We took a field trip today to visit the historic Jewish deli, Perly's. It was a beautiful sunny day. We lucked out and found curbside parking in front of the deli. It wasn't crowded and we're seated immediately. The staff was extremely curtious and attentive. The food was absolutely delicious. The matzahball soup was sinfully good. Had lunch here and really enjoyed it! I ordered the matzo ball soup and potato latkes. The soup came in a big bowl with two giant matzo balls! The broth was light and flavorful. You can really taste the herbs! The latkes were also a good portion and definitely shareable. They were nice and crispy. The servers were also very friendly. First come first served and this place gets busy! There are some chairs to sit on outside but they're in direct sunlight in the morning so most people opt to wait in the shade. There isn't a buzzer system so you have to have someone in your party staying in front of the restaurant to wait for your party's name to be called. The host called a party of three a few times and walked down the block to call their name as well (they never showed) so they do make an effort to contact you once it's your time. We came on a Thursday morning and waited for around 30 - 45 minutes. We were lucky to find free, two-hour street parking around the corner but it seems like parking can be tricky to find. Once seated, the waitress took our order and served us our meals relatively quickly. We didn't feel rushed, though because we were a table of two, we were sat at one of the two-seater tables which are on the smaller side. I felt a bit cramped, even as a petite person. My husband got the corned beef hash and I got the meat knish and a side of dill potato salad. We also shared a chocolate babka. This was our first time eating Jewish food (besides pastrami at Katz' in NYC lol) and we loved it! Everything was flavorful and cooked perfectly. The knish is technically supposed to be an appetizer but I saw a photo on Yelp and am glad I ordered it as my entree--it was huge! We don't have Jewish restaurants or markets where we're from so it was a surprising treat to stumble upon Perly's in Richmond! Despite the busyness, our waitress was attentive and friendly. Yuuummmmmmmm. We're from Virginia Beach and there really isn't anything like that there. My husband and his family are all Jewish so they lament the lack of a true Jewish deli. This place holds up! We met my mom here for lunch yesterday and were floored by the menu. So many delicious items it was actually really hard to choose. They also serve brunch all day and that menu looked stellar. I want to come back just for that! We sampled a ton of things: -Matzoh Ball Soup (of course) -Potato Latkes -Beef Rolls -Tuna Salad Sandwich (on bagel) -Pastrami Sandwich -Rueben -Black and White Cookies Everything was amazing and tasted legit. Hubs approved. Sandwiches came with delicious seasoned fries that were crispy and fresh and delish! Our waitress was really sweet and took such good care of us and everyone was friendly inside. If I have a friend visiting Richmond for the day, I ALWAYS recommend Perly's as a must-try. It's a breakfast/lunch spot serving up some delicious Jewish/Eastern European grub... but kinda like a modern/hip twist? It's not your typical grandparent's diner. I mean, they have a drinks called the Larry David and Bloody Miriam. Everything on the menu is delicious, so you can't really go wrong! My favorites are the Schlubby fries, pierogis, borscht and matzoh ball soup, all the sandwiches. For dessert, the black and white cookie is delicious. Dillon was attentive and kept my sweet tea full through my whole visit. The fries came recommended as they were perfectly seasoned and fresh out of the fryer. The star of the show was the pastrami hot and juicy with the perfect amount of sauerkraut and swiss that I was pleased I could special order. I look forward to coming back and trying the fresh bagels I noted being rotated from the visible kitchen area. The old photos and decor holds up to remind me of a simpler time, a time even before me. I watch food porn constantly, and when this place popped up on my radar, I felt like I needed to take the truck to Food Mecca with high expectations and they still surpassed my high expectations. I realize my opinion on this is going to be unpopular, but thought I would share because there may be others who can relate and benefit nonetheless so here we go! I got the Reuben from Perly's both times I visited. I just don't love the meat to sauerkraut to sauce to cheese proportions. It's VERY heavy on the meat, to the point that I almost miss the taste of all of the other wonderful aspects of this classic sandwich (that I love!) and the meat is sliced thick. Which I don't love either. I prefer my corned beef to be sliced normal or on the thinner side. Also, the bottom piece of rye bread is so soggy that it all just falls apart. The server mentions the garlic fries as being "a treat" but I wasn't really impressed with them. I mean, they were good. But they weren't anything to write home about. Perhaps the way they talk them up guaranteed the let down a little bit. I was also disappointed in their non-alcoholic selection - being just soda or house made soda. Especially during Dry January and in a time where consuming alcohol is becoming less and less popular across the board. Seems like the beverage selection could use an update. Overall, I think Perly's is fine. But it's not my favorite. I would go again if invited by a friend, but otherwise I'm not really interested. read more

