I brought my Mazda Miata here to request a cleaning of my Intake Manifold and EGR valve. Ray quoted me $504 for these two parts to be cleaned. I felt that it was pretty expensive but proceeded anyway because my check engine light was reading p0401 (EGR flow insufficient) They held my car for only about 3 hours. I was pleased with the quick turnover time but soon after I learned that part of the work I was charged for was NEVER even done. On arrival, the same check engine light illuminated within 1 minute of starting the car in their parking lot. Ray cleared the code with his computer and said to call him and schedule a new diagnostic check if the light comes back on. Sure enough the next day, the same check engine light came on again... I learned how to unbolt the EGR valve myself that day following some youtube videos, and it was then revealed to me that Ray NEVER EVEN UNBOLTED THE EGR valve, Nor did he clean it. (He did clean the intake manifold and provided pictures of that, but there was no evidence on his end of ever even unbolting or cleaning the EGR - which i was charged for) The pictures i've attached showing the completely CARBON CAKED egr valve will speak for themselves. Of course I did not trust Ray and Performance Haus to be honest with a second followup so I did not care to call back. AVOID THIS DISHONEST SHOP AND TAKE YOUR CAR SOMEWHERE ELSE - THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF. read more

When I went to pick up the car he told me it was a gas cap I was charged $181 granted he charged my battery for nine dollars and replace the gas cap for $25. I brought my car in for my back light to be replaced and they said they " changed the blub" well fast forward to two weeks later my whole taillight was out and they said it was a "socket issue" I took it to two other repair shops and they said NO ALL YOU NEEDED WAS A NEW LIGHT BLUB. My GMC Sierra truck had a leaking front shock absorber after 145,000 miles so I took my truck to Ray to replace both front shocks. These were expensive special order parts because they are electronically controlled. The installation went smoothly and it made the truck ride like new again. After a few weeks I noticed there was another leak from the new right hand shock. I took it back to Ray, he removed the leaking shock which had a failed seal despite being a brand new factory part. He dealt with getting a replacement under warranty and installed it all on the same day, which was the Friday after Thanksgiving. When I picked up the truck the charge for labor was zero, despite the problem being with the part not how it was installed. I call that outstanding customer service and so I will continue to use Performance Haus for my repair needs and I'm happy to recommend them to anyone in South Orange County needing work done on their vehicles. read more

I had a problem with my entertainment center in a 2003 Cadillac SRX. Ray explained all that needed to be done and that it would take a while since the unit had to be sent out. I took the car in for Ray to remove the unit and send it out to have rebuilt since that unit was no longer available from the factory. Ray quoted me a price. Ray called me when the unit was ready to be installed. I took the car back and left it. Unknown to Ray, the company rebuilding the unit did not inform Ray the unit would have to be finally reset to match the VIN as a means to prevent auto theft. That required Ray to take the car to the Cadillac dealer to have that done at an extra expense. Ray was probably now out of pocket on this transaction. However, as a man of his word, he did not change his quotation to me. Ray showed himself to be an honest man. For that reason, I will continue to have him service my car. read more

I moved to Dana Point a couple months ago leaving my trusted mechanic. Came across what I thought was a small oil leak and decided to bring it to Performance Haus as they were across the street. What I thought was small turned out to be a bigger issue than a stripped oil plug. Water pump and belts needed to be replaced costing over $1,000 in repairs which I was not expecting especially days before vacation. Heading out of the door to leave for Labor Day weekend I get a call from Ray saying that he was not going to change the water pump nor the belts. Confused for a second he explained why. The clip to my oil dipstick broke hence the major oil leak. There was no oil in the water pump not on the timing belts enough to replace. Ray could have changed everything out and made the extra money of unnecessary repairs but was honest and thorough with his work. No one likes to go to the doctor or to the car doctor. But, it's important for longevity. Never miss a check up. I came in here for a smog check after seeing that they services Honda as well as VW. I was in and out in 15 minutes, and Gary was super friendly and totally professional. Very competetive pricing for the work, as well. The shell station across the street wanted 3-4 hours and almost twice as much as what Performance Haus did. There was no dispute on the smog check. The issue is that there was no discussion of the diagnosis fee. No estimate of service was provided In writing for the diagnosis, only the smog check,-/ I have all the paperwork that was provided. The only time that the cost was written was on the receipt. Even more disappointing than the price is the dishonesty shown in the response. Poor business practices and dishonesty is what you will get at this shop. Buyer beware. read more

I stopped by for a smog check, and it took only 15-20 minutes. Everything was fine. Ray, the owner, was super nice and helpful. While there, I couldn't help listening to his customer call backs, including a walk-up customer question and instructions to his assistant. It struck me that Ray is clearly very experienced in all types of car repair, he is very helpful in explaining details to customers and he gives honest advice on car repairs. His assistant was wickedly good at researching and locating miscellaneous car parts and costs on the internet to help their customers. gary colwell the longtime owner of performance haus volkswagon has sold the shop.. the name the same, but under new ownership. it's not the same. my volkswagon that gary has taken care for year, needed to be check out for a fuel supply leak. so i called to talk to him to see if he had the time to check it out as i have done in the past at no cost. i was told gary has sold the shop. to have my v w check out it would cos $50.00 -$ 200 and when ask if the money would go towards the fix.i was told maybe or maybe not.( what!! who dose business that way,) we miss gary and the way he ran his shop in our city. 4 read more

Gary has been a fantastic mechanic to get to know. I have '86 Westy and everyone once in a while she needs work. My last mechanic jacked up the coolant system and I almost melted down the motor. I had it towed to Gary, he got it running again and we talked about options from repair to replacing the engine. In the end, we did the repair work, he was honest repaired it on time and gave me options to choose from in terms of the repair. I'm using Gary for all my work going forward (already have!).
