the epicenter of hustle-and-bustle Manhattan. If you're hungry and can get out of Grand Central without falling for one of the near equally as unpleasant food joints there, keep going a bit farther. Don't let Pershing Square's neon sign, the interior or proximity fool you. It's as touristy as a scarf and bag salesman in Times Square. The world is at your feet in Manhattan, use them to take you far, far away from the doors of this unpleasant little place. read more

We lucked out and arrived early to eat breakfast at Pershing Square before going to Yankee Stadium. All of us enjoyed our meals. The OJ was fresh and tasty and had the sweetness of freshly squeezed oranges. Two people had the omelets - nice and dry with excellent fillings of onions, mushrooms, bacon, and feta cheese. You can have three fillings of your choice from about six offerings. I had the blueberry pancakes and they were attractively plated with powdered sugar and a few (4) fresh blueberries on the top. The pancakes, however, were filled with the berries. This was served with real maple syrup on the side. This food made for a great go to the ballgame meal till we had dinner later than evening. The only bad part of the meal were the potatoes served with the egg dishes. They tasted like they were sitting in water too long and were waterlogged. The coffee was good and our service was flawless. This place is large with seating for up to 340 people. So when it is filled, as it was when we went, it can be noisy. All in all we enjoyed our meals, paid the bill and crossed the street to Grand Central Station to travel to the Bronx. So convenient for our travel needs. I checked out the restroom and it was a triplex. Clean and adequate it was a bit small for the size of the restaurant but it had plenty of soap and paper towels to get the job done. read more

Other than the decor, nothing worth seeing here, unless you want to be ripped off. The continental breakfast item reads "a selection of pastries", for 15 dollars. The server bring 1 (one!) croissant, I ask them where is the selection of pastries, not one, but multiple, as per the menu. He points at the toast and jam and says that is it. All the other dishes come with toast! What a rip off! There was 5 of us at the table, the food was mediocre, overpriced. Serving was okay, we never ran out of coffee, why the 2-stars and not just one. read more

I would have to say this place absolutely horrible. So I was down in grand central and was extremely hungry and I happen to see a sign. "New York's busiest breakfast joint and the best in town!" Meh... Relative to the prices, this place is a 1 star. I ordered an appetizer (or so I thought) and a side of Mac and cheese. The appetizer that I ordered was the Lobster Cigars, $16. But what showed up was a Lobster Roll $24. I was in no mood to wait for the proper order, so I just ate it. It was OK, not $24 OK, $10 OK. It lacked any real flavor, for $24 i would expect to be wowed a bit more. The Mac and cheese was, terrible. I'm a Mac and cheese snob and this was a mess. It was clearly made without any love. It was like trying to eat melted sting cheese with a spoon... Spoons do NOT belong in a Mac and cheese dish, why did you put a spoon in it? I would go back perhaps for breakfast. But don't get caught up in its location and charm. The food doesn't live up to its price tag. read more

I've eaten here over a dozen times in the past few years. It's the most convenient place to have a breakfast meeting if you're a commuter into Grand Central. And the place looks and feels wonderful: like old New York. The food is solid. Their steel-cut oatmeal is very commendable. I usually ask for two fried eggs, sunny-side up with runny yolks and crispy edges. They usually get it just right. But the last time I ordered eggs, the waitress chided me about being too picky. It would have been funny if she was kidding or at least smiling, but she was just being a scold. The coffee is very meh. It kind of reminds me of Chock-Full-O-Nuts, which used to have a restaurant a few blocks away, about twenty-five years ago. It's kind of pricey for the kind of food it puts out. But you're not really paying for the food as much as the location and the experience, which I do appreciate. If you want a tasty diner-style breakfast for much less money, try the Comfort Diner, which is a few blocks away. Overall, I like the place. It's noisy as hell because of the tiled ceiling. This is not a review of their food, this review is for their lack of good customer service. I participate in SantaCon every year and I'm not one of those obnoxious drunk Santas! I actually take pride in doing what I do and I have MANY parents ask to take a picture of me with their children! My friends have to leave from Grand Central so last year we came here and had a great dinner (and drinks!) and then left. So this year we were going to do the same thing; it was the end of our night (8 pm!) and they refused us service. The man at the door said they don't DO Santacon! Even though we were offended, we offered to take off as much as we could do it didn't look like we participated in santacon. He still said no. We had street clothes to change into but why should we have to?! Why hold one group of people to a standard just because the lack of etiquette of another (same group who look similar?!) Isn't that an "ism" of some sort?! The fact that it's the Christmas season and 3 Santas (women and not drunk) come in, it could only be good for business (goodwill ) besides the fact that it's fun! Just as an aside. Last year we were waiting on a one hour line to get into the Times Square M and M store and the manager pulled us off the line to bring into the store because as he said, "We could use a few Santas in here!" Now THAT is good business! Hey Pershing Square Management, you can do all the marketing and CRA efforts you want, but negative word of mouth can ruin your business and I plan on telling everyone I know in NY and I'm old and know A LOT of New Yorkers! Also just remember Freaking Santacon is a fundraiser for the homeless so get with the effing program. Personally, i hope you go out of business soon and then the homeless people will have another place to find warmth. read more