I can't believe it took 5 years for me to try Perly's - that's 5 years too late! Came on a Sunday at 10:30 and waited about 30-40 min for a 4 top. The wait wasn't bad and food service was quick. I created my own sandwich - everything about it was amazing but my favorite was the combo of the flavorful pastrami meat and Russian dressing. A small is 7oz while a large is 10oz. The small was plenty for me (I probably should have stopped at 1/2 of the sandwich but it was just too good). I will definitely be back and can't wait to try more menu items! read more

Perly's is truly a Richmond staple and lives up to having good food and great service! There is usually a long line or wait, so please be patient and prepared when going. I wouldn't go here on a time constraint. For breakfast I ordered the corned beef and eggs. With a side of beef bologna. The corned beef hash was delicious. It wasn't your typical canned corned beef. It's made in-house, fresh and well seasoned. The eggs were cooked perfectly. They were soft and fluffy. The bologna was different, but I enjoyed the uniqueness of it. This dish does include a Hollandaise sauce I requested it without the sauce out of personal preference. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We opted for the counter seating however saw a booth and our hostess let us switch, no issues. This is a very busy crowded restaurant. We had to wait quite a long while for our server. We ordered the matzo ball soup, crispy Brussels sprouts and the bagel sandwich. The matzo ball soup was delicious, whole carrots, chicken and a huge matzo ball filled the hearty soup. I also ordered Brussels sprouts which I thought was a side dish, boy was I wrong! It was a huge portion! And was oh so delicious! I feel like leaving this review is so unnecessary because if you've been, you know Perly's is nothing but worth the hype (and on weekends, the possible wait). We showed up at the perfect time to be seated right away and all it took was one look at the menu and I was immediately DROOLING - I got the latkes, tuna shmelt with fries, and an a la carte side of potato salad, but left wishing I had additional stomach space for several more items on the menu. I couldn't stop talking about the taste and texture of the potato salad in particular; absolutely worth it to get some to go on your way out! The corned beef and hash is one of my favorites! I dream of the mazto ball soup! I am perfectly content to order a couple delicious potato pancakes and a bowl of matzo and take the left overs home, because there will be plenty of leftovers. Perly's is certainly a Richmond institution and is a must-visit for visitors and locals alike. I don't think I've ever waited less than an hour for a table and that includes rainy days. They do not accept reservations. You can order food to-go on their website if you don't feel like waiting for dine-in, though. I've had several different items over the years, including deli dogs (one of the only times I've had to box up a hot dog in my life for lack of stomach space), smoked whitefish salad platter (it arrives deconstructed), and the Goy Vey turkey and bacon sandwich. All of which were very tasty. I also really enjoyed their garlic dill fries. This isn't a place to relax and hang out for several hours considering how busy they always are, and it's also really not a place to ask several questions about their menu items. My mom was doing her typical line of questioning on a recent visit, and our server replied by saying they consistently have 2-hour wait times, so the food is all good. He said it in a kind-enough approach for it not to be rude, but to just get the point across to hurry along and order so you can enjoy your food and make space for the next party. This place was fantastic! Our friends in the area told us that this was a must go destination for breakfast, and I will say that I agree with them 100%! While, the menu is certainly ample, let's not kid around - if this is your first time visiting Perly's, you are probably here for the bagel and lox breakfast. It's awesome. Don't second-guess yourself! Get it! I do wish that they would have espresso/cappuccino here, but their drip coffee is actually excellent, and is one of the few that I've had at a restaurant that I have really enjoyed. Parking is limited, however there are a few local buses and spots to lock your bike nearby. Grace street is a really beautiful location. Plus they're next to Stella's Grocery if you want to visit another hyper local biz too. ***EXPERIENCE*** I've been here multiple times with family. On my recent trip, I took my manager who was visiting from Miami. On every trip, I always make sure to order the potato and duck pierogi. They're beyond delicious (and super filling). Here's what I (or people I love) have tried: Potato & Duck Pierogi: MUST GET, these heavenly dumplings are both filling and delicious. The sauce and stuffing in these are to die for. Latkes: Classic and yummy. It's a Jewish restaurant, why wouldn't you try getting these. Babka French toast: OMG, I just tried this and am now getting it every chance I get. Whenever I'm in NYC I try to get babka from my fave Jewish grocery store, I can now find a very tasty and creative version of it in RVA! It's straight up magic in your mouth. Corn Hash: My manager grew up eating this with her dad. I had never tried it before and she was so excited how authentic it was. She told me they use quality ingredients (some places just take it from can, not Perly's!) They use the freshest ingredients here. Reuben: I've watched my family devour this sandwich. I know there are a million reviews already for Perly's, but I loved my experience here so much that I had to add another one. We were in town for the Richmond marathon, and came on Wednesday around 9AM. There were plenty of seats open, but I'm guessing cause it was a weekday morning. When I passed by after the marathon on Saturday, the place was packed with lines out the door. Like everyone else, we ordered latkes and the matzo ball soup. FANTASTIC! I would also highly recommended getting the Schnorrer since it was a great deal, but probably not the whitefish since it was smoked and not fresh (unless that's what you prefer). I had long been longing for a deli that provided a sandwich experience similar to that of my days in NYC. About a year ago a friend had recommended Perly's, but being one who doesn't hit that part of Richmond frequently, as well as their early closing, I hadn't made it, until yesterday, and I'm so happy I did. As I was nearing Perly's my eye noticed a bunch of people hanging out on the street, which immediately brought the mixed reaction of happiness that this may be the place and fret of a long queue on a chilly late morning. Upon entering was a somewhat long, but narrow diner-vibed establishment. When I told the young lady that I was dining alone, she asked if I wanted to sit at the counter, to which I immediately responded yes. It was the very last open seat anywhere! I ordered my go-to at any Jewish deli, a Reuben, with a side of potato salad. Also asked if they had Dr. Brown's, to which she said no (the only bummer of the experience). The two folks sitting next to me also ordered at about the same time, so I asked if they had been here before and they said "yes." The young lady said she went to VCU and any time she returned to the city, it was one of her must visit places when she came back to the city. Despite being crowded, it didn't take long before the plate arrived. The first thing I always do is peek at the corned beef to see if has been prepared correctly (cut the meat against the grain) and it was. The sandwich was not filled to the max with corned beef like in NYC, but given the price, it was a decent portion. The taste of the sandwich, though, was excellent! The taste of the potato salad was ok, but I didn't take away from the rating, cause the primary mission of a great sandwich was met. Extremely happy to have finally visited Perly's! My girlfriend and I came here with her sister while we were visiting in Richmond. It was a really good choice. This is a Jewish style deli restaurant. We started with the pierogis. This was our first pierogi ever and it was very good! I ordered the Oy Vey for my entree. It was absolutely delicious. It wasn't as good as some places in NYC but that's a tall task. My girlfriend ordered the Reuben and she really liked it too. The service was solid. It's super busy on the weekends so expect it to be a little slower. We had to wait about 30 mins for a table. Our server was good considering how busy it was. He got us all of what we needed. The ambiance is very diner oriented. Whenever we go we always try to go when they first open. They are popular and get fill pretty quickly! Be sure to know where to park/parallel park cause it can be tricky. Other than that, there's plenty of other places to explore while waiting if you are put on the list. Their matzo ball soup is a must! It's so hearty and the broth is just delicious. There is not a good Jewish deli where we live so stopped by when passing through. This would be a 4.5 star for the food and the restaurant is old and beautiful inside but service was slow. I'm going to account that they are having a staffing problem. Our server was sweet, it just would have been nice if she checked on us more. Now the food was great!