However besides a arrogant host which needed to be pleased in order to stop her personal conversation was the service on the point. We only ordered burger l, again expectations weren't to high. Cant believe people are writing decent reviews about this place. Besides the space being nice, I had one of the worst NYC brunch experiences to date, and I'm not much of a complainer. To start, the waiter couldnt remember drink orders when two people ordered (one coffee, one tea) and he also poured coffee into my tea, without even asking first. More importantly, my meal was horrible. I chose to order a burger for brunch bc the menu was very boring and overpriced. The burger tasted so bad that I couldnt finish it. It tasted like how old ground beef would smell. Really unacceptable for New York. I kept taking bites to see if i was exaggerating but it kept tasting weird. I let a friend try and she confirmed that it did have a funny aftertaste. Unfortunately the waiter wouldnt refund me though b/c I had finished close to half. He also told the chef (who was at the bar. go figure) but the chef said he never had issues with his burgers. Of course. Funny thing is I asked the waiter why the chef was at the bar and not in the kitchen, and he said because it was down-time (place was really empty) and that they have down-time btwn 3-5pm. Only thing is, it was 2pm. And the place was about 5% full. Damn my friends for wanting a place close to Grand Central. read more

4 stars for food, 3 for service. This restaurant is really beautiful on the inside, with old school lamps, lanterns, and chandeliers, and much more spacious than it looks from the entrance. Came in for a late lunch/super early dinner, and it was almost empty, which is always a treat in this busy neighborhood. The waitress, while very sweet, was obviously super kelly green. While she performed every duty on her checklist, her questions were often out of context (asking if we wanted another beverage when our current ones were still full), and she was obviously a bit uncomfortable in her role. Soy decaf cappuccino was piping hot and the quality of the beans was surprisingly good. The cap didn't have nearly enough foam, but what it lacked in volume it certainly made up for in flavor. Just what I needed to start my meal. Grilled vegetable salad was very very blah. I'll be the first person to tell you that grilled vegetables and grains like quinoa and lentils, while healthy, can be made to be delectable, and that wasn't done here at all. Very bland, and pricey, at $11. Burger was tasty, the meat was juicy and flavorful and cooked to medium rare perfectly. Truffled potato chips were the star of the meal - thick cut and crisp, with truffle sauce drizzled over the top. Although I will say that sauce tasted more like blue cheese than truffle, it was tasty nonetheless and always a treat to have fresh potato chips. Overall a really gorgeous, charming bistro in an area where it may be difficult to find an oasis. read more

I like strong coffee in the morning. Me and my friend ordered the Egg Royale, which was egg Benedict with salmon and it came with potatoes. I wasn't to crazy about the egg benefit. This place seriously sucks. I wandered in hoping to grab a bite to eat while waiting for someone at Grand Central Station...my god do I regret that decision. Granted, it was a Saturday night around 9pm, but still, it shouldn't have sucked this bad. It's New York City. Anyhow... I got there, sat by myself, and literally had to ask one of the waiters to take my order. One or two walked past me about seven times, 15 minutes passed, and I grew impatient. I caught one's attention and said "Hi Sir, could someone take my order?" and he gave me this look and went "Well yes I guess I can do it." Really? So that guy took my order, another waiter comes over and asks something I already told the first waiter. Ok then. Fine. My food comes, I had asked for a soft drink and it didn't come with it. I had to call over another waiter and ask for that. Seriously guys? This was horrible. When the soft drink did come, it was extremely watery. I really regret coming here. Again, I understand maybe Saturday night at that time isn't your A game, but I saw other people being waited on. People DO go out to eat by themselves every once in a while, and even if I was waiting for someone, don't waiters usually come up and say "Hi! Is there anything I can get you while you wait?" We checked this place out on Valentine's Day as it was located across the street from our hotel; I wish we hadn't bothered. First, we were greeted by a pathetic, half-hearted attempt at decoration in the form of hearts hastily taped to the windows. Alright. We went in and were greeted by a very disinterested hostess who walked us to a table and basically threw two menus down and said nothing to our Thank You. We sat down and noticed that the paint on our table-top was peeling; this was true of all the other tables in this place! OK, so what. We decided on what we wanted and tried to grab the hostess's attention as she seemed to be the only one who could see us (the rest of the staff didn't pay any attention to us). She made it a point to call her manager and said quite loudly (so that we could hear!), "They're looking at me!" like we were guilty of something truly terrible. OK. The waitress (a different girl) finally came out and took our order. This one was actually very polite and wished us a Happy Valentine for which we left her a nice tip. We ordered coffee and dessert and I have to say, both were truly horrendous. The coffee was overly sweet and the heavy vanilla flavor basically killed anything coffee-like about it. The raspberry mousse cake and the creme brûlée we had between us were stale and not worth the money. Needless to say, we did not enjoy the experience and won't be returning to this place any time soon. read more

On Friday, 9.21.12, 4 of us went to Pershing's.... I had been telling my fellow travelers how incredible it was (From my last visit). The waiter who greeted us ushered us to a table....we asked him if a booth was available... The usher then directed us to the front of the line. At that point, John McFadden, general manager, told the hostess don't seat them (meaning us)....these people were 1st...... Which was not true and he never even spoke to us or questioned us!!!! We were taken to a booth in the back of the restaurant..... I observed that whenever he, McFadden, spoke to employees and/or customers, he was rude, condescending, cold, hateful!! Some have dismissed this as that's New York!! Not acceptable!!!!! There is never an excuse for rudeness!!!! I will no longer recommend or encourage others to eat at Pershing Square!! The plus to being at that booth was our waiter, Diego!!! He was very helpful, friendly, and took great care of us!!! Then, Patricia, a manager, came by to check on us!! She was very professional, yet, friendly. How sad........ I would hope to never treat others like I witnessed McFadden treating customers and/or staff!!!! read more
